from television city in Hollywood it's the Martin Short show with special guest he's Martin and Ray Romano Jenna Elfman and Eileen Davidson Jay Leno and Michael Clarke Duncan Deidre Hall and George Segal plus Peter Michael Escovedo in the DCO I'm Michael McGraw filling in for Martin Short legendary songwriter Irving Cohen Oh clear serving you have to get an electrocardiogram where should it's the third time you've guessed it on the show it's the 11th time you've died no the hell well anyway we are here and we're going to be looking at some of the best interviews by our entertainment reporter jiminy glick how does that sound anything and now there's Rick character is a guy who's not afraid to learn his craft even though he happens to be a member of the game Utley actually I believe Jimmy is part Jewish what part I don't know I don't want to know who the hell are you anyway I'm Michael McGraw an Irishman you drunk no I'm not drunk the Irish actually earthy Irving that's a that's an ethnic slur it's at night how would you like it if I made some some racist comment about you being Jewish I wouldn't pay any attention because I know it's coming from a drunk where's Regis anyway anyway ladies and gentlemen let's start out with our first celebrity interview jiminy glick and Steve Martin are we've done yet they just started then hurry the hell up I got appointments I can't be talking to a second banana I've got the talk that I am doing the Brill Building here I write 1,500 songs a week and I'm twenty hundred behind this year then why did you agree to do this because I was told that short would be here not a puppy faced Irishman a dentist a wannabe now get on the Steve Martin I hear he's got some classic for a [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and I'm at the American Comedy Awards with the wonderful Steve Martin Steve how wonderful to see your smiling face how many people have been me by you and your ability to so many things I want to talk to you about maybe we could get to one of them that would be fun you were born in Waco Texas yes I was it's Waco Texas in Waco Texas did you go to college Steve Martin yes I did why did you study I studied philosophy philosophy and I guess that came in handy and watch you when you were blowing up those balloons in your ad yes do you know what philosophy is I want to get back to that your your collector of impressionist art no you aren't you collect art but you are an impression of it a little wallace Beery well I think you're thinking of someone else they do impressions yes you're probably thinking of rich little who does impressions in the old days I want to talk to you about but Wally Boag mm-hmm I knew Jimmy vogue his brother right Jimmy Berg and I were both waiters at Chasen's and the thing that I've always found interesting we connected to you Steve Martin is that when you made the absent-minded waiter Jimmy Burke and I used to say isn't that funny because we're both waiters I'm hearing that you really know how to interview thank you very much you know because of three years I think that many people today are too busy into themselves right well a lot of interviewers well keep going are you going to say they say a lot of interviewers will ask a question and then wait for the other person to answer i think that i think i think that so many people do that but they don't wait I know but you're different because you're able to to fill in that time I've been prepared complements because many people get hostile with me and I don't know what I think it's a very hostile what did you think of what are you how does Hollywood change you've been so long you started off with the wonderful Marty Allen as a partner and he would come on stage and say hello there and you'd given that bluebird how things change for you Steve Rossi first you know my memory of those years is so did you taking ginkgo biloba I've had many things done to myself of the years but that's my favorite thing I haven't injected in your face i injected in my thigh from an old booth hmm you know so many wonderful people in Hollywood through the years Elaine may in a stupor hmm no but vicious with people and angry with strangers no not at all but self-absorbed no call D hon no folks as a human she's not bald but Mike Nichols like difficult no no tends to get angry when you not back no he doesn't he's he's quite a nice man act quite a nice man that's what I've heard where do these evil stories get started about people do you think in Hollywood I think perhaps from you I can't disagree with you I wear it where's that started and then I look bad and they're actually in my news you think it's weird that Suzanne Pleshette it is it's not working more it's a little odd someone have a Kleenex out there you were wonderful in the play art what's Picasso at laughing that's a play I wrote it's about yeah Picasso at the lab and our shield what about Steve Martin is that when you're trying to be real intellectual you work with balloons and of course the wonderful Gypsy Rose Lee but she was a stripper and you were absorber mistress you were a male stripper yes I for a while and was there the right shape have you ever thought of taking someone that's on the road Steve Martin and do stand-up and do stand-up perhaps with balloons actually I I did do stand-up you did do that oh my god where did you do Tanner than Waco Texas all over the United States I didn't know inside well again you've had a wonderful career I have missed so much of it because I've been busy and also some of the titles didn't strike me but I do think you were wonderful and I mentioned the absent-minded waiter because my friend George Maharis you remember George Maharis from wood 66 yes his brother Leon me Harris and I were friends and sometimes we'd go to Roger McDowell's and we were catered there and one time we did we were moving but we didn't some I mean I could say it now cuz it's so long we did mescaline Leon Harris oh good that was why you should do stand-up ste partner why thank you I want to thank you for being so brave and B's so understate brave is a good word so much of the work that I haven't cared to see uh-huh Jimmy play the show is not I would wear the American Comedy Awards with mr. Steve Russell [Music] [Applause] stay tuned for Ray Romano when we come back where the hell is this set they took down this set I have it done those sheep we're on at five in the morning and they take down this set this is where the shorts got some pull here on jiminy clicks Lalla would four we're talking to the star of everyone loves Raymond Ray Romano well the way it is Everybody Loves Raymond it's like I Love Lucy but it's not I Love Lucy it's I being replaced by everybody and Lucy being replaced by Raymond the wonderful Lucy who I knew I used to play backgammon with her she she would get feisty all redheads do especially when they're wearing a wig and she would hook the whole backgammon table of her and we'd be stunned a whole bunch of us I wondered how does the comedian like Lucille Ball and I could say the same thing to you Ray how do you handle the pressure of being loved by America I balance it off cuz I don't like I hate myself enough for everybody that's wonderful I wish you'd write your thoughts down on paper are you were born in Queens New York yes and Queens is is one of the boroughs of New York yep that's a Ray Romano and we're one pronounced Romano Romano yeah what is that is that that's Lithuanian so Terry it's Italian yeah you must have gone up thing I want pizza I want pasta with red sauce or a cheese of your choice I said those things and I get I got those things that one guy and I suppose they're about 14 or 18 siblings running around because correct me if I'm wrong people of your type tend to have many children well I got two brothers so well that killed that theory let me are you scared of this joyful thing I'm not even aware that it's here it's success you know so I'm not afraid of the disappearing funk I didn't sunk in yet what makes brain so appealing does that make you next door how do you respond to your fans ray Romero correct them when they call me that it's Romano Lamont yeah and that is an Italian enjoying they yeah too much but a joyful a joyful wait nothing is more fun than falling into sleep you were a full-time full-time Acrobat and you also did stand-up what was Johnny Carson like when you weren't were you scared was a rain room you know scared when you're on Johnny Carter that I was very scared of that Johnny was me no Johnny no he wasn't mean to you he wasn't me to be said a couple things but that aloof yeah I can't my dressing room after and every stand-up comedian you know that's their dream to be on Johnny to be on Johnny Carson show on the show yeah book someone finish school everything in a kite everything is everything in a kite mean it's a phrase that one of my twin set had twins and I asked the one he wanted for his birthday one of them said everything and the other one said everything and a kite and do you have any children I have three sons and one girl I wish I had a girl are we trying we keep trying and trying apatite in that direction if you can imagine you know I've had I certainly I think I have an appetite I get the points in life really but when it comes late at night and that's just suddenly and before I know it the this pie is off this shirt is open and and so anyway I can picture thank you for being want to thank you for being someone who I wanted you to be often you meet these people and they're just idiots and then you are someone who just simply lives up to every expectation go back you're not jaded you're not dull you read these things and they're wrong thank you very much Jiminy Glick it's Lalla wood and I want to say thank you to every day of your life taking the bus to work early however you'd get to work I've gotten it like a couple times I get teri garr sometimes oh I see Lana Turner the wonderful Lana Turner take it native Los Angeles means that you were not of an Indian background but in fact you were born here many people come to Los Angeles and yet you just people who come to LA who think LA and then they do this thing you know I was born and raised here so I just kind of am and you're from LA oh so you're a native right right what goes through your head when I say the word bow die nothing like then bow tie that's award ceremonies but if you said bowdie bowdie bowdie and something goes through my head which is my husband and lots of love and laughter Gerson bowdie bowdie bowdie bowdie sure has Elfman Elfman yeah any relation to Danny Elfman yeah he's buddy's uncle who's Danny Elfman and he's related to Bodhi yeah Tony's uncle so he would say hi uncle Danny and he'd say hi little boat he calls me the littlest Elfman cuz you're so tall how tall are you coming out five ten you know where you remind me of just a little bit later how wonderful Richard Dreyfuss I love Richard Dreyfuss who's Richard Dreyfuss did you ever see jaws no I meant oh yeah I meant to the last thing I really saw and focused on was route 66 the old one cousins big George Maharis freaked I thought he was very underrated but no I never saw jaws and we're in jester holland's opus you were in Jaws Richard Dreyfuss so the cast of jobs what the Jenna Elfman Richard Dreyfuss and a Holland's Opus krippendorf tribe was Jenna Elfman and Richard Dreyfuss jaws was a different set of people and then mr. Holland's Opus is another movie with a different set of actors and you took him to our tribe there's a film that is about a tribe mm-hmm that's wonderful wonderful Oh similarity you have a pug named good of you yes I do I have two pugs now my best friend in high school was named pug [Music] thank you thank you thank you so much and there's so much I wanted to get to I wanted to get to Hollywood I a gardener been using outside of the hospital and I ended up with Dutch elm disease in my car well I've been using a mustard okay which is just heighth mustard and I put it on and put it on if I don't for this wonderful studio to lose the one group I see the kitchen huh or the bedroom anything at cookin [Music] up next Eileen Davidson don't go away I once cornered Eileen heckard a big Biloxi P there it she was dressed as Little Bo Peep and you should have seen my staff [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] hello I'm jiminy glick and the show is Lalo wood and I'm talking - Y&R yes The Young and the Restless Eileen Davidson hi jiminy you really are so wonderful bang and you know who you look like you have a bit of monitor the monitor of later on Peyton Place colder well I would say the lovelier a lot of turn but the smile and the makeup that's that would make Luci proud yes I think David why just why guess not I think Davidson seemed like a winner what is that indeed so many of the other beauties of Hollywood not have but what it would what is it survivor technique lots of ass-kissing [Laughter] and you have the wagon the full Lucy multiple thank you want to do Days of Our Lives at the same time wanting them to be on Y&R dad I know I didn't Davidson get confused with all the characters she plays I managed to separate them yeah because they're coming hello hello Troy no no no no for the big one it's in the bottom bureau drawer tell Dixie to hide the big one from the boys thanks yeah we are interviewing me right yes we are but enough distance sometimes songs me and when they phoned me and it's an emergency you play the character of Ashley Abbott right I was actually a bit different from Eileen Davidson she's a chemist she's a chemist and I'm not a chemist you're not a chemist I'm an actor who's Ashley a chemist the character you play on Young and the Restless young and the rest yeah me confused almost I was Days of Our Lives per second there my problem is that I have sometimes there's so much of my plate sometimes I look at my plate and say my god is George Wendt dining terribly full you were in the film house and sorority oh boy we're gonna go that far house of sorority horror movie horror movie kind of generic kind of horror Jo Jo Rho and and you were sorority a house that was on a Sorority Row you're quick baby yes it was on our row wonderful you have so much of an end life quality bright or perhaps I don't know if you've ever gotten Lana Turner older Lana Turner I've gotten that just recently yes interesting you were in Jon Voight film eternity right and you were wonderful in that thank you and your character was well I play two characters and two characters in that now did Jon wear the white scarf and that or is that just in the office he wore a white scarf but not be white God but he played two characters one with the scarf about john-boy is it's about me my interview is with hiding Davidson the show is Lalla would fun thanks it has been fun yes excuse me hello we'll just take a second dear excuse me I'm she's getting upset Daisy she's getting upset and yet I have to take this why is that suddenly I'm the bad person [Music] hello I'm jiminy glick the show with jiminy glick la la would and I'm wonderfully happy to say the wonderful pop cars in Hollywood you know it's cramped I've I've went to a friend's soiree and he's to have dinner over the weekend and I must've eaten I wanted a pastry veil the chairs they're getting so small now I cut it back where it gets awkward as when you stand up and it goes with you oh my goodness you were in silver bears yes yes how does the Jay Leno get to be in silver bear I would imagine it was tough back then for Jay Leno who knew a guy who who got me this this part and when you develop the character for silver bears like junior Jay like silver bears I was playing myself but younger which was not really that much of a stretch then because I was myself and younger and did you have a Scottish accent because I would imagine you'd be very good no actually I just had the normal accent that I wonderful is it true you had your stomach not stapled but in fact Bobbie pinned yes yes you had baked buns to make the food won't go more in a way to make it work in a kiss curl that is you had this girl and what's that make it work oh hey you do what you have to do because you seemed wonderfully fat yeah I've had liposuction in every opening and I dream it can be painful you've been doing the Late Show now for seven years no actually I do the Tonight Show I do the time show The Late Show is on CBS that's Dave Letterman Show I do that today if you're doing that if he's not Letterman and I feel badly about that Paul Shaffer where'd you first meet him again Paul does not work for me but I met him the first actually I met him when I when we first went to CBS all right as you know I was doing the show after The Tonight Show and that didn't work out and I went to CBS for a huge salary and then Paul I took Paul with arguing there's so much I'm like I'm not gonna argue with him I'm just gonna agree you love cars I've always thought of you cars and Gunsmoke it's 21 years oh I love darkness do you know that I used to service and of my nightly service service the tires tube and the bike Amanda Blake real knew my brother Richie and Richie knew Amanda Blake's sister real so it was the heavens the Barry it was like a strange kind of journey where there were curves and left's no and you're left-handed and so is Desi Arnaz jr. which is it I don't want to really go into what I know and there's so much I want I want about the Doritos but sometimes it's all confusing well I want to say thank you to the wonderful it's been a treat the show is the Late Show and he's been doing CBS CBS CBS and I want to take think I'm gonna say and say hello to and please say hello to Marty I will [Music] [Applause] stay tuned for Michael Clarke Duncan after these messages [Music] [Applause] [Music] and we're lucky enough to be talking to the star of The Green Mile with mr. Tom Hanks say hello to Michael Duncan you missed the most important you you prepared in such well you have my whole thing right when your folk well I mean here I'm thinking like working on Bulworth woman with wonderful Warren Beatty oh my goodness you were in the Players Club that is like a female you were in Armageddon Bruce Willis big bully on the set oh all the time yeah who cares if I have hair and I couldn't do that that's what I'm mad about cuz I arrived one second late and Michael took my head off now why is that maybe you can help me out could it be because you were low man on the totem pole I think the problem is many people who set for example for example you're working married with children yeah oh yeah you know then you know what the thing is I haven't done a lot of work that's true but you're not supposed to look at that take that and turn that right there are we talking right now I'll shoot my resume is an extensive like Tom Hanks two-time Academy Award winner big deal it was me that carried this move and I think you should point that out let me save something that I think you know you made me throw my notes on the grill you see Armageddon it was last some of the blockbuster my goodness Armageddon that Bruce Willis this will has been a flick Steve Buscemi all it's part of the Gen Y thing that everyone are you saying yourself my goodness he mumbles and is the ultimately dull well you know that's my problem because I thought you should be have I have fighting attention-deficit okay well I'm trying to be nice what's your point Michael Clarke Duncan right now you're making me very uncomfortable let me ask you something Clarke why do you think that Michael let me Michael my Clark Mountain Duncan let me just simply add when when when Brad Pitt and Gweneth Paltrow suddenly we felt very vulnerable but then before you know it tear me up Clark hear me out the Bob Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow for we're talking about the Green Mile that's the film that you're appearing in with yes yes that's what I'm saying Duncan Clark Michael no Clark Duncan say this say that Michael Clark Clark that's this who's Michael Clark in Armageddon Armageddon's on no I was an arm again Armageddon last year and now I'm in The Green Mile I appeared so years ago go Armageddon out of here [Applause] like to work with Tom Hanks or something I'm really uncomfortable cause you haven't asked anything about my movie I would like to ask you something about time okay get to it Tom Hanks has a reputation of being obnoxious to the low people the low people what's he therefore obnoxious to you you know how much time I put in this movie let me guess a week three months and you see but that was me didn't nobody will have anything under my eye if that was Lee can't you understand any Davis just do it she used to rip hairs out of her nostrils above my picture please say hello it's been Lana wood it's Duncan Michael [Applause] [Music] we'll be back with jiminy glick and Deidre Hall after these messages I once wrote the nope thing theme for the great John Hall when he was starring in a musical adaption of Rama Sophie Tucker had to set a lips on her I remember one time [Music] hello I'm jiminy glick and the show is Lana wood we're on the set of Days of Our Lives like the sands through the hourglass live my favorite of all is Eid Rahall and she's to my right or left depending on where you're from you are simply timeless thank you the show started in 1965 and you at that time played the character Rochelle correct well I didn't actually know I didn't begin in 65 and when the show began no I came on in 78 and I've always played Marlena Evans Marlena Evans Marlena Evans tell me a little bit about Deidre Hall about the when Luke and Laura were married and you were Taylor old violet eyes herself it must have been wonderful I'm yet extremely sad to see these two characters marry that that wasn't those of our lives that was our general husband Luke and Laura are on General Hospital and and you've appeared in love letters on stage I did how did you know that stacy is my assistant sometimes she gets things hung but once in a while she's correct I've not seen love letters often done only once in Las Vegas with Siegfried and Roy but I would imagine your love letters must have been very very invigorating in because you played both roles swim well that I did on I did on Days of Our Lives our lives is the soap opera yes and you play I play doctor Marlena Evans Marlena Evans does she have any siblings she has a twin sister she has an evil twin it's hard to believe I know in daytime deep do you play both parts or is it like they get someone who kind of looks like a Deidre Hall and then she is the sister and then your and then she's not this no you know in fact I have a twin sister in real life and and she's a teacher she's Marlena no no she no she came in and she played Samantha Evans my evil twin your evil twin wonderful that must have been fun she was born on Halloween yes we both were you both because they were identical twins your twin tell me about the feeling of any a Soap Opera Digest award you're nominated and you sit there and you're shaking and you must be nervous you must be scared it it's hard what is it's hard being in that room what in the in the room where they televised in the award shows and not knowing Jawad show step up guide us to works oh they're wonderful what's that like being there you it's awkward it's awkward because you're never quite sure if envelope and they say the winner is Samantha Evans that must be quite a feeling who is Stephen saw Stephen Sommers is my husband your husband on the show no he's my husband in my real husband I realize your real husband in real life mhm and he is married to your sister no my sister my real sister in your life is married to a man named Tom jingler and I'm gay Tom Tom gangly hungee is my twins tongue dangle Tom that must be wonderful to say to your brother-in-law brother-in-law Tom pie come and have a slice we first met at the years ago you're wearing a Nolan Miller gown silver with a hint of a boa I remember you like that well I'm not this is I kept thinking because I have my wife Dixie wears it sometimes and I'm one year of the eldest boy Morgan put it on and we were confused but he was doing a joke he's he's an just kid playing oh and this has been a joint I want to thank you thank you thank you can Jim in all the years that you've given and the joy and and I'm getting emotional I feel like you know because you're wonderful you really are one book to go through the stands of an hourglass there goes the the hourglass [Music] jiminy glick and George Segal when we return that's what I call a team two members of the tribe [Music] that's a wonderful wonderful show just shoot me and with the wonderful it's a George Segal or George Segal it is actually Segal you've been in Hollywood for so many years you see I have this thing about being touched we have a thing about being tight yes you made a touch of clap in English and you were American and Boris and yet you're two worlds combined and didn't she win the Academy Award Lynn Redgrave for that film George Tucker yes she did what's she fun Flynn yes yes enormous fun you know she has sisters and a brother chorus I knew her father Michael Redgrave did you really yes I did now we've done so many things I'm really not interested in but I've highlighted a couple of those didn't treat me the young doctors the Year 1961 did you follow the script or was it just simply off the top of your head because it didn't look very professional you know what I'm hurting you and and Chuck Connors or in the same way hated to be touched and yet you've done excuse me mister good it is on the show Lala would and I think it's what's indicated so trust me there's not a tremendous market what is king rat well this guy was the king of his domain he was a rat and a rat sorry hold on oh hi Dixie how are you well he can pick up the suit he can pick up the suit when it's ready then no no she's the worst you'll have the people over okay calculate a baby mr. Glueck I've got a show I've gotta show you do you're still living in Hollywood yes yeah what are you what's your show it's called just shoot me Oh with that little angry David's fake yes he was once very rude to me because he met me ah he was interviewed on the show yeah do you have a moment I please don't touch me mr. Blake I don't want to talk about David Spencer oh you worked in a wonderful film with them you don't need anybody any air mr. quick what would you like to say George well I wanted to say that that David Spade in fact talks about you all the time it's jiminy glick this and jiminy glick back so I was really looking forward to this interview David Spade has an attitude problem and I don't not saying that it's something that exists all the time but you have to understand when you take the lifts off he's a very tiny little thing there's an attitude anchor and that's not his real hair so all those pieces fit together and finally it's Linda hunt after a sauna so you're not you have to understand his rage and he hasn't turned it on me because he made accusations because I am married with four children he didn't buy that I thought it was food and I thought it was shallow I have indeed four sons Morgan Mason Matthew and Modine because I'm tremendous fan of Matthew Modine work so we named the last two after him they were twins let me talk about you the fate of Virginia Woolf please and I imagine she came onto the set and those violet eyes and I was still you know for many years I was upset because Eddie Fisher it seems so right and then it ended why do you think Hollywood is so unfair to people like Eddie Fisher do you know that Elizabeth Taylor has a double set of eyelashes which help with the violet eyes were you aware of that I'm aware she has a set but I didn't realize her eyelashes and and you work with her each day and what she moody bitter angry no no none of those the under decree no I found her to be completely professional I totally agree with that well it's it I hear you flub your lines and I'm sure I know what that's about and you put oh my god you grow up in Bucks County that's so funny because my best friend growing up is named buck I want to say thank you George Segal not much of this is usable but it still [Music] don't do that I want to thank you for being who you are and being a brain and being one of the great spirits of Hollywood judge how do you like it now mr. Glick where'd he go the show is column and this one George the cow [Music] we'll have more with Irving Cowan right after this well Irving I enjoyed that how about you of course you did your half in the bag give me a see a bouncy seat I'm here with a guy who likes his booze he don't know the difference between and Jews we've been watching that Blake who knows you scratched it but I'm working for peanuts and that ain't so good that's a bad CD or whatever the hell else you want to put in there at that time you know clear the great thing about el chaltén was that he was one of the most obnoxious people in the world but the audience never knew it they loved me he was me he always smelled the pastrami cuz that made his vocal cords limber really like Limburger cheese he could sing a song again he'd get on one knee yeah Irving oh he's gone again clear Cornel Wilde was once angry at me because he wanted to do a musical but he couldn't sing I said to him take some lessons when the great succeed and he wouldn't listen to me what
