hi it's Katrina from lost Queens to ancient treasure maps here are 10 historical mysteries from around the world number 10 the Mexican Red Queen many ancient Maya sites have been found across Mexico but one of the most mysterious are the ruins of Palenque in the basin of the Asuman Sita River in the state of Chiapas it was known by the ancient Maya as la cama and was famed for its 90-foot high pyramid called the temple of inscriptions that is covered in some of the most detailed Mayan hieroglyphs ever found Palenque became a powerful Maya capital under King Pakal the great but what was once thought to be a religious center hides a secret underneath in 1952 and archeologists discovered the tomb of Pacal hidden underground and in 1994 something even more mysterious was found researchers uncovered a hidden corridor sealed behind a wall that led to a central chamber the director of the site knew that there must be something important behind that wall inside was a monolithic limestone sarcophagus that hadn't been seen for at least 1300 years there were two skeletons next to the structure one of a young boy with signs of being sacrificed and one of an adult female with similar injuries when the lid of the tomb was finally removed the remains of a woman who died in her 50s was found covered in a red powder turns out that it was highly toxic cinnabar also known as mercuric sulfide mercuric sulfide was often used in ancient artwork of the time and could have been used as a sacred offering as an embalming ritual as red represented the Rising Sun she had a jade funeral mask and minimal wear to her teeth indicating that she was part of the aristocracy nicknamed the Red Queen archaeologists are still trying to determine why this person was deemed so important to be buried here and why she was covered so liberally with the deadly red powder some think she could have been the queen who came to palanca to marry King Pakal in 626 or his mother or another relative for now she remains known as Red Queen number nine the missing Ninth Legion the arrival of a Roman legion struck fear into the minds of any they encountered at one point the Empire stretched from Northwestern Europe to the Middle East and North Africa not everything went to plan for the conquerors though as you may know and some like the Ninth Legion simply disappeared without a trace the Ninth Legion was made up of 5000 of the Empire's best warriors and they were last known to be in present-day England during the reign of Hadrian between 117 and 138 AD their mission was to quell any rebellions that rose up against the Romans but they suddenly vanished did they encounter a Caledonian horde as many believe that overpowered them or were they redeployed in battle in the Middle East where they were similarly beaten by the Persians historians are continually finding evidence that prefers either one or the other of the leading theories but nothing that proves their fate for certain however we know it's nothing good one thing's for sure the Ninth Legion met a terrible end signaling that the pervasive threat that the Empire posed was not as infallible as story suggests number eight the Lost Colony of Roanoke the Lost Colony of Roanoke is one of the oldest unsolved mysteries from America dating back to August of 1587 what happened was that 115 English settlers had set up camp on the island of Roanoke off the coast of modern-day North Carolina the governor John White decided that he needed to sail back to England to bring more supplies to the outpost and he left his wife daughter and granddaughter along with the other settlers big mistake when he returned to England a major naval war was breaking out between England and Spain and Queen Elizabeth insisted that every available ship was made available for the war effort White was therefore delayed on going back to Roanoke and only managed to return to the colony three years later in 1590 terrible timing and you know a lot can happen in three years to his surprise and dismay when he arrived there was no sign of the colony at all and simply no trace of any of the colonists everything just looked abandoned and only strange clue about what had happened was a carving into a wooden post that said Croatoan the truth of what happened has never been discovered but there are of course a number of theories Croatoan was the name of an island to the south of Roanoke home to a Native American tribe who may have killed or abducted the colonists perhaps the people tried to sail back to England because they were starving and got lost at sea maybe they moved further inland and merged with a friendly tribe or they may have been killed in an encounter with Spanish soldiers over the years some tiny pieces of evidence have come about but all in all only the colonists can say what really happened number 7 what happened to the remains of Columbus although now it's pretty much common knowledge that Columbus did not in fact discover America and regardless about how you feel about him there's no denying that Columbus's voyages changed civilization forever by enabling Europeans to journey to the new world as you would expect such an influential Explorer was revered long after his death but his body also travelled a lot after he died and for being such a famous figure in history no one knows for sure where his remains were buried there are two places that claim to be the site of his remains the cathedral in Seville in southern Spain and the Columbus lighthouse at Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic and this is where things get complicated the confusion has arisen because of a number of reburial --hz which began in 1506 when his son became unhappy with his burial in the spanish city of viola leaf and moved him to a monastery in seville the remains stayed there until 1542 when they were moved to Santo Domingo but in 1795 when the French conquered the island from the Spanish Columbus his bones were moved to Havana in Cuba when Cuba gained independence from Spain in 1898 the remains were moved back to the cathedral in Seville in theory after this a box of bones was found in Santo Domingo with some suggesting that Columbus's remains hadn't in fact ever been moved in 2006 Spanish researchers claimed to have finally solved the mystery they took DNA from Christopher's brother Diggle and compared it to the bone fragments that Spain says were from the Explorer but that doesn't prove that those held in the dominican republic aren't also from the explorer authorities refused to allow these ones to be tested out of respect for the dead and they are adamant that the remains never left the dominican republic so the mystery of his final resting place continues is he in both is he in Spain why would the Dominican Republic just let the remains be tested maybe they don't want to know the truth number six the CBU manuscript as a civilization we have gained an understanding of some incredibly complex things such as brain surgery and quantum physics rocket science is one of these amazingly complex things and it has only been understood in the past century or that's what we've been led to believe in 1961 the CBU manuscript was discovered in romania the 450 page text was published in the 16th century based on older texts and to the surprise of everyone who found it it goes into precise detail about a multi stage rocket tree it even speaks of liquid fuel and manned rockets and as such have been written by a Hungarian military engineer named Conrad Haase at some point between 1550 and 1570 along with the Rockets were other weapon designs and while it's not clear if any of these were actually put into production it's a complete mystery how such advanced science was possible at the time number five the copper scroll the Dead Sea Scrolls were a series of parchments found in caves near the Dead Sea hence the name no one knows who wrote them and they are seen as an incredible piece of history but beyond the mysteries of the scrolls themselves is an even greater one the copper scroll it's vastly different to all of the other Scrolls and not just because it was carved into copper and set up papyrus it was found at the back of one of the caves by an archaeologist and its author script style language and content is unlike anything seen in any of the other Scrolls it was so corroded when it was found in 1955 that it had to be cut into 23 strips before being pieced back together again as soon as it was readable researchers began to translate the rare Hebrew dialect and were amazed to find that it was list of treasures and their locations the only problem is that the directions to what amounts to over a billion dollars worth of treasure assume the reader knows the general vicinity where they should be looking without a starting point the scroll is impossible to understand and has led treasure hunters to scour the world ever since is anyone you know looking for these want to go on a treasure hunt let us know in the comments below are the treasures still secretly hidden somewhere they might be long gone by now or maybe they never existed in the first place number four the lost city of Kalahari there are lots of places around the world thought to be hiding secret cities if you're in doubt there are plenty of videos about the subject on origins explained be sure to check them out one of the most mysterious of these stories has to be the lost city of the Kalahari Desert the region covers about 350,000 square miles most of which is located in Botswana and the name literally means dry waterless place towards the end of the 19th century de l'armée farini a famous tightrope walker set off on an expedition from Cape Town in South Africa following stories that have been told to him by Bushmen that he had previously worked with in his book through the Kalahari Desert he detailed how he discovered one of the lost city spoken about in Bushman legend he was taken extremely seriously and he presented his findings to the Royal Geographical Society and the Berlin geographical society where he told of the massive stones stacked on top of each other the arc-shaped layout and paths that were partly hidden beneath the sand the problem with this find is that no one has been able to locate it since even though locals speak of abandoned cities in the region because of a terrible drought are these places simply the stuff of legend are they as some suggest simply natural formations that look like cities or are there remains of ancient civilizations hidden within the sands of the desert waiting for the winds to blow away the dunes and reveal them to the world number three the Carnac stones around the French village of Carnac are more than 3000 prehistoric standing stones that were originally set in place by the pre Celtic people of the region between 6500 and 4000 years ago consisting of both single standing stones known as men hairs and clusters of stones known as dolmens it's the largest arrangement of stones like this in the world but no one has any idea about their intended purpose the main group of stones are formed in 12 rows stretching for almost a mile with a circular stone at each end to the western side are the tallest stones that are up to 14 feet tall and they get incrementally smaller towards the eastern side where the stones are about two feet tall according to local legend a Roman legion was walking through the area when the wizard Merlin turned them to stone I like that story the best others suggest that they were designed as an earthquake detector as memorials to ancestors or to chart the Stars with no evidence found as to their true purpose though this is a mystery that could stand for a further six thousand years number two where are the Irish crown jewels the Irish crown jewels with a star and badge regalia that belonged to the sovereign and grand master of the order of st. Patrick a group of Knights established by George the 3rd in 1783 the pieces were given to the order in 1830 and included the grand master star which was made from 400 Brazilian white diamonds arranged into the shape of an eight-point star and a shamrock of emeralds with rubies at the center the badge was made from 24 carat gold diamonds emeralds and rubies today the two pieces would be worth at least 20 million dollars there's just one problem they disappeared in 1907 they were being kept in a questionably secure location in Dublin Castle where thieves took advantage of the lack of security the theft occurred just four days before King Edward the seventh was due to visit and take part in a ceremony and he was furious to find out that they'd been stolen and he was forced to cancel the event despite numerous attempts to search for the missing jewels there has been no trace of them since that day which begs the question are they still in Ireland and if not where on earth did they end up number one Cleopatra's tomb she was one of the most famous women in history and the final Pharaoh of ancient Egypt but the resting place of Cleopatra remains a complete mystery it is believed that during the Roman onslaught around 30 BC Cleopatra committed suicide inside her mouth Liam with the venom of an ASP a particularly cruel way to die but better than being captured and paraded through the streets of Rome in Chains by all accounts she was embalmed and buried alongside her Roman lover Mark Antony but her mouse eleum has been lost in the thousands of years since archaeologists feel that they're getting close to solving this mystery with excavations taking place in the waters and deserts around Alexandria the geography was very different while she was alive and it's quite possible that numerous earthquakes and tidal waves could have buried her far beyond her original resting place the discovery of Cleopatra's tomb would undoubtedly be one of the greatest archaeological discoveries ever made so it's no surprise that researchers are trying their best to solve the mystery who knows perhaps it will happen during our lifetimes and bring a whole new understanding of Egypt's final Queen thanks for watching remember to subscribe and I'll see you next time bye
