what is going on everybody i'm standing outside my apartment actually with shane and nick and they built this freaking masterpiece we're gonna get into the entire information on this thing it's for sale this thing is for sale is this the first van for your company this is the first van that land ship has made as landscape as landship but you both uh between the two of you between the two of them they've done other projects the reason i'm not turning this way guys because i got that sun behind me but anyways they've done other projects together it's individually you're good you're good it's all good it's all good you've got a phenomenal woodworker and then a man that knows everything about van life because he's lived in one and built four before this this is the fourth yeah all right so we're going to get a lot of information in this video and see this amazing van behind you start of landship start of lynch here we go [Music] how are you i'm good so i got nick on my left shane on my right before we step inside it sounds like you guys uh built this phenomenal piece of machinery behind you how long did it take it took us five minutes you guys are now starting a business together of building vans in socal i believe yes san diego landship customs by the way i said how many times this reminds me of a boat inside your van and you both were like uh duh our company's called lance anything else you want to tell me about landship i know that you have a massive background nick and woodworking and shane you've got a background in just life we met when we were little kids i like swim team we're seven years old and then best friends ever since and then i went off did a bunch of stuff ended up living in vans while i was going back to school studying renewable energy it was kind of like everything i was learning in classes i was actually applying building electrical systems in the van so i was living in and then so i really hope you have a good electrical system in here because then if you don't we're kind of screwed i mean it works it lifts the things up and down so i'm pretty stoked he's actually referring to that box up there that we're eventually going to get to and then nick how long have you been woodworking for uh i've been woodworking my whole life yeah you kind of have to say that as a woodworker yeah yeah my parents have tables from when i was like 10 in their house wow good for you man as a profession i've been doing it for five years now and then i was doing it as a side job before that well do you have mind if we step in let's go uh i'm gonna start from the front moving backwards so i'm gonna step in first that's cool yeah do your thing what the heck is above your head yeah so this is a prominent feature this is a hideaway shower it ties into what you were talking about one of the things that came into this whole design process when we started building this is like we didn't want a van where you felt cramped where you felt like you weren't comfortable in it and so we wanted to make it so it had a comfortable living area wanting to include an amenity like a shower in a non-extended van it had to be a hideaway what what is that it's a copper rod but what is it so we have this copper rod that um we custom bent it goes all the way around um in a continuous bend we have this uh curtain so right off the bat we're just going right into a shower by the way like we're just going for it yeah we have this uh curtain tucked away in a shower pan down here it ties up against wall just pull the these uh pop around all the way i think we get the picture now yeah so you can pull it all the way around it has magnet snaps up the vertical length and around the base that snap in so it snaps in and you can uh take a little rainfall shower i saw yeah i saw the rain the rain shower right there um not only that it doubles as a privacy curtain it does and uh it gives you privacy when you're using the composting toilet oh okay uh we're gonna get into that in one second i want to finish up with a shower uh you have a rain shower and then when i stepped in there was no pan or anything so where the heck does that water go yeah so what we have here is a i gradiated the subfloor you what gradient so i basically shaved it down into a slope so yeah we're gonna have to speak in layman's terms for myself as well as some of the viewers here on that right my fault um yeah so i sloped the floor down um fiberglassed at all so it's all waterproof and then laid this teak over it coming from the boat building world teak is a wood you want to use if it's going to get wet i don't know if we mentioned i know you had a lot of woodworking background but you also just mentioned you built a lot of boats yeah so i came uh my last job before this i was building uh wooden boats out in maine wooden boats in maine yes uh so you've got this floor that's teak that's the pan as well and that it drains uh directly to the ground or to the gray drains into here and uh shane can pick up without explanation to make our lives even more exciting complicated we wanted to build a recirculating shower system you know from living in vans for years my girlfriend wanted to uh be able to have the people that buy this van not have to take military showers every time okay well that was nice of you pretty much drains from here into a recirculating tank and then depending on which switch you pull this switch opens and closes some valves and makes it so that the water starts getting pumped from that recirculating tank through a hot water heater it's a four gallon bosch hot water heater um it's got a 1400 watt heating element in there and pretty much by the time the little half gallon of water gets up back to you in the recirculation it's nice and hot and so you're just using the same several gallons of water um and you say several like it's a i would say it's about four then it's four and a half i went through as many research tank designs as i could okay and how hard is this by the way research if you're trying to do your first van don't do a research like straight out thank you for saying this shane because honestly it's it's one of my biggest questions of let's do a research and i'm like listen the concept of it is simple yeah the open loop system is out there putting it into a van is not simple it took me probably three tries after testing it a lot to get it to a point where i felt comfortable like selling it to somebody if you're okay with sharing this information how many filters do you have i have seven and then a uv light wow and that's probably right on par with what you should have for sure and so i i have two filters before it even gets to the research tank no way right at the drain you have a filter that's easy to pop in and out and they're disposable they're cheap and you can buy them really fat really easily and then i have a second filter under here before it gets to the check valve which keeps the water from flowing back flowing out over here and then it goes into the re-circ tank gets pumped up and then there's two spin filters and then the pump okay and then it goes through the three you know reverse osmosis filters and then the uv light so yeah you check me on gradient not reverse osmosis i mean come on well i mean i would hope that most of my viewers went to biology class right we all didn't go to woodworking class okay fair enough we all should know what osmosis means but yeah i mean the truth good one good one but the truth is is that having one of these things if you're gonna shower all the time it's more maintenance you gotta change out your filters you gotta use special types of soaps like dr broner's hippie soaps because the other ones clog them up because of that you know we also have a normal dump system if you don't want to use the research tank you just flip this switch and then i just heard the valve open yeah oh yeah it's just that's i get so stoked every time that one makes it so that it just drains straight through the research tank into the great water tank i love it as a normal shower you can use it as a research shower i have heat tape on everything under the van and heating pads on all the tanks fresh tank is how big 32 gallons and then your gray is doesn't really matter because it's a gray but 25. and then your research tank i guess is four and a half but mostly because of the the hot water heater is for and then the recirc tank is only a half right and it's really just there to prime the pump for when he turned into a recirculating system got you spent a long time in the shower that's okay it was much needed because this is one of your pride and joys of your van yeah uh i am gonna move over to this kitchen galley setup again phenomenal woodworking nick you got a nice sponge in there thanks pal uh i do love the fact that you went with the copper throughout or the gold accents throughout yeah tell me about it what's going on we've got this big deep copper sink which you know you said it copper vibes is kind of the theme of the van there's a nice little you know copper scent or copper faucet we've got the 1800 watt induction cooktop right here and then we have this that folds up so you can have an extra nice little space um it's pretty pretty big kitchen what is yeah now that it is now with that right there and you're looking at about six six and a half feet what type of countertop is that so this is a walnut butcher block uh walnut butcher block oh yeah that's not cheap at all what the hell are you doing with walnut butcher vlog hey man we wanted to we wanted to make a sexy van i mean it is sexy i mean i love walnut don't get me wrong so it's very sexy can i ask what was the intention of this area right here being bare if you're sitting right here while you're driving we we wanted the option for somebody to be able to put seat belts in here we didn't do it okay ourselves if somebody did put seat belts in here and they got into a crash they wouldn't smash against this right here oh so that was your intention that was the intention right also good storage and it's just nice to have more space like the we also the table we have a lagoon mount table which we can set up whenever but yeah it swivels around it makes a nice table space right here space right here having open space and have being able to actually have friends over into your van and stuff is so nice i mean especially yeah having the open fl floor plan with the bench seating and then even having the swivel seats up here like you can fit you know a good number of people comfortably this is the this is the party landship yeah uh i am going to talk a little bit more on wood if that's okay absolutely of course it is always okay with you you put this ripple effect if people haven't noticed yet i guess i don't know if i'm saying that right but i call it a ripple effect yeah hey it is whatever you call it uh yeah fluting ripple effect yeah there you go would be the technical it is the technical term right there i'm assuming that was because of your boat background i i haven't seen too many boats with this on it i put it on there because uh i don't know touch is such an important sense to me i mean aesthetically it it creates interest it creates excitement it creates shadows there's a certain like dynamism that comes with um wow thank you good work that comes with like you know having the the texture on the wall but then also just like having that you know extra like little you know surprise like kind of joy like you put your hand on the wall it's like exciting you know so what type of word wood did you use with the fluting so for the fluting we used white oak with a white oil finish nice um to to really make it kind of stand out against the uh warmer tones in in like the walnut and the cedar and you grain matched yes yes so on these cabinets um it was all cut out of continuous strips yep and uh to create yeah the continuity through it and then just quickly above you what uh what did you use for your ceiling yeah so the ceiling is western red cedar very common in the boating world so that came uh certainly from there that same wood also is echoed in the alcoves and on the outside of the van that's awesome lovely touch with the portholes i freaking love those they're like it's just different i love something that's different right and it seems like a lot of this van has a lot of check boxes when it comes to differences that was what we were hoping for yeah this is like it's eye-catching it's different you also did something really fascinating with the floor um yeah it looks like it looks like there's two different floors here so yeah absolutely um so yeah in the shower section we used uh teak right which again comes from the boating world uh because the oils in it and everything that's the wood you want to use in an area that's going to get wet but then uh transitioning we wanted to kind of like create some transition into the living area it transitions into the walnut um kind of uh so you choose the same from the countertop yeah so we uh basically used the butcher block the extras we milled up and put on the floor so this whole time we're like you guys are sitting comfortably you got a table that would eventually go there where the heck do you sleep yeah so i'll let i'll let ho ho do the honors oh yeah so nick's last name is over sin so you call him oh i call him he's the ho ho okay it's a nickname that came out of somewhere and it's stuck i mean you guys loves he loves eating hobos okay he's kind of a big intimidating guy when you first meet him and so if you introduce him as ho ho people's yards go down you know yeah like oh it can't be dad he's a big hug yeah so this looks like it comes out at some point yeah we uh we went with a three a three-piece sliding system uh with three piece because with the two-piece it's just you know it's an extra it's taking up an extra foot of space sure if you want a six-foot bed um which this one counting the the space by the doors is six foot five at length it's either three feet and three feet or you know three two foot sections and so we went with that three piece sliding system and it just uh slides out pops into these little pin holes here oh it's felt lined on the bottom or slides nice and smooth so you actually sleep north south front to back correct you do not sleep side to side no yeah so this this bed is um six foot five by uh sixty so it fits all though it's a whole proof bed uh basically a queen size bed and then uh it looks bigger it looks like a big queen it's a it's a comfortable queen it's in between yeah it's bigger than a queen california is the california queen can we call that yeah yeah california queen uh and then underneath you were about to say something yeah underneath we have this second bed what pulls out so you could sleep a lot of people up in here for sure three and a half we say three and a half three four if you're trying to cuddle i mean you could have a major cuddle putty cuddle pod cuddle puddle party cuddle puddle parties are what we're all about here okay definitely two people as long as you get along well yeah top not even able to throw three people into three people you'll see on the roof deck we can throw a tent on the roof deck too so you can get people there we haven't even gotten to the roof deck yet holy crap this is six foot by uh i believe it's 40. and so that's between a twin and a full yep so you have a queen a large queen and a twin slash full down wow for sure and yeah and it's nice because these pillows just fit really snug against this fridge and so when you sleep on this thing you throw you know throw some blankets down you don't fall into the cracks at all how hard is it to put this thing back up and together pretty easy pretty easy so usually using i'm assuming you use those as backrests these are backgrounds so then this just slides right in perfect so that's one this one you just gotta kind of move the pillows ahead of time and technically you can use that upper section as a sleeping section for sure yeah that just pops in no hinge is needed or uh or slides i should say yeah it just pops right down and there's your backrest your background we're all set up again bada bing bada boom i love it guys yeah before we go outside um obviously everybody there is a fridge here so relax okay people do ask about um we're gonna talk about electrical real quick and then heating element how do you stay warm yep and then as we walk outside i want you to show me this toilet yeah real deal yeah my favorite subject is pooping in buckets absolutely so uh what is your electrical system because you are you are the marine electrician over here yeah so electrical system we have 750 watts of solar on the roof and it's on a mechanically tilting rack which we're going to get to and we're going to get to so you can angle it to maximize your production 24 volt 300 amp hour battery system it's the equivalent to a 600 amp hour 12 volt system um then we have a 4 000 watt inverter pure sine wave allows you to put everything on at the same time so you don't have to worry about that are you going to be running 24 volts and your vans in the future because it's just an it's a better system to run i if you know how to wire like how many amps you have to put through wires and 12-volt systems sure you run big big currents and it just kind of scares me yeah just like 24 volts more oh yeah we have an air conditioner in here too we got the oh yeah no big deal we just have we have now we just made this a four season van it's a four season bam what what a suit it's the zero breeze mark mark one smaller so it's a small ac system it's we ducted it through the column right there and it opens out that little vent what it does is it blows nice cool air on you while you're sleeping yeah and that top bed keeps you nice and comfy at night yeah i know zero breathes well sure it's it's like it can cool down the space of a queen-size bed for sure it's like i wouldn't if you're out here in 120 degree weather you're not gonna cool down the van with just that but we insulated with an insane amount of loose wool yeah we actually blew into every single cavity of the van throwing that thing on in 90 degrees san diego nighttime it is super nice having that cold air blowing up uh what do you go for heater heater we did the wabasto scc yup 2000. a lot of people use it and it's obvious for obvious reasons it definitely works your favorite topic my man all right let's talk pooping let's let's poop away so lived in vance for i don't know three three and a half years full time with another woman at the same time and so pooping is you know a big big topic when you live full time with your girlfriend okay so this is you know after three and a half years of r d we got the uh land ship the lssb the landship bleat bucket and um so it's composting toilet we didn't go with airhead or the nature's head because after living with these things for a long time the worst part about them is having to dump the pee yep so all the good ones you separate the liquids from the solids you fill up the back container with a bunch of nice sawdust or some nice carbon rich material and the solids are no big deal because you just cover them with fluffy sawdust they don't really smell they start turning in dirt we have it ventilated out through the floor of the van so you know there's no smell problem with that the p no matter how nice of a compost toilet you get dealing with the p ruins wherever you are right so to fix that problem um we built this system where the p actually goes through this latch that has a magnetic um closer so no odors can come through it and then it goes through the floor into the gray water check valve for pee it's a check valve pretty much goes through the floor into the gray water tank mixes with the soapy water from the from the you know sink in the shower and then this this is like a nice little place where you can store the sawdust scoop it out from here and hold it back we got a little toilet yup and then our favorite part is that no one really wants to stare deeply into the eyes of their loved ones while pooping we made this curtain actually able to close off the toilet so you can make a nice little toilet room while you poop all right let's move into some really interesting stuff that's on the outside yep here you can check out the the this button apparently before we go outside he's going to show us buttons we got this c marine system that's monitoring all the electrical monitoring all the amps of the battery what we're using how much the solar is charging all that stuff down here you turn this button is actually a magnetic lock okay that holds the solar rack closed while you're driving yep demagnetizes it and then this turns that off which then supplies power to the actuators got sure because you don't want them working against each other okay and then this button is what controls the actuators that lift the solar panels on the roof and give you access to the roof deck so and we also have a inclinometer that actually has mounted to the solar panels that tells you the exact angle that the solar panels are at so if i press this button right here i'm just going to put it all the way to 90. and you can see that angle starting to go up i can't even hear it going it's super quiet and so we can walk up there as it's going yeah and you can see oh there it is that starts to go up and it's a nice smooth well i just fell where'd you go those actuators those are progressive automation actuators oh thank you thank you we have a fan yeah it's pretty fun because you can you can on that sea marine system you can look up what's the best solar angle on your phone and then click the button and get it to the exact angle and then you can watch on the scene it's still going yeah it'll go up to 90. it'll go up to 90. will it go full 90. yeah you can see it from this side pretty good um but pretty much you can see the amps increasing drastically on that c marine screen as it goes up as you change the angle when the sun's like lower in the sky uh and that's pretty fun okay well what the heck we're on the outside of the van now and it's just first of all i'm staring at a 90 degree open box on top of a van with solar panels on it we call it the solar sail the solar sail that's pretty cool and then your woodworking nick is on the outside as well yeah obviously this is not an inconspicuous stealth vehicle this is not a stealth van but who cares at this point no that is for your i'm assuming big-ass surfboards yeah so we like short boarding and we like long boarding okay on boards are big and so nine footers we built this thing so you could fit a nine foot six long board nice on top with the fin completely up and so when we hop up here we have the longboard all right i'm gonna hop up is that cool absolutely can i just climb yeah climb on up there oh there's a deck so i can actually get up onto the deck it's a party day that's what we're supposed to do right now so where all three of us are gonna get up here on this deck if anybody's wondering that's actually nick's uh ride over there uh that you've built out as well yeah a party deck a metric f load of storage and uh also tilting solar so you know being able to hang out your deck is on the roof is rad throw a nine foot six long board a short board you can see right here we just you can get like kind of waterproof um storage bins you could fit a ton of those up here so the deck itself is not waterproof or the the the enclosure is not 100 waterproof it holds off pretty good but there's going to be water there oh obviously but that's not your intent right surfboards can be outside it's okay and and like you can buy waterproof bags of course of course or bins like you said exactly so this is the way right here this is pretty cool i mean when we went to the the flagstaff expo the other weekend we you know got a camp spot climbed up here stargazed for a couple hours you can fit a 10 up here too which we had a friend that was almost going to stay up here and then he gave up real quick but i mean honestly a sleeping bag with a pad and you could you could call it a night you know and we were thinking about even if you tilted this thing down like 40 40 degrees yeah and we have some we have some rib nuts right here you can put some hooks in you just have like a little camera machine canvas sheet that made it right up here boom you could do it that way well guys anything else you want to kind of share with me before we kind of end this and we're going to end it up here if that's okay because look at that freaking sunset behind us i mean las vegas is beautiful i mean right look at that that is amazing right there sorry i cut you off because i was worth it so that sunset is way better than the thing i'm about to talk about last thing is signal booster yeah so living in a van working remote all last summer i had a job that all on the computer and so having the signal booster where you can go from you know two bars to five and go full full conference call and so many more badass places it's pretty game changer absolutely and the thing that really makes the single booster work well is having a pretty tall antenna and it's accessible from the rear door so you don't have to come out you don't have to come out i just didn't want to step over the edge like that a solid four and a half feet off the top of the van so like yeah again we're not being inconspicuous here we've already kind of eighty six that you've given up on stealth if you want it stealth van go buy brandon's fans his vans are way more stuff he's actually referring to buck sd everybody um that's obviously we're all friends guys i can't thank you guys enough obviously showing me the landship customs flagship this is the flag flag land ship it's the flag laying ship i like that i mean this is your this is your first baby let's send it let's let's set it sail and let's build you guys another one the puns are playing so we're selling this one and we're taking on clients to do custom builds right now so okay you guys like be careful what you wish for you know because you're about to get bombarded obviously you're gonna check you guys out at landship customs.com i presume yeah uh what is the best way to get a hold of you just through your website yeah hit us up on our website we have all of our contact info there awesome great guys thanks again to shane and nick for showing us the land cut landship customs first van together awesome thank you very much all right buddy later guys [Music] you
