hello again everybody and welcome back to  the channel i thought on this episode we   would take a look at the xr18 and setting up  monitors and we would also look at the terms   that you'll run across doing this so that you can  understand why we're making the changes and doing   the setup the way we're doing it i have got my x  air edit software called up so let's get started   the first thing we want to do is come over here  and uh click the in and out to set up our routing   we want to make sure and get to our aux out tab  which is this tab and we'll set this up for a   four monitor mix situation now this is the  default setup so this is probably what you   already have with all six of these assigned  just like this but we're going to go ahead   and i'll explain what what's happening here  so aux 1 out that is your xlr out we want   that connected to bus 1 in the mixer which it is  aux 2 out should be connected to the bus 2 level   aux 3 out an aux four out which like i said  we're gonna do a four mix band so that's uh   all we need to do uh these should be post fader  which should be as you can see the little uh key   down here post fader is the light blue um if yours  is not right click on whichever one and that'll   let you change it as you can see here but like i  said we're okay we want these light blue and when   they're already like we need and we've got what we  need the reason we want these post fader is this   is talking about our outputs and we want to make  sure that our outputs have a fader a master level   fader on each output which that's what this does  that means the xlr output on the front of the xr18   is post fader after the fader so again we  make these post fader so that we actually   have a master fader level for each of our bus  outputs and now i'll close this all right and   now we're back to our mixer screen and on here we  want to come across uh tab over to our sins all   right and now we need to choose a channel which  it can be any channel i've got sound coming into   channel 14 so i will choose 14 but for what we're  doing you could choose any channel at this point   all right we need to choose where to pick the  output for our busses since these are going to   be monitors we don't want them to be post fader  on this end of things we do not want our channel   fader affecting what goes to the monitors at  all um so whatever we do with our fader will   not affect the channel so that means it either  needs to be pre fader post eq pre eq or input   now maybe i should explain what those are  so let's take a look at this flow chart   alright so here you can see the signal flow  input chart for the xr18 and this is your line   coming into the console into the preamp and if  you choose the input pick point then that will   go straight to the monitors from there you'll  only capture the preamp and straight to the   monitors if you choose the pre eq pickpoint then  you'll also capture your low cut filter you'll   also capture your gate if you choose the post eq  pick point you'll capture the channel strip eq   and everything else before it and if  you choose the pre-fader pick point   you'll also you'll also grab the  compressor into what goes to the monitors so why would you want to choose one of  these over the other you might wonder   well one thing is the compression on a vocalist  in the house it's great in the monitors vocalists   tend not to like it especially if you're using a  lot of compression if it's just a two to one ratio   and you're just flickering a little bit and losing  a little bit of the peaks they may not notice that   but if you're using a lot of compression four  to one six to one you're into the gain reduction   quite a bit well that's also happening in  their monitors and in their monitors that   means they're fighting it they sing louder  the compression sucks them back they try and   sing even louder to naturally compensate for  that and they end up blowing their voice out   they may not even realize what's going on they may  just tell you they need more monitor but what's   happening is the compression is causing them to  sing louder and louder and harder and harder and   it's harder on their voice so in general you don't  want heavy compression going to the monitor so   if you can pick off a vocalist monitor before the  compressor then you're probably going to be better   off now we also have pre-eq and post eq there's  a couple schools of thought here one school of   thought is any change you need on the channel  strip eq for the house you're going to need   for the monitor as well but the other school of  thought is you're not hearing the monitors at all   so what you do in the house could have an adverse  effect on the monitors were especially with things   like feedback to consider personally i think when  you're running monitors from front of house and   your console is doing house and monitors i think  pre-eq is the safer setting so that's what i would   recommend there now of course if you wanted to  catch everything uh eq compression gates low-cut   filter you would choose pre-fader the one thing  you don't want to choose is post-fader because   that means anything you do in the house with the  vader will also change the monitors causing the   monitors to go up and down on that channel as well  so generally you want to avoid that there's one   situation where you might want to do that and that  would be if you have some kind of tracks like say   you have a mp3 of a choir or something like that  that you want to fade out well you want to fade   that out in the monitors too so in that case you  would want to set that channel exclusively to post   fader that way when you bring the house levels  down and fade it out you'll also be fading that   out in the monitors or otherwise it would hang  around in the monitors until you finally mute it okay so with that information in mind i'm going to  suggest that you start with your baseline monitor   setup with your sends pre-eq so what we want to  do is up here in the corner there's a little globe   here we want to highlight that that will let us  make whatever changes we do on whatever channel   we've selected to be every channel so it's simple  so in this case we just click pre-eq it's set we   click pre-eq it's set we click pre-eq i should  mention this is how you set it up for using your   front of house console as your monitor console  as well where you're doing monitors from front of   house or you have your xr18 as an audio interface  for your recording and it is your recording mixer   and you're doing monitors from it from as well if  you were using it for a monitor console by itself   then you would want it to be post eq because  you'd have total control of the monitor mix   and you would be totally monitoring them from  the stage and know exactly what's happening   so this is what you do when you're  doing monitors from front of house   and as far as adjusting the monitor mix eq the  overall eq on each mix uh simple enough you go   cho choose your mix over here in this case we'll  say mix one bus one highlight it over here in the   master section choose eq and we can do what we  need right here for bus one uh we move over to   bus two as it's here bus three bus four make our  adjustments i'm back to bus one now mix one also   want to mention you can choose the parametric or  one of the two graphic options so now i've got an   actual band scene set up here on the xr18 in the  x air edit software so let's show the different   ways that you can set up your monitor mixes now  this will be the first way not necessarily the   best way but one of the ways so we tab across to  our sins now we just choose a channel to feed to   the monitor so let's say kick we choose the kick  we have the drummer play we ask the drummer how   much he wants in the monitor is we bring it up  and when he's happy he tells us to stop and we   stop and that's the drum kick drum in the drum  monitor uh stage right we ask him what he needs   if he wants the kick we bring it up until he tells  us he's good let's say mix2 doesn't want any so we   don't bring it up mix three once a little bit  so we bring a little bit into it until he says   he's good then we move to our next channel the  snare okay we asked the drummer does he want any   if he does we bring it up till he says he's good  let's say nobody wants any of the snare so we   don't do anything else on those channels nobody  wants any more of the drums so we go to the base   drummer wants to hear bass so we bring  up the bass guitar in the drum mix   until he says good another way we can set the  monitor mixes is straight from our mixer tab   and if you look on each channel there is a little  box here which are actually our mixes so this is   mix one so if we want to bring the kick up and  mix one there it is if we want to bring it up   in mix two there it is we want to bring it up in  mix three there it is we want to bring the kick up   and mix four there it is now we go to the snare  if we want to bring the snare up and mix four   for the drums there it is uh anything else let's  come across our vocals if our stage right vocal   wants to hear himself we'll go ahead and bring  it up here if our center vocal wants to hear   himself in mix 2 which is our center vocal mix our  center monitor mix we bring it up here and so on and this is another way to set the monitor  mixes and this is probably my favorite way   to set the monitor mixes we come over  here to the side to our buses and we   choose bus one because that's our first monitor  mix and now the faders are all showing us the mix   on bus one or monitor one and in that case let's  say we want to put some kick in it then there   it is let's say we want to put some snare in it  there it is uh we want to put some vocals in it   there comes our vocals and now we move to mix  two once again now these faders show us our mix2   let's do our kick they don't want any snare they  want to have vocals and there's that and there's   that so there's vocals in that mix let's go to  mix three once again the faders zero out because   now we're on mix three uh they don't want kick  maybe mix three is the bass player and he wants   some bass guitar so there we go uh maybe the mixer  he wants guitar there's like guitars going to mix   three and then a mix of the vocals into mix three  just like that and now we're under the drummer   okay the drummer probably definitely would want  his kick drum snare drum maybe he wants his toms   and probably he's gonna want the bass  guitar some of the guitars and a vocal mix   and there that is and then when we go to our main  we're now seeing our house mix across the faders   and if we want to quickly adjust any monitor we  just go back to bus one that's our monitor one mix   bus two is our monitor two mix plus three is our  monitor three mix and bus four is our monitor   four mix so it's that simple to jump back and  forth the only thing it's important to remember   that you follow which tab you're on over here  if you're on the main button that is your main   mix if you're on bus one your monitor one bus two  monitor two bus three exactly so on okay i do want   to mention the gain control here it's important  that you set the gain control first at sound check   and have that finished before you move on to your  monitor mixes the reason for that is the gain is   the first thing that the input hits coming  into the console so if you adjust your gain   after your monitor levels have been set then you  will change your monitors if you bring the gain   up you'll bring your monitors up if you bring  your gain down you'll bring your monitors down   so it's just important to get your gain right or  as close to right as possible at sound jack so you   don't have to mess with the gain again after sound  check after you've already got everything set   so that in a nutshell is how you set up the  monitors on the xr18 i hope you found this   information useful please like and subscribe  to the channel and i will see you next time you
