today on from his heart pastor jeff shreeve is in his timely new series called sticking points overcoming obstacles to faith that'll help you love and trust god no matter the challenge in life by learning how to break the chains of guilt and shame she was born in 1973 in california to a well-to-do family her father was a doctor and oncologist her mother was an author they named her monica monica grew up going to school on the west coast when she was a teenager her parents got divorced and it was a a bitter divorce and it really left scars in her heart when she was a young girl in her 20s she got an unpaid internship in washington d.c that turned into a paid position in washington d.c she was an unknown person until 1998 and then she became a household name there's not a person in this room who hasn't heard the name monica lewinsky she did some terrible things and those terrible things were broadcast around the nation and around the world a young girl in her 20s was not prepared for the ridicule the scorn the hatred that was directed at her she said when i would shower my mom made me leave the door open so that she could make sure she wasn't slashing her wrists or doing something like that she said the shame stuck to me like tar she tried to move away she moved out of the country tried to start over but in her own words she said i was stuck stuck in guilt and shame we're in a sermon series called sticking points overcoming obstacles to faith and today we want to talk about the major sticking point of guilt and shame monica lewinsky grew up jewish i don't know what her spiritual beliefs are but i know that she is one who knows a lot about guilt and shame and no doubt there are many in this room many under the sound of my voice and you haven't had your sin plastered all over the news as she did month after month after month after month but you know something about guilt and shame we know that that is a terrible emotion when you're guilt-ridden you know when you think of guilt and shame and remorse those are all three words that go together and remorse is an interesting word it comes from the latin it's two words in latin the the main word mordere means to bite and re-morter a means to bite again and again and again and again and again and that's what a guilty conscience does it just bites you over and over and over again and it condemns you it accuses you and condemns you junoval the roman poet said this no tortures the poet's feign can match that fierce unutterable pain he feels who day and night devoid of rest carries his own accuser within his breast hey what do you do if you have done something that violated your moral conscience that caused you to uh feel such tremendous remorse such guilt such shame over what you've done some kind of sexual sin some kind of a lie that really hurt a lot of people maybe it's an abortion for you it's something that has violated your standards to such an extent that you wonder can i go on you know many people do what monaco is tempted to do they commit suicide they just can't take it anymore the poster child for that is judas iscariot who was so engulfed in remorse that he took the 30 pieces of silver brought it back to the chief priest and said i have sinned against innocent blood and they said what is that to us see to that yourself and he went out and hanged himself trying to escape the hell within him he stepped into the hell before him some people respond to guilt and shame be that way i'm gonna just kill myself other people they turn to alcohol and drugs i'm gonna try and deaden this pain of this accuser inside my breast other people say well i'm just gonna bury myself in my work and maybe i can overcome with some success at work other people try and escape try and move away but that guilty conscience comes with them no matter where they go hey what are we to do when we fall into guilt and shame how can we get past our past listen i have good news today from the word of god then no matter what you've done no matter what is in your past no matter how badly you might be stuck today in guilt and shame the lord is the chain breaker he is the god who wants to set us free jesus came to set the captives free and he has the prescription for our pain to set us free from the chains of guilt and shame in luke chapter 15 jesus told that familiar story the parable of the prodigal son it's probably the most familiar parable that he ever told charles dickens called it the greatest short story ever written it's not a long story but it's a powerful story and in that story we see how do we get out of guilt and shame luke chapter 15 i'll begin reading in verse 11. the scripture says and he said jesus said a certain man had two sons and the younger of them said to his father father give me the share of the estate that falls to me and he divided his wealth between them and not many days later the younger son gathered everything together and went on a journey into a distant country and there he squandered his estate with loose living now when he had spent everything a severe famine occurred in that country and he began to be in need and he went and attached himself to one of the citizens of that country and he sent him into his fields to feed swine and he was longing to fill his stomach with the pods that the swine were eating and no one was giving anything to him such a vivid story such a powerful story now i want you to see from this story how you can break free from guilt and shame but the three requirements in order to break free so that you don't have to live under constant condemnation from your past requirement number one you take an honest look at your life you look soberly in the mirror you quit blaming your mother your father your friends your brother whoever it might be you quit blaming them you look soberly at yourself in the mirror we don't like to do that and uh the newer generation really doesn't like to do that to look at themselves hey you're responsible for you i'm responsible for me we're going to have to give an account one day to god and so if you want to break free you have to honestly look at your life and there are three questions that are critical question number one what have you done what have you done look honestly at what you've done don't try and put lipstick on a pig don't try and dress it up look honestly at what you've done what did the prodigal do see to understand this story you have to understand that in the the mindset of the jews in in the the mindset of the first century middle east uh society it was shame honor or honor shame uh rather is a better way to look at it honor shame and so you did everything for honor you tried to avoid shame at all costs well in uh uh hearing this story if you are conditioned to honor and shame honor is good that's what we're shooting for shame is to be shunned at all costs we don't do anything to produce shame this story is overflowing with shame it's just a shame smorgasbord so the younger son the father has two sons the younger son says to his father i can't just sit around and waste my life waiting for you to die so give me the share of the inheritance that belongs to me the older would get two-thirds the younger would get a third i want to get a third of my inheritance now dad because i'm just tired of waiting on you to die can you imagine saying that even today to your father i just i just wish you were dead so i could get what you have now it's bad enough today if you lived in that time period where it was very uh honor shame associated people would hear that and they'd be like nobody would ever do that that would be so far out of bounds but that's what's that's what this boy did and so he gets his father his father responds to it now the father in the minds of the people hearing it would have been like hey he should have kicked him out of the family just that one request he should have slapped him across the face but the father acquiesces to the younger son's uh request and says okay and so the father's a land holder he he he has a lot of wealth obviously and so he he cashes out or does whatever he does gives the son a third of his estate and so the son takes the third estate and then he turns it to cash he has to sell it so if you uh if your father gave you a third of his land well what would you do i mean what can i do with the third of the land dad's still alive so i have to sell it who's gonna buy it because they can't get it yet until my father dies so i have to sell it to somebody who's willing to wait on it and somebody who's willing to wait on it is going to buy it on the cheap and so he takes a third of what his father gives him and he sells it on the cheap and he gets the cash and he gets out of town he goes to find his uh his fun and uh he starts to waste his wealth with riotous living with loose living the brother the elder brother is gonna say hey this son of yours uh wasted his wealth with harlots and so that's what he's doing with the money he's spending it on wine women and song he's getting drunk he's going to parties he's paying women to have relations with him and he's just having a big time but then the money runs out and then when the money runs out the friends run out because they're not two friends and then a famine hits and then he starts to starve to death and nobody's giving anything to him and so he attaches himself to uh somebody that had wealth some citizen attaches himself that's it's like a beggar that just won't let you go he's just like holding on to your pant like please help me help me help me give me a job give me a job the guy's finally just like here you go to the pigs i have some hogs you go there and you feed them didn't really have a job that guy just kind of got rid of him and so he went there and he is feeding pigs he's a jew feeding pigs and if that's not bad enough he's longing to eat the pig slop the pods that the hogs were eating his life was filled with guilt was filled with shame because of what he had done hey what have you done what have you done that you try and block out you know monica lewinsky for the longest time she didn't ever want to talk about what she had done why because it brought back such terrible horrible memories so i don't like to talk about that but you know if you're stuck in guilt and shame you have to deal with things you have to look soberly in the mirror what have you done has it been an abortion what have you done is it sexual immorality has there been some homosexuality sex before you're married sex inside of your marriage with somebody else that's called adultery have you lied have you cheated have you stolen what is it that you have done you have to look soberly at yourself second question what has been done to you did you know that there are a lot of people who are living in guilt and shame and it's not so much what they've done it's what's been done to them many people have been sexually abused the statistics uh just keep getting higher with uh people experiencing sexual abuse when they were children and and the the people the adults who should have been protecting them ended up abusing them and we tell people that family life listen what happened to you is not your fault but it is your problem because it happened to you and you have to learn to process this correctly otherwise you will live a shame filled life why did this happen to me it must have happened to me because there's something bad about me what have you done what has been done to you and thirdly what has become your identity you know guilt and shame are very closely related but when you get more specific they're different guilt has to do with something wrong that i have done i did something that was wrong and i feel guilty about it it has to do with the action shame is more internalized guilt shame said it's not what i've done but it's who i am it's not that i have done wrong it's that i am wrong see guilt deals with the do shame deals with the who and those things go together because the more guilty you are the more you've done wrong the more you feel badly about yourself and the more you feel like there's something wrong with me and i am the problem it's not just i've done wrong but i am wrong i am bad the prodigal definitely felt guilt and he felt shame and he said i'm no longer worthy to be called my father's son i just need to be like a hired hand like a day laborer that's all i'm if i come back to my father that's the best i could hope for is he would make me a third class citizen in on the farm because my identity has been trashed i can't be called a son anymore that's what was going through his head he his guilt had turned into shame and it was deep in his heart this is who i am you know when you do wrong things that you know are wrong you willfully do wrong things you know jesus tells three stories in luke chapter 15 the lost sheep the lost coin and the lost son and and the lost sheep is uh foolishly lost the lost coin is haphazardly lost the lost son is willfully lost he chose to leave home he chose to diss his father and to leave home and he did some terrible things when you do terrible things and trashy things it makes you feel trashy and when you feel trashy you're inclined to do trashy things and when you do trashy things you feel more trashy and as you feel more trashy you do more trashy things it's a vicious cycle that you get into and you can't seem to get out when you're filled with shame you just feel like a loser you feel second class third class fourth class no wonder people treat me as poorly as they do i would treat me uh poorly too because i hate myself a little poem i like that says this i have to live with myself and so i want to be fit for myself to know i want to be able as the days go by to look myself straight in the eye i don't want to stand with the setting sun and hate myself for the things i've done do you break free step number one the first requirement you take an honest look at your life requirement number two you take a necessary departure from your pigsty you leave the pigsty that's necessary now here's the prodigal he disses his father in such a an outlandish way he takes what his father had earned and built he takes it and he sells it for cheap he takes the money and he spends the father's money on sin on prostitutes on alcohol and drugs and whatever else he's just having a big time and you know sin is pleasurable if anybody tells you sin is not pleasurable they're not being honest with you because the devil's too smart to go fishing without any bait on his hook sin is pleasurable the bible talks about the passing pleasures of sin it's pleasurable but it's only pleasurable for a season all the pleasure is on the front end and then on the back end there is misery temporary pleasure that leads to lasting pain and misery and so this prodigal he had a big time for a while until the money ran out and when the money ran out the friends ran out run out whatever the friends came out and they ran out and so from there he had nothing and no one was giving anything to him and he ends up at the pigsty you know we don't see when we're tempted to sin when we're tempted to experience sexual sin and and i think there's something about sexual sin that brings the guilt and shame more than almost any other sin monica lewinsky felt such guilt and shame why because it was tied to sexual sin and there's a sin that that when you sin with your body against your own body and and in sexual immorality there's just something about it that makes you feel so guilty and so ashamed and that's how he felt and he's there at the pigsty and the scripture says at the pigsty he comes to his senses he says wait a minute i mean he's just longing to dip his hand in the pig slop and to grab a bite he says wait a minute do not my father's hired men the day laborers that work for my dad do not they have enough to eat more than enough to eat because my dad is generous and good and he said this is what i'm going to do i'm going to get up and i'm going to go to my father and i'm going to say father i've sinned against heaven and in your sight i'm no longer worthy to be called your son make me as one of your hired men and he got up and left he is a picture of repentance listen if you're gonna get right with god if you're gonna break the chains of sin and shame and guilt you have to repent no one can get right with god without repentance repentance metanoia means to change your mind and it also means to change your direction you're going the wrong way you have to turn around you change your mind what you think about sin what you think about self what you think about the savior and you say i'm going the wrong direction i need to leave this pigsty and i need to go back and get myself right with god i can't get right with god at the pigsty you know why i get on a soapbox as it relates to uh the sexual revolution as it relates to homosexuality uh being accepted in so many churches today here's why i get it uh upset about that is because that is cutting the potential lifeline off from people who are trapped in that sin why because they have left the father they have gone after their own sin they followed the lusts of their heart this is what i want to do and they find themselves at the pigsty and they want to feel good at the pigsty because their conscience is killing them and so they need people to tell them you're okay you're okay you're okay and those who tell them you're okay at the pigsty god loves you at the pigsty he doesn't he he's not upset with you at the pigsty you can just serve god at the pigsty you can't that's a lie i don't care what your sin is if you say well i'm just going to embrace this sin and i'm going to stay at the pigsty you'll never ever ever get right with god because jesus said unless you repent you will all likewise perish you have to repent you have to leave that behind and you have to get your self away from the sin away from the pigsty and get yourself right with god hey if you're living with your boyfriend your girlfriend and you're not married and you say well i would really want to serve god the way you serve god the way you get right with god is you leave that immoral situation you can't do that you can't stay in that somebody says well i'm an exotic dancer and that's how i make my living well you got to leave that because you can't honor god with that that's dishonorable to god that's a that's a sin before god and so that's a pigsty and you got to leave the pigsty if you're going to get right with god you have to repent and the prodigal said i will get up and go to my father and say father i've sinned against heaven and in your sight i'm no longer worthy to be called your son make me as one of your hired men and then it says and he got up and went to his father he said he was going to do it and he did it no one can get right with god without repentance and no one can get right with god without action it's easy to say you're going to do this it's totally different to say and i'm doing it i had a man come see me he was at the pigsty his life had gotten totally out of control and he was dealing with uh problem uh a problem with alcohol he was dealing with anger he was dealing with terrible relationships all sorts of things he came to me and he said i'm sick of where i am i don't want to be here anymore help me and so i said well let's pray and let's map out a plan of action for you to get your life right with god and he listened and he said yes that's what i want to do and we prayed and he said that's what i want to do and he left my office and i never saw him again until i did his funeral some months later he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound he said he was going to leave the pigsty but it was just empty talk there was no action to it what is real faith what's a step of faith we call it a step of faith because the step of faith doesn't sit there a step of faith moves and repentance is not just talking a big game repentance is actually doing it so that's the second requirement you take a necessary departure from your pigsty and then requirement number three you take a biblical stand on the truth of god a biblical stand on the truth of god here's the problem that you have here's the problem that i have here's the problem that we have is when it comes to truth and error truth and lies it's so much easier to believe lies and the devil is the liar and the father of lies and when man when you sin and you do something that violates your conscience and that violates the commands of god and is a step way out of bounds and you know i have sinned terribly well then the devil comes in and he makes you feel so bad about it he comes and just beats you up with guilt and condemnation he's he's called the accuser of the brethren of the brethren the the name devil means accuser false accuser slanderer and so he comes and beats you up and that's how you feel and so his lies seem to be so much like the truth because it's exactly how you feel i feel like a bum and a scum and a loser i feel like there's no way god would have anything to do with me i feel like god should hate me because i hate me for what i've done adrian rogers in his treatment of this text he postulates a different ending to the story he said this is how our minds think of this story here's the prodigal and he comes to his senses and he says i'm going to go home and go to my father and maybe he'll receive me and he goes home and goes to his father and he comes to the house he sees the light is on in the house and he knocks at the door and nobody answers the door and he knocks again at the door and nobody answers the door and he knocks again at the door and finally his mother answers the door and his mother opens the door and says son he said mother i'm home i need to see dad and she said well son you know that your father is very very angry i know mom i just i gotta see dad i gotta talk to dad can you please tell dad that his youngest son is at the door his youngest son has come home he's at the door he wants to talk to his dad and she said well i'll go ask him she closes the door she's gone for a good while she comes back she opens the door and she says son i don't know how to tell you this but your father said he no longer has a younger son good day and closes the door can you imagine but that's the way a lot of us think there's no way god would want to have anything to do with me because of what i've done but here's the truth of the story it says beginning in verse 20 and he got up and came to his father but while he was still a long way off his father saw him and felt compassion for him and ran and embraced him and kissed him the father ran this is another shameful thing this see this is a smorgasbord of shame in the story of the prodigal son fathers wore long robes the men of israel in order to run with a long robe you had to do what the scripture calls girding up your loins where you take your robes and you uh gather them together and you stuff them in your belt and you expose your legs that was a shameful thing fathers didn't do that you got to a certain age and you never exposed your legs that was a shameful thing even people today a shameful thing they don't like to wear shorts older people a lot of older people don't like to wear shorts they definitely don't like to take off their shirt and most of us are glad but yeah you know it's just like you just don't do that i saw a movie with clint eastwood he's 80 something years old he took off his shirt it's like clint please don't do that again that's just not good uh it's it's called gravity and it's coming for you and so he did this and it's a shameful thing but he ran to his son you know why he ran to him i just learned this today i never thought about this before he ran to him because that son had come back to the village he had shamed his father he had shamed his family he had shamed the village and the father knew my son is going to be bombarded with mockery and criticism and shame and i'm going to shield him from that the father ran to him and he embraced him and he kissed him his pig smelling son kissed him repeatedly over and over again he felt compassion for him he still loved him listen god still loves you the devil will tell you god doesn't love you anymore because of what you've done god doesn't love you anymore because you looked at this this pornography and it's just so horrible and so terrible and you engaged in that because you engaged in this affair in this sexual immorality in this uh this party scene and you have violated so many of your principles and god doesn't love you anymore but the truth is god does love you he still loves you many of you may remember the story true story about what happened to stephen curtis chapman and his family has six kids three adopted children from china his little adopted daughter maria five years old she was playing outside and his son will franklin was coming home 17 year old boy was coming home and when he pulled the vehicle in the little daughter his little little sister maria she ran to the truck he didn't see her he ran over her they rushed to her to try and save her they called 911 they put her in the ambulance stephen curtis chapman was in his vehicle following the ambulance to the hospital and he saw his son before he left the house and the yard he saw his son just in a heap just overcome with guilt and shame and he rolled down the window and he yelled out to his son will franklin your father loves you stephen curtis chapman said i was afraid that i was going to lose two children that day that i was going to lose will franklin to guilt and shame and remorse and grief hey maybe you're here and you say i've done so many bad things as one guy told me jeff if you really knew me you wouldn't like me very much and you feel like that i want you to know that god lowers the window of heaven and he yells your name and says i still love you i still love you the father ran to his son he embraced his son hey god will do the same to you if you will leave the pigsty of your sin he still loves you he will forgive you and the son said to his father verse 21 father i have sinned against heaven and in your sight i am no longer worthy to be called your son he'll forgive you this boy confessed his sin to god and the father forgave him listen the apostle paul said he was the chief of sinners and the lord forgave him he said i'm a trophy of god's grace if god can forgive me he can forgive you and some have said yeah but that was when he was saul of tarsus what do you do if you're a christian and you sin terribly then is there any hope for us yes peter is the hope for us because peter was a believer in the lord jesus when he denied three times that he even knew him and the lord forgave peter the lord forgives the lost the person that doesn't know christ people like saul of tarsus and turns them into paul the great apostle and the lord forgives those who know christ who do terrible horrible things people like peter who in my estimation committed the greatest of sins to deny that you even know jesus three times back to back to back in the lord's hour of need if we confess our sins he's faithful and just forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness he still loves you he'll forgive you he'll restore you his little soliloquy the protocol at the pigsty was uh i've sinned against heaven and you're in your sight i'm no longer worthy to be called your son make me as one of your hired men but he doesn't say that when he comes to the father that is left out verse 22 but the father said to his slaves quickly bring out the best robe and put it on him and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet maybe the son was getting ready to say make me as one of your hired men and he looked at his father and he experienced and saw that look of grace and of acceptance and of forgiveness and he knew it would be an insult to the father's grace to say i can't be your son just make me as one of your hired men and so he didn't say anymore or maybe it was the father that just shushed him but the father immediately said put a robe on him a robe of righteousness in the book of isaiah said he has wrapped me with the garments of salvation with a robe of righteousness i came with my dirty rags and he put upon me his robe of righteousness he put a ring on his finger that's not just a piece of jewelry that ring was used to seal covenants and documents and to do business in the father's name you're not a hired servant you're not a hired man you're my son and here's the ring of sonship and i put shoes on your feet the slaves went barefoot the sons wore shoes he gave him his identity back as his own dear son god will restore you you don't have to live like a second-class christian when you've sinned terribly horribly because as monica lewinsky said my sin what i did was broadcast all over the airwaves she said how would you do if we read all your personal emails if we were privy to all your personal phone calls if everything that you did was plastered out for all to see how much guilt and shame would you feel hey the lord forgives he loves he restores and then it says he will rejoice over you and bring the fattened calf kill it and let us eat and be merry for this son of mine was dead and has come to life again he was lost and has been found and he began to be mary they had a party kill the fatted calf the fatted calf would feed over a hundred people he's inviting the whole village to come and celebrate because this son of mine was dead and he's come to life again he was lost and has been found now we like to say that uh when a person gives his or her life to christ we say well the angels in heaven are rejoicing no the father in heaven is rejoicing and he says to the angels rejoice with me he's throwing the party he is the one who has such tremendous joy that it overflows from his heart to all those in attendance this son of mine was dead and he's come to life again now some say well jeff what you don't understand is that that's all wonderful and fine but i can't forgive myself and that's why i'm stuck so let me get this right the god of the universe who is holy holy holy he says that he forgives you but your standards are higher than his so you can't forgive yourself you know the bible never says anywhere that we are supposed to forgive ourselves what the bible does say we're supposed to receive his forgiveness a person who says i can't forgive myself is basically saying i can't believe that god would forgive me and i won't believe that god would forgive me so i'm just going to stay locked down in guilt and shame how foolish is that there's a party that the lord wants to throw and he wants you to be uh the guest of honor alongside of him who is the person of honor the host of honor and you say no i can't because i don't really believe that you want to do this for me i don't believe you could do this for me how foolish how much better it is to say god that is grace that blows me away that you would love me that you would forgive me that you would restore me that you would throw a party and have me there yeah i want to come it doesn't make sense to me but i receive it by faith in your word you don't have to forgive yourself you just receive his forgiveness michael quist wrote a prayer that i think sums up how many of us feel and as we struggle with guilt and shame he tells us this in his prayer i have fallen lord once more i can't go on i'll never succeed i'm ashamed i don't dare look at you and yet i struggled lord for i knew you were right near me bending over me watching but temptation blew like a hurricane and instead of looking at you i turned my head away i stepped aside while you stood silent sorrowful like the spurn fiance who sees his loved one carried away by the enemy when the wind died down as suddenly as it had risen when the lightning ceased after proudly streaking the darkness all of a sudden i found myself alone ashamed disgusted with my sin in my hands this sin that i selected the way a customer makes his purchase this sin that i have paid for and cannot return for the shopkeeper is no longer there this tasteless sin this odorless sin this sin that sickens me that i have wanted but want no more that i have imagined sought played with fondle for a long time that i finally embraced while turning coldly away from you my arms outstretched my eyes and heart irresistibly drawn this sin that i have grasped and consumed with gluttony it's mine now but it possesses me as the spiderweb holds captive the fly it's mine it sticks to me it flows in my veins it fills my heart it is slipped in everywhere as darkness slips into the forest at dusk and it fills all the patches of light i can't get rid of it i run from it the way one tries to lose a stray dog but it catches up with me and bounds joyfully against my legs everyone must notice i'm so ashamed that i feel like crawling to avoid being seen i'm ashamed of being seen by my friends i'm ashamed of being seen by you lord for you loved me and i forgot you lord don't look at me like that for i'm naked i'm dirty i'm down i'm shattered with no strength left i dare make no more promises i can only lie bowed before you you ever felt like that anybody ever felt like that i've felt like that before here's the father's response come son look up isn't it mainly your pride that is wounded if you loved me you would grieve but you would also trust do you think that there's a limit to my love do you think that for a moment i stopped loving you but you still rely on yourself son you must rely only on me ask my pardon and get up quickly you see it's not falling that is the worst but staying on the ground maybe you've come to the pigsty in your life it's not falling just the worst it's not being at the pigsty that's the worst it's staying on the ground god is calling opening the windows of heaven he's yelling out your name i still love you and if you will leave your sin and come to me you'll find my arms open wide and i will forgive you and i will cleanse you and i will restore you and i'll throw a party for you if you will come to
