hello guys it's me jamie and welcome back to another video so today i'm just going to be doing my august wrap up and just do a quick brief overview of all the books that i read in august i know it's a bit late i know that we're like nearly halfway through september i just haven't had time to like film stuff because i've been really busy with work and stuff and really getting back into the swing of things but now i think i have found like a good routine for me that works and works with like booktube and stuff like that so here i am doing my august wrap up so i read six books in august which i know for some people on booktube is like nothing that's like what they read in a week but for me i thought was pretty good because i just haven't been in a reading mood much at all this year so i'm pretty happy that i managed to read six books i also spent the majority of august going through a breakup as well so i definitely like spent a lot of time being sad but also it was good because i got to escape into some like other worlds and stuff so yeah although i do feel like my breakup did kind of impact the way i like felt about some of these books i don't know we'll get into it but let's just get started so the first book i read in august was normal people by sally rooney this book took me forever to finish because i was literally in the middle of this when i broke up with my boyfriend so after that happened for like the full week or two weeks afterwards i was just like i'm not touching this book i no thank you i do not want to read about this like really depressing relationship but no i did end up finishing it and i really really enjoyed it so basically we follow two characters marianne and connell they live in ireland we meet them in the formative years of their life so we meet them when they're in high school they have a pretty sexual relationship but the social dynamic is kind of weird and then we just follow them over the years while they're in college and while they're just kind of experiencing living their lives as a young adult i definitely think that this is more of a character study than a very plot heavy book not a lot happens but the characters develop so much and we learn so much about them and they definitely really change each other for example in the beginning marianne's really weird no one really wants anything to do with her at school everyone thinks she's really strange connell likes her obviously but when they're at school he literally pretends not to know her and then the roles are kind of reverse at university where marianne is kind of the cool one she's got this huge group of friends whereas connell is super introverted and finds it difficult to get along with people it's really really heartbreaking and it has such a melancholic vibe to it i really loved getting to know these characters but some parts were definitely really really hard to read especially a lot of marion's moments and marion's issues i guess with like self-esteem and like self-respect and all that sort of stuff she goes through some really horrible she goes through some trauma it sucks and then yeah connor's a bit of a mess as well i just really liked these super imperfect characters it was just heartbreaking this book is like the epitome of right person wrong time i yeah i just really loved it although i do think in terms of sally rooney's other book i really did prefer conversations with friends i ended up writing this one four stars because i did really enjoy it but it just didn't for me packed the same punch that conversations with friends did conversations with friends was like messier and had like a bit more drama whereas this was kind of just like sad and yeah but still really fun definitely recommend it if you're getting into adult fiction for the first time i think it's really good and like just really well written well-rounded characters so yeah next i picked up take a hint danny brown by talia hibbert i was just really in the mood for something really really light fast fluffy something really fun to read this is also the companion novel to get a life chloe brown which i really really loved so this is a romance between two friends danny who is a university lecturer i think or she's doing her phd but she does work at the university as well and sophia who is a security guard at the university they are really really good friends but zafia has kind of struggled with anxiety a lot ever since his dad and brother i believe passed away in a car crash and he was also an ex-rugby player and once that all happened his anxiety started playing up he dropped out and then he started up this company which like helps younger people with playing rugby i think honestly like all this was a bit of a blur for me so i don't remember hates but that's kind of like the gist of it anyway a video goes viral of zeph carrying danny out of an elevator when there has been like a false fire alarm and it goes viral and everyone's like oh my god isn't that that ex-rugby player this couple is so bloody cute so they decide to start faking a relationship in order to get more publicity for zaf's company and the motive for danny is that she really wants a buddy because she doesn't do relationships so she sees the deaf as like the perfect buddy because they're friends and he's like hot i don't know i rated this 4 out of 5 stars i really did enjoy it and it really was the book that i needed at that time it was super fast and talia hibbett has such an excellent way of like creating these really really realistic and believable characters it did kind of disappoint me in terms of the fact that i loved your life chloe brown i felt like the motives between the relationship for this one was slightly less developed and i also kind of i just think i prefer enemies to lovers more than friends to lovers also it this did have kind of the downfall of the fact that it happened and get a left claude brown as well whereas like the third act for some reason the couple just like doesn't work like they go through some really random obstacle that literally just doesn't need to happen and it ends up dragging the book on a whole lot more and i didn't mind it so much and get a live chloe brown but because it happened again and taken danny brown i got slightly more annoyed and i just know that talia hibbert is a better writer than that i just think it's a trope that doesn't need to happen the couple just doesn't need to break up like they already go through so many obstacles in the main like meat of the story they don't really need to have a second sort of breakup thing i don't know it's just something that bothers me but yeah i definitely cannot wait for the next installment in the brown sisters because i believe there's going to be a book about eve brown which i'm really excited for and i did definitely really like this it's just hard because i'm comparing it to your life color brown which i liked a lot more also again maybe i was just feeling cynical about relationships but yeah it's still a really good book if you're new to the romance genre but i would definitely just start with get a life chloe brown the next book i read in august was six of crows by leigh bardugo and then right afterwards i read crooked kingdom also by leigh bardugo i actually did a full reading vlog for both these books so you can go and watch that if you'd rather get like a more in-depth view of my thoughts but i will talk about them here briefly so six of crows is and quicker kingdom is a fantasy duology about this group of criminals who are put together to commit like a prison heist i love six of crows i ended up writing this five out of five stars this was also a reread for me and the first time i read it i read it for but then since i read that i read the entire grisha trilogy first and then i read this um which i hadn't done before and i feel like that really did impact my enjoyment because i had a lot more knowledge of the world and also i kind of think the grisha trilogy sucks so this in comparison to the grocery trilogy i was like yeah actually this is like the blueprint for like a perfect yeah fantasy honestly it's so much fun i loved loved loved the characters so much more obviously and i just think it's such a well-written book they're so funny all the characters and the interactions together are so great i did go in my vlog on this huge matthias rant because i feel like he gets so much unnecessary hate and i personally love him as a character i also think in terms of like character development and like story structure and plot points this is probably like the most perfectly crafted fantasy book in terms of that sort of stuff like you have the perfect amount of character backstory and like character development in terms of like exciting like action-filled plot scenes does that make sense i don't really know but like yeah i just thought it was incredible kaz breaker really shone for me in this reread as well whereas last time i read it i like didn't really care for him i thought he was kind of pretentious but i really loved him and i just i'm so glad that i enjoyed this book so much more and i definitely recommend checking out my vlog if you want to know more about my thoughts crooked kingdom however was kind of a disappointment i actually ended up writing it three out of five stars i just feel like it did not live up to the first book i thought it was so unnecessarily convoluted like the plot points just really didn't link up it was also really boring like compared to the first one there were some moments that were really exciting but the majority of it i found to be quite i found myself to be quite bored i think every scene with a niche was the most interesting i thought anisha's chapters were the most interesting which is different because in the first book i found nina imitations um chapters to be the most interesting i also feel like it's a shame because i feel like leigh bardugo has not developed and fully fleshed out wylan and jesper as individual characters so because we got so much of their individual backstories in this book i just didn't care as much because they weren't as fully fleshed out in the first book however i would change nothing about the first book so i think honestly as much as i hate to say it i honestly think they should have just kind of stayed as side characters and we should have really kind of highlighted energy kaz nina imitates a lot more in this book which does suck but i just do think it's something that leigh bardugo kind of should have worked on in this book i just don't i just do not think wiley and jesper were developed enough and that led to me finding their backstories really really boring which is a shame because i love them so much for like what they provide in the first book i also feel like there was this really weird scene with nina amitayus like in the village and there were these weird kind of like mechanical things people that just never showed up ever again so i was like i don't really know what that was about also this book just did not need to be more than 500 pages long it just dragged on so much i feel like i'm saying like such shitty things about it like i did really enjoy like anish's story line and like there was so many beautiful cats and ninja moments so many beautiful nina moments i did like enjoy it and i did enjoy like my time reading it i just found it to be so much more of a disappointment than the first one and i know that's a controversial statement because for some reason people love crooked kingdom so much like they literally have a hard time choosing between this book and the first one so i'm like sorry if you see something that i haven't seen i just can't i just don't understand like why people love this one like more than the first one also i did know like the spoiler like the huge spoiler that might have also impacted my enjoyment but i don't think so because i don't really think if a book's good then knowing the spoiler shouldn't really like impact how you enjoy it like if a book entirely relies on like its plot twist or it's like spoiler then it's not very well written but yeah i'm kind of rambling now but yeah three out of five stars i'm still i'm not sure about reading king of scars based on what i've said about like these two books let me know if you think i should pick up king of scars because i do love nikolai and i love nina as individual characters but like i love nina and matteos as individual characters and i didn't enjoy their storylines in like crooked kingdoms so who knows the next book i read in august was i believe in a thing called love by maureen goo this is a why a romance contemporary it's about a girl called desi who has never been in a relationship never been in love one weekend she watches heaps okay dramas with her dad and decides that she is going to follow the steps in a k drama to get a boyfriend because there's this new guy at school that she's like thinks is really cute has a crush on him and she's like i'm gonna win him over using these like kdrama formulas honestly like the book was really really fun i just found it to be like kind of juvenile for me i guess like i think i'm just probably too old for it i personally love watching kdramas so like i was really excited for that element of it and it was kind of funny and like the concept was like fun and cute i don't know i guess like the teenage drama i'm a little bit too old for also like the male love interest kind of really started to piss me off like there's this entire scene where dizzy our main character she is feeling really sick and she's like hey like i'm so sorry can we not hang out tonight like i'm just really feeling unwell blah blah all that stuff and then he's like okay like do you want me to come over and like i can look after you and she says no no it's okay like i just really need to be by myself and then he shows up anyway with like all this stuff and like if it was me personally i'd be like so off but then also like disney isn't going like i realized in that moment that i could be myself around him and i was like i would babes like i would be so pissed off if like someone showed up to my house after i specifically said don't come to my house i wouldn't be like oh that's so romantic i'd be like oh you are creepy i don't know like at the same time it's like a why a contemporary romance like it's really not that deep it is supposed to be just like fun but yeah a lot of reviews on goodreads like say that the main character kind of sucks because she's super manipulative i feel like she's not honestly as bad as everyone on goodreads says she is and we have to acknowledge the fact that she is like a teenage girl who is like making her own mistakes and i found the male main character to be far more annoying and i don't know i just feel like people obviously just have something against like teenage girls but yeah i don't know i just like was fun but i'm probably never ever going to read it again i do want to read maureen gould's like k-pop y.a book that she's written but yeah this one i probably won't ever touch again but it was so fun just two out of five stars not much else to say about it oh actually although there was just like some weird stuff happening like in one scene like she's like talking to the cute guy and then her like pants randomly fall down and then it's like oh my god i was so embarrassing like i'm like my pants fell down and i'm just like how did they fall down like we're just not wearing a belt like are we just gonna ignore like the laws of physics like her pants have been staying up all day beforehand and i'm like are we just gonna like ignore the laws of physics so this main character can have an embarrassing plot point it was so weird it was so weird but it was still fun like i don't know there was nothing offensive about it i just like i just didn't find it that interesting anyway yeah um i believe i think would love two out of five stars and then the final book i read in august was night film by marisha pessl this is a 600 page crime mystery thriller about this really famous cult movie director he is like so creepy like no one has ever really seen him there's heaps of like weird conspiracy theory rumors about him and his family anyway his daughter dies at like 24 and it's ruled a suicide but a journalist who had been caught up in this film director's like business before does not think that's the case so he decides to investigate further and see if it was actually a suicide or if the family tried to cover something up he ends up like putting together this like ragtag bunch of like people to help him so this drug dealer who was like in love with this girl and then this like wannabe actress who crossed paths with this girl at one stage and they end up trying to like investigate and going on this huge mission it's really fun i rated it three out of five stars just because it was really really long and really dragged on at some points and some points were really boring but then some points were so exciting what i really liked about this book is that you thought it was going one direction but then all of a sudden it's like all about witchcraft and the occult and that element of the book i really really enjoyed i loved that it kind of like it was kind of set in reality but at the same time there was all this other stuff going on like there's this whole scene with like him and the two people he's with go to this like witchcraft shop and sit down with this really old witch and she tells them about all this like black magic that they've stumbled across and what they've found and i found that sort of stuff to be so much more interesting i don't know i really wish the book had kind of like kept going further down that avenue and really i don't know i just i just felt like i just really wish the book explored that more as opposed to like what actually happened in the end which i'm not gonna say because spoilers but yeah it's also like mixed media so there's like pages in here from like websites and stuff and like newspaper articles and stuff like that some like forms which i also really liked i love that sort of thing but yeah i also thought the main character was like kind of boring there were parts about this book i loved parts that i didn't i do recommend it if you are into like horror movies conspiracy theories the occult and like really long-winded thrillers they have a lot of mystery about them but i also feel like this book definitely isn't for everyone like i feel like some people probably won't get it or they'll just find it really really boring but i definitely do enjoy it and i definitely suggest like i definitely recommend it it's probably just not something that i would prioritize if it is on your tbr but it is still really fun like to read while you're reading other stuff as well i honestly don't have much else to say about it i feel like i read it i read it over like the span of three weeks while reading other stuff but just because like i had to kind of read it in like one go oh and at the beginning also it was really really scary so i couldn't read it at night as well because i'm a child but yeah three out of five stars really fun honestly if you know a book that has like the vibes of this one like the occult sort of stuff please let me know because i genuinely loved it so much and it was more about that it would be a 5 out of 5 star book but yeah please recommend if you know of any other books like that so those are all the books that i read in august sorry i know this wrap up is kind of weird i haven't done a wrap up in a long time and honestly this month has been such a weird headspace but i'm so glad to get back into reading for september hopefully my september wrap-up will be a little bit more coherent but yeah so again thank you so much for watching let me know what you read in august and hopefully i will see you in another video very soon bye but she said cindy don't cry and i don't wanna lie you're better off without me don't cry nobody
