in today's video we'll be exploring the installation process for this beautiful glass tile backsplash in our kitchen best of all you don't need to be a professional to install it with some basic DIY skills and a little guidance from us you can achieve these stunning results in your kitchen before we dive into the installation process it's essential to prep the kitchen walls by thoroughly cleaning them and inspecting for any imperfections if you notice any bumps or unevenness you'll need to spackle and sand the walls to create a smooth and flat surface next we recommend running the painters tape along the wall to protect the counter and to make cleanup of the bottom tile grout line easier when it comes to adhesive it's critical to use high polymer content thinset specifically designed for glass tile we are using glass tile premium thinset mortar by custom Building Products this type of adhesive provides the necessary flexibility and bond strength be sure to follow the manufacturer instructions to mix the adhesive correctly and to achieve the right consistency this ensures proper tile adhesion using a trowel spread the adhesive evenly on the wall working in small sections be mindful of the drying time mentioned in the adhesive instructions begin at the bottom and work your way up and out creating grooves with the trowel to ensure proper adhesion take your time to make sure the adhesive is applied evenly and with the right amount of thickness as you place the tiles onto the adhesive be cautious not to press them too hard as excessive force can crack the glass watch till the end to learn how to prevent tiles from cracking after installation meanwhile gently press each tile into place ensuring that they are level and aligned correctly if necessary use a tile spacer to maintain consistent gaps between the tiles we are using 1 16 inch traditional flexible tile spacer by cap they usually come in a pack of 300 and can be reused multiple times during the installation for the bottom row of the tiles we cut one of the legs off to create a spacer that can sit flush on the couch owner and hold up the first row we recommend cutting 40 or 50 to start this preparation will save you time later when your thinset is drying on the wall as you progress with the installation remember to periodically check for any adhesive that might have squeezed up between the tiles you can use a spacer to clean the squeeze out between the tiles and a damp sponge or cloth to remove any excess adhesive on the top of the tile ensuring a clean and Polished look continue this process placing one tile at a time and using a tile spacer to maintain a consistent spacing work in small sections and focus on manageable areas at a time this approach helps you maintain control over the alignment and ensure that the adhesive remains workable throughout the process take breaks as often as needed especially if you're working with a large backsplash area the ends of the glass tile are clear so you'll need to trim them out to prevent thinset and grout from being visible we chose to go with the brushed nickel anodized aluminum trim by Schluter they come in a variety of shapes and colors so we can always find the one that fits our design we got the trim to size and secured it with some painters tape at the top As We Lay more rows of tile we will remove the tape and the tile will keep it in place until we're all done another very important step is to use the flat edge of the trowel to clean up any existing thinset around the tiles before you step away can mix mud cut more tile or just take a break this will prevent the excess thinset from drying out and making it harder to lay the next row of tiles now let's talk about cutting the glass tiles glass tiles are very delicate and using the wrong blade will most likely lead to chipping to prevent this ensure you use a diamond blade specifically designed for clotting glass tile we are using a seven inch glass mosaic tile blade by rigid but your wet saw may take a different size of Blade so keep that in mind as you can tell we pre-cut all the tiles we need to start our rows we tried using the tile Snapper tool but it not yield good results so we highly recommend a wet saw for this project to measure for the outlet cutouts we put painters tape on the tile we are using this method because you can't really write on glass tile without anything but markers and those don't always come off so easy we use the tape for the width measurement and Mark the height on the tape with the pencil accounting for the 1 16 inch spacer every time you go to the wet saw make sure you keep it clean of any off cuts and debris with this all ready to go we use a speed square to extend all the line markings and transfer the measurements to the back of the glass tile as well in case we need to see how deep the cuts are from the bottom side of the tile to cut the tile start by cutting each side of the piece you need to cut out and then move from one side to the other by slowly cutting away saw size strips of glass as you can see I started the cut at a 45 degree angle and then lifted the tile upright until it gets to my pencil mark on the back of the tile if you try to make these cuts with the tile laying flat on the saw you will have uneven Cuts in the front or the back of the tile as you can see demonstrated here the cotton lines need to stop here but at the back of the tile the saw stops here this process takes time and patience so don't try to rush through it most importantly wear protective glasses when doing this so you don't end up with a shorter glass in your eye here's what the cutout looks like it's not perfect but it's okay the outlet covers will hide the jagged end when cutting remember that the glass tile with any side longer than three inches is considered a large format and is more prone to cracking take Extra Care while handling and cutting these larger tiles use the wet saw for precise Cuts following your marked lines careful you may have noticed that we switched sides and are now laying tile from the corner out this is to make sure we have a good layout in the corner and it's a lot easier to cut smaller Silvers around the switch at the end than to take a chance on guessing what size tile to cut on the side of the switch and end up short in the corner end like you see in this photo as we are working our way up the wall our pattern is starting to repeat so we are using the laser level to line up the grout lines in rows two and four to find the cut line for this next tile it's getting past all the switches and the outlets give me a boost of confidence so we started to lay tile simultaneously a few rows at a time this made things go a little bit faster at this point it was getting late and living in the condo we could not in good conscience run the tile saw at this time of night to continue which gave us a good natural stopping point for the day unfortunately I did not get this on camera but after cleaning the access thinset around the late tile we went back and double checked all the grout lines making sure that they were mud free and removed the painters tape under the first row of tiles to make sure we had a nice clean grout line at the counter as we removed the tape we've reinserted all the spacers prevent the tile from shifting on us after letting the tile set overnight we removed and cleaned all the spacers so we could reuse them moving forward we mixed up a new batch of thinset and set the laser on the grout lines of the pattern the process in this section is exactly the same all we had to do was cut the tile around the little spacers behind the IKEA cabinets I have to say I'm really impressed with the Ikea mounting system it pulls the cabinet slightly Off the Wall just enough to sneak the tile behind them the installation looks a lot better than it would if we had to cut the tile along the edge of the cabinet you could end up with something that looks just like this at the very top row in the effort to minimize the number of tiles we cut them in half and snuck the half tiles behind the sink cabinet we finished up the top 3.5 rows first to make sure that we had easy access to the space behind the cabinet to the right with the area above the sink complete we moved on to cutting out the rest of the tiles for this wall and instead on them carefully around the wall outlets remember patience and attention to detail are key when laying large glass tile take the time to adjust and align each tile properly following these steps will result in a stunning symmetrical and cohesive glass tile backsplash and just like that the left wall was finished we let the tile set overnight the following day we've begun to put enough support rail for the tiles behind the stove it is fastened with the two inch spec screws into two by fours and leveled with the counter on both ends then just like on day one we use painters tape to protect the granite although the preparation completed we began to lay in tile in the same patient and methodical manner as previous two days we're using the spacers for the third time in this tile job you may have noticed some new LED lighting above my head if you're interested in their installation check out the link in the description below or the card at the end of the video the third day of installation was the most straightforward were only two outlets on the entire wall and a few tiles that needed to be cut if you're wondering where our thinset has turned pink in some places it's because of dry tax spackle we used to smooth out the wall it starts out pink and dries white but when rehydrated it begins to turn pink again just science we had to stop here for the night to allow the tile to set because we were all out of spacers the next day we knocked out the remaining rows under the microwave the final section was a little more difficult because all the cuts we had to make around the outlet and The Limited space we had to work with with the trowel so in order to get the pattern just right we decided to pre-cut all the tiles to get the proper measurements we used painters tape to hold the tiles in place with the spacers in between them once we had all the pieces we applied the mud and installed the remaining tile the tiles were finally up on the wall and they look fantastic I'd like to thank you for sticking with me thus far and present the tip I promised you at the start of the video to keep tiles from cracking after installation glass tiles have a higher degree of movement compared to regular porcelain or ceramic tile they expand and contract at a greater rate so it's critical to leave room for this movement that's why we use color match silicone caulk around the perimeter and in the corners of the entire backsplash additionally glass tiles often have a very delicate backing that can easily be chipped or scratched if not properly handled so it's worth repeating use an appropriate blade when cutting glass tiles and handle them with care to avoid any damage now let's talk about grout most glass tiles require unsanded grout for 1 16 inch grout lines however because different Mosaic glass tiles may have different requirements it's critical to check with the glass tile manufacturer for their specific grout recommendations for your tile using the right grout will produce a long lasting and Visually appealing result groud not only fills the gaps between the tiles but also adds stability and enhances the overall appearance next stick route according to the manufacturer instructions achieving a smooth and workable consistency use a grout float to apply the grout holding the float at a 45 degree angle and pressing the grout into the gaps ensuring full once you've completed the grouting let the grout cure according to the manufacturer's instructions this usually takes 15 to 30 minutes after the curing period take a clean damp sponge and gently wipe the tiles to remove any remaining grout haze be cautious not to disturb the grout lines now we can step back and admire our beautifully installed glass tile backsplash it adds A Touch of Elegance and sophistication to any kitchen to ensure the longevity of our backsplash we will need to properly maintain it by regularly cleaning it with mild non-abrasive cleaner and a soft cloth we hope you gain valuable insights and feel confident and tackling your own glass style backsplash installation and remember your support and engagement meets the
