holy spirit you are welcome here he is here he's here among us he's filling this place he's flooding this place [Music] since we have that opportunity to be in his presence with each other let's take advantage of that you might not have had a chance to do that this week so in this moment steal your heart prepare your heart to spend time with your creator who loves you and who's with you you can come down front we invite you to this altar or you can make an altar in your seat where you are but let's take a few moments to pray let us pray [Music] [Music] father god creator of the universe we're so honored to be able to come into your presence and to know that you care for us some of us carry heavy burdens this week some of some of us have great joys to celebrate and we know you're with us through both of those and through anything else we can face you're with us and we thank you for that and we ask your blessing on whatever comes toward us this week thank you god for being with us and for caring for us in the name of jesus [Music] but stand and sing holy holy holy [Music] [Music] in the morning [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] black [Music] oh [Music] around see [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] know the darkness [Music] glory be [Music] is [Music] ready [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] uh [Music] hey [Music] god you are holy [Music] and how can i even begin to describe the one who is like no other fully god yet somehow fully man the formless one conformed to the constructs of a body and he chose mere flesh to cover his own sovereign hand precisely fashioned and masterfully crafted it was good for the invisible to have skin in the game his full and complete surrender within his own divinity and his blood oh his blood being the ultimate price for grace [Music] i praise god that humility is still the gentle touch that saves today what better gift could he offer than himself he was god he is god and he'll forever be the one who set the universe into existence he reaches out to engage the heart of humanity he heals the lost and the sick and the broken he redeems the most vulnerable parts of prayers unspoken and like the shadows first response to the light the night in me it makes way for all that's right so i stand in awe and i bow down and wonder for every heart that puts faith in him the god of heaven puts on flesh over and over again and again how can it be that the holiness i see he now lives inside of me [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] heaven's mercy sees is [Music] [Music] holy [Applause] [Music] all is [Music] [Music] is thunderstruck [Music] is me [Music] filled [Music] [Music] your name jesus [Music] [Music] [Music] is is [Music] holy holy holy is the lord god almighty who was and who is and who is to come god we praise you for so many things we thank you for so many things we have relationship with you through your son jesus through the holy spirit but in the middle of all that we recognize you are holy you are high and lifted up and there was nothing we could have ever done to have deserved your presence but we thank you for jesus and we thank you for your spirit and we worship you today and it's in jesus name we pray amen amen my name is anthony dennert and i'm in the eighth grade my favorite part about missions is me and my friends and everyone in our youth group could get together and it was just a great way to help the community and show the power of god we were at the assistant living home and there was this lady who hadn't been smiling all year because of everything that had been happening to her and when we started singing our songs about god and how great he was she started to smile it just filled me with joy to see someone go from despair and sadness to just loving every word that came out of our mouths because it was all about god and how great he was we also went to the thrift store the people there were just so happy to have that help because it was so much harder without all the extra people since the trip god has shown me that even the smallest difference that you make it can brighten up their day it can help them so much more than you could even imagine one thing i want people to know about all these trips all the things that we do is it may be hard work and it may not be easy and it may be tiring but it's definitely worth it you doing those small things or big things whatever it is it shows them how jesus works in our lives you remember when you were in school you would have lecture and then you would have lab the professor would talk to you about how something worked and then you would go to lab and you would see how it worked mission trips are labs you come every sunday and you hear how god works then you go somewhere and do something and you see how god works sometimes the mission trips or the middle school in our own zip code sometimes it's around the world same principle same truths same good god in every situation there's always lecture that's important but there's always lab where you get to see how the kingdom works in everyday real life we have a lot of those mission trips and you can find out more on the website about find where you can find one that you would enjoy and align with the gifts that you have as as well as some of the burdens that you have so uh make sure that you find a place not only where you hear the word talked but you see the word practiced some of these mission trips are very very practical we have been in waverly since uh the flood happened uh we're still in waverly we will be in waverly for a really long time uh southern baptists have been uh on the whole trail of ida from the time it hit uh shore in louisiana and tracked it all the way through the northeast and because of your generosity we are able to respond to those needs and so many more around the world so as ushers come forward let's continue our worship as we give to our lord now lord jesus every life is now before you so we pray that you would take everything we are and everything we have and use them to your glory and to the greater good of your kingdom so that there's not a man not a woman not a child doesn't know of your good news and the gospel of our lord jesus christ in whose name we pray amen who is god with one word he spoke light into darkness full of magnitude and mystery his gentle hands give the very life we breathe his heart is good and his love is sure but can i really open up and trust is he close enough for me to touch [Music] will he hold my secrets near and hear the depth of my cry is grace all it takes to redeem what's inside from the heights of heaven he saw me still and walked earth that i might know he's real oh what peace he brings and the endless glory i will see [Music] honestly i have never seen a time when our people when you are so frazzled so fried so fragile all of us are that camel who seems to be waiting for that last straw to hit our backs we thought we would be through covet by now we're not we thought we would be passed and back to normal and kids would be in school they sort of are you thought you'd be back to work sort of our bosses let us work from home only to find that it was a sneaky trick did you realize that most of us worked more hours from home than we did if we went into the office and we're afraid we live in a time when every major institution of our life has failed us we don't know who to listen to we don't know who to trust and everybody's mad you can't say a good morning to somebody without them demanding to know what you meant by that that's why we planned tonight's night of worship most of the time when we plan a night of worship it is big it is overpowering it is overwhelming tonight's going to be very different it's going to be very quiet going to give you plenty of time to pray and to worship and to find your center again the cure for burnout isn't rest it's worship so we invite you to come tonight come as fried and frazzled frustrated and fragile as you are and find your healing and the only place you can the presence of a living god that's here in the sanctuary tonight at 6 30 and i would encourage all of you to join us uh tonight you know the thing about being as old as i am is i got to read some of the classics when they were first coming out one of them is a wonderful book that you've never heard of called your god is too small by j.b phillips uh this book came out and right now is in its 10th 11th printing uh came out in the early 1960s and began to challenge people because their image of god was too small and they were getting to situations that were difficult or challenging and their little picture of the flannelgraph jesus wasn't big enough to get them through whatever they were facing and so j.b phillips writes a book called your god is too small most of us like a jesus we can hang out with jesus who's our friend we don't like the jesus who confronts us most of us like a jesus who will save us most of us are uncomfortable with the jesus who demands everything of us as a result we go into a world and we're overwhelmed because our god is too small it was the year king uzziah died isaiah tells us it was a time of palace intrigue uncertainty anytime a king died we never knew how the transition would go would there be a rebellion would there be palace fights we didn't know and so isaiah is very uncertain because good king uzziah has died and the result he is in the sanctuary when god appears and overwhelms isaiah the bad news king uzziah is dead the good news god is still on his throne you see the cure to fear isn't faith it's more fear are you afraid that king uzziah has died yes check yourself isaiah you better be afraid of the god who's still on the throne the cure to fear is in face uh-uh more fear isaiah reminds us in the sixth chapter of his book isaiah stand with me now in honor of god's word in the year the king uzziah died i saw the lord seated high and lofty all on the throne and the hem of his robe filled the entire temple seraphim were standing above him they each had six wings with two that cover their faces with two they covered their feet with two they flew and one call to another holy holy holy is the lord god of the armies his glory fills the whole earth the foundations of the doorway shook at the sound of their voices and the temple was filled with smoke then i said woe is me for i am ruined i'm a man of unclean lips i live among a people of unclean lips because my eyes have seen the king the lord of the armies and one of the seraphim flew to me and his hand was a glowing coal that he'd taken off the altar with tongs and he touched my mouth and with it he said your iniquity has now been removed your sin a tone for woe is me i'm a man of unclean lips and i live among a people of unclean lips this is god's word for god's people hear it believe it and live let's pray together in a world where all the foundations seem to be crumbling when everything we saw we could count on we now know we can't we like isaiah are afraid about our future remind us as you reminded him and may the results in our lives be the same as the results in his and we pray this in your name amen uzziah was a good king do you know how hard it is to find good kings read the stories in first and second kings first and second chronicles a lot of them are just summed up and this king did what is evil in the sight of the lord and that's all we hear about them but king uzziah king uzziah fills up pages paragraphs about all the things that he was able to accomplish he was able to fortify the city of jerusalem he was able to extend the borders of judah he was able to engage with treaties that increased trade he increased agriculture he had an army of 300 000 standing soldiers there was an episode where as my mother would say he got a little big for his britches and he went into the temple innocently wanted to offer sacrifice he wanted to do it as a a a moment of praise things were going so well he couldn't contain himself he wanted to offer incense to the lord he wanted to lead his own worship service the priest found him and said don't do that don't cross the line and he did anyway and he was struck with leprosy he could never go back into the temple because of his skin disease wasn't seen in public much although he continued to rule you see even kings are accountable even kings answer but all in all king uzziah had been a very good king and now he's dead he has a teenage son that's been ruling with him but you know how kids are these days you don't know that he's going to be a good king you don't know who he's going to listen to you don't know who he's going to pick is his advisors you just don't know have other soldiers other people been laying in wait looking for this moment that they can usurp the throne oh yeah read first and second kings first and second chronicles it happened all the time and so and so would lure so and so into another place and there they would be ambushed and killed and they would take the throne happened all the time and the innocence would be caught in the crossfire nothing's changed we call them democrats and republicans they call them kings and princes governors and rulers palace intrigue his palace intrigue and isaiah was scared so he goes to church you ever notice what happens when people go to church isaiah went to church john on the isle of patmos went to church paul goes to the synagogues all of these things all of these great stories have one thing in common they all begin when somebody goes to church and there isaiah is ambushed by wonder he sees god on his throne he sees all that he can handle he sees all that his little brain can take in by no means did he see everything about god it would fry his circuits have you ever been traveling internationally huh and you take your little 110 hair dryer and plug it into the 220 socket there goes your hairdryer same principle moses begs god let me see your face god says i can't moses says why not god said he would kill you he said i tell you what i will do i'll put my hand over you and i'll walk by and i'll let you see me walking away but that's all you stand you always get all of god that you can take you see some of us don't have a god problem as much as we have a capacity problem and moses is overwhelmed it's the wave at the beach that catches him off guard and throws him to the bottom and won't let him up he tumbles and tumbles can't tell up from down and now he can't breathe the fullness of god takes up every inch of the taping of the temple there's no space left there's no air left in the room and did you notice the seraphim sing their song of praise the building trembles it's not god who speaks we've always read that and thought it was god who spoke who spoke nah necessarily if god speaks nothing's left it's suffering that caused this kind of earthquake that causes the ground to tremble under isaiah's feet and isaiah's first response is uh-oh uh-oh that i am ruined uh that's hebrew slang it's i'm sunk uh-oh this stuff it's that moment where you get what you asked for you ever had those moments you know well i wish you'd turn around and say something to me uh-oh yeah it's that moment isaiah is scared i wish god would just show me something i wish god would just show up i wish uh-oh he's here and isaiah says i am lost i'm sunk nobody can save me now from what's about to happen it's that awful moment when you realize the the the bomb has run out of time that the timer has hit zero and it's about to blow up and you're not going to make it out it's that awful moment when you realize you're going to die and there's nothing you can do about it oh i am a man of unclean lips everything i say is filthy everything i say is tainted not only that i'm from a long line of people of unclean lips i don't even have anybody i can refer to to help me in this moment i'm sunk one of the seraphim fly to him and touch his mouth with a coal from the altar the altar is burning picks up the coal and puts it on isaiah's mouth now we run over this we say oh he's purified ah he's now clean have you ever been burned have you ever touched something that you didn't know was hot have you ever been in a burn unit of a hospital the pain is excruciating we've all done it grab hold of a pot that we didn't know was hot put our hand on it of an eye that we didn't stove either we didn't know it was hot right it takes you about half a millisecond to realize this is hot and my hand needs to move and it hurts for days and you'll walk around like some martyr suffering for the faith oh oh what happened put my hand on a hot eye were you idiot yeah that's right no one feels sorry for you when you do that but it hurts for days now that's what happened with isaiah he's there and and the angel steers his lips the most sensitive part of your face is now on fire skin is blistering nerves are dying blood vessels are being cauterized now your sins are forgiven now your lips are clean the pain won't let him go the story continues you're familiar with it who will go for us isaiah says send me doesn't know where does he know how does it know what he just know if god's calling he's going god tells him i'm going to send you to a people who will not listen you preach anyway i'm going to send you to a people who will never understand you preach anyway and in those moments when you feel like giving up you remember this moment when your face caught on fire let's be honest just between you and me we don't want a god like this do we we don't want a god this big that's holy we don't want a god that can demand everything even your life we don't want a god like that you know isaiah's story is not the only story that happened like this in in the bible uh it goes back to the story of moses exodus 3. moses is keeping his father-in-law sheep there's a bush on fire that won't burn up as he approaches it god tells him take off your shoes because you're on holy ground and there moses encounters the living god the great i am and god tells him go to pharaoh and tell him to let my people go pharaoh was the biggest king of the biggest nation of the biggest army moses you better know who you're afraid of it's not pharaoh daniel chapter four chapter three means shank saturday bendigo are before nebuchadnezzar and he's telling why didn't you foul down to the goldens i know i made and i said well we're not he said the punishment is i'm going to throw you into the fiery furnace their answer our god can save us and whether he does or doesn't that's up to him but you need to know we will not bow down why i'm more afraid of the god of israel than i am you the sanhedrin wanted to know by what authority john and peter were preaching and they answered whether we should listen to god or you you think about that but us we can only talk about what we've seen and heard we're more afraid of jesus who's risen from the dead than we are of you i tell you this story all the time it happened to me when i was 15 about to be 16. i was about to get my driver's license my dad takes me out to eat just me and my dad we're at his favorite restaurant shownings on north parkway we order after it's over he said son you're growing up i'm proud of you you're about to get your license you're about to be able to go places i won't be there you'll have to make decisions i hope i've done a good job training you and then he said you know son you're going to be in places where your friends and you are going to talk about things and they're going to want you to do something that you know i don't want you to do in fact your friends are going to put a lot of pressure on you mike and you're going to have this thought in your head and be just there for a minute and you're going to say who am i more afraid of my friends and what they will say or my father and what he will say and he pushed the plates to the side and he folded his hands and he leaned across the table his face was inches from mine and he said boy you know dads can say that word it takes all the insides out of you you know just boy you'd better be more afraid of me instant clarity i was never confused from that moment on i know you're afraid i know you're fragile but the answer to fear is more fear i'm more afraid of god that i am anybody anything else we don't want a god like this do we you don't want a god that can stand in front of you and say sell everything you have give it to the poor come back and i'll tell you what to do next you don't want a god that demands your full attention so that you will show up for work and not know what happened on social media but still be worried thinking about consumed by what you read in the gospel of john you don't want a god like that do you who will walk in that secret place carrying that same piece of coal and sear burn out that sin that you so relish and enjoy our world doesn't know what to do with a god like this they pile stones on him and every week it seems we have another something that tells us god is dead religion's dead faith is dead and the world gets up only to realize it's easter all over again you better know who to be afraid of isaiah you better know who's on the throne be afraid be very very afraid our god is on the loose let's pray together with your heads bound your eyes closes we come to this serious moment of decision and some of you are thinking about matters of ultimate and eternal importance some of you are thinking about your relationship with jesus christ and you've been thinking about this and thinking about this and thinking about this maybe one day maybe today is that day don't waste another minute don't make waste another second our counselors our ministers and the welcome center you go out of here turn left you'll see the big big sign welcome center they're waiting on you now they want to continue this conversation they want to help you answer your questions they want you to know the risen christ some of you are facing overwhelming moments things you don't know how to figure out go find one of our counselors let them pray with you and know in this moment how big our god is for some of you it's as simple as becoming member of brentwood baptist church you come let's get you engaged in a way that changes the world for the sake of the kingdom whatever it is our god is waiting for you where you are the church will wait for you as you come lord jesus every life is now open every heart so we pray now the choices we make are exactly what you want [Music] holy holy holy is the lord god almighty who was and is and is to come with all to the king of kings you are my everything and i will adore you let's stand as we close it's been good to be with you today in the house of the lord i got about three things i want to say to you first of all number one i want you to take our pastor's advice and if you have a decision to make or if you have something you want to pray through we have people right through those doors and to the left and our new welcome center that want to talk through those things with you and are here to do just that i pray that you will today is a day we are alive and able to move forward in jesus so i i pray that you'll do that second thing is we do have a new welcome center and we want you to welcome you to the welcome center so when you leave i do want you to go over even if you want to just stop by and say hello to our connect team check out our welcome center lay your eyes on it and see what resources are available there we want you to do that today also we have what is called group connect today so as you leave i know there are about 55 parking lots around this place but i do want you to go out this way because down this hall that through the atrium and toward the children's area we have what's called group connect and you can come find out places where you can connect there are real general ways to connect there are some specific ways to connect but i guarantee you there are places that you probably want to be involved that you don't know anything about and today would be a great day to find out about those things see what god is doing all around you and find a place to connect i hope that you'll do that now let's sing praise [Music] praise father you have a great day we'll see you tonight at 6 30.
