hey hey welcome to another tech Tuesday this is Chad from a central warship and this week we have another bérenger wing video we're gonna do and we're going to talk today specifically on effects and before I get going too far let me tell you I'm going to be doing some free scenes that you guys can use the one of the big issues if you can call it that with the wing when it comes to church use is that people don't think it's the most volunteer friendly board and part of that is because it just has so many options but also the initialize seen that behringer gives you is so initialize that there's not a lot of things that you would expect to be able to get to quickly like you can on say an X 32 and one of those big ones is when you want to apply effects to things you have to do kind of a lot of work to get the effects up and running so the point of this video and these free resources is I'm gonna have a initialize scene for you with some of this work already done and you can either use my scene if you want I'll show a couple variations of it or if you want to incorporate this into your own scene I'll show you a very quick method of how I set it all up so for the purpose of this video so there's not a lot of fader flipping and hopefully this will look okay on camera I have condensed our channels that we need into these basically four sections right here so from left to right we are looking at our auxilary returns over here and I've pre labeled them for band verb drum verb vocal verb and delay and if you notice there's an R on the end of them so that we know these are the return channels which we'll talk about in just a moment here so in this method you do have to burn for auxilary inputs to be able to have stereo returns there is another method that I'll talk about at the end of the video if you need those returns for other things there's a way around that but for now we're gonna have that in there in our Center section we have bus's 13 through 16 and you can see again ban verb drum verb vocal verb delay and with the letter S at the end because these are gonna be our effects sins and then over here I have just some generic input channels so you would normally see over here the most important ones gonna be smiley face Chad that's me I am smiley face Chad so that's the microphone you're hearing right now and the microphone that we'll be sending to these different effects as we go finally over here on the right hand section is our custom controls if you have ever setup your effects based off of my effects video to the next 32 it's gonna be basically the same thing where we're gonna have volume sends on fader being able to put the effect up on the screen we're gonna have mutes and tap tempo control that we can get to over here so you don't necessarily have to be looking at you know all these things while you're going while you're mixing a band you only want to see your input channels you can use this over here to very quickly control what's going to the effect and how loud the effect is one thing to know in this video I'm not gonna spend much if any time explaining which effects I'm using and the parameters of the effects I might do that in a later video if you guys want today's more about just routing the effect and then I'll let you use your own creativity to decide how you want those effects to sound we are gonna start by setting up our effects sins and actually well let me start by explaining sins versus returns if that's new to you so if you imagine an old analog board where there were no digital effects built into the board the way would work is you would make a mix of say your vocals so we had our vocal mix you'd send a mix of vocals out of the board you'd send it out it'd go into an effects rack there's off to the side of your board input into that and then it would create this awesome reverb sound then you'd have ideally two channels of that plugging back into your board on a return channel and that's how you would hear how well that effect was and be able to blend it in as see fit on the wing and most other digital boards it's the exact same thing the only difference is that that effects rack is built into the board instead of actually being out but we're still sending a group of channels into the effect and then controlling the return of those channels so that we can hear them so the same concept is going to happen here so starting at the beginning of that chain is our sinned now as a default all of your buses in the behringer wing are set to be pre fade we want them all to be post fade because that's what you want for your effect sentence so we're gonna select band verb click on the home button the second button down is basically our configuration screen and we're gonna change our bus mode from pre to post on each one of these send channels alright so now that they are set to post we are going to turn on our inserts so we're going to insert in effect now you have two options you have a pre fade insert in a post fade insert we'll talk more about this later but for right now we're going to use the post fade insert and on each of these channels we're going to turn it on and we're gonna select the corresponding rack so in this case I'm going to select rack 1 so for the drum verb on a rack - on rack 3 on and rack 4 okay now we're gonna actually put the effect we want in those racks so band verb I'm gonna select for the today's video we're going to do the vintage verb drum verb will do the VSS 3 vocal verb will do the vintage room delay will do the old trusty stereo delay now I'm gonna very quickly set some generic settings on here this is mostly just like some longer decay times so that you can hear it for the sake of video as we get going here again I'm not gonna really explain it I'm just gonna go through this really quickly and set some generic settings on here cool another thing we need to do for our sins is we need to set the faders to unity at least that's the way I like to do it and we have now set up our effects sins we now need to set up our effects returns so we're over here to again auxilary 5 through 8 we're gonna select ban verb click on that configuration page and we need to set our input if you are just turning on the board it'll probably say local ends we're gonna select bus and if this first one looks like ban verb drum verb local verb and delay easy and so we have now set up our effects return channels so finally to be able to hear my vocal smiley face Chad with effects on it we have to send it to our effects sins so it can go out to the effect and then we'll be able to hear it by turning up our return channels there's two different ways you can do that on this console one we can select the effect that we want it sends on fader and you'll notice that my fader is turned down as muted and this is controlling how much of my microphone is going to the selected effect and you notice that when I did that we started getting level on the effect and on the return another way to do it would be to select my channel it sends on fader and now we see how much my channel is going to each of the the bus stems that are on the screen from here I can unmute and send level and now you see my channel going to the effects sins and then we see the effect returned over here now I'm going to turn off sends on fader and to be able to hear those effects all I need to do is turn up the return channel so here's band verb drum verb vocal local verb and delay now one thing I want you to notice we'll talk about this more a little bit later when you turn the return channel up and down the effect is immediate delay delay let's write down it cuts out right away if we were to go the other way around and have our returns and a hundred percent and then control the volume of our sins we can control what is going to the sinned and when we cut the fader back it will finish its cycle before going back to making no sound so in this case if I turn the delay up and then back down you will hear the delay finish even as the faders down so I generally like it to be with my sins up and my returns being controlled for the level I want but it just really depends on what you're doing and there are times when you may want to do the other way around okay so for now we have my level going to my sins I have effects that I can play with so now I want to be able to control these things without having to see them on the screen and that's where our custom controls are gonna come into play so to control what's over here and I've done most of this before the video so the video does have to be super long and boring but I'm going to show you on at least a band for how to do all this so we're click view we're gonna select band verb the the first encoder here now I've already named it and colored it but you can click on color and pick your colors and turn the light on and off you can click on name and name it so what we want to do is we want this to be the fader control for in this case the band verb return so click fader and it's actually already selected on here but I scroll down to auxiliary five band verb return and now you can see as I turn this encoder up check one two one two one two is controlling with very fine movements which I like the volume of my band fader the next button down we want to do sends on fader says the fader in this case we're gonna select again buss 13 for our band verb and so now we can control the levels going to that effect and then the next button down we want to be our our effect on the screen so this case I'm gonna channel page and then I've got buss 13 sinned and then insert too so now when I click on this button do you see it throws the effect on the screen so I've got all of our effects ready to go right at a button away moving on to the user settings down here getting a click view and we've set up mutes to just kill those effects very quickly if I need to so again I've already named them for us just to save time but you can name them however you like some quick this top button here and what I want to do is to mute the effect return so it's going to be immediate so I'll click mute and then I'm selecting the band reverb return auxilary 5 and so you can hear band verb but as soon as I hit that button it mutes band burn drummer vocal verb delay and it's very immediate finally this bottom right hand button I've got to label this tap and so we want that to control the time between our repeats of our delay so in that case I'm gonna click on effects parameters we're gonna be on the stereo delay which is insert 4 and we're gonna have it set to the time so if we look at that as I tap in the button you'll see the time settings change so if I were to say do a very slow tap then I've got a lot of time a lot a lot of time between my repeats if I tap it really quick then it's a lot faster it's a lot faster time between my repeats so the idea of this if you're new to it is to tap the time to the music and then the echo of the effect will be in time with the music and won't sound quite so messy it'll it'll be a lot more musical sounding now if you're not sure or if you're not comfortable if you don't have a great sense of time you don't have to use this delay is a nice little extra you know thickener that you can throw on your lead vocal but if you can't use it correctly I'd rather you not use it at all but it's worth playing around with again it'll be in that free scene that you can try out now let's imagine that we need all these auxiliary channels for say computers or DVD players or whatever it is we're plugging in maybe on the back of the console and we don't want to burn for auxilary channels to make effects returns well you don't have to do it this way this way gives you the most amount of control it will allow you to adjust panning width you can send effects to effects but if we really just need those channels for regular inputs another option we can do I'm going to mute these term down is we can set on the actual bus send we can turn on our own return channels basically so I'm going to turn all these down for right now remember my my vocal is going to these and I'm gonna select the band verb and I'm gonna go home and I'm gonna click on the the panning control the fader control in here and on each one of these I'm going to turn on the sind two main one which is what we're listening to right now now what this is done is it's basically set up a return channel for us now if you remember earlier when I talked about how we had an insert before and an answer after the fader because our effect is after the fader in this particular example it's as if the return channel is always set to 100% but when we turn this up we will be adjusting the sind so for example on the delay check one two one two and if you remember earlier when I pulled down the return with the delay going it immediately cut off so one thing to know if you do this it's not like that because you're controlling the sind so if I pull it down you'll hear it will complete its cycle before it fades out check one two one two so it continued saying check with a bunch of delay but while I had when I turned the fader down it was I could continue talking and there's other words were not being delayed hey one two hey ABCD so you hear it's gonna let it go through now if you don't want that if you want it to be more like return you can go up here to your insert that's above the fader and you can turn that on and apply your delay to that industry you see disappeared from the earlier insert and moves up here and so now returned it's actually as a return Channel and basically our send level is a hundred percent going to that all the time so you have to kind of pick and choose what you want to do but that is one way that you could handle that now personally I like it in the second insert slot just because it's more like what sorry it's more like what you would do if as a guitarist with your volume control in front of your delay but it really just depends on what you want to do again the other option with the separate returns will give you the most control but this is a valid options so I hope that's been helpful for you if you have any questions please feel free to leave them in the comment section on YouTube again I'll be doing more videos of this and again you can find a initialize scene with my settings on there in for free in the description of the video please feel free to download that and enjoy until next time have a great week again this is chad from ascension worship i hope this has been helpful for you and your team come back here every Tuesday for new information [Music] you
