the legend of zelda series has been known to be one of nintendo's best and very few games in the series go unnoticed but today that's exactly where we're going though this game may not be remembered as much as wind waker or twilight princess is it's still a very enjoyable game that i can guarantee is known by at least a few people watching this video especially after the announcement of triforce heroes and this game is none other than no not oracle of ages and seasons though those are fantastic games no not freshly picked tingles rosy roopy land and no not that we aren't going there yet i'm talking about the legend of zelda four swords adventures that gamecube game that i always wanted to play with friends but i never got to it because i didn't have a second game boy advance to gamecube connector still regret it and in case you've never heard of or seen four stars adventures it's a sequel to the game boy advance game for swords where you can control four links yourself or have up to four players play at once each player must have a game boy advance system unless playing single player which in that case you can use a gamecube controller the gameboy advance does some pretty cool stuff like when you walk into a dungeon or a house or something similar the action will then take place on the game boy advance think of the game boy as kind of an early wii u gamepad included with the game there was also a second mode called shadow battle and a third one called navi's trackers what you say you've never heard of navi's trackers oh right they removed that from the north american european and australian versions well i think that's good enough reason to make this video so on this episode of beta64 i'm going to talk about the beta of the legend of zelda four swords adventures four swords adventures was first shown at e3 2003 as two different zelda games that would make use of the new gameboy advance connectivity to the gamecube these games were called four swords and tetris trackers tetras trackers pits four players against each other each with their own game boy advance with the goal being to collect as many stamps as possible from tetris pirate crew within a time limit on the game boy advance each player would move around freely on a map searching for tetris crew while on the tv a large map of the area is shown with tetra who is constantly narrating the game and speaking of speaking in this mode many of the characters actually have full voice acting a rarity in any zelda game players are able to choose two japanese characters for their name as well as their gender which is used by tetra who can actually synthesize the names and say them out loud it's quite impressive really single single-player gameplay is also available with the player competing against tingle yo while separate at first in december of 2003 it was revealed that four swords tetris trackers and a new game called shadow battle would all be bundled on the same disc called four swords plus which was released march 18 2004 in japan however before the release in japan tetris trackers was renamed navi's trackers though the game was identical later though it was announced that in north america that the main campaign hyrulian adventure and navi tracker would once again be split up into two separate games with shadow battle status unknown a little while later that decision was changed and in the end it was decided that hyrule and adventure and shadow battle would be bundled together under the title four swords adventures and navi's trackers was never heard from again but before we move on you should know why navi's trackers was canceled in north america it's obvious that the reason was localization and one possible reason are the characters voice synthesis creating a text-to-speech program in japanese is much easier than in english to give you an example in japanese there are only five vowel sounds while in english there are five as well and sometimes y but they can each make multiple sounds take e for instance it can be e as in eve e as in let a as in hey and ooh as in new and that's only one vowel can you imagine how difficult that would be to program come on guys give tomodachi life some credit not only that you can only input two japanese characters for your name in navi tracker and while you can spell many names in japanese with only two characters like sara for sarah you're a lot more limited in english this may be the reason why it was scrapped in north america i mean going to all the trouble of redoing the speech synthesis for the english language would be a ton of work and may not have been considered worth it but in the end that theory falls flat when an early version of navi's trackers was shown to the press it was in english and the names were changed from two japanese characters to one english letter which could be chosen by the player some even remember tetris saying things like let's hear from mrs a meaning that the speech synthesis for the single character was already programmed into the english version sadly i couldn't find any video of this early english build so all we have to go on are these screenshots of the game in action and if you compare these screenshots to the final game you don't have to look very close to notice that many things change and the same thing goes for the game boy advance side of the game as well but in the end if speech synthesis wasn't the reason for removing the game mode what was frankly i don't know maybe at the point the press was shown the early build all the voices hadn't been recorded yet and nintendo may have run into some trouble but this is just speculation so don't take it as fact as far as hyrulean adventure goes there is a very nice video showcasing an early build of the game in the footage we can see quite a few differences first the most obvious is link's sprite the early version of it is based off the link to the past while the final version is based more off wind waker also if you look the world is a lot less detailed in the beta it actually resembles more of an snes game than a gamecube one which is what they were originally basing it on until the big change to wind waker not only that the hud as it seems with every other game was changed as well first off the hearts are shown for each player on the corner of the screen but in the final game it's shown above the players as well now how did i know it's not shown above the player in the beta well because of this part here it shows many links getting hurt but no hearts appear over their heads another thing about this section is interesting the links are collecting rupees instead of force gems like in the final game in fact rupees don't even appear in four swords adventures at all but they did appear in four swords for the game will advance interesting of course that also means that the rupee icon near the counter was changed to force gems when looking at early footage of course you have to pay attention to what's there that's changed but you also have to look for what isn't there like there is no icon of the player's head or an empty space for items and there is also no text to show what place you are depending on how many collectibles you've gathered also apparently magic was planned for four swords adventures because this scene shows a magic meter for each player one final thing to note is at the end of this video it calls the game the legend of zelda four swords for the nintendo gamecube instead of four source adventures or four source plus which places this footage somewhere between june and december of 2003 and i'd bet my money on something closer to e3 now let's move ahead to some unused graphics the first were used for items these three are leftovers from wind waker however these other two were intended to be used the first one is the lens of truth from ocarina of time in majora's mass and the other is the hero shield while the shield is used in the game it's not an action item and thusly has no icon in the final game some may think that these two icons are leftovers as well but if you look at the icons actually used in the other games it's clear that these were redrawn for four swords adventures meaning that they were intended to be used as action items in game there is also one unused enemy in the game's files but just graphics of it there's no functionality left for this poor poor creature from the looks of it two players would pull on each end of the enemy to reveal a weak spot this enemy is actually similar to one that exists in four swords for the game boy advance called a hikun except that this enemy you would simply pull apart in the game boy advance version i don't know exactly why this enemy was scrapped though some suggest that it's because playing as one player you couldn't pull both sides but couldn't nintendo have just done what they did in four swords with hikun where the computer would simply pull the other side automatically i don't know it's a mystery moving on link has two unused graphics one of which is actually the link to the pass sprite used in the early footage we saw before or was it yes they both looked the same but i have doubts that this was the actual sprite used in the trailer because of its file dot name one test now why would they name the sprite they were going to use for the characters test there are two reasons one the original link to the past look was simply a placeholder in the trailer and they weren't intending it to make it look like that at all or two this is simply a test that they imported later which wasn't used in the trailer but instead it was simply used well to test things there's also one other unused sprite of link and this one looks completely different than the last one this link only faces towards the front and has a shield with the letter t on it now what could that mean some think it means tess but i didn't ask the graphic artist so i don't know on the subject of test files this unused file called test sword zero zero is actually a brighter shinier and more detailed sword blade for the pause menu you can definitely see a difference when you see it side by side with a final sword so here are our final unused graphics these are unused map charts that were apparently used for eight different test maps that are no longer in the game what makes these map charts so interesting is that the final game doesn't use maps so it looks like it was originally meant to now that graphics are out of the way let's move on to remove text firstly here's some leftover text from the english version of navistrackers what's interesting is that the text calls the mode tetris trackers which means that the mode was scrapped before it was renamed and speaking of unused text in a text dump of the final game's french translation there are some strings of untranslated english that don't fit into the final game for instance this text here says you can throw your ally to turn him back into a sword so it seems like your allies could have originally been transformed into a sword and the only ally that can be made into a formation are the links so it appears that the links would have first been swords huh another thing this line of text proves that you would have originally used magic with the items like what we saw in the early footage before another unused text implies that force gems were lost when you used an item these two lines of text here show that the master sword was originally planned to be included in the game and this text likely meant for a sign mentions of a place called the forest of sages perhaps the original or alternate name for the lost woods this text says you got two force gems but there isn't a type of force gem in the game that's worth only two a text telling you how to change formations says to do so with the select button but that button is used to change the lead character in the final game and not select formations the last text i'd like to show you says your grave i'm just gonna leave that here there's one unused music track called smw.ast which is appropriate as the theme was used in the special world for super mario world since all of four swords adventure's music is sequenced this track would not have been played anywhere in the game so it looks like it was only used for testing purposes early on but even though it wasn't planned to be used let's listen to it anyway shall we so that's the beta of four swords adventures i would have really loved to have played tetris or navi's trackers when the game first came out it would have been a whole lot of fun to play with friends but i don't hold a grudge and plus if you really want to play it all you've got to do is pick up a copy of the japanese version and a japanese gamecube so how much is that 40 50 bucks oh 80 to 100 well i i think i think i'll pass so this has been beta64 with the legend of zelda four swords adventures beta thanks for watching so um huh
