welcome to r/m malicious compliance where we share stories of people conforming to the letter but not the spirit of request and today we have four great stories so subscribe hit the like button and let's begin the first story new temp worker faces chaotic and disorganized shipping facility dealing with extra tasks in a closet with misplaced gas cards the Second Story call center worker faces a dilemma fake data for a survey or lose everything the consequences are expected the third story thriving company faces ruin after a new director enforces mandatory office days leading to mass resignations and productivity collapse the fourth story disastrous first day at a zoo kiosk turns into chaos as the overwhelmed workers lack of math skills leads to complaints and lost Revenue today's first story is I'm new here where do you want all these okay I'll try to make this short but so much went in during a short amount of time I had recently started working for a brown and yellow box shipping facility I ended up in a unique position as front-end clerk this was a temp job but if I did well I'd be hired on as full-time I met the two ladies let's call them Wanda and Cindy who ran the front and began to learn as much as I could for 2 weeks before Cindy the one who ran everything in the front went on Christmas vacation I was her replacement I did so terrible to start but after a week of being literally fed to the Wolves I began to catch on better Wanda did what she could for me me but I was in a way counterproductive at times because we did not get along and she knew about as much as I did just to give you an idea of the workload a typical day's work for my job is to separate all in-house packages from customer packages and to separate all customer packages from one another most packages or car parts or tractor parts all extremely heavy stuff I'm a 25-year-old 59 175b woman at the time that took time and effort among my duties is to fix broken packages rebok and relabel or just tape it until there's no Brown left handle losses there were way too many of these people on the Belt do not care if a packages marked fragile or Handle With Care and ship off lost packages to another brown and yellow box facility sometimes if they were behind on the Belt they would even throw me up there for an hour or two even if I was too far behind on my work it was by far the most chaotic and disorganized place I'd ever worked and the lack of communication was very much a big issue for this place now back to the in-house packages these always get put on a cart and hauled over to the customer services door I knock I speak with the people inside and have them sign my tablet well days pass and cart after cart after cart I'm running out of carts everyone is and none of these packages have been touched I speak with the manager of the morning shift about it and she said that it was my job to put these packages away so yet another job to take on okay I was told since I was new to only focus on the front counter duties and not the extra duties that have been tacked on to Cindy over the past 20 years I'm not sure what to do with all this stuff she shows me a closet and enters a passcode one I'm not supposed to know I would need to get her every time something needs to go inside this closet just sign for the packages yourself and put them in here as soon as you get them we need the carts when you're done this is where malicious compliance begins I nod feeling a bit ticked off at yet another thing to do and begin filling in the closet with all those boxes trying to keep some order to start but it was hard to do with such little space and time if it was in house it went straight to this room and it got full quick by the end of the week I had to start leaving a card in front of the closet because there was no room left inside eventually they took my cart and left the boxes on the floor which I got yelled at as a safety violation so I throw the boxes up over the piles in the closet just to get them out of the way later in the weeks to come there's a big problem the gas cards for their drivers were missing it was literally the week of Christmas and everyone was losing their minds the drivers were nearly 2 hours late already I overheard the manager flipp their sh saying this was the worst thing to possibly happen and that it was the first time in 30 years it's happened so hey guess where those gas cards ended up being in that stupid closet because everyone was too busy to check the loads I dropped off and just telling someone new to put it somewhere like I would even know what was important needless to say they didn't hire me back and I was glad to leave edit well apparently some of the stuff is for individual people all of whom I wouldn't be able to recognize because of the fact I was new which is why I had left it where Cindy told me to when cdy got back she apologized for them saying things just get hectic around Christmas and more fall on to the clerks because they're considered the laid-back lazy job compared to everyone else which is horse sh we do just as much if not more everyone else Works in a team of at least five where Cindy and Wanda both work alone 95% of the year I felt bad for her because I just started getting things right and was to make an excellent replacement for her retirement they had me train my replacement which I wasn't told this but I wasn't dumb nor blind and she quit a month after I left because the work was too hard and they refused to put her back on the Belt the second story is want me to create fake data for your client sure thing so about 20 years ago I worked in a call centercustomer feedback company they did mystery shops and gave out customer surveys when trying out new products for clients one such survey was a Countrywide Burger Joint changed the way they cook their fries different potatoes cooking oil and cuts I wrote the software for this survey but I made a mistake in one of the questions the questions was would you buy this product again and unfortunately due to my mistake always was true when I was making reports for the data it is when I noticed that I had made a mistake I went to the boss and told her what happened she said oh just fake the data but make sure that it's still overwhelmingly true overall I said no I wasn't going to fake data I told them to just tell the client that one question was an error and we don't have usable data for for it but the rest of the survey was good I even told them to tell the client it was my fault it was after all and we would be good she said to come with her and made me sit in her truck as she pulled out a stinky cigarette you just got married and bought a new house it would be a real shame if something happened and you lost everything so as I said go and fake the data so at this point in my career I was terrified of this threat I did what I was told I faked the data every rating of the product from 1 to five that got a five or four said they would never buy the product again any ones or twos disliked the product were given a true for willing to buy the product again the rest were all random they took the data made their graphs and sent it to the client they were Furious none of the data made sense boss comes at me angry I just did what I was told was what I told her she got even more angry and suddenly after that no one in the company would talk to me and said to fix it so I did made up even more data that didn't make any sense they submitted it back to the company and lo and behold they were even more Furious they ended up losing that client the client continued making the new french fries that everyone hated average rating out of five was 1.2 or 1.3 if I remember correctly I found another job and quit not one person talked to me other than do this or do that after this incident apparently co-workers were told if they said anything to me or gave me a going away party they would be fired the owner and management were horrible people eventually the company went bankrupt and was constantly in court for nonpayment to employees edit this was my first job after changing careers and I was worried if I lost the job I would lose my house Etc I know her threats were more serious than that but I clearly wasn't thinking as clear as I should have been however me being so petty paid off in my books if they were honest nothing bad would have happened the next story is mandatory office days ruined my company just like most companies my company was forced to go completely remote as the byproduct of the pandemic it was an easy transition as we already worked predominantly online anyways just in an office setting we run meetings and collaborate with stakeholders Countrywide needless to say we Thrive during the past 3 years with productivity in an all-time high and turnover rate at an alltime low colleagues were encouraged to take frequent breaks and not to worry about school runs or medical appointments as long as it doesn't block work or results in projects not being finished we started to win industry awards for this and everyone was extremely satisfied you were asked to go to the office for collaboration purposes if it was needed but they pretty much left it to you to decide this was until our smallish Tech firm hired a new director who decided to enforce a mandatory 3 days in the office now these past 3 years we closed two of our four offices in the UK most people moved out of cities and bought houses sent their kids to school in a new town and took on volunteering roles in their communities second cars were sold and people took on more caring responsibilities as they worked from home most days anyways as you'd expect people were extremely angry over this voicing their concerns I'll preface this saying we did better work from home and they admitted it too there was no business reason to do this this decision resulted in competitors moving in and taking away key players we lost our apprentices as they were located across the UK people started to quit left and right as things got quieter people decided to maliciously comply our remaining offices got overwhelmed with traffic people could not find a desk to work so immed got delayed people refused to work over their contracted hours or take on extra responsibilities our productivity plummeted and we had to resort to hiring expensive Consultants to help internal satisfaction surveys were so bad they refused to publish the results this happened in January I just handed in my notice after 27 years and we'll be joining our competitor in 2 weeks I thought I'll retire from here needless to say an emergency meeting was called between the senior leadership and they tried to fix things but the damage is so bad that they had to hire an external company to save them from bankruptcy edit did you inform them that after 27 years you're leaving because the new guy effed everything up absolutely I was one of six mid-level team leaders four of us handed in a joint resignation citing company policies I'm also going to attend my exit interview and state the same edit two re unionized and this gentleman new director has vast experience in redundancies we know they only did this to make a few people quit before redundancies would kick in in they didn't consider that people would leave on mass we lost key colleagues with industrial expertise to our major competitors I would start looking for a new job too if I were him the fourth story is you'll do what I tell you to do anyway I've had some sh jobs but this one was the worst it was at a popular and very busy zoo and it was the summer holidays and an extremely hot day anyway I go in no real introduction this guy has three of us in three positions to fill he tells us he has two positions in the kitchen washing dishes which I understood was the job I was applying for and one in the kiosk selling ice creams he then asks us if we have any preference and I tell him I'm not very good with mental arithmetic and money for some reason he gets mad and says you'll do whatever I tell you to do and puts me in the kiosk anyway this was like a tiny Shack with a couple of freezers a list of prices on the wall for different ice creams and Ice lollies all have annoyingly similar names like calipo and Calypso and flavors are priced differently and if in calcul yep no till register just a money box and a calculator that to this day I'm sure was malfunctioning and I'm here on my own on my first day did I mention it was a crazy hot day anyway the queue starts to build up and being socially awkward I get very nervous if you can imagine a festival of choosing Beggars and entitled parents this wouldn't be far off there's not really anywhere to put the ice creams except onto the counter as they ask for them at which point the kids grab them and run off and the parents claim they never had one meanwhile I'm trying desperately to find the prices on the board punching them into this sh old calculator then it comes up with something like 18 I'm like right is that 18b or 180 everyone is moaning and telling me to hurry up start again 16 this time just start making up prices or trying to do the math in my head again I'm not exactly an arithmetic seant effing hours later this girl casually strolls up to relieve me I couldn't have left any earlier because I don't have keys to lock it up if I recall correctly I had a radio and I tried to call them to tell told him I was having trouble all I get back is shut up and get on with it anyway in the afternoon I was working in the kitchen pretty easy job just empty plates and put them into this industrial dishwasher then at the other end if there's any water left dry it off and stack them up to go out again I go home pretty much determined to never go back later on my cousin's boyfriend who's a massive tea calls me up to be fair to him he got me the job as then it was through him I found out they had jobs going but I doubt if I needed him to vouch for me like it's joining a board of Executives or something it's an sh minimum wage job with no qualifications needed and there wasn't even an interview actually I thought I was going for an interview then got told I was starting straight away anyway this loudmouth D is telling me he's getting Flack at work I tell him to give them my number and take it up with me since it's not his problem but I think he just wants to shout at me anyway here's the kicker and it still makes me smile in an effed up kind of way apparently I lost him an sh ton of money and got a load of complaints well I did tell them I wasn't any good with money smirk I hope you enjoy these stories
