Bill Nighy explores The Courtauld Gallery (2023)

foreign it's been a long time since I've been to one of my favorite places in London the courthouse Gallery the building has always been beautiful with its spiral staircase and spacious galleries filled with one of the best collections of Art in the country such as this an intricate brass and silver handbag made in mosul in the 1300s it's one of the finest pieces of Islamic metalwork in existence I would be lying if I told you I didn't have favorites and they're mostly up here on the top floor these fresh bright rooms are home to the courthold's world-renowned collection of impressionist and post-impressionist paintings and kicking things off there's degars woman at a window I love this painting I love the way that dagar has placed the sitter in the dark against the light and I love what he's done with the light foreign what an incredible place to view these paintings all the major artists of the impressionist and post-impressionist movements are here Renoir Pizarro GoGo to newsletter track Cezanne Surah and of course Mane's bar at the Folly Berger there's something new to discover every time you look at this painting a trapeze artist's legs hanging off the frame the fashionable crowd reflected in the mirror and the barmaid's eyes with her unreadable expression those monets bars of flowers which I feel I've never really seen before but now I can get close to it I can really appreciate and enjoy it I love that you can see the thickly applied overlapping Strokes of paint this helps to reflect the light and gives depth to the color it was a technique favored by the impressionist it looks like it was done very quickly but actually Monet labored over this painting Van Gogh also used thick brush Strokes to give life to his painting but went further look at the amazing colors he used to construct this self-portrait it was painted after he cut off his ear during a mental crisis it's very moving and Powerful if you love art it doesn't get much better than this it doesn't get much better than the quartile Gallery you can see works from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance through to impressionism and even Contemporary Art in Grand but also intimate spaces it's all here and it's open again every day at Somerset house in central London and there's coffee and cake I'll buy a cake if I'm here and if you don't like it I'll give you your money if you can find me which you won't trust me but give it a shot what do you think [Music]
