I hadn't heard of it until after release. Ended up playing after seeing a stream. Having zero expectations definitely helped. It was also just a really pleasant experience. Cool combat, in-depth yet not overwhelming customisation, decent story, amazing visuals.

I think it mastered the open world pretty well. NPC stuff is extremely basic, but I like that it switches between combat and really peaceful moments.

I just started getting into Act 2 of the story. This game is already in my top 5 all time best games list. It is relentlessly jaw dropping in all the best ways.

hey folks it's me jake baldino it's the end of 2020 so of course we're going to talk about some of our favorite games of the year 2020 was a year it was decent for video games at least i will say that despite everything going on we got a consistent stream of some pretty solid games new consoles new graphics cards if you can get your hands on them and generally just a lot of things to talk about we had a lot of fun talking about stuff with you guys and now it all comes down to this the picks for game of the year we're keeping it a little more low-key this year and what we wanted to do was focus on you guys so hopefully you guys caught it we only put out the ballot for a limited time but all of the games we're going to talk about this year are voted on by you guys so i do want to say something real quick i always say it as a disclaimer these are your choices this is the game ranks communities choices if you don't like them that's how it works by design there are different games for different people people like different genres that's how it is take this as some recommendations maybe a game that wasn't on your radar that's all we can really do here right let's have fun talking about games so let's just jump in and first talk about best score and music this is a category that's important near and dear to my heart just because sometimes with the game the music can like make or break it it's the same with movies like sometimes music can just really sell something coming in at third place with 15.9 percent of your votes is the final fantasy 7 remake personally that's my number one choice but excellent choice there in second place with 18.5 percent of the votes we have spider-man miles morales another excellent choice uh for using both the score uh the spin on the previous spider-man ps4 game and also some sick license tracks that just really really worked well but of course coming in at first place with 43.6 percent of the votes it's due maternal what more is there to say other than that mick gordon and team's score and music treatments for this game just really ramps up that intense intensity and just sells the [ __ ] out of it it's a great shooter with some even better music behind it but let's move on and talk about some story stuff let's talk best narrative this is of course the plot the story the thing keeping you going the characters the dialogue there was a lot of it this year and it seems like votes came down to uh two big ones but let's break down all three in third place with eight percent of the votes it's again the final fantasy vii remake i think it was excellent did a really good job telling the story giving a little bit of a fresh spin on it if you know what i mean and all of us here obviously recommend it if you haven't checked it out already now the big two uh first with 32.8 percent of the votes in second place is the last of us part two a very lengthy very drawn out but very interesting story interwoven between two characters uh but to the number one choice in first place with 46.9 percent of the votes it's ghost of tsushima which i say definitely wins points for simplicity in a lot of ways the fact that a lot of the side quests still kind of integrated into jin sakai's journey it made sense but the main plot's point of focusing just around a few select characters that really kind of hammered home the emotion especially the deeper you got into it now next up the category is best ongoing game this could mean any type of game from a multiplayer game to a an early access game uh to a game that's just consistently being updated worked on stuff like that you know like marvel's avengers and anthem both of which didn't make the cut here but anyway first off interestingly enough i i do want to point out with these strides fortnite has taken this year in terms of consistently providing stuff for players you guys gamerx viewers only voted like 9.5 of it at number five so i guess not a lot of you guys out there like fortnite who watch these videos but now we know uh let's get down to third place the winner is apex legends at number two with 28.5 of the votes it's call of duty warzone another one that for me genuinely surprised me as someone burnt down on call of duty and burnt down on battle royale it was pretty well done but coming in close squeaking by in first place it's no man's sky it won with 29.5 percent of the vote it's won awards in in previous videos we've done in previous years in terms of it just becoming an excellent game after all this time now say what you want paying 60 back when that game released was a massive disappointment we didn't get the game we were promised but the way i look at it i've said it in other videos man this game becoming good instead of being casted to the wayside and forgotten isn't net positive and the gaming world is better for it because there's another cool space game out there to go play next category is best indie there was a lot of indie games this year unfortunately i didn't get my hands on too many of them so i'm probably going to run and play a lot of the games that were nominated but in third place we have carry on this one with 8.4 this is when you play as an evil monster in a two-dimensional plane and uh wow it is gory as hell at number two the surprise hit of the year with 38.1 percent of the votes it's fall guys ultimate knockout i think this is an excellently simple premise that is a ton of fun and i think it deserves all the praise it gets and i'm excited to see that a lot of you guys out there dug it too but the first place winner for best indie game is hades with 40.7 percent of the votes and wow this is the newest super giant game it's been in early access for a while but it's now in full release and people are freaking loving it i gotta be honest i have not played this one but i really feel like i'm missing out but congrats to hades for winning this next up the category is best vr or ar game personally vr is very close to my heart so i'm very excited about this category but the third place winner is dreams a game that we really thought was very cool and very interesting and had a lot of potential when it first released and it seems like a lot of you guys have clung to it too with it scoring 9.8 percent of the votes in second place with 18.2 percent of your votes it's star wars squadrons which i absolutely highly recommend as a die hard super biased star wars fan but also because it's like a full-fledged game with single player and multiplayer that also has full-fledged vr support go check it out if you love star wars it's not even full price but with 59.9 percent of the votes the first place winner of best vr or ar game is half-life alex this probably isn't surprising anyone and i stand behind this one it's one of my favorite games of the year and it's also really good because it's worth pointing out that like valve is back they literally just made another half-life game no compromises and it's really cool unfortunately you have to have vr to experience it but still it's worth it next up we have best action game i want to talk about actually all five like placed winners here because there's some interesting stuff it's really cool to see at number five with 2.1 percent of the votes streets of rage 4. you don't really see a lot of mainstream audiences take to a game like that anymore but it is an excellent return to form for the classic series and then at number four you guys gave some love to neo too with 6.8 percent of the votes but now down to the actual placements in third place with 8.1 percent of the votes the winner is half-life alex we love it here you get that now in second place with 11.7 of the votes we have hades another good one clearly the game is loved for its action and i think we're going to hear a lot more about this game in 2021 but last but certainly not least with 67.9 percent of the votes in first place best action game do maternal it's probably because of all the shooting i don't really know next up is another great category it is best rpg or role-playing game for you grandmas out there in third place the winner is yakuza like a dragon with 9.1 percent of the votes it's really nice to see a yakuza game score a top three spot i think more and more these games are becoming more mainstream they deserve all the recognition they can get and i'm happy it's here now in second place with 29.2 of the votes it's the final fantasy 7 remake i'd say another rpg and a very nice jrpg worthy of the number one spot but the first place winner believe it or not despite all the headlines and some of the technical issues 44 percent of you game ranks viewers out there who voted which was over 20 000 votes by the way voted for cyberpunk 2077 as our best rpg this is one that although i really enjoyed the game like i don't think i personally agree with the winner but that's how it goes let's argue in the comments now next we got best fighting game in third place we have street fighter 5 champion edition that scored 7.7 percent of the votes and then in second place with 8.8 percent of the votes it's one punch man a hero nobody knows but the first place winner with 74.8 percent of the votes you guessed it it's mortal kombat 11 ultimate which the expansion and then all the characters and that little bit of campaign everything this game has provided this year absolutely makes it worthy of a spot even if it's a game that released prior the new stuff is totally worth it and i support you guys for voting for that next up let's talk about our pc gamers because this is best sim or best strategy game and this is mostly relegated to pc games but we got some good stuff here because in third place with ten point seven percent of the votes it's desperados three a really surprising cowboy game that doesn't play like you'd expect you should definitely check it out but in second place with 18.9 percent of the votes we got my real nerds here voting for crusader kings crusader kings 3 is pretty awesome especially if that's your type of thing it's very specific but it's worth it but at number one with 58.9 of the votes it's flight simulator an incredible game an incredible looking game it's coming to consoles next year i believe on xbox series x but this is a pc gamers game damn it you need the power you need the setup and all that really makes it worth it and especially because this is a game that's going to be expanded upon for years to come as an entire platform just like the previous games have we're coming down to the final topics here this next one is best sports or racing game in third place with 7.9 percent of the votes we have fifa 21. shout out to our european friends i assume a lot of that is you guys careful with those micro transactions anyway uh in second place with 23.2 percent of the votes we have dirt 5 an absolutely epic racing game did i just really use the word epic just throw me in the dumpster but seriously a really good racing game absolutely love rally racing games and this is a hell of a good one but in first place with 53.7 percent of your votes you guys out there chose tony hawk's pro skater one and the fantastic remake thank you i know you guys really wanted to do me a solid here and vote for that and i appreciate it i'm never gonna forget it it's pretty much one of my favorite games of the year so thanks for showing up next up best multiplayer i think this year was important for multiplayer whatever the game may be because so many of us were kind of isolated or disconnected a little internet connection definitely helped right in third place with 12.2 of the votes we have animal crossing new horizons which absolutely definitely stole the show for the earlier parts of 2020. it was a smash hit definitely a cult phenomenon definitely also saw a lot of mainstream success and we got to commend him for that in second place with 20.9 percent of the votes judging from all the winners we got some call of duty fans here because call of duty warzone takes the win but of course the real win is first place with 48.7 of the votes you guys chose among us a game that didn't even release this year this game is actually pretty old but as you guys probably know it's become the most popular game and has seen a ton of success and massive player count and also just a very cool concept worthy of the praise maybe i'll see some of you guys on there but now we have to talk about the final category the big one the most important one game of the year now of course it's worth emphasizing that everybody has a different game of the year i've said this a million times but gaming has become massive and bringing in more people more money more different properties than movies it is the biggest entertainment thing so there are so many different people playing games and so many different people loving different types of genres statistically almost everyone's going to argue over game of the year it's how it goes we're going to announce the top five things that you guys voted on here but i do want to point out something real quick a lot of people did write in assassin's creed valhalla and spider-man miles morales in the write-in section uh that was significant we wanted to make sure those were also highlighted but now game of the year in fifth place we have animal crossing new horizons with 5.8 percent of the votes in fourth place with about 13 of the votes we have doom eternal in third place with 16.6 percent of the votes some people are going to be really happy and some people are going to be really mad it's the last of us part two but coming down to the final two another surprising upset second place is cyberpunk 2077. cyberpunk 2077 has 17.8 of the votes and judging by you guys and the amount of times you voted and showed up for cyberpunk 2077 despite the fact that the game has a lot of problems and i think cd projekt red has lost some public trust in some avenues you guys ultimately seem to really like the core game i mean we talked about it enough this year but there you have it second place choice game ranks community cyberpunk 2077 but now let's get down to the final thing first place official game of the year by you guys at 33.2 percent of the votes the winner is you guessed it ghost of tsushima i think people really fell in love with its new take on the open world genre and how it wasn't bloated it's meaningful side quest it's fun engaging sword play it's cool cast of characters it's beauty everything about it a game like that a game that created a game that fun which i think gets better as it goes at first i actually wasn't super crazy about it but the more i played i fell in love with it i think a lot of other people feel the same way because how many of you guys 33.2 percent of you guys voted for it yes a divisive year as any other but hey video games swords it's a perfect mix thank you guys for getting to the end with us i appreciate you guys watching a more low key year we usually go kind of weird or above and beyond we wanted to just kind of chill relax have a cup of coffee and talk games with you guys so thank you for coming clicking the like button helps but we also got to say from all of us here at the game ranks team even though none of them are in this room right now because i'm working at night seriously none of us could do this like this is our job but like we have a lot of fun doing it and we couldn't be doing any of this without you guys watching and we are extremely grateful for that so cheers for real but thank you guys for watching we will see you guys next year 2021. i gotta get used to saying that i'll see you on the friday show i'll see on the before you buy videos i'm jake baldino thanks for watching see you guys next time pizza's on me you
