[Music] cause there's a grace to be has got to change [Music] well good day my friends your old pal jordan the lion how are you all doing today great as you can see behind me we are in florida you know it's so cool that you know the beginning of february i had no idea when i went to the winter dance party in iowa that i would end up getting to talk to gunner nelson and he would agree to do that interview that you guys saw in the last video i told him at the time i was like wherever you guys are you know whenever it's convenient i'll come and do it and so when it became florida how cool is it that i got to meet up with my friend adam who i hadn't seen him in a long time so i got to do two things while we were here but we got to take off because in a couple of days we're going to be meeting up with another couple of my friends in pennsylvania so today we're leaving florida hoping to end in south carolina dropping off jaw at home my friends that normally watch him miss him so much they want him back they're like please we're going crazy without jaw so jaws gonna hang out with them for this next part of our trip and yeah we'll eventually end up in pennsylvania so days with jordan the lion it begins right now one thing i absolutely love about being in florida is it still feels like old roadside america when you're driving around you can still find things off to the side of the road that have like a kitschy feel this place they have baby alligators let's go in and take a look they call me crazy i'm a fan of tchotchkes like these and i really love oranges oh lots of cool wind chime all the usual oddities of hot sauces and jellies and everything but also baby gators here's our baby gators a couple of them in there and if you want to decorate your home with one you can do that too all right we're going to hit the road i want to stop in jacksonville on our way north i'm really excited to do today's vlog too because i've wanted to stop and do this one just about every time i've went through georgia or northern florida and i just keep not having time to do it my mom got me into this band when i first started learning guitar she actually went out and said you know what if you're going to play guitar you have to listen to this and it was the whipping post keep seeing these billboards for this famous orange shop up here i might stop off and check that out all right let's check this one out this is kind of a famous one that you see on roadside america documentaries and things like that here you can get the little gift packs of different kinds of oranges and a little bit of candy with it or if you want to grow your own did they give you a free sample i think i'm going to buy a little bit of something to snack on here did you get your honey bells your temples and juices your honey mercotts and your valencias excellent thank you absolutely it is unbelievable oh that's cool they should have always had these i've always wondered why you couldn't find something like this this you just jam it into the orange and you can drink the orange pretty cool chocolate gators and gummy gators praline coated pecans i but those are great and great t-shirts that orange juice was so good i had to buy a couple and drink one now oh amazing jacksville's got a lot of crazy rock and roll history everything from heartbreak hotel being written there to leonard skynyrd band like i mentioned i said the whipping post so we're going to the house the official birthplace of the allman brothers band not the allman brothers the guys but the actual band this is where the band was birthed burger barn seems appropriate now that we're in jacksonville it's raining i don't know why but it seems appropriate here we are riverside avenue start of a storm coming well here we are this is the house it says on march 23rd 1969 an interracial group of southern musicians held a jam session in the front room of this house known as the grey house the jam went so well that veteran muscle shoal session guitarist wayne allman barred the door and announced that anyone not willing to be in this band would have to fight your way out duane's brother greg joined the group three days later as lead singer and keyboardist calling themselves the almond brothers band also known as abb the group also featured dickie betts butch trucks barry oakley and jamo comprised of four florida musicians a basis from chicago and a drummer from mississippi the allman brothers band drew members from other bands the 31st of february and the second coming who had lived and jammed in a victorian house down the block known as the greenhouse while living in the gray house greg wrote most of the almond brother band's first album including whipping post without access to pen and paper greg wrote the song in the middle of the night using burnt matches and an ironing board cover the almond brothers band held initial rehearsals at the comic book club on fourth side street in jacksonville within weeks the band moved to macon georgia now it also says in 1971 the allman brothers band drew critical acclaim with the live album live at fillmore east and their 1972 double album eda peach was a billboard top five smash now this there's a little more to the story because this was apparently from what um greg says this was butch trucks house and butch was wanting to form a band with greg and dwayne a little before this when they had went out down and did a session in miami together but greg said he didn't feel like that was the form of a band that was just kind of like a see what happens when we get together and jam but when dwayne had went back to where he was making a little bit of a living at fame recording he met jaymo and he said once he met jamo that was really where this all started he had called greg who was living in los angeles at the time because he was fulfilling their contract from a ban they had before this and greg said he found a friend that was actually from florida that was out visiting los angeles and greg said look man i'll give you some gas money and a little bit more to drive me back to florida so the friend drove him here they pulled up right here greg went up dwayne came out met him at the doorway said to the friend hey thanks for bringing him in the friend was one of their old bass players from the hourglass their former band he thought he was bringing greg here in the hopes of getting a job as a bassist and dwayne just said thanks for bringing greg home and slam the door in his face and they went inside and had that jam session now what's cool is that they have that jam session right inside here the family that owns it even has like a hippies used back door and they have an almond brothers band theme and everything and right up at the front you can see the mushrooms so the sign up there actually said this is a private residence and just to respect the house but i know they're really cool about almond brothers fans being here greg said that dwayne called him and said hey i have the start of a band we need you to come and be our organ player i want you to play hammond b3 and greg said i've only even sat behind one like two times but he said dwayne said i want you to write our songs so write some songs and bring them and so greg said when he got here he saw the whole band inside and they said play us your songs so he played them like 20 songs and they didn't care for any of them and then he got to dreams at the end and ate my cross to bear and they loved those and he said they pretty much played him the way that we all know those songs now and that's how the band formed inside very cool to see this house with some historical status let's go see the greenhouse real quick now one of the rumors online it says pretty much everywhere is that ronnie van zandt the lead singer of lyndon skynyrd also lived in the gray house the house that the band formed in when i met gene odom who was one of ronnie's closest friends i mentioned that to him he said yeah that's absolute bs he said and the entire time of my life that i knew ronnie vanzant he never lived in that house he may have been in that house at one point or another when they didn't live there but he said no he never lived in that house just my luck is it would start really really pouring once i get here to do it so there's the green house and it's definitely a greenhouse this is where the the two bands before it was almond brothers band two bands converged adding greg to become the almond brothers band this is where second coming when it was that band this is where they used to rehearse with dickie bets and to show you how close they are the house that we just came from is the very next block right there you can almost see the house from here greg allman said at the time that he got this phone call from dwayne telling him to come back he was really shocked because duane was mad at him for staying out in los angeles when the rest of like when dwayne wanted to leave and always wanted the brothers to be together but also because he said he knew that duane was making good money doing sessions at fame in muscle shoals and was afraid like oh since duane's making a lot of money he will never want to do any projects with me again and that wasn't the case one funny story is that greg said when he moved into that house that they gave him a room on the top floor put like this cool sofa in it and dwayne came up and said hey do not make any noise after this time or we're out of here because the family had a baby in there and if they woke up the baby they were gonna get kicked out so greg had to write the whipping post very quietly then greg said one day he went into that room and they had bought him a b3 organ and a leslie and it were covered up with a bed sheet and he took the sheet off he saw it and there were a bunch of joints rolled there and dwayne said now don't come out until you know how to play that thing and finish those songs well goodbye florida hello georgia all right more roadside america they sucked me in i gotta check out peach world because it says over 250 items of peach everything and they actually have a little like petting zoo farm also yeah it is peach everything peach bread peach pies peach fudge peach jam peaches peach slushie p you have peach tea and peach cider peach cider that's one i'd pick which one's that oh okay thank you it makes a really good mixer too oh nice mmm really good peaches and cream popcorn peach animal heads i'm kidding this place is great peach cobbler in a jar oh that sounds good peach butter peach candles nice those are great there's some of that peach cider southern peach barbecue sauce i like peach but it seems like it's a little extreme look at their postcards those are great feeling peachy vanilla peaches that sounds pretty good yeah this is a fun stop i like this place that stop was pretty cool that was worth it and i even got a loaf of that peach bread for my friends that i'm going to see in a couple of days little hello good to see you gift all right it looks like there's a some sort of german town or at least some sort of really authentic german restaurant in a town about 30 minutes away from here so i'm gonna detour and go check that out i love german food well we've made it to hinesville i haven't seen one of these in a long time a jcpenney catalog merchant where you could order something through jcpenney then just come pick it up here major throwback to my youth very cool courthouse here in town fort morris cannon what's that all about let's check this out this is actually a cannon that was used during the revolutionary war they tell of a battle that ensued at fort morris in 1779 and they said many years later in 1940 they uncovered this cannon in the ruins of the uh the famous site so now they have it here as a reminder of our independence here's our destination some rosenhoff they also have a german grocer next door let's try this out this should be great this is an authentic german restaurant i love it already got like the cuckoo clock here that's my table i've got the castle behind me kind of torn between the bratwurst plate here and the sour broth i feel like i should get one of those from my house one of those clocks so a little warning from me to you if you're ever in a german restaurant like an authentic german restaurant and they have mustard on your table do not get carried away that stuff is insanely hot from what we are normally used to this has been a really fun day i've been having a blast even with all the rain all right the dinner is served two brothers some sauerkraut and you get your option of fries or german potato salad so i went for that german potato salad let's dig into that i will use the condiments but sparingly so for me plan of attack is to usually start with the sauerkraut on the sausage or the bratwurst first then if that's not totally perfect then you add the mustard it's insanely good everything's really good the potato salad is uh is a real surprise because it's warm and i really like it but i couldn't describe to you what it tastes like you just have to try it yourself and i went ahead and added a little bit of the mustard i've been trying that out too i would say that hit the spot i'm not staying at this holiday inn express but i just drove past it and saw something amazing here you gotta see this look at this fountain oh my gosh it's a shame they don't have the water turned on but that is an amazing display of lions [Applause] look at that every tier is lion heads [Music] i love it and that's not all check out their light post over here how cool is that all those dolphins and just so the mailbox didn't look boring they put a horse head on there all right south carolina or bust once we pass through here this is our gateway to south carolina [Music] all right my friends i want to call it a day thank you jackie harrison and kathleen norris for becoming my newest patreons hope you enjoyed our travels through florida and georgia today getting to see a little bit of almond brothers history which was awesome and uh just some roadside america thank you all for watching we'll see you next time have a great night [Music] cause there's a grace to be we
