years the futility still scarred the fans memory while the high staff through the timing of the playoff the team turned the first year head coach Marvin Lewis his mission was to restore the roar that once filled the Bengal jungle [Applause] [Music] new community when you era it's not right now you've got to go out and taking me you got to be wounded lay down and sacrifice nothing to get one they come and NFL back here as excitement built Lewis kept his team grounded get him together talk to him now let's play football the way we know how to play that's running tackle okay running tackle take the extra step reps walk again this was not the same old Bengals and the NFL was put on notice and it calls on the bangles way as the season progressed the teen clawed its way into contention I don't way to work out a way to work I work them work them hope radiated throughout Cincinnati as the Bengals were in playoff contention until the final week of the regular season a win over the undefeated Chiefs highlighted a year in which the Bengals became only the third team to follow a 2 and 14 campaign with a 500 or better record the odds finally started to tip in the Bengals favor [Music] yeah we have seen some upstanding plays on the Bengals offense unbelievable play by Chad Johnson 2003 marked the beginning of a journey for the Cincinnati Bengals and their fans a once desolate path became a road to redemption [Music] I want you to enjoy this man it's about football players it's about doing it the right way right and that's the fun of it to enjoy the Bengals opened their season at home against the Denver Broncos the air was filled with nervous energy no reason to be quiet in here you're never quiet in here let's go you guys don't come in here ever quiet not today today is why you do what you do you loose be loose the emotion will be over the first time you knock the hell out somebody one play at a time don't have to get ahead of ourselves tuck your shirt and look like a pro let's go all right I got lucky Aryan look like a pro don't you get it done you won't get home and/or get it will involve all the boys like I said the paper I don't know but for the bill reveals God have you have you been there Dibley in Louis's first regular-season game as head coach Cincinnati got off to an inauspicious start [Applause] we're not locked in no way we're getting I asked it so whatever we can do and we can get somebody on guys all right we don't have to win the game with one play focus then play one snap at a time the Bengals didn't heed their head coach under pressure from price try pass him he shovels it forward in his picks off gold is going into the end zone there were shades of black you know the left-handed left-handed from Faraj shade through the same old stuff Dover Cincinnati lost its next true games falling - oh and three the team was losing but under Luis they were also learning just at you that's you Kevin hug him back Kevin hug the back come on Kelly run Kelly's not running you don't have any idea what kind of tackling event I am so tired of that he would not me yeah but we can't win for losing that's alright that's alright improvement was coming in baby steps as the Bengals were learning how to win in week four they traveled to Cleveland to face the rival Brown shitman drops to throw as time looking down the middle i believe we used absolutely burned Robert Crippen the team was gaining a confident swagger playing its first turnover free game since week 9 of 2002 play-action skin looking to the end here Reggie Kelly touchdown Kelly's score gave the Bengals their first lead of the season and the defense did the rest linebacker Kevin Hardy led a unit that helped the Browns scoreless in the second half now the blister tears Japanese presses better back back at the 32-yard line and he's hammering the nails in the coffin I think this is a new perspective here the Bengals next home game was against the Ravens a team Louis knew well as its former defensive coordinator the team took advantage of a favorable matchup in the first quarter loaded right side looking looking across the middle of the pier [Applause] goki private America clouded over Cincinnati pounded the Ravens in viscid mission taking a 27 to 7 lead [Music] for once the bounces were going the bengals way if there's an throw on a play-action looking long down the middle of the field got Chad Johnson out there [Applause] [Music] Conference football team swelling the following week Cincinnati faced the NFC West leading Seahawks the Bengals trailed seven to nothing early but maintained composure with help from running back Rudi chunks [Music] just one planet time keep our boys and keep quiet in a back-and-forth battle the defense never relented Cincinnati held a five to nothing edge in turnover differentiation trailing 24 to 20 the Bengals took the lead for good in the fourth hidden throw us to his back the bingos improved to three and four as there once bleak season was pointed in a whole new direction Louis under Marvin Lewis players set their sights high what's up today entire speaker I want to be wearing the greatest ever played addressed on the speaker but I want to be better than rice that's right y'all guarding up and we're gonna help you well he may not have reached Jerry Rice's level just yet Chad Johnson did lead the AFC with 1355 receiving yards a franchise record he also earned his first Pro Bowl stack another ocular catch by Chad Johnson 85 who can cover him because nobody Johnson continues to improve each season and may be on his way to achieving icon status no sort no shortcut oh it's like you got it you know how to do it let's do it one play at a time receiver Peter Warrick once again demonstrated the skills to fill highlight reasons and Peter warranty did things making people miss entice me here work is top to tackle but in 2003 he also became a complete receiver Warrick had career highs with 79 receptions and eight touchdowns yeah I'm playing a time in 2003 John King was the only NFL quarterback to play every offensive snap for his team he threw for nearly thirty six hundred yards with a career-high 26 touchdowns third best in the NFL hit that made one heck of a crawl [Music] boys you're the leader boys go baby go get in the lid and his teammates spot they started with John Key to make it a nice block let's go big will never tire away this offensive tackle number 71 Willie Anderson flourished under Louis earning his first Pro Bowl selection and emerging as a team leader we are full of good and finally say we're gonna do it man clearly your heart believe it Anderson open many of the holes for a running game that totaled nearly 2,000 yards with Corey Dillon injured running back Rudi Johnson emerged as a solid replacement in just five starts Johnson finished the season with 950 7 yards right [Music] and off [Music] Rudie Rudie Rudie against the Texans in week 10 Johnson carried the ball a team record 43 times and finished with a career-high 182 rushing yards Cincinnati held a 22 and a half minute advantage in time of possession and Johnson scored the winning touchdown in the fourth quarter the Bengals won their third straight at home but the season's biggest test would come one week later all the time all the effort for today finish everything we do our job and we just keep shoveling and at the end the pile is gone that's what it's going to be like the Chiefs were unbeaten in nine games yet receiver Chad Johnson guaranteed a Bengals victory and his team was ready to deliver every way nobody checks out the win I don't - Becky Davis to be Goliath no more you [Applause] what a day baby that they're complying [Applause] Cincinnati's defense limited the NFL's highest-scoring team to just three points in the first half and running back priest Holmes was held to under 100 total yards for the first time all season off the block that attack the line of scrimmage they can't run if we all allow it tear off the blocks and get particle run seven kick their ass every single play the Bengals had aroused their sellout crowd with a high score heading into Hampton [Applause] we're going to get this done we're going to do this let's win this half thirty minutes of play our ass off football one heartbeat everybody together let's go this half let's go hey get a smile on your face but kick your ass let's go the bingos were all smiles following their opening drive of the third quarter kids are throw rose right side got Jeremy Johnson [Applause] we don't play in a different get it together the often we got to keep calm okay we got to keep playing like we're down I'm a final the bingos kept pounding this time with Peter Warwick on special teams what the staff they hauled amazing relief that esteemed it thick nobody was catching Peter he's party celebrating the bumpers 20 yard line [Applause] we get our money right now what do you make your money let's go they're going to take a shot some kind of play action or gadget play action green looking for the end zone got a man touchdown and the Bengals hold on baby 17:12 don't worry buddy let's go go on move on hey move on get up you're doing one hell of a job baby let's keep it up you got the big play left to win the game in you man let's go the coaches confidence was in worried and the Bengals weren't about to sit on their slight lead two drops to throw steps em in the pocket looking long nobody will again [Music] [Applause] keep your boy and finish you can run the clock out if we do it that way Sophie deny you work too hard with the score 24 to 19 a first down would secure the Bengals upset victory across the 20 25 30 35 40 looking like a human bowling balls rudy is the man possess the speeds are no longer undefeated what a football game 450 there here Hey the win earned the Bengals a share of first place in the AFC North an impressive feat for a first-year head coach and the once forsaken franchise we said it all week long it will put our heads down and play and don't worry about the score and there's no question we did that right dependance hello cuz you plays your butt off from the first snap to the left that's the same way we earn more opportunities to push harder and to get better and to smile more and have more fun because there's more opportunity ahead but the one I'm most thankful for is Mike Brown you kill because he's endured a lot for you guys each other and it's hard and he means it for you guys yes remember the feeling you had a week ago the feeling you had is because you believed in each other your believe in yourself and you went out and played the football game one play at a time we said last we got to physically get after them right from the start it's no different this week we're going to do battle following their win over Kansas City so then goals had to play three straight road games receiver Chad Johnson got the team off to a good start in San Diego back to throw stepping up throwing endzone touchdown Pat Johnson getting the play-action and rolling right looking right throwing to the baby endzone the Chad Johnson touchdown San Diego showing blitz big son get a quick get left side jump oh leader some laundry on the field pick up your jock Chad in for a third touchdown the bengals amassed a season-high 444 yards on the way to their sixth 15 the next week in Pittsburgh the bengals sought to avenge an earlier home loss to the Steelers [Music] Kelly Washington 25 more comminity Craig Kelly Washington's in for the touchdown Cincinnati took a 14 to 3 lead but the Steelers rallied in the second half Duncan Maddox looking for the end zone and with 105 remaining on the clock Steelers and speaking the lead make sure he knows nickel and safety he wasn't playing Ralph okay come on now let's go make sure we're know we're doing keep playing now keep playing a goal the team needed to cover 52 yards in just over a minute to win the Bengals of old might have folded but this wasn't the team from seasons past 35 and Counting Brandon Bennett up the middle straight up the middle down inside the 25 must go down he's inside the 20 19 seconds on the clock from the 18 it drops to throw pump throws to the middle of the field on opportunity knocks the Penguins are answering the door following a loss in Baltimore the Bengals returned home to face the 49ers in frigid conditions Garcia they was showing blitz ins coming and here they come [Applause] [Music] in a blizzard of offense the bengals took a 21 to 14 lead in the second quarter now looking throwing long to the Rudi Johnson rushed for 174 yards with two scores in the second half pacing Cincinnati to victory they'll hand it off [Applause] [Applause] [Music] with an 8 and 6 record the Bengals moved into a first-place tie in the AFC North but the team lost its next two games and the playoffs slipped just out of reach the Bengals were disappointed yet their six-game improvement in 2003 was best in the NFL in the eyes of their coach this was a team reading don't hang your head you ain't got nothing to be ashamed of you went out there you play your ass off this ain't the same old Bengals this is the new bangles it's a football team that's got some nuts and it's got some pride we still got everything we want in front of us let's go let's go bring it in here tight here we go everybody up everybody up nobody pulls a block out of this football team all right it's more gold ahead of it it's ahead of us one heartbeat man heart beat on three one two three sorry throughout 2003 the team stayed United in the face of adversity evoking memories of a once-proud era in Bengals football and your boyfriend [Music] [Applause] in 2003 fans saw the beginning of a journey under Marvin Lewis the Bengals won't rest until they've reached their ultimate goal the final destination on the road to redemption you
