Blender Tutorial - Hair cards using the new Hair System and the Hair Tool

[Music] hi everyone in this tutorial I will show you my approach to making hair cards in blender using the new hair system with geometry nodes and the add-on hair tool here you can see the final result of the hair we will be creating so let's get started the first step is to gather references for the hair style we to recreate in this case I'm using an image from a character I created in Dragon Dogma 2 where you can see the spiky hairstyle similar to the characters from Akira Toriyama in Dragon Ball once we have a clear idea of the hairstyle we want to recreate I enter in edit mode and select the faces from the head to create a scalp flesh we will use it as a source to populate our hair with a new system next step is to make sure our scalp mesh has UVS that's one of the requirements for the new hair system to work now we are ready to start I select the scalp mesh and press shift a then from the menu curve and then empty hair that creates a new hair system attached to our scalp mesh having the hair system selected I enter in sculp mode I make sure I enable symmetry mode by pressing on the x-axis and then I select the add hair tool I'll be using the hair as guide so I make sure the count is one and I start to the hair on the scalp those are probably too long so I will undo them and adjust the length of the hair strands I'm adding more points so the hair has more resolution which is useful especially for longer hair then I start adding guides in a way that there is not too much of a gap between strands and they are equally distributed I change the hair length according to the location for example shorter hair for the size of the head when I'm happy with the location and distribution of the guides I select the comb tool and start combing the hair following the reference in this stage I'm looking for volume and flow this is the first pass we will be adding more detail on personality [Music] later once we are happy with the volume and flow I start adding more detail the first thing is adding more density for that I use the note interpolation which creates hair strands following our guide barents the first setting is surface we need to select our scalp and then adjust the density to add more hair I want I want to mask where the interpolated hair grows so for that I first draw the hairline with The annotation tool this way I have a reference for when I do the weight painting which will be used as a mask then I enter in weight paint mode and create a vertx group called density that's used for the mask and now I'm ready to paint once the mask is done I go back to the modifier and change the density Mas to our mask now I will be adding more detail to do that I use different notes such as clamp I toggle the interpolation note on and off uh so the viewport is more performant another note I like to use is the freeze note which makes the hair look a little bit more rough and lastly the noise note which adds more variation and makes the hair look more natural you can play with the different nodes and settings to achieve the hair style that you want here I went back to the sculp mode to adjust some of the volume and flow using the select and come to once I'm happy with the hairstyle I open the settings for the hair tool Adon that will convert our hair curves to hair cards the first step is to create a new hair system and a strin generator then disable the interpolation Noe that's important because otherwise we won't be able to use the UV tools from the hair tool and I use the UV tools from hair tool to usually map our hair and add the texture variation next step is to click on remove parents so so all the hair now is controlled by the hair tool adjust the width of the hair cards and then I add more density for the new system and toggle on off the line to surface option to check the cards then I will add our maskk to the new system and I change the viewport to see the hair textures now that we have selected the UV regions distribute we can change the hair textures and see what works better this is in my opinion the best tool from Theon now I will recreate the hairstyle done with the notes using the hair tool the first theformer will be for the clumps [Music] and then I will add the radius at theformer to make the hair thicker in the roots and thinner at the tips and I think the result is pretty good lastly I'm adding the smooth strand deformer which makes the cures smoother and the hair nicer once I have my system ready I create a new system following the exact previous steps to add more detail in the [Music] hairline the last step is to convert the hair Cards into oal meses I press contrl shift H and select finalize hair now we can use our hair anywhere else for example in real engine I know that wasn't a step by step or beginner tutorial but I hope it gives you an overview of the workflow that you can adjust for your needs please let me know if you have any questions and if you
