Bird Dancing - 2021 Morongo Pow Wow

again announcing for the dinner this evening with your tickets it's going to be at dancer dinner let me take my glasses i need to give me some some bob vocals here ramona's food truck elders purse elders first with tickets the committee gave us all meal tickets so we're gonna eat at ramona's dinner a ramona's food truck at five o'clock all right that's what she asked me to dance well we got this time i want to say hello my good friend paul gobel from the powwows.com this is screening this live about indian country good to see you paul yes all right richard parker good friend from the omaha nation yeah good here come my lovely wife all the way from peach springs here she is wanda jean all right her daddy was navajo her mama was hualapai from the what's solemny family again that front row on the left side is for the uh morongo elders morongo people first and then the visitors on this side the other side all right all right a reminder while we're here we haven't got a chance to go out and take a look at the the um vendors travel many miles to be here some from as far away as canada kansas oklahoma and new mexico arizona here in california and they're right out there and all of the canopies all of our vendors go check them out take something home with you it's that time of the year where we give gifts christmas time is coming soon so go do your early shopping get it done all right security's uh removing some disruptive people now i just say but they're reminding all of our people that the front row on that side is for our morongo elders all right i want to welcome our bird dancers they'll be out there on the floor dancing very soon and we were going to have contests so they will be announcing the category the age group and there'll be a song group for each category this bird dance is very beautiful very rhythmic and just uh very soothing to listen to bird songs they have tranquility and it's good it's a good feeling this whole arena will be blessed by the songs and the dance and the songs will tell a beginning of the tribe origin tribal origin and maybe there later on as they developed a tribe there might have been division or splits and they may have resulted in some of the band moving away i know that's true of my wife's tribe walapai and but they come together this time each and every year i believe it's during the month of august i'm not sure they have a pie pie celebration down in baja california a lot of our singers go down and travel down to that region to visit with the pie pies so nick sometimes we'll show up and be here at our gathering so welcome all of our bird singers and dancers we'll be getting started very shortly again a reminder the elders are going to eat first after five o'clock at ramona's uh food booth so all your elders going to be first when we start that feeding singers get ready get your gourds get ready you're going to be called upon very soon all right yeah we finished early so that's why there's a little bit of delay in getting started schedules start at 5. so our coordinators and all the principals in this part of our program will be here at five get us underway get us kicked off and almost uh most tribes when they get their ceremonies ready to go they have a starting song i don't know if it's a true of this uh this style of dancing but we do have a starting song that kind of calls all the dancers to the to the arena here hey while we're at it uh does anybody happen to have a charging cord for pride travel scooter 12 boat three prong if you have a can i borrowed a while to charge up my my uh electric car yeah somebody said yeah could you bring it up here to the outlet right down below you and we'll plug it in and charge it up i don't know how much time i let my sons packed their our car and left it out so if you have a charging cable could i borrow it please thank you here she comes oh now you saved my day i'll be pushing my cart back to the hotel that's exactly the same one all right okay i'll give it back to you i want to turn it okay okay all right i found a rescue okay thank you appreciate it okay i remember yeah just go around go around that way tell him you're the mc's wife i need to charge my heart out hey there lady all right we found a cord a charge cord so we're gonna plug in my my cart hopefully for a couple of maybe an hour or so and then i'll be good to go welcome bird dancers and singers to the 30th annual thunder and lightning morongo powwow and bird dancing all right security can you let her through she got through yeah we lived in peach springs for about a year and a half back in the mid 1970s and this dance was uh always uh always there you know at celebration maybe a special milestone in an individual's life or just in the annual peach festival they would have the bird singers march in the parade so it's always good to see this dance and the beauty of this dance all right looks like we got a spokesperson for the bird singing and dancing checking it out so we'll turn it over to our bird singing and dancing oh many of the colorado river tribes have this dance bird dense yeah this this dance and songs have been we would sometimes call it stolen taken and they they used their songs and they learned the songs and they took them all the way around joining states they traveled with them songs a lot of the tribes have adapted and adopted these songs the bird dance all right i remember a long long time ago we lived in san bernardino and went to a gathering just someplace near los angeles palm springs and it was out in the sand dunes and there was a wicker branches all around it and i remember going through that sand to get to where they were bird dancing but it was beautiful very inspirational so i had a good enjoyable time there's some royalty that are here for the bird dance if you are here we invite you to participate take part and be a inspiration to the bird dancing singing welcome elders good to look out there and see our beautiful elders you know they have been through hard life hard times and they teach us and we learn from them i'm soon going to be an elder i'm already an elder and i take part in my tribal ceremonies in oklahoma i'm a member of the kiowa tribe but i uh take part in our dances back home among our kiowa and we have many different dances too that are part of our history part of our past and some we don't dance anymore we put away the bundles and put away some of the things that were important at one time so we contemporary everything becomes contemporary but we enjoy going out into communities and meeting and greeting others to see the elders it just makes us so happy that god has given you life god has given you your strength to come out and keep us in line a lot of time we do things that we shouldn't do and the elders will step in and step up and tell us we shouldn't be doing that we shouldn't be doing that so listen to your elders listen to our elders they're good people this young man from verona came up to the table a while ago i was invited to be down in verona for their celebration but i was under treatment doctor's treatment i had two catheters in my in my uh urinal track and in my heart area and i had to wait till the doctor cleared me to travel so they just cleared me on friday a thursday so i'm able to be here and glad god gave me another another chance to be here at morongo so i know you're going to enjoy this part of our program once we get underway good to see you all fill the chairs all the way around arena and we're just waiting for the coordinators to step up and take over and i don't want to take anything away from them because i'm just uh here as a guest and uh enjoy doing what i'm doing all right we have gourd rattle warming up getting ready so gourd dance coordinators i'm sorry not gord bird dance bird dance coordinators want to turn it over to you get it on the way all right mike morales is in the house getting his his orders and he'll be up here to get it going and get it coordinated i just wanted to take a few minutes to talk about this dance a little bit and i'm not an expert i didn't grow up in this in this culture but i appreciate it it's beautiful it's a beautiful kinship among all the colorado river tribes and those hualapais and havasupais yappa pies and all the grand canyon people the people of the pines well by yeah just uh good to see you all yeah beautiful land here god creator blessed you and gave you precious precious items resources through prayers you prayed for this to come to existence and it did the building of this casino that could help our elders out give them a little bit of income and education and funds so appreciate your prayers so i'm gonna turn over to partner same thing these singers are their own group so they're being judged as a group so we have to say you respect their groups and let them sing and just rather support come out and support them richard parker will bring in our eagle staff all right mike check want to say thank you to the morongo crew taking care of arena breaking down the chairs thank you dancers start making their way to the grand entry staging area all the dancers that are registered for contest dancing come on over we're going to have our invocation and then we're going to bring in our our dancers with a grand the tribal council members had lost several children through the cobit right here in morongo she stayed out she didn't dance and you know those things we pray for wellness for our people some families
