[Music] welcome to another video I'm actually gonna speak in this video there's going to be a live video because I want to show you I have to tie these to these little baitfish patterns now recently came up with these and they've generated quite a lot of interest on Facebook and Instagram and I've had a few requests for a video on how to tie them now I'll be using these four european seabass here in the UK but obviously they're going to be killer patterns for many many species around the world yeah particularly species that feed on smaller bait fish which is what these are they're only three inches tied on a size 2 hook so yeah okay so in the vise I've got a size two Sakuma 410 which is stainless steel hook very very strong super sharp point on these so be careful when you're destruction of materials into place because otherwise you'll end up with injuries they're very very good hooks I use these a lot one of my favorite patterns for the simple reason that you you get a higher pistol I find that you get a higher percentage of hook ups with these over normal straight point long shank okay so let's get started I'm gonna start with some Vives 140 thread very very good thread very strong I don't use any other thread these days I'm fed up with thread snapping so this is my my go-to thread right so we're all good all good lay down a short thread base and I'm gonna start sort of show you how to tie the I call the sand smell variation of these these little bait fish it's got the lateral line in if you tie in a different color or a different pattern you don't necessarily have to put a lateral line in but you can if you want it's optional also you'll notice I don't know if you can see might be able to see on the camera that I've actually blended in some very fine flashy dubbing so that in the tail there it's in there anyway and it really adds to the appearance of the bait fish so what I'm gonna do I'm gonna take some of our prey fish fiber that we sell it's a lot like EP fiber but it's actually probably slightly softer than EP fibre knots course so I'm gonna take about a pencil thickness when it's relaxed yeah when it's relaxed about pencil thickness it's ideal for the tail section taper it we've got a nice taper now the overall length of the fly is about three inches give or take a few millimeters so what lengths I'm using like so now I'm going to invert the hook I'm gonna use the next few ties are going to be hollow ties like you would when you're tying a hollow fly so the next piece doesn't want to be as long as the previous piece because as we go along we're going to tie in progressively shorter pieces of material which will taper the fly naturally and also help it to retain its shape in the water which is very important we don't want the fly to spread out too much okay so this piece in so just in front of the blast piece just try and gauge your materials when you when you're new to fly tying it it really is very difficult to to grasp how much material to use but it will come with practice and with this fly because of the techniques that I'm using I can use minimal amounts of fiber to create that lovely profile turn in on the top so and I'm gonna do here is just add some of our star Brite dubbing which is a really fine soft dubbing and that's gonna add a lovely subtle scaly look sparkle to the fly I'm just going to try a little bit of this in at each stage okay so then we fold the pieces back bring you thread forward because we're not gonna tie the material actually down on itself we're gonna make a little thread down in front what I'm doing here is I'm just distributing the fiber to get the profile okay what I do is I tie a sari I whip a thread down in front of the material you can see I've done there is the thread is in front of the material not on top of it squashing it down okay that's a really good technique so it's much like hollow when you tie a hollow fly okay so you can see already we've started to get the profile we need for this fly we're keeping the fly nice and light and also is gonna be very translucent in the water and have a quite a natural appearance to the fish okay so another piece of turn slightly shorter the last one in front of the threat damn wrap it on so it's white just tape ring material again just a tiny bit shorter than the previous piece that we tied in underneath or if it looks messy just when you spread it back we're gonna comb it and blend it together okay I'm spreading the material sort of spreading the material out as I fold it back so it covers all areas and gives you a rounder profile on the on the fly threat down in front again I'm just gonna give this little comb just to blend it bring the fibers together and a bit of moisture and if you twiddle it twist it brings the fibers back together so you can see already starting to get the the profile that we need nice rounded baitfish profile okay so I'm gonna put in one more Oh loti so we've done I'll be three hallo tires all together turn on top so we need to leave enough room at the front here to put a couple of different tires in Starbright dubbing holding the material again ok shall we distribute it nice and evenly underneath on the belly okay so that's a threat damn again in front it's really starting to take shape now as you can see it's gonna get a little bit bulkier closer to the head we go well I'm gonna show you the technique for making the fly nice and slim right okay so basically the basic design of most flies or this type of fly is you want a nice light tail and body for casting and shed in the water but we need to make the head a little bit denser because we do actually want the head to retain a little bit of water which actually adds a little bit of weight for casting and to do that we use a different type of tie finished with the hollow ties now take a length of fiber just past that guys just past the hook finish forming the belly so I want one about two times the size so by the time we've tapered it we've got a piece belly the head type of tie helps you to create that rounded slip it to piece lovely rounded head on bait fish okay forget he's trying to dubbing so you might find it easy with a an empty pen to prove all this back and get it spread out like you do for polo time but I don't depend tube to hand at the moment okay so just a few wraps in front really really taking shape now okay okay so there we are we've made a nice nicely profile bait fish nice in the lateral scope so I take a strand of Magnum flasher boo underneath the thread place just make few wraps another piece the other side so make sure it sits nicely in position the lateral line and then to secure it in place I just fold the excess pieces back and put a few wraps over the top of those like so before you whip finish you can just manipulate the strands of flashabou into position okay it's time to finish this time okay now my fly is still a little bit bulky but to help you keep its shape in the water and to retain a slimmer profile we're actually going to apply some solar arrays flex which is a flexible u4u resin to apply a little bit to a toothpick tail stick you can see I'll put barely anything on there and then what we're gonna do so actually going to stroke this into the fibers in the front part of the fly okay as I said this this is what helps the fly to retain its shape in the water and also we can fowl proof the fly by adding it to the bottom part around the hook stop once it's set it'll stop any fouling now you don't want to apply so much resin that you can actually see it don't really want to be able to see just literally stroking it through the fibers okay like so and then once you think you've got enough shape the fly zap it with the torch okay we're not going all the way back with this as I said it's only really the front part of the fly just help it retain that lovely profile we want the the rear of the fly to have some movement in the water and also of course it helps the lateral line the lateral scale making a flashier boot to stay in position on the front part of the fly the rear part lets you strip it through the water of course they'll waft around and move and give a nice flashy appearance of the fish moving its tail not okay I've got some eight millimeter silver holographic eyes here just really got a thing for them so I'm just gonna add little solar rays ready now I use flex to put the eyes on because it's got that flexibility and durability as I say flex has got that it's got that flexibility basically so when the fish bites down on the fly it all di will move with the fibers rather than snapping off like you get with most hard glues they go brittle and of course they're not the most amount even waterproof so I like to use flex in position and also what I do I'll show you in a minute I add a little bit of flex between the eye itself and the eye the hook over the over the whip finish so sort of forming like a bit of a mask a flexible tab which again helps to keep your in in place longer so what I do you can see I'm just adding a little bit of flex so we've got a little tab of resin between the eye and the whip finish it runs onto the whip finish so it'll flex and move just doing the other side as it comes under pressure should the fish bite down on it okay just has a little bit more to their I will finish the durability on the top alright so there we go there's our little smell pattern bait fish very light castable pattern using the techniques that I've shown you the hollow ties and then slightly different tie for the head to make it a bit denser so it retains the water lovely profile and the the lateral scale is optional you can add that in or leave it out depending on what flyer you're trying to imitate what species of fish you're trying to imitate okay
