everyone is Robert you're watching sidestep Adventures I'm out here with Cody my backyard just goes to show you you don't know what's in your backyard unless you get out and explore so I was riding back roads today and pass this place and just slam what my breaks turned around came back I'm about to show it to you right now so we're in spring villa park located in Opelika Alabama which I didn't even realize I made it all the way to Opelika driving backroads and this house is very cool with a lot of history we're gonna take a look inside in just a minute but first I'll walk out or around it and read you the history off this pamphlet sorry [Music] apologize about the wind noise it's a very windy day here in Georgia or Alabama I should say so spring villa dates back to 1850 when william penn young the original owner built his home of English descent young moved to this area from Virginia as a well-educated engineer and married Mary and got of Gerard Alabama the original spring villa plantation consisted of 455 acres was a showplace during mr. Young's lifetime a resort for family and friends and the scene of elaborate social gatherings and sporting events a centennial celebration was staged at spring villa during the week of July 4 1876 with several thousand attending it is appropriate that on July 3rd 1976 several hundred Opelika and Lee County citizens of all ages enjoyed an old-fashioned day at Spring Villa as part of Oakland Tenniel celebration Penn Young planned lavishly for his guests with beautiful landscaping tropical flowers and ported trees horse racing and a crystal-clear 30 acre lake fed from the spring guests toward the lake filled with tropical fish and surrounded by weeping willow trees and glass-bottom boats to a beautiful island for walks and picnics some original willow trees and portions of the lake bed and dam are still visible after 1888 the property had several owners with the city of Opelika purchasing the area in 1927 for water supply later it was deeded to the state for a state park but deeded back to the city in 1939 the original Hall burned in the late 1920s but was rebuilt in 1934 by the old CWA at which time the rear annex was added an exact style during this period the late 1930s a Boy Scout committee led by dr. Oscar Tatum developed Spring Villa as a Boy Scout camp and made numerous improvements including the no longer existing springfed swimming pool the park board began operating Springville in 1946 with the Water Works board assuming ownership in 1948 the spring is still an emergency water supply for Opelika all right so this house has a haunted history behind it - and we're gonna see the spot where the legend started in just a minute when we go inside but first I'm going to tell you about it pin Young had many slaves and worked to them very hard although he was a gracious host he was a demanding task master the story says the pin young was killed by one of his slaves the slave seeking revenge for harsh punishment hid one night I'm trying to block the wind while I read the slave seeking revenge for harsh punishment hid one night in the niche halfway up the spiral staircase and waited when young started up the stairs these the angry slaves sprang from his hiding place and stabbed his master to death legend says that he died on the 13th step it is effect that the step rotted away and until the staircase was repaired around 1957 a dark red stain was said to be this man's blood even today visitors are told to carefully avoid stepping on this haunted spot very cool story now let's take a look inside the house I had stories saying that there was a camp that stay the night out there when I thought oh boy forgot something came back in and really Wow oh yeah oh yeah they gonna bother me too much really really Wow so so he was so he was murdered obviously yeah on that step right there Wow right here 21 years I've never seen yeah yeah it's Luca I don't see any oh man you were kidding about the Watts there yeah this was like Pantheon his kids room and humanists silent yeah I saw the sign but you hadn't signed for it really well so that's interesting the yeah it sure would yeah [Music] yeah yeah I've seen a lot of what I'm told like old buildings old churches I've been to that have been sitting for a long time there's there's one in particular has a honey bee nest under the side of the house though the wood planks [Music] [Music] yeah this one has little windows to that's pretty interesting you know the little windows to get to the balconies [Music] yeah yeah so well I tell you when I drove by I've never seen anything that look like this you know around here [Music] - able to judge room really yeah so I noticed that when we were in there that there was no staircase and I was gonna ask you about that yeah you see it used to be a walkway across huh that's interesting I wonder what the the thought was you know architectural II know why they wouldn't have a stair like you'd have to come through this way yeah some people say this I mean like whenever he had races and stuff I hear they said that he used that side for the gas and stuff - Leo over there and because down by the pool you see like somebody said there used to be a rock and there's you can still see a rock Foundation they said that's where the slave headquarters were gotcha yeah it's very cool [Music] all right now we're gonna take a look at the old springfed swimming pool which is unfortunately no longer in operation apparently the rock quarry that was just over that way mined down below the water base and affected the water coming up here to feed the swimming pool the swimming pool of course is a later addition I believe the pamphlet said it's from the 1950s although I'd have to go back and watch the watch the video our treatment to know for sure [Music] alright folks I hope you enjoyed seeing this house just as much as I did it's a very cool place very unique architecture not a usual design for out in this area at least by the way this house was built by Horace King renowned bridge builder in this area which is very cool fact to look him up really cool I'm gonna do some videos on him later on - I've been planning on this is an amazing house and like I said earlier just goes to show you don't know what's in your backyard and go out looking so this is an open like Alabama and is a park and a campground so if you're ever in the area make sure you stop by and check it out but the video is not over yet right now we're about to walk across the road and check out mr. Young's gravesite alright so the house is right over there I don't know if he can see it through the trees on the GoPro I mean walking up this little trail and I think we've come up to the gravesite which is really interesting how it's on this hill right here so we have the young tombstone with his son Joseph who died when he was 20 in 1880 he was born 1860 and there's William Penn C Young born in 1823 died 1878 now wait a minute I thought he was killed by one of his slaves and slavery ended in 1865 well that was a part of the pamphlet that I didn't read to you it's not known whether that's fact or fiction whether he was killed on the 13th stair of his house obviously something's wrong here either his death date wasn't 1878 or the stories not true but it is interesting that the pamphlet said that the wood of the 13th step on the stair case did rot out and before it was replaced it had a blood stain on it so it seems like somebody was killed there but it wasn't mr. young and it doesn't seem to be known who it was but it's a really cool story really cool place make sure you come and visit we'll see you next time
