Bighorn Canyon has the best campsite we've ever found.

we've been on the road for several weeks and we've just finished driving across Montana but we're not done with this state quite yet as we're on our way to the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area as we're headed east towards South Dakota and the Black Hills come camp with us at the coolest spot we've ever been to weathering the storms I've been doing a 10 000 foot mountain pass over the Bighorn mountains some summer vacation stick around yeah Bighorn Canyon an Undiscovered treasure my bad we just discovered it for everyone this is part of the Yellowstone Adventure where we made no plans we were at them Mammoth Visitor Center there's a map of all the you know not just national parks but the department of interior stuff this is a national Recreation Area that's it anyway they had a map of them all and I saw it and I was like hey that's kind of where we're going let's go there now we're here and we're gonna try and find a spot to stay a few nights [Music] the production quality is not nearly as high as the national park there's gonna be a big horn oh yeah oh the road goes much further than I thought we were going to be in Montana is that red thing on the state line This is the state line oh okay yeah we're gonna be down thank you Barry's Landing Bighorn Canyon on the back oh it does oh a horse [Music] I thought searching for the right way to keep my head above the clouds [Music] [Music] life's moving faster it's so just a game we play I've been losing myself in every single ways [Music] I've played all my cards and I'm all out of love put my money yeah look at let's just keep going it's not far so there's plenty done deal right put that in the bank guys we found a campsite on the Canyon Rim we'll get in it quick and they left today yeah let's get in there camped in maybe it might be time will tell so we're all set up we haven't like had our full boondocking setup out this whole trip I don't feel like so we dig this place we might stay for a long time here it's a little windy it's the only downside but it's not it's not bad at all since we're gonna stay here for a few days and this will be our first like actually kind of Extended off-grid Stay on the trip we're uh taking advantage of our solar capabilities so got the jackery eating up some of this afternoon sun it's pulling in 40 Watts the house battery is at 100 percent so we were just wasting solar so let's see now I hooked up our e-bike batteries so now we're net loss of 170 Watts but each charger is 150 watts so one of them is basically just being charged by the solar outright the other is charging off the house battery so just don't want to squander Sunshine otherwise you know it might you know it might be raining all day tomorrow it's just kind of nuts like we're kids of the 90s into think that like we're just out here creating our own electricity I don't know yeah it blows my mind we had solar panels when we were kids but it was like the size of this roof and it pulled 10 watts and you could like trickle charge a battery with it no and like yeah it cost four thousand dollars you know I remember the First Solar thing we had was a little it's about it like it charged a little battery you could like charge your phone off oh that you and I had yeah yeah yeah that little silver battery I mean the First Solar thing I had was a Casio calculator those were cool they used like micro amps you got it I got some chicken marinating in there Henry's like going all out in the shade tent are you getting all set up bro [Applause] yes excellent and this is just it's just this like this stuff's cool but this is cool but this is cooler this is uh Barry's Landing yeah in the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area this is the landing so you know there were some campsites further up the creek here that feeds into the main river um they were like you know not Canyon views but a little more private this is up against the parking area for the boats and the boat slip which that's going to shut down here at like 8pm or something like that and then there's a ring of campsites around it and it looks like they're starting to fill in there's only one left at this point it's a Sunday night in June guys we just ran out of propane that was our last bottle we're gonna be inside cooking for the rest of this trip this camping this site but I have a solution [Music] works right thank you it's getting a little too windy for that thing that's my worst what's that was it that Gatorade warming up something that had pressure in it guys yeah this is Independence Missouri oh look I have an interactive map that shows you places to go along with Trail that's a lot of dinner for you isn't it yeah what would that take them you guys aren't gonna believe this it's gonna rain again apart for the course on this trip [Music] well that's about as packed down as we get we got a sunset over here and we got a rainbow over here [Music] nothing to lose we got a neck and hit me in here are you getting your shower time on it's full of baloney [Music] it's almost bedtime [Music] I just wanted everyone to see the vibe we had going back here these are my my tent lights yeah do they hold a charge I only have that long battery I have to put their USB but they need like a little USB pen foreign needs to get up and watch the trash truck get home at our old house like every week good morning YouTube it's Monday so Casey had to get right to work this morning I have been making some breakfast this morning but it said they got most of them got shot illegally okay so that most might be in the Park yeah I think the wolves are protected as an endangered species and it's illegal to shoot them anywhere I think we were reading our book about the Wolves of Yellowstone last night now that we've been there and have a little more context it was actually way more interesting Henry and I were joking this morning about having chocolate for breakfast so I made him a hot chocolate with his breakfast it only seemed Fair uh it's trash day here we got to watch the trash truck dump out the dumpsters which for a young boy is a great joy in life that uh was taken from him when we moved up a driveway where we can't see our bins on the curb in the mornings so for years he's missed that experience and today we got to have it great day already last night I woke up in the middle of the night and I swear to God there was like a mouse sound or a squirrel or some kind of animal like in my bin above my head I was laying there like freaking out about it for a long time and I finally woke him up and Casey was like no it's just the wind blowing the straps on the trash here so he took the Trasher down and the sound went away so I guess that's all it was at the same time that that was all happening Henry just like all of a sudden like screamed in his sleep and he goes I'm okay it was just a dream it was just a dream about a tarantula One Financial it was like 10 10 okay and they were all in my bed oh gosh oh god spider freak out oh yeah Casey battled uh finally won a battle with a spider that's been it took me three days but I got the Ambassador last night yeah yeah it has been like three days of them seeing the same spider we think and like not being able to get it and then I think Henry and I might ride the bike down the road and see if we can get to like a hiking trail or something in case he will be working all day Apparently after taking last week off people are not working breakfast time and I said oh I have a shop but I would actually just touch in my Band-Aid oh yeah that is a soft Band-Aid that's what I could talk [Music] we are headed to I think it's called Hillsboro Hillsboro and it's an Old Ranch there are like four or five hold uh branches out here that you can go check out like all the buildings from this one's very close to our campsite a river what can we find here can you see can you hear us too far I can see hey sorry I'm still in a meeting but I'll check in with okay okay so the trail turns into a definite hiking not biking trail so we found a little spot to walk up here and we're gonna head out on foot now I got my water some other fun things we have these little UV stickers they turn bright purple we'll show you later when your sunscreen wears off and you put your sunscreen on over it and it turns clear when it doesn't detect UV so Henry and I each have a little purple dot on us to remind us to reapply sunscreen and I'm excited to try that out oh look it says there's a short hike of one mile and a long hike of three months enjoy this Trail and leave no Trace beware of rattlesnakes no bikes Wildlife viewing [Music] did you see that it was like a I don't know an oak man [Music] look at him go with me [Music] don't eat a whole cluster of um did you do that yeah I picked like one of these whole things then put it in my mouth don't eat that that is way too sour yeah we're Trail snacking probably better leave more for the birds [Music] oh my goodness the remains of the town is like kind of I guess a ghost town I don't know if you could still call it that if it's being like preserved this is gonna be neat what do you think this is rad [Music] I took that little bag of M M's that you gave me and I put it in here it's cool [Music] look at the roofs they're green on the room yes [Music] ain't looking okay so this is where the blacksmith worked and it said these are his original workbenches and stuff I would have had to have fire to get things really hot and melt them there's still Nails here right I don't know what that would have been for I think it's where he bit his giant Nails some hinges [Music] [Music] does it feel cool in here it's a little cool so that's the ice house so they hold their ice from the river in the winter yeah the water went through here and they they even were making electricity using the flow of the water putting it in glass batteries that were wired up to all the buildings that means dang Paige and Henry are off on a hike and bike something or other I'm just hanging out here at the rig I'm working today but I'm taking a little break from work to just do some maintenance in here and one of the things that I've been looking at is the cabling from our solar panels that goes down to our charge controller in the basement and I put some like conduit that you just stick to the wall and it's held up for like two years but in the last year it's the tape on the back of it started to fail so while we were at Napa getting our fuel filter I picked up some of this stuff that I love loom is what they call it cable Loom and I'm just gonna bundle all these up in this and then find a way to fasten it to the wall we'll figure it out [Music] once in a while you get the motion just right here like it zips up like a zipper in there [Music] Mrs Berry this is her Root Cellar [Music] Eddie's place no it's just stuck [Music] okay I got that all tucked away nicely in a little Loom and I just gotta figure out how to get it to stay on the wall here I have some ideas I went and looked at me uh Garage in my toolbox and found two cable ties that uh have screw loops on them so I can screw these to the wall and then zip tie around them so we're gonna try that out maybe [Music] this was the post office [Music] it's starting to get purple when we get to like a good stopping point we need to put more sunscreen on how cool is that us [Music] here [Music] well [Music] can you see the RV [Music] one of the coolest new additions to our Tech kit on this trip are our gmrs radios I got a set of three for the whole family and in terrain like this we can probably get I don't know four or five miles line of sight with these and we got a gmrs license from the FCC these are you do have to be licensed but you don't have to like pass a test like ham radio and they work great hey guys just so you know it looks like you might have some rain headed your way unless they turn the radios off then they won't work at all yep did you hear me oh okay you'll beat the rain then I think so say hello to YouTube hello YouTube [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] had to shut the camera off and figure this out but here's what I came up with this one since the wall has metal behind it I just put into the corner of my terrible mounting plates for the roller shade here and then on this side I went into the cabinet for now there's a little bit of flop here in the middle but like it's very secure very stable I'm just going to trim these ends let me cleaned up [Music] we got a couple of little silicone ice trays just from like an end cap at the grocery store a while back we're finally parked long enough that we made some ice so I think I'm gonna make myself an iced tea with the leftovers of my tea from this morning's I'm so excited [Music] I don't love me till the Stars [Music] got a lot we got done George think it's funny already you haven't even started reading well [Music] um in the pictures well you could read this it says big Henry sized yeah we're good everyone's good we were sitting out by the fire and saw some rain coming you can't even see how gnarly it was but I mean it was a Squall line we got it's been really hard raindrops yeah some of that was hail I got hit with hail um God we had to like tear down the tent so fast because it started blowing away it blew the bikes over we were just like throwing stuff in the bins the white ones yeah the white ones are they gone I put them under the RV Oh Henry I'll just check on them oh there's oh his his chalk band is completely empty and just out there we'll get you a new chalk buddy what else did you put under the RV anything we need to get as soon as this front presses my bike your bike will be fine holy cow that was the front I mean we were throwing tables in here just to get it that was insane because I hope the starlink dish is okay man it's really catching some wind up there thanks for letting me know yeah so glad that he told you that I had to I was trying to pick up the trasharoo and I set it behind the RV and it instantly like took off like a kite where is it it is straps to The Bike Rack through one of the tires I know that was probably like a good 50 mile an hour wind gusts it has the okay those are 200 pounds is see this fall line on the radar I mean it kind of came from nowhere yeah man it just blew up actually the worst part of it went South of us but you can see when it bows out like that man this is strong wind how long has it been since that stormed it's like less than 10 minutes it's all over so guys peaches that look at the wicked witch that checks out down here trying to figure out where the fuel filter is and change it I had to trace the lines like three times but I finally found it in the worst spot ever there it is in between the muffler and the transmission cooler I think is what this is and it's so cramped that like the exhaust is touching my chest I don't think I can change this I think you'd have to put it on a lift to have just to be able to reach in there and to not dump gas all over your face when you open it because it's inside the frame rate I can't get it to it from the other side so I gotta decide what to do now we decided to leave this campsite today Paige may have already told you that I gotta figure out how to get out from under here without impaling myself on these exhaust clamps [Music] [Music] you've got plenty of room over here about two or three feet yeah oh bouncy oh I want a bottle is did make yeah yeah yeah I'm really excited I made Casey go through that very narrow cattle guard gate thing because there's four um historic ranches at Bighorn Canyon and Henry and I hiked out to the Hillsborough one which was beautiful but this one has a Schoolhouse and um I used to be a certified teacher I never actually really used that certification for anything except homeschooling our own kids but teaching our child to be the smartest kid ever yeah anyway I have a lot of love for like old school houses I was a big Little House on the Prairie fan so like the little one-room schoolhouse thing is my right have you told them that's where the Wilder and Wilder Adventures comes from yeah it's Henry's middle name which is because of my love of Laura Ingalls Wilder plus just the idea of you know Wilder wildness [Music] don't go in but that's cold that's gorgeous I'm gonna put my feet in it no it's against the federal law [Music] freshly mowed oh it's just how we live everywhere we go there's just people 100 yards ahead of us mowing the grass where we're gonna walk [Music] so this is the foundation of the original thing the other main house had burned down in 2015. which one of you it Casey has a work meeting on Thursday that is directing the rest of our week sort of um we would have liked to stay here at least one more night in order to get us parked and like steadily in a place over Thursday we actually need to make a little bit of ground So today we're leaving for Wyoming Buffalo we're headed to Buffalo Wyoming we're gonna stay one night and then we have a campground that we booked that has some hookups to get us refreshed a bit in Hot Springs South Dakota so we're headed to South Dakota Casey's done eating so we can start rolling whenever he's ready put your plate in the sink ready you got a sink full up there you told me that the gray was too full it was full I could hear it I can hear it in the bathtub we are going to do a mountain pass through the Bighorn National Forest and the Bighorn mountains oh I'll look up the um we'll get you some drive time lapses by the way you're coming to us on the new camera that we bought with the proceeds of your support and the old GoPro now gets to do cool stuff like right on the dashboard or on the front of the bike stuff yeah it's our it's our B camera now our other B camera check it out so if you've noticed better driving shots with occasional bug splatter in the frame this is how we'll make that happen for you now we're recording with it and now you're seeing the footage directly out of that campground he's he caught a smiled and went are you guys going up 14 pretty steep and we were like yeah yeah to like bad idea we're at 7 500 feet almost 74. we started at at the bottom we were at like
