Bobby Bowden 90th birthday celebration at Tallahassee QB Club - Pt. V

I first hear that coach basketball first but basketball and I didn't we didn't do too good I don't think lemon Levin is that bad myself we lost left on the road lost Lebanon home he shot fired me and I investigated so the other member gets played at Florida State University but anyway so anyway what in the world was like when Paul I don't say everywhere I coached he was a small college because after I went to South Georgia College then I became a head coach at Samford University which was what 2,000 students you know small school and then I got to talking I'd I applied for a couple of big-time jobs and couldn't get the couldn't get anywhere so and I kind of felt like we need to get into a bigger school we need to get into one a school you know and so well we'll do that now in in 1962 we have a real good year up there at Sanford I was Sanford they had the Atlanta quarterback club like you've got to tell the head quarterback now back then the line of Quarterback Club was one of the most prestigious clubs in the country one of the biggest and most prestigious you know and so Quarterback Club at the end of the year just like this they'd have their final banquet they're bringing a great speaker you know and then they would invite all the head football coaches in the south you know the major college coach did not small college coaches you know so they had about 17 18 big coaches up there listing they didn't invite small college coaches but guess who gets invited the question is why would they invite you I thought you said there wasn't and the reason was the president of the Atlanta touchdown club went to my school and he wanted his coach there and he got permission for me to go so I go in Atlanta at the quarterback Club and I'm we're sitting at a table just like this they made us a red table behind that's where the speaker said with obvious head coaches coach al Alabama coach to Auburn coach from Georgia Georgia Tech from Florida Miami Mississippi at Mississippi State Tennessee from Texas man all those big-time coaches and me come in here you know but here's where faith plays a role yes they set me next [Music] she was the head coach where Florida State I've never met bill Peter said that knowing and didn't know much about Florida State yeah and so I'm sitting by coach Peterson and we get to talking and he says they look at I'm looking for Coach I lost an assistant coach would you be interested in coming to Florida State I said well I might he said we'll come down for business so that meant this Tallahassee got interviewed and they hired me as assistant coach no title whatsoever I had my head coach all my life and I don't take a system job that you at Florida State University yeah I would state three years that's a system you know then I went to West Virginia as an assistant became the head football coach at Florida State called me back you know what to be the head coach at Florida State but I thought that'd be it kind of instant if you wonder how I ever ran into Florida State University it's because if my that the person or the club hadn't have gone to Florida hot Sanford I never got invited look then I might have never met be a peach then I might never come to flunk State but hey God works pretty good no there's one thing about life when you get my age I remember I heard Billy Graham say this one time when you get my age you can look back and see exactly how it was put together you know it's a lot easier to look back it is forward you know when I was young I didn't know what else I didn't know where I was going you know but jobs just kept you know I got six jobs and in 40 in 57 years I had six different jobs you know I didn't apply for one of them they call me you know coach would you be interested yes I'd be interested we'll come on down for an interview and they gave me the job but I never applied you know it but what I'm saying you can look back as you get older like me you look back and see exactly how your life was put together you know [Music] pajota clock y'all talk long time they do just occur one thing I usually mention when I speak this is football and baseball and basketball and do they have a value to at the university does the university really need them just and just think about this the university really need football you know Bernie slider who is the president when I came here he and I used to go all over the state of Florida with Charlie me and Charlie slider and and we did all these different towns and slag who would speak I'd speak slag would speak Charlie would they don't do so everybody and but slyger made this statement he was talking about the value of football the first year I came to Florida State they did they went they'd won three games in four years three games in four years when I lived one time you know and so so I come in and I'm coaching my first year I have a losing year we were five and six you know and so we couldn't fill our enrollment we couldn't fit all of our dorms if we had space for 2,500 feet when we'd be lucky if we got to you know we couldn't come fill the dorms you know now take that and so what dr. swagger said talking to our alumni now take that four years later we're undefeated we play on national television about three times we play in our first major bowl game you know and here and you know what you know what happened I enrollment then next year if we were if we had 2,500 openings we had over 5,000 applicants now that's the advantage of that pick out the best Stiglitz picked out the best ears diego's you know that's how I value baseball basketball and football another name and the girls force can become to a university turn I can't believe I'm turning that gum Maddie hey no don't tell me to quick after I've got three days I got my babes the thank you very much and God bless all over there's a treat to be here for Bobby Bowden's one and only 90th birthday party Thank You officer B we all want
