welcome to sewveryeasy my name is laura and there's a lot of different sewing machine feet that we can get for our sewing machine well the reason is there's a lot of different things that we can do with our sewing machine many different applications and many different things that we can sew and because of that well we get lots of different feet to choose from machines are all designed a little bit different so it's important that we get the right foot that's designed for our machines the foot might look the same but it might not be tall enough so it's not going to fit the feed dogs or it's not in the right angle for that needle so the needle can smash down on that foot i find the best place to get the feet for your sewing machine is where you bought your sewing machine or a store that sells your brand of machines if all else fails you can always go to a sewing machine repair shop they're able to get almost any foot that we need and you'll make sure you get the right foot so today let's visit the braiding foot and see how many different things we can do with it the braiding foot has this hole going through the front which means we're going to be able to use that hole to put stuff in and it keeps it from moving so we're going to be able to stitch on each side of whatever we're putting in that hole the back has an area that has been cut out that cutout allows thick things to run underneath the foot and line up against this bar so whatever you're stitching if it's thick it's going to butt up against that end so as you're stitching it keeps it exactly in that spot which means we're going to keep that needle in the spot that we want for this particular model there is a line right along the edge of that foot that line is duplicating the line on the back so from the front you're going to see where that edge is so that edge along the bottom is going to hold things in place and you can see where it lines up in the front so visually you're going to be able to see where that is it also has a slotted opening and that way you can do a zigzag or a decorative stitch as well as your straight stitch if you cannot find a braiding foot you can find something very similar and it's called an overlock foot some of the overlocked feet do have that hole in the center with that slot where we can stitch some type of a zigzag or a decorative stitch what we're looking for is that hole in the center and that notch cut out on the back so let's go to the machine and try out some of these different trims the foot is designed for a braid so a braid is this very heavy trim where it's heavier down the center but the sides are thin and we need to stitch down along these sides to secure this on the fabric so that piece that's cut out underneath is going to run along this heavy piece that needle is going to be able to stitch right along this edge and because of that mark on the front we're going to be able to use that as a guide you will line up the edge of the fabric or the edge of the braid making sure that that needle is in line to stitch this side so that wedge is going to help guide this fabric so it's going to run right along that edge so we're able just to stitch that very small edge we can turn that around and stitch down the second edge so it really does sew that down with the perfect stitches along that edge there are other forms of braids that you can use line it up and if you need to you can move your needle one side or the other so we can use it for different braids a heavy twill or strapping will also work fine because that is going to follow right along that edge i'm going to be able to let that foot do all the work and stitch right along the edge so i've moved my needle over and there's very little guiding i need to do it automatically wants to do it so it really does go nicely along that edge you can also get a fringe so fringe is stitched along the bottom so that the fringe is usually hanging off so in that case we're going to be able to stitch it with this fringe sticking out put this little piece along the edge of my fabric and then stitch and i have gone really really close to that edge but by moving that needle you can stitch in these areas so you're stitching right over top of that little braid inside so those are some fun things to use with that edge along the back but we do have that hole which means we're going to be able to stitch over top of things for example this elastic clean up your edge and put that elastic in whatever you put in this little hole it does need to run freely so you can start and anchor that last again and you're going to want to just catch that elastic to start with and that way the elastic is anchored then we need to set the zigzag so it's going to go on one side and then the other i'm going on each side of that elastic which means i can pull this and gather it if i do not want to gather it but i want the machine to gather it i will need to go very tightly on each side and then i will be able to pull this elastic as i'm stitching over top so you'll need to hold the back and stitch once you've gone so far pull hold it down and stitch so this first area is where i did the large stitching and pulled the elastic after this area is where i have stitched as i've been pulling that elastic we can also stitch wool and ribbon if what you're putting in is too soft to feed that in i like to use these little loops these loops are actually designed for your teeth and they work great they're long and they'll fit right into that hole so that works just like a needle threader and we'll pull that in so i'm going to be able to couch over top of this so you would use matching thread and this is going to stitch this down but because we have that hole there it means we can just do any shape we want the wool will follow along so it doesn't matter where i go that wool will be sure to follow and that matching thread would just blend right in this makes a great decoration for clothing and quilts you can also combine layers i will be able to take whatever trim i want and stitch it on top of another trim the trim is going to follow along the bottom and whatever string or rope you put in is going to follow along the top and it's just going to follow along and with matching thread this is just going to add another dimension you can also use more than one piece of embroidery floss what we're looking for is just that freedom to go inside and it's just going to stitch it down what i really love to stitch over top is this wire that bends and they fit right inside so we can double up on things and stitch that wire down going on each side of the wire so i can turn any trim into a formable trim you can also stitch that pipe cleaner along the edge of fabric so you can stitch it right along the edge so now you can shape the edge of the fabric the pipe cleaner is a lot of fun to stitch on we just need to make sure we're stitching on each side and not going through that wire and of course we can use it just to stitch down a really thin ribbon put the machine to a straight stitch and it's going to stitch down the middle of that thin ribbon and that ribbon is going to follow right along and we stitched right down the center as with all trims i would recommend always testing first and you can also put a stabilizer on the back if need be so from ribbons and wool and thin stretchy elastic fun ribbon and even metal wire can go through that foot which means we can be very creative and take regular sewing projects and regular craft projects and have a little fun with them and being able to stitch over top of some of these fun things definitely makes our sewing well even a little bit more fun now if you've used the braiding foot for something else i'd love to hear about it and thank you for joining me today on sewveryeasy feel free to subscribe and as always come on back let's see what we're talking about next time in the sewing room bye for now you
