stream today we're so glad that we get this opportunity to worship together with you we want to make sure that you know that you can check out our website for tons of virtual options um in this time where you can't be with us in person so welcome to those of you who are in the room um we cannot wait to worship together today so we have coming up in two weeks the neighborhood cooperative ministry food drive and neighborhood cooperative ministry is a wonderful partnership that we have here there's about 20 um churches who all go together and we pool our resources to be able to support them and so we don't have like a food pantry here at campus or a clothes pantry what we have our clothes closet i guess you don't have clothes pantries um so we do not have that we support neighborhood cooperative ministry well they have been serving like a hundred more families than usual so they need food so you should have received in your newsletter this week a list of items to get and you have the next two weeks to bring them to campus church and so you can bring them if you're coming in person and if not on sunday i think it's the 26th um we will have it is the 26th from 1 to 3 we'll have a drive through so we make it super easy you just pull up drive through and we'll get your groceries out of your car for you you don't even have to get out of your car so we would love your help with that so we have many different ways the list is online so you can get it there and we also have paper list if you're in person and then we also have if you want a bag if you're like me and you're so forgetful you have to put the bag like in your car in your passenger seat so you see it and you get the items so we would be so appreciative if you would get those and bring them back over the next two weeks and julie they have specific needs right andy if you'll throw up the list here so people can see it they um they don't just need whatever's in your pantry they have some very specific needs so yeah if you would get those and you don't have to get everything some people will like find a great deal on cereal and they'll bring in 20 boxes of cereal something like that so whatever you can do on this list would be a wonderful blessing to the families in our community yes all right hey family ministry we want to make sure that we're all on the same page about what family ministry has coming up campus kids for the time being is going to have virtual options for those of you who are worshiping from home with your kids and in-person options for those of you who are here and bringing your kids with you so sundays in september at 9 00 a.m if you have a preschooler or elementary schooler they can hop on zoom so that they still get to have interactions and connections with their small groups um and our family ministry team can help be preparing your family to have spiritual conversations with your kids even when you can't be here but also in person is here during the worship service at 10 a.m that's all through september will offer both of those options for whichever your family needs students you have sunday nights in person through september uh seven o'clock here at the building and on if you go to the yeah september 25th we've got a cookout at the beasley's house at 5 30 so make sure that you mark your calendar for that i also wanted to let you know that this harvest sunday i'll tell you what harvest sunday is harvest sunday is a great opportunity to leverage our uncommon generosity for our ministry partners we have about seven ministry partners that we support and over the next seven weeks how convenient seven weeks seven partners you're gonna hear about each of those ministries you'll also get something in the mail about this so we would love for you to be praying about how much you could give to that the past two years that we've done this we've raised over a hundred and fifty thousand dollars so please be praying about that and let's bring together our resources so that we can be able to fully support these ministries and you'll hear about each of them coming soon hey the best way for you to find out more information about everything we've talked about is to read our newsletters and so you can sign up for those on our our web page um if you are new with us or maybe you just don't really know how to sign up for our newsletter and you want more information we'd love to connect with you you can fill out a connection card they are at the welcome desk in the lobby again we would love to connect with you and help you get more and we do praise thee forever [Music] [Music] we do all adore [Music] and we do praise thee forever [Music] amen you may be seated hello campus church uh as an introvert there's nothing i'd rather do on sunday morning than be with you on the giant screen to talk about communing the table but here i am and here we are i'm dan chase and i'm lisa chase we're here to talk to you about what the table means what communion means to us and to do that we are here today around our table it's not always the the cleanest table or the neatest table we have at our home and sometimes you can even find an animal or two or maybe a couple cats on the table joining us for dinner but it is a place that that we we gather around as a famine it's a place that that you can always be accepted at to me the table is a place to share your day to share your stories and no matter if you've had a great day or a bad day you're all everyone always listens and you're always welcome to share with what's going on in your life at the time it always reminds me too that there's always time for more stories and every day every day is a fresh start at the table in fact there's a a little icon that my daughter elizabeth put on my phone that reminds me of this it says every morning is a fresh start and i read that literally every day to think about no matter what's happened before i always have another chance to start again and i don't have to worry about what's happening it does remind me of a scripture as well that i'd like to share with you this morning it's from matthew 6 verse 34. it says so don't worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will bring its own worries today's trouble is enough for today so that to me that kind of helps me refocus and re-center on what's important um to focus on those around me and those at the table as well um so no matter what i've gone through or what i may think i will go through there's always a chance um to be real and to be together with those that i love lisa would also like to share um what the table means to her so um when i was thinking about what the table means to me i kind of was going back to um our unique training that we did um it seems like forever ago 2019 which also seems like it was just yesterday um and the two words that i came up with for um sort of my mission were restoring eden and that's probably not a surprise to a lot of people um but it has a deeper meaning for me and um than just the face value of restoring eden you know the taking care of the earth it's talking about um for me it's not just restoring um the earth to the way that god made it um but also people when adam and eve were in the garden they were fully naked now i'm not saying that we're all coming to the table naked please please don't please no no nakedness at the table not yet but coming as god made us so everyone is welcome at the table um just the way you are whatever situation you're in however you are how god made you um you're welcome to come to the table and so when i think about my two words and the table i just think about how you don't have to put on your fig leaves or hide um from god there you can just be and um just come and and partake in the bread and the wine and not worry about um what you what happened last night or how you're feeling or anything else it's just come and be near to god great so with that let's um bow our heads and say a prayer and come to the table as you are to enjoy this communion dear heavenly father we thank you for this time that we can come to the table no matter what state we're in no matter what happened yesterday we can come without worrying about tomorrow or worrying about what happened yesterday we thank you that you sent your son so that all of us are welcome at the table no matter what and that we can come and be in that moment and not worry about the future we pray all this in your heavenly name amen [Music] [Music] your body crucify [Music] poured out in sacrifice to trade the sinners in for your new covenant hallelujah [Music] hallelujah [Music] your way born as my own as christ is formed in me hallelujah [Music] your promise [Music] if ever i should lose my way if ever i deny your grace remind me of the price [Music] and you've been so so good to me you've been so so good to me [Music] thank you god [Music] as if as heights reach from the depths as far as east is from the west so far your grace has carried me until i see you face to face until at last i've won my race remind me [Music] you i live in remembrance [Music] good morning we'd like to welcome the dobson family to campus church adam and amanda and their teen daughter evelyn might not get evil understand uh i commend this family to you they you they're familiar faces to you they've been with us for quite a while uh we have a term we call regular visitors and they actually hit the ground running they involved themselves in ministry from the time that they got here pretty much the second week so amanda adam and evelyn we welcome you we welcome you with open arms our prayer is at this in this season and in this church you will find a loving community a safe place to be vulnerable a family in which to grow and find purpose we pray you will feel a continual call to self-sacrifice excuse me self-sacrificing love may you come to more to know more deeply the good life that is found in jesus may the spirit of our lord fill you with the knowledge of how wide how long how high and how deep is his love and may he use you to grow his kingdom in this place now members we also charge you to welcome this family in the name of the lord jesus christ as christ has loved you so you should love them commit yourselves today to know them and to serve them as your brothers sisters and fellow servants of our lord welcome to the dobsons [Applause] [Music] all right good morning hey i'm derek wilson uh i me and my wife megan we have been attending here for six years i think at this point we have uh three little kids shepard lucy and ollie you've probably seen them causing chaos in the lobby after church or trying to climb the death trap of that stairwell on the outside uh i think i've caught shep halfway up it multiple times but i'm really excited to be here today and i'm excited to be preaching and sharing dusty dusty tends to give me these texts that are really hard last time he gave me i think he gave me philemon to preach and so this time around he said hey you know what i'm going to do better and he gave me i was like all right what's the topic and he goes it's jesus which honestly is a lot harder than it seems uh i was like what do you what do you do with jesus so he actually gave me i think my favorite section of scripture and so i want to start off today just reading this section of scripture it's from john 1. it's the beginning of john sometimes it's referred to as the prologue of john and so i want to start off reading it i think this might be one of i think the most beautiful passages in scripture so and i think really to understand what's happening at the end of john 1 you have to understand the whole context so we're going to start off just reading a bigger chunk of it this is what it says in the beginning was the word and the word was with god and the word was god he was with god in the beginning through him all things were made without him nothing was nothing was made that has been made in him was life and that life was the light of humanity the light shines in the darkness but the darkness has not overcome it there was it came a man who was sent from god his name was john he came to testify concerning that light so that through him people might believe he himself was not the light he came only as a witness to the light the true light that gives light to every person was coming into the world he was in the world and though the world had was made through him the world did not recognize him he came to that which was his own but his own did not receive him yet all who received him to those who believed in his name he gave the right to become children of god children are not born of a natural descent nor of a human decision nor a parent's will but born of god and the word became flesh and made his dwelling among us and we have seen his glory the glory of the one and only who came from the father full of grace and truth john testifies concerning me cries out this was he whom i said he who comes after me has suppressed me because he was before me from the fullness of his grace we have received one blessing after another for the law was given through moses but grace and truth came through jesus christ no one has ever seen god but god the one and only who is at the father's side has made him known i love this section of scripture one it's absolutely just to kind of nerd out for a second john is this brilliant writer and what he does is absolutely profoundly brilliant he is uh he you could tell just to be nerdy his greek is really really simple it's like kindergarten level greek you could tell it's not his native language you could study for greek for a year and be able to kind of fumble through john like it's it's very very basic but the things that he does with this are absolutely brilliant he does these plays throughout the whole text that just shows that this is his mind is its next level and the ending here is what always gets me and so it says for the law was given through moses grace of truth came through jesus christ no one has ever seen god but the god and the one but the one and only who is at the father's side has made him known that last line is a real kind of problematic for me um basically because it's not true like no one has ever seen god like if you read scripture lots of people have seen god abraham had dinner with god at the naming of isaac moses went up on mount sinai and spent so much time looking at him face to face that his face shined uh jacob wrestled with god at the river god actually broke jacob's hip isaiah has this conversation with god in the temple adam and eve walked with god lots of people have seen god it's like what is what's john doing here and then secondly the lying right before this i think us as kind of christians living in the 21st century today we've really glossed over this line and how jarring and profoundly disjointing it would have been for the original readers the original people reading this line that says for the law was given through moses but grace of truth came through jesus christ but a lot of us in the room were like yeah that's right but to the original readers this is this is even more problematic like this is this is profoundly difficult the law came from moses but truth came from jesus to these people hearing this this would be like saying um the law came from the bible but truth came from jesus right and john believes there's truth in scripture john believes in truth so what is he doing here with this why is he talking like this john believes there's truth in the law but why does he say truth didn't come from that truth came from jesus as i read this often one of the things i think about the most is uh there's this theologian i really like his name is james cohn and i don't know how many people have read james cohn he is the father of what we call a genre of theology called black theology he's a he's a black theologian and he writes primarily in the 1950s 60s 70s he is absolutely brilliant i can't recommend enough his book uh the cross and the lynching tree it's this really great book it was put out about 10 years ago really really recommend it it's really good but james come gets his start by asking this fundamental question he starts writing in the 50s and 60s and he writes this question and this is kind of what propels him into his career arc his question is this how did all those white christians not condemn slavery that's his question how did they read the same bible that we read today and think that it was okay to own another human and not only just own another human but actually think that god set this up how do they read the same bible we're reading today and come to this conclusion that we would say in this church is wildly anti-gospel further he and he's writing the 5060s so he goes even further he says how do all these white christians not condemn the jim crow era how how how do they look at this and say yeah this is what god wants and so what he asks is this question he goes on this journey of how did we get here and how do we never get here again and what he comes to this really kind of profound conclusion he says two things are at what's at play here he says this is that white christians during this time period failed to ask this fundamental question they failed to ask what is god doing not what god did but what is god actively doing right here today and what they ended up doing is they started and he would say this they read the bible like this and not like this that they read the bible and looked at the words and failed to consider the human in front of them failed to see the image of god and their black brothers and sisters that they read the bible like this but not like this and what he says is this it is easy to twist words it is easy to manipulate words but it's impossible to manipulate the person of jesus christ and so while i could twist words to be whatever i want them to be i can't twist jesus to be whatever i want him to be and that we have to read the bible like this looking out not looking down and this is the whole theme of john right like john says this jesus at one point in john says he says look you you seek out eternal life you seek eternal life in the scriptures but you failed to come to me you said that for james cone the word became flesh the word didn't become a bunch of other words that it became a person in a person that you can't manipulate and the bible is this wonderful beautiful tool for knowing the person of jesus christ right i love the bible and then john loves the bible like i've dedicated my life to teaching the bible i think it's brilliant but i have to constantly be reading like this to understand what is god doing in the world because there's this fundamental belief in christianity that really sets us apart from a lot of other things and and it's so fundamental that i think we fail to understand the profound impact that it has on how we think about the world around us it's this belief that this is silly i would say this but the silly i would say this but the belief is that jesus is alive but he didn't he died and was raised again that if jesus is alive then that means jesus is still active that jesus is lord over the world and that he's present in front of us doing things among us there's this question that we all went through this stage right i don't probably if i raise your hands we all had the bracelet that says wwjd what would jesus do right i wasn't the only one uh and that's a that's a good thing we should be asking what would jesus do that's a really great question we should ask that but i think there's a better question to be asked and i think the better question is this is what is jesus doing because he's not dead he's alive and he's still active among us and so this bible that is this wonderful tool but what i'm constantly having to ask is read and ask what is jesus doing today what is jesus doing not only in my life but in my neighbor's life the person that lives next door to me what is jesus doing and at with me at my job what is jesus doing with me at my family what is jesus doing in my life but also what is jesus doing in my enemy's life what is jesus doing and the person that i hate the most the person that i don't want to talk to what is jesus doing in their life there's this uh there's this painting that i really like it's it's called cristo pantocrator and it is this genre early on as christian christianity was starting to become more and more commonplace in the roman empire what ended up happening is they started to draw paintings of jesus but this is the first real painting we have lots of like the previous stuff's not that good this is good right so like they started to like actually do art and this is actually a painting from saint catherine's monastery in the sinai peninsula it's probably it's probably the earliest version of this cristo ponto krator it follows the same kind of thing and i want you to look at it for a second i want you to look at him the original one is probably about three feet by 18 inches across it's not that big a lot of orthodox churches if you go to it them uh they're he's painted this way on the ceiling looking down over the earth christoponto krator means christ ruler of all things if you look at it for a second i want you to stare at it where does your eye get drawn yes i heard it the eyes right okay so if i every time i look at this his face there's something i don't i don't know if i could say this but it's kind of ugly right like there's something disjointing about jesus's face here that something's not right and if you sit with it for a second you're like what is it what is it well well let me shortcut it for you because you can see i've said it for a long time but what it is is actually this it's actually two faces combined into one now you could google this if you flip it the left to the right if you flip it it actually makes it a face that you're like oh that's that's beautiful and the reason it's kind of off is you notice the hair is different on one than the other the eyes are subtly different the person that did this whoever they were is is very good artists they know what they're doing and what they're trying to do is this is that they're combining the divine and the human together that these are the two parts of jesus that jesus is fully human and fully god he's 100 god and 100 human which i always think about it with this passage the word becoming flesh the divine word becoming flesh the divine word becoming human that for john what it is the reason he says that truth came through jesus christ not through the law is that if it's not doesn't look like jesus then it's not from god and the way cohn would say it is if you can't see jesus owning another human then it's not from god if you can't see jesus segregating society then it's not from god if you can't see jesus doing something then it's not from god no matter what and so in this image it's this god coming into humanity there's the perfect representation of who god is and then if as you go down to the right is where i always go he's holding this book it's probably not the bible in its entirety it's a probably a gospel we think that because it has a cross on it and you could tell that the the gospel is is loved right it's adorned it's he's bedazzled it it's really it's something precious but it's also locked it's also sealed and jesus is holding it tightly because it's christophantocrator it's christ's ruler over all christ is ruler even over the gospels he's ruler over john it's still precious but jesus is lord and then as you move to the left here you see this kind of weird hand sign you'll see this a lot in a lot of these icons and it's this symbol it looks like his pinky's touching his thumb and it might be here it's probably not they don't it's not usually how it goes but he has these three raised fingers so the pinky the ring or the middle and the pointer and what it is is it's the trinity the father son and holy spirit all together but then you notice the ring is touching the thumb the ring is touching the thumb it's coming down and the thumb is rising up it is this divine meeting humanity that he is both god but he is also human he's the perfect representation of what god is that if we see jesus then we've seen what god is and then i think the other flip for what john also wants to do is that if we see jesus we see what humanity is that he not only shows us who god is in full truth he shows us who we are in full truthness that this idea that christ is dwelling with divine and humanity together in one place in the person of jesus that we see what we were always meant to be in jesus christ and what our neighbors were always meant to be and our kids were always meant to be and our friends were always meant to be and us as a body of campus church were always meant to be we were meant to look like jesus and that jesus is what humanity really looks like and that's the second point of john is that jesus is not only if it doesn't look like jesus it's not god if it doesn't look like jesus then it's not humanity john is this weird i think really to understand the beginning of john you have to understand the end of john john has this weird structure where he he ends and uh it's jesus being resurrected a spoiler uh but he he's resurrected and the only place in all the four gospels that we have the location of jesus being actually resurrected the location is in a garden and it's this weird text where mary has come to jaw to jesus and she sees jesus this person she's known for a long time and she sees him and she thinks he's the gardener and john like if you read that in section again he mentions a garden like five six times just garden garden garden garden and then mary thinks jesus is the gardener and you're like what what are you doing john like this is why are you hitting me over the head that this is a garden and to understand what the end is you have to look at the beginning because at the beginning the first line in the book of john is this in the beginning was the word and the word was with god in the beginning and the word was god he was with god in the beginning in the beginning in the beginning in the beginning he wants you to start getting images of genesis and then what does john talk about right so genesis says in the beginning god created the heavens and earth and then what does he talk about right after that god created light and darkness and what does john talk about right after that light and darkness and how the darkness has not overcome it and then he goes on and the way john structures his book is he actually mentions seven major miracles there's only seven miracles that jesus does in john it's far less than any of the other gospels it's this and then if you read john 1 2 and 3 john is obsessed with days he says on the next day and then on the next day and then on the next day and then where does he end in a garden that john is restructuring his gospel to be the new genesis in the beginning in the beginning like god created light and darkness jesus comes and he is the true light that overcomes the darkness seven major miracles of john seven days of creation and then where does the creation story end in a garden and where does john end in a garden and what do you have in the genesis story you have adam falling and eve falling and you have in the end you have jesus who is the new adam he shows us who we were always meant to be that this is us i i think that when i participate in the person of jesus i am becoming more and more like a human that i am becoming more and more as i line my life up with jesus i'm becoming more and more has he always wanted me to be and as i was always destined to be so my goal as a christian as a follower of jesus is to incarnate to bring on jesus into my life so that i look like him here and now what does it mean for me to be christ in this place what does it mean for me to be christ as a teacher what does it mean for me to be christ as a father what does it mean for me to be christ as whatever job i have or whatever place i find myself in life what does it mean for me to be christ there's this poem i i love and if you're not into poetry this one's really good so stick with me um it's by a guy named gerard manley hopkins who's this jesuit priest and he's writing around the 18 late 1800s early 1900s and he writes this poem and i'm going to read it because i think it embodies john as kingfishers catch fire dragonflies draw flame as tumbled over rim and roundy wells stones ring like each tucked string tells each hung bell's bow swung finds tongue to fling out brought its name each mortal thing does one thing in the same deals out that being indoors each one dwells selfs goes itself myself it speaks and spells crying what i do is for me and for that i came but i say more the just man justices keeps grace that keeps all his goings graces acts in god's eye what in god's eye he is christ for christ plays in ten thousand places lovely and limbs and lovely in eyes not his to the father through the features of men's faces christ plays in ten thousand places lovely and limbs and lovely and eyes not his to the father through the features of men's faces worship team you can come up but i i think for john what it is is we spend a lot of time saying well i'm just human right and and yeah you are but also no you're not because jesus is what human looks like jesus is what humanity looks like it looks like jesus says with jesus christ i'm becoming more and more human i'm becoming who god always intentioned me to be and through jesus i'm seeing both who god really is but who we really are that christ is playing out in 10 000 places lovely in limbs and lovely in eyes through the features of humanity's faces and so i think one of the things that i get from this passage of john this beginning of john is this is that yes i can worship god through reading my bible and my quiet time yes that is good but i can also worship god through encountering christ and my neighbor through encountering christ in my enemy through encountering christ through the person i hate most that when i see jesus and lovely in their limbs and faces that i am in the act of worshiping god and when i do that i am becoming more and more as i was always destined to be that i want to become the kind of person that reads my bible like this looking out into the world and saying what is god doing here what is god doing in this person's life that every person i encounter that i am asking why where is christ in you today and how can i be more christ in this moment because in jesus we both see who christ who god really is if it doesn't look like jesus then it's not from god and if it doesn't look like jesus then it's not fully human and i want to become more and more what god always wanted me to be so this week may every encounter that you come into whether it's at your work maybe that's with your kids maybe that's with in your school with your friends maybe that's person you see at the grocery store maybe that's your neighbor you haven't ever talked to maybe that's the person on the internet that is driving you nuts may you come to see christ in them that christ is pantocrator he is ruler over all and that he is not dead but that he is alive and that he is at work and everyone you come in contact with whether you want him to be or not maybe you come to see christ playing out in ten thousand places lovely and limbs and lovely and faces that are not his stand with us church as we close out our worship this morning [Music] glorious love immanuel god is with us music [Music] vine of the branches son of god prince of about you yes it's all about you jesus good morning we're tim and sheila don and we've been asked to share our thoughts with you this morning about giving there are at least two ways to think about giving a loving relational motivation and a practical how will my money be used from the loving perspective for example our children and then our grandchildren used to bring us gifts that they had made no matter how sprawled or messy they were they went up on the wall we have an art gallery on the ceiling and two walls in the stairwell down to the basement lined with gifts from the hands of the little ones who wanted to say they loved us these are a constant reminder we are loved and a constant tug on our hearts to remind us how much we love them the scripture says lay not for yourselves treasures on earth but rather treasures in heaven for where your treasure is there will your heart be also it is also true that where our hearts are we will place our treasures in our if our hearts are focused on our relationship with god just like our children we're focused on loving us we naturally will want to bring offerings to him the resources the children used to make our art projects were provided by their parents the resources we returned to the lord are provided by him the lord treasures the gift he provides to us that we bring back to him and on the practical side there is something within us that likes to know that our investment is paying dividends or accomplishing some ministry goal and that's understandable written reports and balance sheets just fall short of really satisfying our desire to know where our finances are going nothing informs us more than being physically present in a ministry parents volunteering with our family ministry team see the excitement and the maturing of their babies in the older children the time and money invested here reaps great dividends project kids need volunteers are up close and personal with the lives of families in our neighborhood the appreciation expressed by these families is heartwarming when campus members have the privilege of short-term mission trips all over the world they learn firsthand where where their money is going we cannot all go on those missions but we can listen to the reports of those who return to sit with staff during planning sessions each monday morning would be would be for us to be impressed with the hearts of all our ministers their talent and energy for the vision of campus is amazing of course not every member of campus has or can have these first-hand experiences but we do see the result of our support in all the ways campus impacts the community and the world so on the relational side we give out of love because we are the recipient of love greater than we can imagine and on the practical side we see the return on our giving in earthly results that have eternal implications campus church is uncommonly generous and the results are eternal thank you campus uh derek thanks so much uh for bringing the word to us this morning powerful powerful message um thanks for challenging us and giving us those insights worship team they're gone but thank them for leading us to worship this morning um folks thank you guys so much for being here um i just pray that as we move forward this week that we be jesus uh we look for jesus and we realize that our jesus is alive go in peace you
