season everyone [Music] good afternoon we are coming to you live from penticton bc this is the 2020 ashley home store curling classic i am mary lou richter and i'm joined by craig mccloud hey greg hi mary lou looking forward to this game it should be uh two of the top teams in the world uh should be a good game exactly we have uh team brad jacobs versus uh team glenn howard on the ice today uh let's go through the teams here we have uh the skip for jacobs is brad jacobs of course third mark kennedy second ej hardin and lead ryan hardin for team howard we have glen howard at skip scott howard at third david mathers at uh second and tim march at lead team howard has the uh hammer in this in this uh or sorry team jacobs has the hammer sorry about that they do a draw to the button to determine uh who has the last rock advantage in the first end that is accumulated through the whole event and used for any kind of tie breaks of course there are a few modifications this year as we're dealing with covid19 as the whole world is a couple of the big things that you'll notice is uh only one sweeper is designated for the shot and that can be uh so one sweeper continues down the ice till the far hog line and then it can be taken over by the other sweeper or the skip can come out and help as well but just generally one sweeper per rock you are not allowed to sweep the opposition's rock behind the t line unless it's you are the throwing team and you've boy pete uh thrown that rock so you're kind of at the mercy of just letting it run when you're not uh the throwing team yeah just uh it's gonna be a pretty conservative start here it's pretty wide open uh it doesn't surprise me uh during the draw out of the button uh the draw times were just slightly slower so both teams are probably just making sure that they do it right and to make sure that they understand the speed of the ice calling the freeze to the back one just a nice conservative call when you have the hammer [Applause] team jacobs actually both teams were on the ice this morning team jacob's room right now in a tie break against tyler tardy line's pretty good and uh howard a little bit of room uh jason montgomery pearl this morning girl if you can so they're both wondering girl when you can't that's a pretty nice shot in the first end yeah no kidding yeah an option there uh would have been to throw a corner guard but like i said earlier uh it appears they're playing it a little more conservative by drawing down to the perfect way buddy with the back one well yeah and what we saw on this morning's draw was if you throw a really nice sweeper's weight you'll get some beautiful finish at the end if you overthrow anything it will run fairly straight that works more corner no t-line's fine glenn threw his last rock for the draw to the button he was concerned that his rock was a little bit straighter so they may have made a change there switch those up [Applause] yep ej hardin hard [Applause] clean clean [Music] [Applause] all games are eight ends extra end if if the game is tied after the eight ends there are 18 teams in this year's ashley home store curling classic each pool there are three pools so each pool does a round robin with each team and then the top over uh 12 overall teams advance to the playoffs sunday afternoon so we'll be broadcasting uh live streaming a game every draw so stay tuned uh the there is a schedule on the curling club website and also we're doing this for free so no cost to the viewing audience and we really appreciate you all tuning in we our fourth annual and it's just been fantastic we're really missing the um the fans here unfortunately due to covid we've had to have very few people in the building just keep everybody protected but uh usually you hear the roar of the crowd you may not hear that much today but we're just so so thankful that we can have this event up and running this year yeah the club has done a great job and as far as kuvit is concerned uh the players and and people that are here watching are separated uh everybody uh is required to wear masks the building has been sanitized throughout the day boy mark so yeah they're doing a good job yeah and then just the you'll notice on the ice there are three small black squares on the ice surface and that's where the team that um is not throwing is standing just to give the throwing team lots of room and social distancing [Applause] this is glenn's first rock of the opening end and it's going to hang on the edge there nice little rule at all sit this one out pete my prediction is going to be a blank end here i'm not even going to take that no i didn't think you would what the give me a good spot to hit the ring maybe i'll turn to the button that surprised them they're not sure if it picked or something um i know when it was coming out there was some ah news but i'm not sure what that meant looked like he threw it pretty clean hey straw yeah right there what's up glenn it's just gonna put it another rock in the rings tried all the button might be a little like i was going through no degree not far out okay i think it was you could feel it thick and it just uh it didn't fall you know i thought with peel it'd be fine yeah it's all good i got lost i got lost point is never a bad thing sit down it's got to sit really gotta sit [Music] it's hot it's wheat going pretty strong here [Music] no i want that out turn again no we usually don't see misses from these two that's for sure i think that's the first time i've ever seen yeah two misses back to back from these players so brad's gonna uh try the shot again and try to roll out blank the first hand maintain hammer for the second yeah he's got to be concerned uh about what happened on the on his first one uh hopefully he can get that out of his mind all right that's fine mark same ice i'll just try to throw it better i like this uh get the question out of his head too you know make the shot and um just write it off with something weird that happened on his first yeah he said he'd throw this one better so he may have got the first one going slightly and yeah if you're not positive with best events oh for sure that was so strange just kind of thirteen points when i let it go it just kind of felt like i was going through like a ton of pebble thanks guys you're good keep it going amen the weight the way through it's it's um it's good to kind of figure out what you've done on on some missiles so that you can park it mark can you curl it a bit next shot next mark finish it yep yeah just listen to that keep going between glenn his third uh they uh glenn felt he had lots on that so yeah he felt he overthrew it just a bit hair tight lines your hair tight lines tight over curl trying it's actually real good boy braves guards are probably one of the hardest shots on this ice with so much finish that's a nice shot well it appears both teams are in it to score points this end glenn's got the center guard up on top of one and top of the twelve and brad is going in behind a corner guard top eight line's good straight real big straight you might have to go a little bit straight grip picked he picked up his broom [Applause] yeah you hate to see that that had pretty nice weight on it so howard lying it was perfect yeah it's okay fellas mine's good bro this is david's way this is looking so he's going to try and clear a few things up and open up that scoring area yeah girl close oh boy great shot really nice shot nice shot opens it right up of course when you throw a six-second rock things fly things move that's for sure team howard probably wants to put this one pretty tight to the house yep mine's good easy easy oh not in not in not in okay yeah they wanted that just a little bit shorter it gives you ability to hit and roll behind those corner guards now i got 15 seven on that hog to hog time so the ice normal the ice is coming uh is picking up to where it was uh this morning so it should be uh [Applause] good game the this ice with only one sweeper it glides quite nicely so sweeping straight sweeping's quite effective hard hard hard no roll sit yeah you'll notice that the skips will call either straight or curl and that just tells the sweeper which side of the rock to to sweep on and you can either hold it straight by one side or make it curl a little bit on the other side so you're always communicating that back and forth whoa whoa so you have to be on your toes when you're a sweeper be able to move one side to the other pretty quick go get a bit and while you're doing that you have to be telling to skip what the weight's like yeah exactly hate the draw [Music] do you hate the draw slip team howard do you like it too i think it's a chance to get yeah yeah top four weight hit and roll on back rolls let's just get one sunk [Applause] based on your throw what would you think brad's asked mark to come around those those staggered corners i know brad's intention at the beginning was to try and score two he sees an opportunity to use those two guards uh to potentially get two here mine's good yep room room room you got room room room line's good stay close for curl stay close for curl we'll boy mark good sweep guys nice yeah nicely managed uh ej just kind of kept a broom on it kept it clean couldn't really sweep no no you did the right thing [Applause] that closed for time six [Applause] howard wants to corner freeze this yes onto the red one [Music] very nice shot by scott you like that i don't know i don't know if i see you're gonna move it with three inches and move it so i only need like five more and ryan honestly i would wait until like i think you're gonna be like within about three inches of the rock so yeah liked that shot is if you'd had a fresh one it's gonna i just didn't know how how it looked from the hack i loved that call too i didn't want to have to play the double unless we had to because you missed that yeah at least with that if you hit three quarters and they just jiggle you're fine whatever i had you there [Applause] i don't think anything else is he trying to bury around the wrench yeah i think so i think this is the top one get it next time i know ceiling out he only has to corner bury this by about an inch and and uh it could be hard to get out right up here yeah pretty precise pretty precise take that in yeah you just don't want to tick and roll um you know even corner if it over curls a bit corner freezing one top bread isn't too bad yeah one good thing i can't know what we do for two i'm wondering if you can make the double song it's only halfway to the feet this way yeah i don't know if you can i don't think so looks really tough but i mean even if you just made the roll [Applause] well i'm just thinking if nose is probably okay but if you go nose and then knows we're not playing that double i don't think we are he doesn't make it then it's four yeah wait what about this [Music] it's not bad because that's jamming all day your center line he'd probably try to go play it thin and over the top and he makes that if we roll too far and he makes that end's over best way to keep this end alive is like is this yeah or this he's throwing the same shot i know yeah if and think about the same shot he's got to be dead perfect even if he's here it's it's a double for three but he doesn't have to be he can just be here he's going to make it on a dime it's got to be on a dime so we go here and he's playing the same shot anyways so if we were here huh right okay so just a hair okay i got half buried and i like it i got one more question if we do knows and he noses do we have the double we might uh no no we might be real good we gotta take it away pretty long it's okay the one that we throw in the back line back line back line like it like it it'll probably be hacked you know so they're trying to just uh tap this out roll into their cluster of reds there normally these teams are playing two o'clock uh in this event there are no clocks i thought that was good a brad to pick up the speed there and make a call but also a good uh a good shot to discuss because it is a big yeah it is a big shot it is yeah this is brad's first rock of the second end clean clean clean yep yep oh straight good try brad good throw yeah they were hoping it would clip that other blue one on the way by but uh it didn't but they got the nice little roll a little more i got it good shot that's good quite a bit just over perfect just over here just over curled yeah almost made the double it touched it well i mean you're never getting rid of it you got to take a little off this one it slid well didn't it so glenn's trying to get in there close to the t line just in front of that red that's on the t line a pretty good shot though same weight uh as lost and should be perfect yeah do you think he just doesn't want to set up a double yeah so as long as he's uh biting the four or close to the four fairly close to those red rocks it should take away any double weight looks pretty nice let's just uh get a little bit of curl no yes yes first it'll go first it'll go that's perfect that's real good yeah that is real good it'll be a shot for once yeah for two if anything that's really good well i was thinking maybe no i don't think so and then that goes out but he's going to make a great shot to do it yeah i took a good uh four five feet off him basically the same i just sort of had goods are perfect i'm gonna throw board weight hit it on the nose and score their one yeah yeah [Applause] it's tempting to try something there but it is a little bit dangerous yes it's early in the game yeah two puts a one up uh in the even ends you know that's it's not a bad spot to be in no some really nice um really nice shot making so far in this game [Applause] clean whoa clean [Music] [Applause] and right on schedule he just gives a nose leaning towards them but i don't know if it changes our shots i think we let them do the work well great telling you outside why why mess something up that might be good either way for us well what ends up happening is you probably run that lose one and there's one in the house got the dude he just comes around the corner yeah [Applause] this is a tough tour right now right he's real tough i think team howard has to assume that red shot unless they know for sure that blue is shot big time that's that's a great shot he's got to hit it because they're the ones that have to score that's too hard you could yeah you can that's a lot of you got options as long as you don't whip it how heavy [Music] okay these guys are banging over there [Applause] [Music] i guess it's not great if you're not so it looks like they're running the corner in to the pack yeah if you can get it right across the face of the blue one that's pretty good whoa he's got yup whoa whoa no it's got to curl got to curl a ton got a curl a ton no weight either wow that just didn't curl good throw scott yeah they just didn't get the finish they expected uh weight looked pretty good it does look like that but what are we doing here he's got that brew over there not the curl at all he doesn't really have anything here other than he can come and touch that and be for sure one he's got that yeah he's got that guard yeah i didn't expect to hit him what's he doing if we guard that running he's probably freezing trying to freeze there and then we guard again and then he's got to run one in to maybe get to the way to go right i don't want to think about it too long what he's doing like again i just didn't want him i thought he could do it why is that not curling yeah if he shot would he do that do we have any opportunity to maybe make this better for ourselves you could make a little bit of a split lady would just bump this to here hold it here and then even anything he does here it's it's our color but i don't know if i love that yeah oh dave's didn't i don't know if i love it also i was waiting for it waiting for it what's he got right now he's still got that still got that and then he's throwing he'll turn freeze right now and then you're having to guard so you're probably taking that right just guarding it or hit it yeah either one could friggin knows it that's what i was thinking just hit it yeah i like the thought process there yeah yeah the only one that was going to hurt him was that blue one and yeah you don't want to and you don't want to give them anything better like if you still hit and roll yeah i'd love to move it a quarter of an inch to make sure they're soft try to take so they're just trying to take away this angle run if you can get a little bit of a roll towards the center there that would uh cut off the draw for the exactly the button for the extra point too if there is an extra point there yeah nobody's really convinced who's shot yet i think that's why brad wants this role is kind of important yeah okay so i think that no i know i get it i get i'm trying i'm just trying to pay for you i take that max [Applause] a little less yeah go less i didn't i didn't do very much huh that didn't do very much it's like so blend's trying to freeze right into there i'd love to move it a quarter of an inch but let's forget obviously i want to roll off okay i'll give you that very precise as well yeah when he says a quarter of an inch that's what he means a quarter of an inch if he if he bumps it four or five inches it's probably going to roll open whoa whoa i got a little heavy glenn thinks he's a little bit heavy and the way it's reacting it looks that way too just running straight i don't know if you could hear mark in the back saying skate skate skate because he can't get up there and sweep that one because they were not a throwing team one of the new covenant rules for curling but i think he's got more of that attack i agree you can easily pick that out for one not easily but if you guard that i don't know where the juice is and if he goes for this one and he and he just feathers it then we might get it right right right i think you're guarding them i made it down pretty good i think you're guarding the pick [Applause] he's got a run back for two right now this way yeah right you've got that but if you throw this guard and you could you could take both away yeah you can i like that mark okay so that's where we want to be eh right here except well here's then he just hits this yeah but mark we can actually we can actually bury one here yeah like you could bury one here yeah i hear you so that they feel this is the only way they can get uh access to that red rock is through this side the out turn draw try to bury one top twelve yeah so they're just kind of coming in tight and a half wrap around that um the front guard there yeah to take away any straight back raise or or no there wouldn't be a straight back raise no well the run back would definitely um glenn could use it to make sure he's got the one right now we're still not sure who's shot back there that's right yeah so just uh bury this by an entry or a couple inches [Applause] we're gonna come right through here dude he's got like nothing of that blue so they're going to try this shot with a just well i don't know i wouldn't say a touch more weight probably similar weight yeah probably uh just less ice and try to make something with that blue if i had to bet i'd say them i'm trying to throw the exact same weight and if we ever hit the glue perfect it might be there for two but we just got to make sure we hit the blue yeah it appears both skips i think it's the other team's shot yeah i know brad jacob thinks it's glam and glenn thinks it's brad yeah only so that's gotta be close [Applause] the line's looking pretty close yeah if they can keep it out there long enough and just let it finish at the end oh i just touched it yeah well i guess now we'll figure out probably measuring how do you measure that i know i would make sure they get the the good stuff yeah they got the good measuring stick yeah if it just gets by that front red one they've got a really nice shot that probably would have been for two i don't know if it would have been there like you've had to move that and that's going i don't know probably definitely mark's going to get the measure stick a little club knowledge here uh you probably would have recommended the other stick down at this end i thought it was very guaranteed for something this closed i think it's a little more accurate well but there's no momentum like the red wouldn't have gone very far because he's hitting huh see if we can get an over top shot there we go i think i think the shooter would have rolled too far the red would have not gone very fast i forget who threw that rock but it's been there for quite a while louie howard i believe scored one we'll just wait for total confirmation here yeah another thing with uh coveted rules is um there's only one person putting up the score so the who it's usually whoever scores first in the game they have they will encouragement again to get the rocks out you know sometimes uh i know all the teams appreciate the front ends and how well they shoot but uh as a spectator i really enjoy watching how precise some of is up 6-1 on camlody and laycock is up 4-1 and that's against uh mike mcewen and that's after three ends they're just on the fourth end yep didn't have a whole lot of feature game jacobs versus howard and jacobs is up 2-1 after four ends mine's good again this is a an 18 team uh event we have three pools going so round robin plays good line pool the top 12 teams um overall advanced playoffs on sunday afternoon and we are live streaming all weekend long uh one game every draw next draw will be at six o'clock uh pacific standard time i hope that we can uh join us at that time as well we
