good evening oakland good evening our virtual audience watching us here tonight for our seven last words at this time would you please stand wherever you are for our scripture for tonight coming from isaiah chapter 53 verses 3 through 9 and it reads he was despised and rejected by mankind a man of suffering and familiar with pain like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised and we held him in low esteem surely he took up our pain and hope for suffering yet we considered him punished by god stricken by him and afflicted but he was pierced for our transgressions he was crushed for our iniquities the punishment that brought us peace was on him and by his wounds we are healed we all like sheep having gone astray each of us turned to our own way and the lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all he was oppressed and afflicted yet he did not open his mouth he was led into a he was led like a lamb to slaughter and as a sheep before his shears is silent so he did not open his mouth by oppression and judgment he has taken away yet who of his generation protested for he was cut off from the land of the living for the transgressions of my people he was punished he was assigned a grave with the wicked and with the rich in his death though he had done no violence nor was any deceit in his mouth the word of god for the people of god blessed beyond to god and now while i have a witness online i don't know about you but i'm so glad jesus went to calgary for you for you for you for you and for me i don't know about you but we ought to just take another five or ten seconds just bless the name of the lord come on will you just bless the name of the lord with us oh yes let everything that hath wrath prays the name of the lord god almighty my god my god would you pray with me right now speak o lord may the words of my mouth and the meditations of all of our hearts bring a new found sense of urgency to do your justice to love mercy and to walk humbly with you we pray in the name of jesus christ our lord amen and amen i give god thanks and praise for the gift the honor of being present on this day and to this great servant dr hames god bless you to these great pulpiteers and children of the most high god may the lord god bless you real good as you prepare to lead us and for you who are here with us who have led us both in music ministry and you who bear witness online across the world to the liberating love of god through christ jesus our lord i say to you thanks be to god for your presence with us on this day there's a word and it happens to be the first word father forgive them for they know not what they are doing it's interesting to me that the words from the cross began with a word to god a closer look at not only these first words from the cross but at the word itself father it indicates something very important for us in this season and that is the gift of relationship somebody say relationship jesus's choice of words reveals his closeness to god he doesn't talk to god in some far off distant kind of situation in a transactional manner but no he refers to god as parent and if you would afford me a theological assad might we do the work of a building a heuristic theology right here for just a moment just for a moment if gendered language might be a distraction for you in this moment i pray that you would extend the bounds of your theological imagination to allow for the gracious generosity that is engendered when you are in relationship for jesus of nazareth was in relationship with god he called on the one abba father he called on the god who he knew had brought him into life he called on the one who he knew was life he called on the one who he believed would not leave him he called on the one who he knew had not brought him this far just to bring him this far can i get a witness somebody oh yes and the gift for us the prayer is that we too might walk in relationship with god in such a way that the gift of the depths of our love for god is modeled in how we call on the name of god theological aside done the second word is just as measured as the first forgive instead of writing off the world as expendable jesus models a generous compassion that challenges all who would seek to follow in his path for after being betrayed and beaten bullied burdened with a rugged cross to which he would be bound he proclaimed a bold word he chose forgiveness as the first word amidst the pain he chose the love of god amidst injustice he chose to both see and seek a greater good and so that teaches us something very important about the nature of forgiveness for forgiveness itself requires us to make a choice can i get a witness somebody oh yes and in that sense forgiveness is counter cultural for it pressures us to choose will i let go or will i hang on and you know there's so many folks these days that are holding on the things that are holding them back can i get a witness somebody oh yes there's a tendency to prioritize the nursing of wounds that we have been enduring to be concerned with self-preservation i gotta get me and mine i gotta take care of mine and so i end up harboring all forms of judgment and distancing myself shutting others out and keeping us locked into a place where god never intended because god the god who gave you life the god who gave jesus of nazareth life also calls us to experience the gift of freedom that comes with life because where the spirit of the lord is can i get a witness somebody there is liberty there is liberty instead there are so many who choose to make excuses but to forgive is to break the cycles of poverty incurred while distancing ourselves from others it requires us to become proximate with that which pains us what grieves us what causes us to wonder if we will indeed survive i don't know about you but i'm so glad that when jesus was pained that he chose not to distance himself from you or from me can i get a witness somebody but instead that he chose to come near to draw near and to model for us the work that is for us somebody say forgive forgive that is the work to speak a word of forgiveness requires one to have faith faith in the future faith in hope faith that hope is indeed still worth fighting for faith that god can do what you or i cannot do faith that god is still on the throne can i get a witness somebody faith that god is still working on me and you know what if i have faith that god is still working on me i want to believe that god is still working on you too faith is what forgiveness requires so this first word father forgive them places us in a prayerful posture it's not a weak place because to forgive is not for the faint of heart oh yeah to forgive requires us to be willing to suspend our judgment long enough to turn it into wonder to forgive requires us to indeed hold on to god's unchanging hand to speak a word of forgiveness is to trust that god's hand huh is bigger than my hand it's bigger than your hand it's to trust that god is unfolding a story that's what jesus was modeling for us in this first word he was teaching us that god could be trusted oh my lord that god could be trusted that god was trustworthy and so the question for you and for me today is do you believe that god is trustworthy do you trust god with your hopes and your dreams with your fears do you trust that god can be trusted i don't know about you i know that there are some who trust in horses i'm told there are others who trust in chariots but i choose as the psalmist to trust in the name of the lord god almighty the maker of heaven and earth the one who was ears and is always coming among us in that same way to speak a word of forgiveness therefore is directly related to and linked to belief do you trust that you can believe god do you trust that god is indeed trustworthy do you trust that god is believable for there are some who would say yeah i believe in god but that's not good enough because folks believe in all kind of things folks believe in their positions folks believe in their title rev and doctrine bishop and everything else folks believe in their bank accounts they believe in their own strength and power privileges but to forgive is to believe god to forgive is to believe god not simply believe in god but to believe god that god has the last word to forgive is to believe god to be a doctor in the sick room god to be a lawyer in the courtroom to forgive is to believe that god can do exceedingly abundantly above anything that you or i could ever ask and so i've got a question for you church do you believe god do you believe god for to believe god puts you proximate to pain and it requires you to extend your theological imagination to trust that god is trustworthy father forgive them well who is them them are they and that's the way most folk talk about them them are always over in it amazing how them are always them over there and never us but see to sit in this first word is to reckon with the reality that we are them too we are them too and so the temptation to other others is one for which we ought to sit and deal with because it reminds us it allows us to recognize that jesus was modeling a different way that jesus was calling us to let go jesus was calling us to pick up jesus was calling us to a life of confession that we must confess that at times we've preferred to harbor unforgiveness than to release others from the power we think we will over them but the way of god the work of god the work that is ours is the work of forgiving and being forgiven so transgressors oh yeah as it says you you wounded me but god god is a healer right and not just a healer god is my healer can i get a witness somebody oh yeah traducers you spoke evil of me you slandered my name but god is a name defender can i get another witness not just a name defender god is my name defender trespassers i too have been one who's been a trespasser and so let us forgive and be forgiven this final thought on forgiveness that jesus models for us is an opportunity for us to reckon with the reality that to forgive is to live confessionally it is to recognize that when we love confessionally that we are freed for joyful obedience that we are empowered to live and have faithful lives when we do what jesus did we become a prayer to god in our own bodies our lives bear witness to the majesty of god our hearts are indeed talking about the reign of god we indeed show people that the reign of god is not way out there but it is right here right now coming among us always our lives when we live in a posture of forgiveness we'll indeed model that prayer that jesus of nazareth taught his disciples to pray our father who art in heaven hallowed be your name thy kingdom come it says thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us lead us not into temptation but deliver us o lord from all that is evil for thine is the kingdom the power and the glory forever almighty god our father who art in heaven hallowed be your name let your kingdom come let your will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us right now all that we need to have a life and forgive us for the times that we've been wrong as we at times forgive those who at times have wronged us do not allow us o lord to fall into temptation but deliver us from all that is evil for thine is the kingdom the power and the glory forever our father that's right god our father yeah god the exile ender god the home sender god the heart fixer god the mind regulator god the company keeper god the soul restorer god the god of our ancestors god the god of jesus god the god of the oppressed god the god of george floyd god the god of brianna taylor god the god of sandra bland god the god of our eldest god of our weary ears god of our silent tears god of our yesteryears and god of our coming years god you are our mother and god you are our grandmother and god you are our father so forgive them for they know not what they do and the gift for us on this day is that if forgiveness is the first word then that means forgiveness can't be the last word and i don't know about you but that's a reason to just lift your hands right now wherever you are just go ahead and praise the name go ahead and praise the name let everything let everything let everything that have breath praise the name of the lord hallelujah amen amen come on let's give god another hand of praise father reverend dr theon johnson thank god for singing pastor of the downs memorial united methodist church here in oakland let us go to god in prayer consecrate me now lord to thy service by the power of grace divine let my soul look up with a steadfast hope not my will but let my will be lost and thine draw me nearer near a precious lord to thy bleeding side i'm behind the cross that they see none of me but all of you and we'll be careful to give your name the praise so speak lord we your servants here it is in that name we pray amen i want to call your attention to a familiar word for those who are familiar with the seven last sayings of jesus the christ it's found in the gospel according to luke 23rd chapter verses 39 through 43 and the scripture says one of the criminals who hung their hurled insults at him aren't you the messiah save yourself and us but the other criminal rebuked him don't you fear god he said since you are under the same sentence we are punished justly for what we are getting our deeds deserve but this man has done nothing wrong then he said jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom jesus answered him truly i tell you today you will be with me in paradise i want to put a tag on this text for just a few moments simply this just one word just one word one kind word can change someone's entire day one harsh word can ruin your life we need to realize our words have great power and effect on people's lives and we should use our words as sources of inspiration and not condemnation interestingly in the midst of the cross's agony and pain luke captures a conversation happening with jesus and two thieves what we know and what we can see by their location that they were all in a bad situation jesus and the two unnamed thieves were having words on their crosses with words that could make or break a person hear me if you will that when you are in a mess of a situation it is tough to be objective about who you are and who's in a mess with you to be specific it is sometime hard to be objective when the person close to you appears not to be able to do something about your pain therefore i don't think it is strange since i wasn't there one of the thieves would hurl insults to the persons closest to him even though one really didn't understand the value of jesus please understand that when you are in a mess and you're going through pain the ones closest to you will launch out to hurt you we have to piece together several perspectives upon this manner of execution to see how we as believers viewed the cross at the time it was the death the death by prolonged torture at to add to the idea of the man fastened to stocks perhaps being ridiculed in pillory the cross also meant that it held the victim in a posture which he could not change and the crowd would tease him until he slipped into unconsciousness and eventually death at first those crucified with jesus urged him if you are the christ save yourself and us it is strange that the people like to judge you by what they perceive you can or cannot do it is an odd that people want to kick you when you're down prey on you when they smell blood prod you when you're in a perplexing condition placate you with sarcasm push you when you're already on the edge target you when you're not the bulls i speak death on you when you're already suffering not only can a cross hold you in a posture that you cannot change but also your words can but also the people like the place to condemn you by what you are in permanently by what they speak over your life it is outlandish to consider that they and all of us would have been lost if he had saved himself i wasn't there but i heard that jesus didn't respond to his haters insults and this word ought to be a lesson for us tonight to never waste your time trying to explain who you are to people who are committed to misunderstanding you you have to stop trying to explain yourself to people who only understand from their level of perception no matter how carefully you choose your words they will always end up being twisted by others who are committed against you please remember weak people revenge strong people forgive and intelligent people ignore uh that's good let me say that again that weak people revere just strong people forgive and intelligent people ignore you ought to thank god for those who don't know you and yet god chooses to bless you yes there is another thief who enters into the dialogue with jesus this thief rebuked the other one and based upon his view of jesus he saw something that the other thief didn't see this thief declared that our lord and savior had done nothing wrong the thief knew as palate that jesus was innocent how many black men are murdered and the system knew they were innocent but i digress the thief recognizes who he was and then with humility he asked a special favor lord remember me when you come into your kingdom it seems surprisingly that the thief had the eyes of faith to see the true identity of jesus he knew that even though jesus looked helpless he was a king his lifestyle had been unlike that any of any other royal person that have ever lived the thief could see no fine clothing like prince harry used to wear he could see no visible following his friends had long since fled for their lives his only crown was such as it was was made from thorns and yet the thief recognized his true identity the king of kings and i need to declare for you that even though it looks like jesus is helpless based upon our days current social economic and spiritual climate i stopped by here tonight to report that he is still king that even though it looks like what you are in cannot change i'm declaring that jesus is still king in your life even nailed to a cross he has authority over a situation the second word of our savior on the cross is directed to a thief crucified along with him this word is an authentic look at what salvation is for it is by grace that you have been saved through faith and that he is not of yourselves it is the gift of god not by works so no one can boast he asks to be remembered by the lord when he entered into his kingdom and jesus replied that even that very day he would be with him in paradise i'm a witness tonight that when you can be hanging on your cross and as long as jesus is in your proximity of your persecution he can say one word that can change your life can y'all help me preach this today is a word that implies that not just in the present but also in the future today if the thief had more lines in the text he would testify and say i knew that today was a good day when the lord being on my side have you ever considered the testimony of the thief that jesus spoke to the thief's testimony is that all you need is one word that can change where you are going one word that can change your location from pain to paradise one word that can change my painful predicament to a pleasant promise one kind word can change someone's entire day can you imagine if you will that the thief's posture could no longer determine his direction i'm on my way to paradise that even though the police possibly beat him unjustly i'm on my way to paradise i'm excited even in my pain because i know where i'm going is better than where i've been have i got a witness here then jesus speaks one word today you will be with me in paradise one word paradise i'm going to paradise a place that is pardoned for my sins paradise the only access to this place is through the cross paradise peace from police brutality paradise protection from petty politics paradise uh free from viruses a paradise promises realized paradise a prepaid admission to glory paradise a place where i can see my mama and daddy again paradise where the suffering will be no more and the weary will be at rest paradise where the streets are paved with gold paradise well there are 12 gates to the city paradise where there will be howdy howdy here and there will be no more huh come and go with me to my father's house to my father's house they tell me there's joy over there in my father's house and i gotta quit but i need to understand for somebody tonight that wherever you are the hymn writer says be not dismayed whatever be god will take care of you i just stopped by here to tell somebody that god will take care of you god bless you may the lord god keep your heart but on my way to heaven i declare just one word will change your life [Music] [Music] hallelujah hallelujah come on can we just give god a allowing me to come just one more day we didn't have to be here over 500 000 died but we are still here somebody ought to say amen amen amen amen amen certainly i give praise and honor to this magnificent mighty man of god i bless you dr hames for this invitation and to your wonderful and queenly wife thank you for this opportunity i bring you greetings i am truly an a of me from the heart from the heart from the heart so i bring you greetings on behalf of our bishop bishop clement wfu and supervisor mrs alexia butler few of the fifth episcopal district of the african methodist episcopal church to my very own my god my god my god to my very own the prince my presiding elder the reverend dr harold r mayberry and first lady mary mayberry uh of the oakland san joaquin district to all of the football tears here gathered today i thank god for you but there is a word amen there is a word let us pray [Music] simply for your glory that's the only reason i'm here simply for your glory in jesus name amen amen uh i've been tasked with the third word and it is found in john the 19th chapter verses 26 and 27. and it reads jesus said to his mother woman behold your son and to to his son behold your mother it is sometime between 9 a.m and noon jesus is hanging on the cross dying a painful death because of the fear and the confusion most of his disciples those who have benefited the most from his ministry scattered but i wonder if we had been there presiding elder standing at the foot of the cross what sounds would we have heard perhaps we would have heard the hammer as it pound the nails or the whistling of the centurion's whip or the dense dud as the cross was dropped into a deep hole would we have heard the taunting and the mocking or just maybe maybe just maybe we would have heard the intense sound of jesus anguish moaning and screams of unfathomable pain perhaps we would have heard one of the thieves express his belief in jesus and like him we would have heard the lord's affirmation that he was about to wake up in paradise my beloved brothers and sisters we talk a lot about and seeing a lot about kneeling at the cross at calvary beneath the cross lead me to the cross and there is room at the cross but my beloved if the truth is told i'm not sure if any of us if we told the truth if any of us would be able to handle the sights the smells or the sound just in case you didn't catch the subject just for a thought i want to lift up listen for the sound listen for the sound however standing however standing near the cross was jesus's mother and his mother's sister mary the wife of clophas and mary magdalene then he also mentions as being present the disciple whom jesus loved these five were joined together by the love that they each had for the one hanging on the cross no doubt they tried to comfort mary but being in grief themselves i'm sure dr hames i'm sure there was very little they could do but stand by and watch it all happen like the mothers of trayvon martin michael brown patrick warren jordan edwards brianna taylor and countless others mary stood in shock not able to do anything as she watched the public execute her first born son for a crime that he did not commit she knew that it was what jesus had been called to do but that didn't help ease her pain her headache or the grief that she felt as she stood there she knew that jesus was the son of god who came to die as the savior of the world but my god she still bishop still was his mother and he was her son her firstborn at that but my beloved the bible says that jesus is hanging dying on the cross for the sins of the world as a sacrificial lamb a substitute for the punishment that we so richly deserved and and miss his pain and his agony he looks out and he sees his mother from the cross and unable to help himself but he pauses time long enough to provide for his mother he calls out woman behold thy son and son behold your mother the gospel concludes that from that time on the disciple took mary into his home in the ancient jewish community biblical legislation gave the firstborn male a special status with respect to inheritance and certain cultured rights the firstborn bore the responsibility of caring for the family mary's husband eventually must have been dead by now because no such gesture would have been necessary but there's always attention in the text so the question is for the question for us to consider today is the bible says jesus assigned john as the substitute to provide for his mother elder i was confused i was confused because according to matthew and mark they record that there in their writings that jesus had both brothers and sisters ah so why then dr jackie why would jesus not assume that his brothers and his sisters would care for his mother as they should ah well my beloved brothers i had to do some research and over in john 7 3 it says because that even his brothers did not believe ah sometimes even in our own families they will turn against us sometimes those who are charged with loving and nurturing and praying and feeding and protecting can cause some of the deepest and the worst scars but let me tell you something my beloved brothers and sisters jesus knew how his brothers felt he was fully aware of their disbelief their absence from the cross did not catch jesus by surprise if they weren't with him in life when he fed the hungry healed the lepers restored sight to the blind raise the dead stop the hemorrhaging from bleeding if they were not with him in life do you really think that they were going to be with him in death oh my god when their minds had already turned against him way before he got to cover his cross my god my god because you're biological watch this dr jackie because you're biological does not mean that we can walk hand in hand and neck and neck john john john john excuse me jesus jesus family lacked the spiritual fortitude and the capacity watch this y'all ready uh to protect the word they lack the spiritual fortitude and the capacity to protect the word the bible says their friends who are stick closer that you read it i don't know about you but i have some friends elder that i'm stuck by my side i have some friends when i thought my mama was gonna come through she didn't when i thought my daddy was coming through he didn't when i thought my sister or my brother were coming through they didn't but i come to tell you i've got some friends that stick closer than a brother i have some friends that come to see me when i'm sick put food on my table when my husband was in the nursing home i have some friends yes i do but let me tell you this i got to hurry up y'all sit down y'all sit down i got to hurry up y'all going to make me preach too hard i got to do eulogy in the morning oh lord have mercy but i got to tell y'all something can i tell you something oh elder i got to tell you the truth i'm glad jesus did not entrust his mother to his brothers ah because if they had touched if if jesus had entrusted his mother to some unbelievers if jesus had ca had turned the carrier of the word woman over to his unbelieving brothers and sisters it would have disrupted god's kingdom plan to spread the good news throughout the land huh ask me how i know ask may ask me dr rodney how do i know well amos puts it right here it's in the texas in the text in amos 3 and 3 he said how can two walk together unless they first lady mary agree amos assumes that when you see two people walking down the street they have already met in an agreement well the bible says that they did not believe they did not believe my beloved brothers and sisters if they had if jesus had turned mary the carrier a word over to his brothers it would have caused a disruption in the plans of jesus and because hallelujah because he didn't the bible says in first corinthians 1 and 10 brothers and sisters in the name of jesus christ it is better for you to be perfectly unified in mind and in spirit watch this my beloved when jesus turned mary over to john it was because john and jesus had a relationship and because of it it became an apostolic order apostolic order what am i saying my god my god there would have been a disruption and because jesus knew that his family was it had did not have the ability he trusted john the bible says that he loved john there was an apostolic anointing in other words the flow of the holy spirit continued to flow my god the bible says in isaiah 43 and 19 god says i'm going to do a new thing in other words i'm getting ready to create a new family hallelujah i'm going to do a new thing it was john the baptist who said in the wilderness prepare ye the way for the kingdom of heaven is at hand my beloved brothers and sisters because he entrusted watch this i told you to listen for the sound well in the latin term the latin term for sun is sound and sound occurs as vibrations or travel in the air y'all gonna help me preach this thing don't yeah yeah vibrations travel through the air and can only be heard in the ears of the intended person for this reason my god the bible says let those who have ears let them hear in other words to be a son of god he's not speaking gender he's speaking belief if you believe on jesus the christ you must hit me if you're ready for it you must believe that you have the ear to hear what god is saying if you believe that you are a son of god you must believe that god created a unique ability for us to worship my beloved brothers and sisters what if what is the sound wow the bible says in heaven their sounds are trumpets in heaven they're angels in heaven they're a host of witnesses what is that sound my beloved brothers and sisters can i preach it like i feel it can i go absolutely outrageous i hear the lord saying can i preach like a feeling i hear god saying in these last hours there is a sound being released from heaven that's going destroy every yoke there is a sound that's coming from heaven that's gonna cause cancer to dissipate there is there is that is a sound that's gonna cause racism classism that separation there's a sound that's gonna cause the demons to tremble and to flee my god my god let me tell you something i said i was going to be good because i'm in charlotte ham church but somewhere i looked up and i saw i looked like john when i was in that nursing home and they said i only had five months to live i looked up and i looked into the heavens and i had a sound from heaven they fear not for i am with you i heard when my husband was sick i looked again up in heaven [Music] i believe [Music] let me tell you something i'm gonna close this thing cause i'm about to lose my mind elder my son was about stuff that comes with it i took my baby to the disney store somehow dr jackie he and i got oh we were uh disconnected and i'm looking around in the store and i can't see my son i'm waiting trying to find my son and all of a sudden now i hear this little bitty voice saying mama mama i hear him saying mama oh mama but i couldn't see him i didn't know where he was but i heard the holy ghost say just our host dr charlie haynes for his wonderful hospitality come on i i need you clapping virtually amen shout out to the coolest the flyest i mean bruh bruh that's my big bro y'all amen brother just fly amen matthew chapter 27 matthew chapter 27 verse 46. this is word number four the new international virgin says about three in the afternoon jesus cried out in a loud voice eli eli lama sabathany which means my god my god why have you forsaken me the new living translation says my god my god why have you abandoned me my brothers and sisters if i was to tag this tonight why have you forsaken me i want to slash that which set the record straight set the record straight that word forsaken means to be an outcast stranded discarded it means to have void or to be friendless forsaken to be forsaken means that you have experienced some level of being ignored in this pandemic we have been away from each other we have been separated and some of us have even felt forsaken that word abandoned means to give up completely to throw in the towel abandon means to give up or to discontinue any further interest in something because of discouragement weariness the bible says here as jesus is suffering on the cross he's in between breaths because his life in the physical form of the way he knew it is getting ready to be taken from him and he screams out because now the pain has gotten so hard to bear that jesus says to his father why have you forsaken me my brothers and sisters there are 37 miracles there are 37 miracles that we know jesus performed and every one of those 37 miracles that jesus performed every time he did something god the father was with him you you remember jesus turned the water into wine at a wedding in canada in cana you you remember jesus heals a noble man's son in carprenium jesus drives out devils and spirits in a man in galilee jesus heals peter's mother-in-law sick with a fever jesus heals many sick and oppressed one evening jesus has a miraculous catch of fish jesus cleanses a man with leprosy jesus heals a centurial paralyzed servant and every single time that jesus did that god the father was with him you you you bible scholars remember jesus healed the paralytic that was let down from the roof y'all remember that jesus heals a man with a withered hand on the sabbath jesus raised a widow's son from the dead jesus calms a storm on the sea jesus cast down demons into the herds of pig jesus heals a woman with an issue of blood jesus raises jairus daughter back to life jesus heals two blind men every time jesus did a miracle god the father god the father was with him you you you know 37 times jesus heals a man and uh unable to speak jesus heals a man who had an infirmity for 38 years jesus feeds 5 000 jesus walks on the water jesus had many people who were sick and he touched them in consideration jesus heals a demon who is in a woman and has possessed her daughter jesus heals a deaf and dumb man jesus feeds again 4 000 women men plus children every time jesus did something every time jesus did some god the father was with him jesus jesus for the 25th miracle jesus heals another blind man and heals a blind man and spits on his eyes jesus heals a boy with an unclean spirit you you know the tax collector jesus heals a blind and a mute man again jesus heals a woman who had been crippled for 18 years jesus heals a man on the seventh jesus cleanses ten lepers and every time jesus heals somebody god the father was with him jesus raises lazarus from the dead jesus restores by father mew jesus curses at a fig tree and it withers up jesus heals a man uh after after one of his boys cut his ears off and he's being arrested the second time jesus catches some more fish and every time jesus did a miracle god the father was with him i'm wrapping up now because i've got a question for you tonight why in the world for 37 times jesus performs these miracles for for every time in his life that jesus needed god the father god the father was with him but but he's on the cross now and his body and his energy is being zapped from him he's on the cross and and he yells out god why have you forsaken me i'm wondering tonight is there anybody in facebook land is there anybody in the world watching tonight who knows what it's like for god to be with you when you got the job for is there anybody who knows what it was like when god was with you when you got married the first time is there anybody who's ever gone through public humiliation with folk talked about you like a doll god you was with me all them other times why in the world would you bring me to this point and forsake me he says he says he says he says god god why why have you forsaken me and here's what i want to give you i'm going to go to my seat god why have you abandoned me anybody ever been abandoned out there y'all don't fool me anybody know what it's like to be left by yourself anybody know what it's like to have folks smiling your face while they're turning the knife anybody know what it's like to have to come to the church and you sitting on one pew and your ex sitting on the next pew and the choir are talking about you is there anybody up in here who knows what it's like to be talked about on the job to be talked about in the family and jesus steps back he's on the cross he says father father why have you forsaken me here it is watch this because god because god needs to get the glory out of your pain i wish i had some folk who came to worship tonight i i wish somebody wasn't too cute wasn't too boozy to put that wig back and say god every time i look back in your life you were with me when i was broke as a joke you were with me when i was trying to get the degree you were with me when i was sick you were with me when i went through the breakup you were with me when i had the baby you were with me when i raised them by myself why in the world in the middle of a pandemic would you leave me now and what i hear god say i'm going to use your pain to get the glory can i get about 20 of y'all who ain't too afraid to say get the glory god get the glory can you praise god for all the hell you've been through god you will get the glory you get the glory you get the glory and so here jesus is on the cross folk looking at them laughing at them cause you know everybody that's smiling your face all the time trying to take your place they're backstabbers but are there any anointed people of god who came on a good friday that serves a good god that can say god i thank you for all the hell i've ever been through in my life god i thank you for everybody who tried to kill me god i thank you for everybody who laughed at me he's on the cross he's feeling abandoned but what i hear god say is that everything you've been through everything you're going through i am going to raise you up because through your pain through your tears through your hardships i will get the glory [Music] my god my god why has thou forsaken you to get the glory out of your pain [Music] let's let's give god some praise for those amazing words come on you can do it wherever you are in the universe come on put your hands together and give god some praise in my my my mind these have been some preaching uh phenoms here tonight we are grateful and thankful during this moment uh this is at the half mark we have three more preachers to go and i'm excited about them amen they've been on this journey all along amen and i can't wait to hear them but before we do that we have to worship our giving i want to encourage you to go to givlify right now that's our preferred method of giving go to giblify look up bb memorial cathedral and the first line you will see is seven last words we put this uh program together because not only the community asked for it but we have been doing it and it has now become a bay area tradition and i'm grateful and thankful for these pastors that sacrificed their time from their busy schedules to be with us tonight uh to make this our service so as you give tonight i encourage you to give at least fifty dollars amen if the lord has called you to give more please give more i gave a hundred because i believe in not only this ministry but for this moment so as you give tonight i'm grateful and thankful for you but please go to giblify right now give and the bible declares given it shall be given unto you press down shaken together running over shall men given to your bosom for with the same measure you meet it shall be measured unto you again come on and give god some praise again for the ability to give amen i'm going to get out the way i'm grateful for pastor rodney smith we thank god for his lovely first lady but before i introduce the next three i gotta go home tonight amen and i'm grateful amen that i'm not my i've been amen but i have 20 20 vision i'm grateful for my first lady amen my only lady amen michelle gosselin amen praise god for amen next three voices that you will hear before these amazing singers come back to bless us will be the fifth word this sister has been a friend of mine for more than 15 years in fact the late tommy ford comedian connected us together and we've been friends ever since she is the senior pastor of the allen temple baptist church oakland california jacqueline thompson and i don't know about you but i'm grateful for this man of god who's always poured into me kind words encouragement but more importantly he is a man of prayer he is the senior pastor of the glad titans church of god in christ the first assistant bishop of the church of god in christ international bishop j.w macklin the sixth word and i often tease him but i really mean it the seventh word and i'm grateful somebody said well how you always get the seventh word because i'm playing the program amen somebody amen and i'm grateful for him because he is one of my favorite preachers none other than the senior pastor the mount calvary baptist church fairfield sassoon dr claybun lee jr i'm telling y'all it's getting ready to get better let's receive this ministry of music so you came and changed my life you thought i was worth keeping you sacrifice your life so i can be free so i can be whole so i can tell everyone i know you cleaned me life so i can be free [Music] me [Applause] if [Music] thank you [Music] forever [Music] glory because i am [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] forever [Music] forever [Music] [Music] [Music] you thought i was worth saving i thank you lord you came and changed my life you thought i was worth keeping [Music] so you cleaned me up inside you thought i was to die grateful lord you thought i was to die for so you sacrifice your life so i can be free hallelujah come on into grateful giveaway praise on tonight he thought you were worth it he died for you and he died for me he deserves the glory and he deserves the honor and we worship him on tonight praise the lord everybody nothing has changed with me even in a pain give me praise for lord everybody i know you've been wondering but nothing has changed i will bless the lord at all times his praise shall continually be in my mouth i'm wondering if there's anybody out there online that don't mind magnifying the lord with me come on let's exalt his name together is there anybody that can testify even in the midst of a pamphlet that god has still been good and god is worthy to be praised oh i don't know about you but i don't need a church full of people because god seems so good to me i can bless them all all by myself but the bible says wherever two or three of godliness it is already in the midst so i dare you to just put your hands together open up your mouth and get your glory on a good prize [Music] back in the day when we were you know when i was young salvation was all you needed to shout off of you didn't need a new house you didn't need a new car god didn't have to do anything but see nowadays we only praise him when we get something but is there anybody that knows that god hasn't saved me oh i know you've been good all your life let me talk to the saints over here anybody can testify if god had not saved me i would have been somewhere out of my mind crazy then a long time ago i need just two folk to put your hands together for salvation cause saving me lady mayberry was a work my mentor says god did what my mama tried to do and what my daddy couldn't do he saved me and on a good friday i'm glad about it come on class clap right where you are in the chat put some hands up let's celebrate the great pastor of this house we thank god for my friend and my brother dr charlie hayes amen keep clapping for the new pastor that i'm happy to meet amen dr smith it's a pleasure to meet you for all of these wonderful preachers tonight it is always good to be with you it's good to be in the land of the living because i recognize i don't live because i've been so good but the bible says morning by morning brand new mercy and silver hams if it wasn't for mercy that was new i'd have been going a long time ago because some of us use up our mercy every day but i'm grateful they're right at midnight i get a new dose of mercy we are at the fifth word and the bible says in the gospel of john chapter 19 verse 28 after this knowing that everything had been accomplished that scripture might be fulfilled jesus said i thirst i need you to do me a favor right where you are even socially distant somewhere in the chat just tell somebody i'm not dead yet they were the wrong person i need you to find somebody else type it again in the chat even if you say it to yourself just tell them i'm not dead yet come on and i know we in here it's just a few of us but is there anybody that just want to declare to the devil right now you tried it you gave it your best shot but guess what i'm not dead yet [Music] by the time we get to this fifth word dr mayberry we have already rehearsed all of the things that jesus has been through we have rehearsed what jesus has been through psychologically what jesus has been through physically what jesus has been through emotionally what jesus has been through spiritually by the time we get to this fifth word we have already talked about all of the brutality all of the torture all of everything that jesus had to endure to make it to this actual moment generally by the time you get to the fifth word dr hames there is some attempt to explain why jesus said these words and moreover there's some kind of attempt to make a hermeneutical transfer to make it applicable to our lives today by the time you get to this fifth word there is somebody trying to explain to us why jesus said i thirst and we hear all kinds of reasons when we get to this word we hear the obvious reason which is physical of course jesus has been tortured that he is bleeding that he has lost fluids by sweating have a crown of thorns in his head by the heat from hanging in the middle eastern sun so we know there was a physical reason that we always hear and then there's a spiritual reason there are people that get up and say no it wasn't just a physical thirst that jesus was somehow thirsty for god that that it was something very deep that jesus was doing on the cross at this time and then we even get a little biblical symbolism where we say the thirst is not really a thirst it is really a hunger and a desire for the salvation of souls but i'm suggesting to you that i i think there's something a little different going on here but just give me two minutes to lay it out can i have two minutes to lay it out by the time we get to this fifth word there is generally a tip to celebrate the fact that the gospel of john lifts up not only the divinity of jesus but the humanity of jesus they lift up the fifth word and they say it is proof that jesus was fully human and also fully divine we know that john's gospel was written to counteract the heresies that were taking place in the day that said jesus could not be fully human and still be god y'all know docetism yo your children aren't the first ones to believe that jesus wasn't really human it happened all the way back during jesus's time so there's always an attempt to say that jesus was human and so i pause right here and i really do celebrate that because in the midst of a pandemic i need a jesus that understands where i am i need a jesus that understands i'm sick of being sheltered in place and and i'm sick of not going where i want to go and not doing what i want to do i miss the people and i need a human jesus that knows what it's like to want to cuss sometimes can i talk to real saints and that knows what it's like to want to tell some folk what they really should have been told alone i need a human jesus that can identify [Applause] with all of the things that we struggle with in our humanity so i celebrate that the fifth word is somehow a reflection of the humanity of jesus and yet at the same time they don't stop there they go on to suggest that that not only is it just a reflection of the humanity of jesus but that somehow in this fifth word on the cross when he says i thirst that jesus is somehow revealing to us the power of purpose because i've come to know that the one thing the pandemic has revealed is folk who understood their purpose and folk who didn't understand their purpose i didn't come to hurt nobody but i came to just tell the truth there are some people that couldn't make the adjustment when the doors closed because you were off mission and purpose when the doors were already open because anybody who understood what the real mission of jesus was when the doors closed understood that the mission was always outside the church so we just kept doing what we had always been [Applause] they suggest the purpose of jesus is being revealed in this moment and there's some there's some truth there i appreciate that jesus even on the cross having been crucified remains on mission hanging there brutalized still forgiving his enemies hanging there brutalized still saving sinners hanging there brutalized still taking care of his family hanging there brutalized still with a devotional life talking not to his father but to his god but when we get to the fifth word it is the first time that we see a jesus who is honest about his own needs when he says i thirst and firstly i can handle it if if we could just leave it right there but but see i believe in a different kind of jesus i believe in that subversive jesus that jesus who came to overthrow everything that jesus who specialized in making good trouble that jesus who came to upset even religious authorities that's the jesus that i see in the gospel so it's hard for me to believe that hanging on the cross this is somehow just about his physical or his spiritual needs i'm suggesting to you dr roz pray with me that when jesus said at first he was making a declaration that he was saying to his enemies yes you trying to kill me but i'm not dead yet i know you don't understand it let me help you i have a mother that i'm now a caregiver for who is in her final days so they say she was released on hospice in december and so even though i went through that with my dad you always have to learn what it means when people are in their final days and one of the things they tell you is that when they lose their appetite and when they lose their desire for water that death is near but as long as they can say i first that means they still got a little bit of life in them so is there anybody that can believe like me that when jesus was hanging there when he said i first he was saying you trying to kill me but i ain't ready to go yet i told you earlier you're not going to take my life i'm going to lay it down and i'm going to pick it back up again how do you know [Applause] [Music] and how can you declare after everything we've been through that you're not dead yet [Applause] because when jesus said i thirst scripture says after this knowing everything had been accomplished so there really was nothing else that could have been or needed to be said seven last words could have been five last words from the text that we read but i've come to know that as long as god still got something to say then you're not dead yet it don't matter what it look like it don't matter what a doctor says don't matter what you go through as long as god is still speaking and jesus rejected the first time they offered him something to drink but on this point he said i first why because i still got something to say it ain't over yet is there anybody that needs god to speak a word over your situation speak a word over your life as a reminder yeah you might be killing me but i'm not dead family full of confusion but we ain't dead yet folk trying to put you down talk about you it don't matter i ain't dead yet what'd you say see that's what the previous administration didn't understand [Music] [Applause] that all the stuff you tried we had already been there before so if we made it off the coast of africa and we made it on the bottom of the ships and we made it to the edge of virginia and we made it to slavery and we made it through jim crow and we made it through civil rights and we made it through black power and we made it through the first black president and the first black female vice president so roar then you think anything you try can kill us cause god is still speaking still saying i got more for your life still saying my favor is upon you still saying that i'm opening doors i need somebody to type in the chat text somebody call somebody and say yeah you tried it but i'm not dead [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] my sister you know you know that ain't right [Music] lord have mercy well i guess that means that the pattern here is to just go short i got it i got that i got that praise the name of the lord wow may the lord bless each of you that are here this evening it is so good to be back in the house of the lord here at bb memorial i'm glad to be back you all have been doing a lot of work around here you didn't let that pandemic slow you up one bit dr mayberry my dear friend lady mayberry love you all so much to all of these wonderful speakers who have blessed us tonight thank you so much and you all can sit down i don't have that much to say no way just have a seat have a seat i'm just amazed at all of the work that's been going on here my goodness just so so good to see dr claybonne lee was that cross here when i was here last it looks different is it still was it that color and how who engraved them those words on there you know look right across the arm of it now well pastor that's that's ingenious that's great i like that i don't know how i missed it boy that is something how y'all doing god bless your hearts let me get through with what i need to say this has been wonderful we welcome all of our newer pastors to this um time of our sharing and coming together i understand now it's been what 16 years and i think that i have been a part of all of the services and ministered i think this is the 15th time you know what i'm finished [Music] john 19 and 30. i had problems with this and i was trying to find out who was preaching the last word and they told me it was dr claiborne lee my problem was yes i was trying to use all of the hermeneutical tools that they gave us and principles of exegeting the text all of that but my problem was i couldn't seem to separate this verse into two sermons i don't know because it says when jesus therefore had received the vinegar he said it is finished it looked like they should have just put a period there and started another verse but that's not quite the way it turns out and they just continue writing after this colon is there and said he bowed his head and gave up the ghost now i can't talk about bowing his head and gave up the ghost because that's not my assignment but if the next person coming to speak doesn't do this right my assignment will have been messed up because i can only talk about the first part and if you don't like the first part stick around for the second part it's interesting isn't it that um these words it is finished seems to only be found in this gospel now there are references in all of the others but it's only in this gospel that we find the words it is finnish the best commentary on the word is the word you can read the best of all but the best commentary is the word of god itself so when you read hebrews 9 and 24 you get a better understanding of john 19 and 30. christ has entered not into holy place made with hands which are copies of the true themes but into heaven itself now to appear in the presence of god on our behalf because it was finished nor was it to offer himself repeatedly as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood and not his own for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world was finished but as it is he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself because it was finished nobody takes my life i i lay it down but i'm not gonna lay it down until i am finished there's some things you can't do until you finish i wonder can i talk to somebody just for a moment sometimes when people try to do stuff before they're finished with what they were supposed to do it never works out you have to finish what you assign before you go any further there is much that has been finished that has not been finished may i say that one more time god bless these wonderful wonderful preachers here tonight there is much that has been finished that has not been finished court trials have finished the gavel has come the down has taken off his robe and went in the back the jury has been dismissed but the case really wasn't finished don't make me call the road fighters in the ring have fought somebody thought that sugar ray lennon was finished because he lost first to duran only to come back and fight one more time until he heard the words no moss some misinterpreted the civil rights act of 1964 and perhaps even 57 but 64 in particular and assume that because there were some people around the desk and a signing of something had happened that that meant that everybody was now free but it was not finished today there are many perhaps who thought that the election of a president and a black vice president and then the first senator from georgia black senator my dear friend many people thought wow it's over it's finished but may i remind you that standing in 100 degree heat without a bottle of water is not yet finished president bush many years ago stood on a fighter ship and lifted a banner and flew it for the whole world to see that said mission accomplished but thousands would die afterwards because it was not finished can i talk to you a little while may i remind all of us that our enemy has not laid down his weapons of war but i need to tell them that what they're fighting for is a losing cause because our christ has already declared that it is finished the enemy of our soul rejoices shouts victory as if he has won but perhaps have not yet received the news that christ must ring mm-hmm until every enemy has been defeated till every enemy has been brought down low sometimes i just sit back and laugh at those who think they are something sometimes i just sit back and i'm not in their circle but i just sit back and laugh at people who think they are mr big stuff you got to be careful that you don't allow who you're not to convince you that you are kings and potentates presidents governors magistrates generals ceo chairmans corporate tycoons sometimes get caught up in their title but there is one title that they cannot have and that is the title of christ our lord the problem with these so-called big shots is that they cannot tell time correctly they can read the clock on the wall and they call that cronus but they don't understand that there is another clock that's called keras that is the moment of god at our little church there in hayward california just right down the road a little piece as you walk out the sanctuary i'll never forget i went out and i think it was right about this time of the year that i went out and bought some clocks because i didn't have a clock in my church for many years somebody said why didn't you put a clock in there i said cause y'all be watching and ain't finished preaching but finally i put some clocks that i didn't just get worn i got several of them and they have different countries we have the united states but we have europe and we have this country in that country and then finally the last clock is a clock that has no arms and somebody said i can't tell what time it is i said but be sure it's winding up i wonder can i talk to somebody i know i need to be finished now finish is not the end of your turn finish is not the time that means it's run out finish is not uh the interpretation that the election is over finished does not mean that the budget is now out of money does not mean that the season has come to a close no that's not what finish means in this text significant because the perfect tense speaks to us of an action which has been completed in the past with results that continue into the present and that means that what christ did on the cross when he said it is finished it meant that his words my god are still echoing to us today that it is finished sometimes people look at us and try and tell us that our put our christ put jesus on the mental place of multiple choice and put him up there with all of the other gods and give people a chance to choose their god but when they do that they make a mistake and forget that somebody tried that once before and they took the ark of the covenant into where their god was you're not gonna let me talk to you and they left him there and when they came back the next morning their god had fallen over because there is no god that can stand with our god nah no there's not i wonder can i talk to somebody today glory to god hallelujah oh bless the name of the lord let me tell you my friends that word that word that says it is finished is a powerful word and that means that all battles that come afterwards have already been decided there on the cross in the darkness my god the earth shaking like a drunken man the moon that has now turned red and the sun that will not shine and now we have the blood oh the blood hold the blood whoa the blood oh the blood oh the blood oh the blood the blood of jesus running down his side the spear that brought out water and blood the beating of his body his bruised body hebrews 9 reminds us he did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves but he entered the most holy place once and for all by his own blood having obtained eternal redemption but now he's appeared once and for all at the end of ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself oh the blood the blood the blood the blood the yeah i can't hardly finish this thinking about the blood of jesus i'm trying to get up out of here now there were four distinct pictures of this word finished the first word that reminds us of this picture is the servant who completed his test and when he finished what he was assigned he turned around and shouted back to his master it is finished i want you to know that i've completed the task the next word that comes to mind there's a word picture about an artist who would complete his painting with the lifting of the brush and after the painting had been finished he took the brush and put the last dash of ink on the painting and then it is finishing oh glory to god and what a word picture it is i've always wondered what color paint he used somebody said it was red blue black or whatever you want to call it but i believe that the real painting was painted with the blood of christ and it was the lord's blood that covered the canvas like the blood that covers my life i wonder do i have a few more moments to finish now can you see the picture of christ painted with his blood and the bill my god that was old is the third picture of the word finish and that's when you had a bill to pay worked on it week by week month by month year by year but finally you got a receipt and in the receipt the word what across the top said finished it means there's no more payments there's no more do there's no more time to add it is finished is there anybody here that knows what it's like to finish that bill and then finally there is a fourth picture and it's the picture of the priesthood in the jewish holiday on the day of atonement now the high priest would enter into the temple the people waited along outside waiting for the priest to come out he had been there before he'd been there with a bull and a goat he'd been there with lambs and doves and pigeons but on this day he's coming out my god because the animal is taken on the inside and there they literally believed that they could put their sins upon the animal's head and then the priest would cut the animal's throat and kill the animal and come out with blood on his hand all the blood come out with the bloody hands and shout it is finished oh my brothers well come on son let's go home oh my brothers hallelujah they thought that was finished but next year sister they had to come back again and the next year they had to come back again and the next year they had to come back again and the next year they had to come back again but jesus came and said wait a minute i'm not coming back no more i'm going to die until it's all paid for yes how much i hope for love divine how much i hope that christ is mine but what he died for me i know i cannot tell how much i owe is there anybody that knows you you ought to give him a praise because of what he did on your behalf oh glory to god he said it is finished my brothers and sisters there is 7 billion 846 million people in the world in north america south america europe australia the antarctic can i talk to somebody but i came by to tell you that even with asia and africa there are a lot of people there is six thousand five hundred languages that are spoken and when i travel overseas they have to give me an interpreter to help me preach to the people in indonesia i was preaching to 15 000 people but i had to have an interpreter now i don't want to get mixed up here because i know where i am but can i be myself i want you to know yeah yeah yeah sister rise can i tell you i want you to know i was preaching that night y'all ain't gonna like this part but while i was preaching the place was covered and many of them were muslims and many were eastern religions they were all in that house but as i was preaching my interpreter got caught up in the spirit and toward the end of my message i looked over and the interpreter was acting like my sister was dancing and calling all over the place i said lord i'm not finished preaching i have a little bit more to go but i don't have an interpreter but i saw the holy spirit step in told me keep on preaching and i i will interpret it if i am lifted up i would draw all men under me my brother and my sisters can i tell you what happened i kept on preaching and the holy spirit began to interpret and when i looked up there were people running down the aisle didn't speak my language but they understood what the spirit was saying i've got to close 7 billion 846 million wherever they are whatever continent they are if they will look to the cross they will see a word across the cross that says it is finished i've already come i've already died it's already over yes my brothers and sisters wherever you are whatever your language whatever your status i i've got good news you don't have to fight this war no more it is over you don't have to die in yourself it is over our neighborhoods don't have to be overrun because it is over now i dare you to look over at somebody and get them indeed it is it is it is finished and that's why on sunday morning we're getting ready to send up a shout out it's easter sunday yes yes we're getting ready to shout because it is it's finished yeah oh now dr lee come on man come on brother come on preacher you got to finish this you got the last word it's all somebody give the man a microphone you're the man of mike so he can finish this my god i'm trying to tell you this thing is finished but my god but you can't just leave him on the cross saying it's finished something got to happen bye bye y'all my my come on give it up for bishop jerry wayne macklin the one and only praise god if he modulated one more time lord have mercy amen i want to just uh have this station identification before dr lee comes uh many of you all been uh sending offering praise god amen but we know that you want to give so i just want to emphasize go to giblify right now you can give your gift and god is going to do the rest let us receive now dr clayvon lee this is indeed the day that the lord has made we rejoice and we are glad in it dr hames thank you so much for this privilege to come and share yet again another year give god thanks for you and for lady haines we give god thanks for you and for dr mayberry and lady mayberry we're just so delighted to see you and thank god for you your kindness down through the years your encouragement and your prayers and to all of these preachers including bishop macklin that have come before me i am grateful to stand before you the final utterance of our lord jesus from the cross is recorded by dr luke in his gospel chapter 23 verse 46. jesus called out with a loud voice father into your hands i commit my spirit when he had said this he breathed his last in 1992 terry mcmillan wrote a book that became a movie directed by forest whitaker featuring whitney houston and angela bassett along with a great cadre of other phenomenal actors the book and the movie were entitled waiting to exhale and without having asked for miss mcmillan's permission that's what i want to tag this text with tonight waiting to exhale i ask you to keep your bibles open do your best not to go to sleep i won't be long jesus has been waiting for this moment for an eternity in one sense and all day long in another sense the apotheosis of providence has caused kairos and chronos to converge the whole world has been holding its breath especially those in jerusalem where jesus is being lynched on a tree outside of the city gate the sanhedrin has been holding its breath hoping that he would not come down from the cross mary john and the other disciples have been holding their breath hoping that jesus would come down from the cross pilate has been holding his breath because he knew that he was the supreme court justice of the day who knowingly sentenced an innocent man to death satan has been holding his breath wondering if death he his reigning undisputed heavyweight champion of the world with a record of billions of wins and only two losses would be able to retain his championship belt even death the reigning undisputed heavyweight champion of the world was panting and out of breath because death had never had to struggle with anyone until he tried to take on jesus christ yet jesus has made breathing look and sound no less than manageable for hours he never lost control of his breathing he's been hanging there all day long from morning till noon he has spoken at least six times and now is speaking a seventh time and at no time did jesus lose his breath lest we forget you need a significant amount of breath to cause your vocal cords and your larynx to vibrate in order to give enough volume and vibration to your words so that they might be heard and even with what some doctors would consider to be collapsing lungs jesus christ having completed his assignment on the cross now does what he's been waiting to do he's been waiting to exhale finally he exhales finally he breathes the bible says he breathed kids last his exhale was inextricably connected to this final utterance from the cross where he says aloud father into your hands i commit my spirit this final statement of our savior was one of relegation he says if your bible is open and you're not going to sleep here it is father into your hands i commit my spirit peritethem i is the greek word here for entrust to to place in the care of parathamy to deposit it's a banking finance term where one deposits something into an account jesus is here on the cross and his last utterance is one of relegation where he says i've got to put my life somewhere and if i'm going to put it anywhere if i'm going to deposit it into any place i'm going to deposit it into the hands of my father i don't have time but if i did i just talk about his hands can you put in god's hands your tragedy can you trust god with your tragedy can you place your pain your problems your perplexities and even your persecution in god's hands can you relinquish both your resolved and especially your unresolved issues to god's hands can you exhale on your way into the operating room and trust your life in god's hands when you don't know if you'll come out alive can you exhale after your case has been argued in the court of law and the jury leaves the courtroom to deliberate your fate that you know not jesus reaches a point of relegation where he says there's nothing else for me to do except to place my life in my father's hands it's not only a statement of relegation it's a statement of resistance because jesus says father i commit into your hands i commit this is resistance this is political resistance this this is spiritual resistance because jesus did not die dr jackie on the state's terms jesus did not die dr haynes on the religious establishment's terms no jesus died on his own terms oh it's been said but i might as well say it again jesus becomes the personification of how he had already uttered that no one takes my life but i lay it down of my own accord and if i lay it down i will pick it back up again jesus says this is a word of resistance you are not killing me you are not taking my life i give my life i commit you don't take unlike george floyd and eric who could not breathe because of the state's knee on a neck and strong arm choke hold around the neck jesus resisted death on the state's terms he decided when he would breathe his last he's been waiting to exhale and this final statement is one of relegation it's one of resistance but it's also one of redemption when he says i i commit my spirit father into your hands he's quoting from psalm 31 verse 5. when he gets to this point the end of psalm 31 verse 5 that is not in luke's texts but is in jesus mind is where david says you have redeemed me oh lord faithful god you have redeemed me oh god faithful god but when he says this this means his last words were filled with faith confidence and strength from the scriptures his last words were filled with gratitude for god's deliverance and god sustaining strength through all of his sufferings his last words were filled with the expectation of receiving in return what he was depositing into god's hands with interest at the appointed time when he says oh god i commit my spirit into your hands he's making a statement of expectation because dr mayberry anytime you make a deposit you do so expecting that at a certain time you'll be able to make a withdrawal you'll be able to redeem you'll be able to get back that which you have given up but here's the final thing and i bid you good evening my time is up jesus has been waiting to exhale and he gives this final utterance of relegation and this final utterance of resistance this final utterance of redemption but here it is then he gives this utterance of relief relief he breathed his lash i already reminded you y'all that he's been out there on the cross all day long early in the morning they took him to golgotha's hill and they nailed his hands and nailed his feet and pierced his side the sun was beaming down on him until 12 noon when the s-u-n had to bow to the s-o-n there jesus hangs and when jesus finally makes this utterance he breathes his last he exhales with a shout of victory marathon runners take deep breaths throughout their race especially in the toughest parts of the race but when they cross the finish line however they exhale they exhale because it's a declaration of completion in other words i have completed what i set out to do and now i'm not just breathing i'm ex-healing because i have done what i came here to do and so it was with jesus he could exhale because he had assuaged god's wrath he could exhale because humanity's sin debt had been paid in full he could finally exhale because he made it possible for the unrighteous to become righteous he could finally exhale because he could finally say that he had reconciled the estranged back to god and he could finally exhale because he finally personified god's justice do you hear me he could exhale because he was now in a place where he could give unconditional forgiveness to all who stood in need he could finally exhale because the middle wall of partition had finally been broken down and the veil in the temple had finally been torn into he could exhale because full access to the throne had finally been secured he could finally exhale [Music] the new covenant had now replaced the old covenant signed sealed and delivered in his blood good night y'all uh may the lord order your steps he was waiting to exhale and when jesus breathed out his life and he breathed his last breath something happened when life went out of him up it popped up in a centurion and all of a sudden a centurion said surely this must be the son of god my brothers and my sisters when he breathed out his laughs then he breathed nervousness into the roman government inclusivity into an exclusive prejudice and sexist theology when he breathed his last he breathe unity into the face of division when he breathed his last hebrew love into an atmosphere of hate when he breathed out his last he breathed words of hematology into him writers so somebody could pull out a pen and begin to write the word there is a fountain filled with blood strong from emmanuel's veins [Applause] sinners plunge beneath that flood lose all their guilt and sting then another hymn writer picked up his pen and he said jesus paid it all all up to him i already had left the crimson stain but he washed white ass snow then another hymn writer picked up his pen and said at the cross at the cross where i first saw the light and the burnings of my heart rolled rolled away it was there by faith i received my sight and and and now i'm happy all the day then the old saints picked it up and they started singing i know it was the blood i know it was the blood i know it was the blood from me one day when i was lost he died upon the cross i wish the church was full didn't he die he died upon the cross aren't you glad he died he died on the cross and i know it was the blood from me then one more kim writer picked up his pen and said the blood that she said by me way way way way back home calvary the blood that gives me strength anybody feel strength the blood that gives me shrimp not games but gibbs right now his blood gives me strength from day to day and it will never ever ever lose its power it reaches [Music] to the highest mountain close to the lowest valley it will never ever never ever lose its power [Music] yes
