BMW i3 Big Screen Upgrade - Installing & Coding 10.25" Display DIY

hey guys and welcome back to the simple kai guy channel unless your bmw i3 came with the technology package you will have one of these small displays which obviously doesn't look very modern and doesn't suit this car in my opinion so in this video i will show you how to upgrade to the 10 and a quarter inch display on your pre lci bmw i3 this shouldn't take more than 15 minutes and give this car a new look let's get to it all right so of course the first step in replacing the screen is to remove the screen and to do so we have to remove these two covers and then remove the t20 screws that are in there so let's do that should be easy enough and this one i have to use a hook because i have removed these before and they're kind of hard to get in there but it comes off not too bad you you can probably get away with just using one of these though and of course the next step is just to use the t20 to remove the two screws all right with both screws removed we can lift off the screen just like that all right and now we have to unplug the the video cable i'm going to press the little button in here and actually i will use my my pry tool here to help me out these cables are slightly notorious for being difficult to remove but it's not too bad just have to kind of i like the sharp edge of this so i can put it in between and pry it off gently there it is all right so that's removed now i'm gonna grab my new one get it out of the plastic of course oh look i mean look at the difference it's huge the difference is huge i love it okay now we're gonna plug it in okay that's plugged in the wires are out of the way now we can just pop that back on look at that that fits perfectly wow i'm excited about this now i'm just gonna try to actually see what i'm doing so i can put the screws back in and then the second one perfect both of the screws are in i'm just going to pop the little cover on in there as well and the second one all right so the physical installation is now done now what happens if you turn it on let's try it so as you can see without programming the unit it just does not work so let's get it programmed and ready to go all right guys now it's time to program it and of course i'm going to use my thank tool mini of course there are more popular devices to do this but why would i buy something specific for this job if i have a tool that will already do it so yeah i'm just going to use this because well i already have it you can use any tool you like but the steps should be fairly similar we're going to do automatically search let it find the car that's correct perfect so i'm going to go to coding and program and then i'm going to go to personalizations because that's where you can actually make the changes next okay now we're gonna find the right module which should be the cic and we're gonna go function select yes let's back it up once within the module we're just gonna look for the screen display mode and we're gonna switch from a small screen into a large one so we're going to go from smallest i can't read german to this one the second one click ok it's going to verify the data see if we can show this live okay recording has been complete we're going to click ok turn the car off and then turn it back on hey it works hey we just went from this little screen to that one and we didn't have to buy any additional tools sweet and remember guys if you have mmi prime install the new vehicle you will have to adjust the switches or the dip switches on here here are the settings so basically we have to put this third one up as well there it is okay i'm gonna try to turn the car on and see if that worked hey look at that now it's proper resolution so when i coded it through the car it allowed the display to be turned on but the resolution wasn't correct and now hey that looks perfect nice oh that looks so good look at that i love it well this is the final result and i'm very very happy with how it turned out this is one of the easiest mods on this card that i've done but it doesn't come cheap the screen is about 500 on aliexpress and much more if you buy it from a dealer or if you can find it used the one i got was brand new and it works flawlessly though of course you can use beamer code or other tools to enable the bigger screen which i have included instructions for at the end of this video with the addition of the carbon fiber wrapped panels i did in the previous video this interior is turning out better than i hoped for and starting to feel modern and upscale as this car truly deserves a couple of questions i wanted to answer for those wondering this mod only works on the pre-lci bmw i3 as far as i understand since the screens aren't available for 2018 real model or newer to find the screen like i have in this video check the description box i'll try to keep an updated link with where you can purchase yours and there will also be a part number to search for in case the link doesn't work anymore now let's go through the process of enabling the bigger screen using your beamer code app it's actually even easier than on my think tool mini first open the app and connect the obd2 adapter that's already plugged into your obd2 port on the car select your vehicle and let the app scan it for all control modules once the control unit list is populated go to head unit it will take a few seconds for it to load all of the options and then once it's loaded click on export mode in the bottom left corner click continue to accept the warning and then go to the first option hmi pull the screen down to get the search bar and type in display and then select display size resolution the correct resolution for the 10 and a quarter inch display will be 1280 by 480 pixels select it and then go back to the head unit menu again and then go to ex box once again search for display and click on display variant second option is the one you're looking for so make sure it is selected and then go all the way back to the head unit menu and click on code at the top right corner it will take about a minute to complete and restart the module after that you're done well guys that's about it for
