hey everybody Mike Iaconelli back out here in the shop and I've got a great topic for you today and it's a timely one - it's early spring we're breaking out of the winter we're heading toward the spawn and you know what that means pre spawn bass pre spawn fishing and I'm here today in the shop to talk to you about my six top lures for pre spawn bass fishing I want to go over each category one by one and break it down for you and tell you why they're so good during this pre spawn period before I do that let me explain to you a little bit about what the pre spawn is pre spawn is a time when fish are in transition they're leaving their winter spots they're leaving their areas where they've wintered and they're migrating toward where they're going to eventually spawned when we're talking about water temps in the pre spawn we're talking about anywhere from the high 40s 47 48 49 all the way up through the high 50s once it hits that 60-degree mark we're going to transition to the spawn phase but pre spawn it's right now and the fishing can be tricky but when you find them you can find them in groups the other great thing about the pre spawn is they're migrating they're thinking about heading to the spawning flats but they're also thinking about eating they have to eat up and feed up because when they spawn that's going to be second fiddle so they're really eating this time of the year let's look inside the box and I'm gonna go one by one in the categories and you know usually I break my categories into three finesse and three power but today I'm going to go for or power fishing lures and to finesse and let's start with one of my favorites in the pre-spawn and this one is a crank bait a crank bait in the pre spawn and there's a few reasons this crank bait so good the one is you can cover a tremendous amount of water remember in the pre spawn they're not a lot of singles but when you find them they're grouped up so we can cover a lot of water and search the water column really effectively a couple rules for crank bait fishing and the pre spawn one is go with a crank bait that has a tighter wobble these are two of my favorite we've got a Rapala shad wrap this is a number five in a color called demon we've got a six dt by Rapala dt six in his face and it's another good one this has a super tight this has a moderate wobble moderate to tight wobble they're both great baits when that water temperature is high 40s to high 50s or low 40s the high 50s if you look at these baits you know you can look at the bill angle and when that bill angle gets straighter in line with the nose of the bait you see that look how that bill angle is is a lot straighter it's not angled way down but it's almost straight in line with the nose that's a good indicator that that baits gonna have a tighter wobble the other great thing about these two lures is their balsa in the pre spawn I shy away from loud rattling crank baits I go toward science silent or very subtle rattles in these baits once you know you find those fish the other great thing about this crank bait is you make them react this crank baits diving and swigging and when that bait hits off something deflects off something it triggers a reaction of reaction bite so last rule on crank baits my first pick pick a lure that runs as deep or a little deeper than the water you're fishing if you're fishing in five foot of water a dt six is perfect if you're fishing in nine foot of water a dt 10 and so on and so forth okay so tight wobble crank bait number one number two you got to have this in your pre-spawn arsenal that's right lipless vibration also known as a rattle trap I don't know if there's a lure that is caught as many pre-spawn bass as that thing right there but it's another lure like a lipped crank bait that triggers a reaction bait a reaction bike the great thing about lipless and they come in a lot of different sizes from a quarter all the way up to an ounce the 3/8 and 1/2 ounce are my two favorite sizes the great thing about lipless is it sinks so you could actually control the depth just by letting the lure fall in places that have vegetation and places where they're sparse cover I don't know if you can beat this thing a lot of ways to fish it the warmer that water and the pre spawned the faster you retrieve the colder that water if it's still in the high 30s low 40s slow it down yo-yo retrieve is one of my favorite which is a pull and fall pull and fall pull and fall great great bait for covering a ton of water is a lipless it makes the fish react cover ton ton of water and you can snatch it from vegetation to elicit that reaction strike number 2 lipless vibration number 3 and this one is special in the pre spawn especially when the water is mid-50s or cooler starts to lose a little bit of effectiveness as it gets into the high 50s but in the pre spawn when it's cold to about the mid 50s nothing beats a suspending jerk bait the one limitation of a suspending jerk bait is water color this is going to work in ultra clear to stain water once you get into muddy chocolate milk ugly colored water it loses some effectiveness the reason why is because this is a very visual bait the fish have to see it a lot of difference is spending jerk baits out there I'm a big fan of the Rapala shadow wrap and shadow wrap shad both of them come in a shallow build model that's good for fishing at three to six foot zone and they have a deeper build model that deeper bill is great for that eight to ten to twelve foot zone so again pick a bait that runs sort of in the water column that you're fishing you know what are the keys and jerk bait fishing and by the way this is a suspending jerk bait is the cadence and the pause the cadence and the pause and the cadence basically means the rhythm at which you twitch the bait and here's what I want you to do this is a general good general rule of thumb the colder the water the slower your twitches and the longer your pauses the warmer the water if your water is up to mid 50s to almost 60 the faster your twitches and the shorter your pauses it's a real good rule of thumb but here's the second rule of thumb when you're fishing uh suspending jerk bait change your cadence every 15 to 20 cast until you find what the fish want it's a real good rule of thumb one last little pin on that lay that little blade on the belly hook this is a little VMC hybrid treble give that a try on a suspending jerk bait adds a little bit of Flash helps those fish key in on that belly hook you get a better cup ratio when you use that alright here we go we're going to go to number four and I'm going to count this one as a finesse presentation even though it's a jig and it's sort of a power fishing lure the way that I fish it in the pre spawn is with finesse and you have to have this in your pre-spawn arsenal so for number four I'm going with a compact jig not a big jig not a full-size profile giant flipping jig a small condense size compact Jake this is a missile mini flip jig I like to fish in a 3/8 or 1/2 ounce and I like to keep the trailer on it short as well and the pre-spawn I always pick a trailer that has a more neutral action not a big motion you don't want big action in your jig trailer in the pre spawn you want subtle action and this is a Berkley PowerBait chunk one of my favorite colors of course in the pre spawn I love green pumpkin I love brown and orange but you can't beat black and blue it's a great one and in the pre spawn I really soak the jig toward the bottom I don't move it fast I'm crawling it I'm keeping it down around the cover isolated logs rocks docks it's a great lure to slow down and get a little more finesse and this is my favorite for catching giant pre spawn bass the little tiny compact jig alright we're almost there we're at number 5 and number 5 is a true finesse lure and never go fishing in the pre spawn without a spinning rod at least one and for this one spinning rod light line ten pound braid zone fluorocarbon leader my number five pick is a shaky head a jig worm shaky head is a great lure if you look at it this is a really special jig head this is a VMC rugby head which this jig head has an offset hook on it so it lets you Texas rig that plastic and the pre spawn we're thrown around a lot of cover so this helps keep it weedless and snag less once again just like that jig I fish a shaky head extremely slow in the pre spawn I cast that where I found fish with these other Lords I find them if I've caught two or three and the bite slows down it's a great time to clean up with a shaky head it's also great for skipping around cover like docks trees overhangs it's perfect once it hits the bottom listen to me it's a shaky head look at it head down tail up that tail is going to be sitting there twitching just like that and all I want you to do is shake your rod very subtly move it a little shake your rod and every time you shake your rod head down tail up it's gonna attract those fish into pre-spawn and finally number six and I'm gonna throw a little curveball at you it's actually six and seven in one group the reason I did that I couldn't make up my mind I couldn't pick which one's better than the pre-spawn so I'm giving both of both of them for you as number six and seven for the best pre-spawn lures start with a spinnerbait man I love a spinnerbait a lot of people forgot about these things because of vibrating jigs because of chatter baits they forgot about them but don't forget about them there's something special about a spinner bait in the pre-spawn my general rule of thumb all blades in clean too pretty clear water I use willow blades but in stained to dirty water and you're going to have a lot of that in the pre-spawn because of spring rains look at that I go to a Colorado spinner bait this is a bait by mullux called a water slash 3/8 and 1/2 ounce the 1/2 ounce is perfect and really I cater my color toward the forage and the water color when that water color gets real dirty go to brighter color blades like this blaze orange to help find the fish help find the bait in that dirty water as far as how to retrieve the spinner bait in the pre spawn I like to go toward the slower side and most of the time I'm a medium retrieve to a slow roll which is barely creeping it just barely feel those blades vibrate and thump and of course number 7 which is in the same category and I already mentioned it is a vibration Jake ChatterBait sallal or a lot of good ones the original chatter Bates great and this one is really special this is a vibration jig called a mullux lover and just like the spinnerbait this thing in the pre-spawn is magic because you could cover a lot of water you can fish it around cover in an elicits a reaction strike the great thing about that mullux lover is its blade is fixed on a normal chatter bait the blades loose you tend to get snagged more but on a fixed lip the lip actually acts as a deflector to hit the cover and bounce off of it the other great thing is that hook is free swinging you can add a lot of different trailers to it I like to add a finesse swim bait trailer in the pre spawn but it covers a lot of water it's pretty snag less and you can catch some really big fish in the pre spawn on that jig as well I hope you enjoyed it there was your top six I mean seven favorite lures to fish in the pre spawn listen dress warm it can be cold the fish can be fickle but when you find them they're grouped up and when you find them you got a chance for a fish of a lifetime there's your Table six pre spawn baits for spring bass fishing listen if you liked this in the shop if you want to see more just like this take a second stop if you're not already
