[Music] [Music] well in terms of taylor the tulsa oklahoma cowboy getting his chance if he just does the time he didn't qualifying tie which is easier said than done he should move to the lead absolutely you know but this is the reason we play the game and you know as as fred and i know whenever you come to a championship round situation you've got to learn how to deal with those butterflies and you've got to learn to deal with that pressure that that is always there and the guy that is the most prepared is able to rely on his reaction and and really that's the only way you can can get it done because everything happens so fast oh god he was a little late it's a mess critical miss and back to that point you guys mentioned earlier in terms of the nerves and the pressure [Applause] yeah i would have to think that's that's part of it you saw he was way off the barrier and then and then just you know he doesn't get dropped down in there far enough to catch that left horn and right over his head he goes it got got too tight before he got in there we've seen that right in no matter the sport oh so many times an athlete walks away shaking their head wishing and wondering what could have gone differently so it comes down to charles barrett he is the guy that has the final say in how these standings sort out he was the top qualifier at 4.35 seconds he duplicates that run again craig and he wins the rodeo he better think of it as simply as you just stated it right she very good in the box and ty again right you know how poor this can be the horse is your partner in this that's absolutely right you can kind of see james's horse wanting to kind of rare up in there and jitter around and that you know that's what will make you miss that barrier that that head start that you have to give the steer good start got down but not enough had trouble getting the sphere to the ground 5.52 the official time and that's going to give the win to sterling walton i want to point out something right here guys when he hit this deer watch how his feet had his feet went away from him and then he got on his knees and had to crawl with that steering and cost him a win in the rodeo let's send it to kate well what a run you made and let's talk about the approach you were first out you knew the competition coming behind you did you want to just make a smooth run or did you know you had to push it and really set the pace there i really wanted to go fast but i was late but hey still fast enough take us to those moments right before what were you looking for there go fast [Laughter] [Applause] take in this moment for a second it's the crowd you're in vegas bill pickett rodeo first thought that comes to your mind a great opportunity it was fun congratulations enjoy this one thank you great that sterling walton was concentrating on being fast i think he also wanted that interview to be over with as soon as possible sterling walton wins the bulldogging ahead of charles barrett and james taylor being around bill pickett has afforded my family the opportunity to just travel all over meet people from coast to coast and we've had an opportunity to through rodeo to teach our children responsibility you know i i just i can't say enough about the family environment of the bill picking invitational rodeo great look at how calm you have to be in terms of pre-release how about that time 2.63 seconds new leader this looks great right here you know you can see that rope that goes in front of the horse when they're backed into the box that that's the barrier rope they have to give that steer a head start and boy she got there fast does her job focus clearly evident right there and now just one more competitor will she be the winner we're about to find out denisha henderson the final competitor in the ladies steer on decorating been involved with the bill pickett rodeo since 1995. fred she was the fastest qualifier she really was and and i think she was around 1-6 but she's going to have to be almost duplicate that run here in a second good start [Applause] 2.79 isn't enough she's 16 100 of a second slower than krishon ever so close but tai back to the point we were trying to make you better not blink in this sport yeah you know it's everything happened so fast and you know the money is so much won or lost on that barrier rope that you see going in front and you know the closer you can get to that barrier the better shot you're going to have again you see this steer kind of run in front of her horse i thought she did a great job making the adjustment and still getting the flag she really did because she actually bumped that steer two sub three second runs krishon adair 2.63 denisha henderson 2.79 and jasmine bennett finishes in third sean what a run so much happens in just a few seconds how did you calm the nerves before this one oh i've been calming nerves all week i was really nervous today i just took some deep breaths in let the chips fall where they may and it all paid off and you're not only a horse woman but you're a mama you're just telling me about your six-year-old daughter when she sees mom out here what do you want her to know i just wanted to know that i tried my best and i try and i just want her to try as hard as i try so well said congratulations thank you so much how how cool is that right there look at this right here you can see she really had to lean out of that saddle and and uh what a cool thing and and what an what an awesome example for her for her child it is time for tie down roping chris rawling dionne osborne and matthew sloane are our finalists and fred this is your sport no one knows it better what were the keys for you well the keys for me were a lot of hard work you know i put in a lot of time in the practice pin and that way i was prepared when i got to the rodeo i just reacted to the situation that was at hand these three guys are definitely going to want to react as quickly as possible tai this is one of those events that as you start to parcel it and break it down there are a number of critical components absolutely craig and the thing you got to remember is this sport was truly born from real ranch work you know this is how forever since the beginning of ranching and cowboys this is how you doctor six sick animals and you know when you're out on several thousand acres this is your only way to to get one down and administer the medicine that they might need fred you were spot on with sterling walton earlier chris rowling was another athlete you mentioned you think this is his i like i like chris a lot he ropes good i don't think pressure bothers him good start cast duck left my goodness [Applause] well that is just an unfortunate case clock's still going eventually the time limit will run out and you can see the frustration on the face of chris rollins probably wishing he would have took that one little quicker shot that he had he he had a chance at that half really i mean she went left pretty good but he was right on top of her too dion osborne from morris oklahoma's next not only a tie-down roper but also in his spare time a stock contractor for rodeos yes i think he owns quite a few uh bulls and horses and it provides them for for the rodeos up in oklahoma dion made a pretty good run the first time let's see what happens here you can see that you can see the yellow swabs he has in that horse's ears that's that's to try to help his horse get used to this big building with all the noise [Applause] a miss as well so dionne osborne unable to convert [Music] fred i think the logical question then that comes with both chris and dion not doing their job does that put extra or less pressure on matthew sloan i'm gonna say less pressure you know i relish the time to back in there and have to catch one but that's not the case here and i'm not out there i would not i would try to not be late at the start and just take a good safe throw and tie this calf down to win the deal [Music] it is all in the hands of matthew sloane third competitor trying to be the only man to convert [Applause] there it is matthew sloan takes care of business and wins the tie down roping well you could see him you know get up there and took a couple extra swings over the back of that calf to make sure that he got a clean catch and [Applause] that had to feel good when he felt it go around his mouth i'll tell you what he's done a pretty good job because that calf stepped left right about the time he threw it and then he just went down there and and made a good solid tie he bobbled just a little bit but it was fast enough to win the rodeo matthew last to go so you knew all you had to do is catch sometimes that could get the nerves going sometimes it works your favorite did here so how did you stay composed well i just told myself don't cheat myself and take the same throw i took earlier and be on the barrier and we get to see the result here in the arena give everyone a sense of the hard work that goes in behind the scenes to be standing here there's a lot of hard work that goes into it i got some buddies at home that are real hard on me because they know how much potential i have and i told them what i was going to come do so that's what i tried to do and it all paid off congratulations thank you matthew sloane a fan of hard work and if you're a fan of tie down roping read keith ren cartwright's upcoming book black cowboys of rodeo fred's in it and a lot of great other cowboys matthew sloane wins the tie down here well you can ask any great athlete they'll probably tell you they fell in love with their sport at a very young age our junior breakaway competitors already feel that passion they'll put their skills to the test momentarily it's been almost 90 years since bill pickett died and for the first time in history the bill pickett invitational rodeo is being broadcast on network television and you get to be a part of it [Applause] it's been a lot of fun here in las vegas we've got another rodeo in a little over a month join us on july 31st at 1 pm eastern for the gold medal round of the days of 47 right here on cbs let's highlight the competitors in junior breakaway tie starting with courtney solomon oh i love the determination courtney has and what a talented young little girl and then fred tegan ford got his shot teagan ford tried his heart out you know this was awful big stage for these kids this weekend and they're going to grow and learn from it and we're going to see their names for a long time to come ty no one was better than harold williams jr i think this little guy right here was my favorite of the whole rodeo this little boy right here is going to set the world on fire craig he mastered the hand-eye coordination of junior breakaway kate's with our winner what a run my friend i know you didn't get that first shot you wanted you had to kick up there and you had to make it happen and you were so poised so confident where does that come from my family and my friends and stuff let's talk about your family a lot of rodeo champs and your family lots of generations what does it mean to be out here and supporting and honoring them i don't really know well tell me this what does your dad think about you being right here because i know he's a big supporter good you told me before you want to be a world champion why do you want to be a world champion why do you want to be in the sport of rodeo so i can be good like my uncles and my dad this is just the very first the las vegas senior but they're going to be seeing a lot more congratulations thank you there's that poise that's awesome yeah and further confirmation guys right just how important the bill picket rodeo is to all the generations that have taken part since 1984. the speed and finesse of ladies barrel racing is coming up including supernova savannah roberts she'll get her chance to shine the bill pickett rodeo was created for african-american cowboys and cowgirls to tell their stories and to tell the history of black cowboys and cowgirls in the development of the west the reality is that history doesn't tell that story so when the founder louvassan of the bill pickett rodeo had this vision he wanted to create a platform that would entertain communities but at the same time educate them and give the black cowboys and cowgirls a platform to showcase their skills and i think we've been successful in doing that for the last 37 years [Music] i'm 13 i'm going into ninth grade uh i do i'm from colorado colorado springs um and that's that's me i do i compete in the barrel racing that's my main event in the epir and i also compete in like the pole bending breakaway and ribbon roping savannah knows not only what's at stake but has her career goals mapped out as she will go up against not only her sister aaliyah but also christiane adair and ty what i always love about barrel racing is fastest qualifier goes first because they get that clean dirt that's right you don't want them ruts in that dirt you want a nice smooth surface for that [Applause] [Music] horse [Applause] we're still going to wait for the official time but fred aaliyah that was an uncharacteristic mistake on that first barrel she went really wide it really was she got wide on the first barrel i don't know uh if she didn't check her horse soon enough there but it cost her quite a bit of time yeah this is the top barrel the third barrel right here towards the finish and we're gonna wait to see what they give her officially as a time but that has left the door open for sean adair [Applause] no question that's going to be the top time for sean adair tai showing she's a gamer yeah she's really hustling you can see she's asking this horse for everything now watch her lift her leg whenever she's about to hit this barrel you know that that shows a good uh presence of mind of what's going on you can see it she does it again here on the third barrel just to make sure she gets around it i love to see that kind of hustle and try she made the exact exact same run twice guys so as we've seen some issues with the clock they've awarded her 14.19 seconds so that is the standard as savannah roberts gets set to go as the third competitor here she is she knows exactly what she needs [Music] [Music] just crowds into it just misses out 14.298 that's going to be good enough for second tai was interesting it almost almost looked like savannah was trying to build into that run yeah you see right here as this horse comes around you know he just he got a little bit wide on a couple of barrels and when you're talking about just such close times i mean any any even the tiniest little bottle is going to cost you in this event savannah's time 14.298 and that will slot her into second kate is with prashant we meet again successful in the first event you come back in the barrel racing how did you take the momentum from that first championship and bring it right here oh i feed off of momentum once i'm running it's just easier to keep running slow down i might get beat or caught and speaking of that because you are so in the moment once you leave here you have those buckles you take it all in what will you be thinking about next weekend we got to do it all again next weekend we go home and practice and get ready for the next one let's talk about that because what's happening here is special it's a celebration but this is every day for you guys what does it mean to bring this to a larger audience and let them know what your life is like oh man it's amazing it's so much fun i'm so grateful for the opportunity congratulations thank you so much the difference a little over one tenth of a second as christian adair takes her second win of the day 14.19 savannah roberts in second at 14.30 and savannah's sister aaliyah in third well it takes a ton of talent to go up against a foe that actually weighs a ton bull riding is not for the faint of heart it's next we're fortunate that these cowboys and cowgirls are so committed the minions save their vacation time to be able to rotary on the weekends they pay their own way to get to the rodeo they pay their own way to enter so there's a commitment long greater than just being at a rodeo i've competed all over the world in many different associations mostly bill pickett and uh i've probably won i don't know 16 to 20 uh champion titles it's it i think is very good you know because a lot of people just don't know you know so this would be a very good stepping stone for us there's a story that i always get emotional about it's it happened in our at our rodeo in memphis tennessee when a little seven-year-old boy walked into the rodeo and if you i was standing there and i saw his face his eyes got as big as saucers and he put his little hands on his hip and he said i can't believe this there are black cowboys and cowgirls and i just stood there and started crying [Music] it is time for the big bovine athletes to come out to play jamarcus whiting tank adams and ouncy mitchell now try to tame their beasts we're going to start ty with jamarcus whiting yeah so that you know you got to stand for eight seconds the the the scoring goes between is on a scale of 150 of that for the bull the other 50 is for how much control and form the rider has buck lives up to his name as he bucks off jamarcus in only 2.2 seconds well this is a really good bull and you'll see him kind of lead watch as the bull goes forward right here you see him going backwards and that's why you know you got that right hand down and holding on to that rope and whenever your your counter movement gets out of time those bulls are going to jerk on you and they're going to jerk you into your hand coming up next the next rider in the shoots tank adams fred did you ever think about doing this sport i thought about it twice ty and i talked about it a little bit i got on two of them when i was about 16 years old and that was two too many and and so what you're telling me is you're a little bit smarter than ty well yeah the thing of it is is you've got to be you've got to do this event you've got to be too lazy to work and too nervous to steal well tank adams is going to try to prove that it's more based on skill as he's set to be aboard red velvet and to move to the lead after jamarcus whiting's buck off ty you brought up a great point that new fans might not realize is that the bull is as much an athlete as the writer well and that's the thing and you know they're half the score so if you think of it like in the of like an olympic term say diving you know the bull is the difficulty of the dive so you're one that bull to get as much of his 50 points as possible adams looks ready moves up to the front end [Applause] every rider's got their own technique and how settled they get before they nod here we go oh tough landing as adams hits the dirt with conviction red velvet turned out to be anything but smooth i'll tell you craig we're seeing some some bulls that are bucking pretty hard and tank's doing a lot of things right you can see them breaking forward at the hips as this bull's jumping and that bull kind of stumbled and shot forward and that threw his timing all off now when you're talking about a a game of counter movement whenever they change the rhythm like that that's the difficult part and another look at that landing tank adams the latest to feel the pain ouncy mitchell the last competitor cousin of ezekiel mitchell the man who is starting to make waves at the pbr level ty alcy's been at that level as well on a few occasions he's facing guapo [Applause] how about that for a showcase of skill saving the best for last this was really good craig and i'll tell you i was really nervous for him the way they opened that gate all the way up the reason the gate opens from the back of the bull is to get that bull to turn and look and the way they blowed it wide open that was scary we saw antsy make two really good rides today no question this is the undisputed champion now right there it was so nice that that bull turned for him and you can see that he's in total command the whole way you'll see him start opening up with this outside leg this is a great job pronouncing knowing how big this moment is ouncy mitchell 84 points no question the winner here at the bill pickett rodeo in the bull riding competition as tank adams and jamarcus whiting [ __ ] off but it was just seemed to be ouncy mitchell's day well it took guapo a minute to decide to leave the shoot but when he finally did he was right there into your hand how did you take advantage of that opportunity well when he paused a little bit i was like he's nervous i got him now and it all worked out and you do this week in and week out to win these buckles like what valeria and sean are about to hand you but this one in particular where does this rank for you in your career well i love this event because it's the kind of the first one so it just it's it's speechless can't even say what it is the emotion says it all congratulations thank you ty we're gonna go back to the junior breakaway for the kubota ride of the day oh man i loved watching harold williams this little boy right here is gonna set the world on fire he had all the confidence no jitters his first time on the big stage and that buckles about as big as he is we're gonna roll through all the winners of the 2021 bill pickett rodeo but fred just your final thoughts because i really feel this event lived up to its billing i think so too craig i i i was really impressed by a lot of things that went on here today and uh we had a two event winner and then we had some guys that hadn't won rodeos of this magnitude and so uh the crowd was great the competition was pretty fierce and uh there's a lot of positives to come out of this i was glad to be a part and as you said at the beginning of the show great to be on cbs well congratulations once again to all of our champions our next rodeo is the days of 47 gold medal round here on cbs july 31st for ty murray fred whitfield kate harrison and our entire crew i'm craig hummer thanks for watching
