oh [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] so so hello and a very warm welcome from may lieutenant colonel nick grace i'm speaking to you from the royal marines museum in portsmouth and it's indeed a fitting place to be introducing the 2014 beating retreat ceremony by the mass bands of her majesty's royal marines which is steeped in both tradition and history as part of our 350th anniversary celebrations we are delighted to be welcoming the marine band from the royal netherlands navy and the united states marines second division band to perform with us for the very first time with dignitaries and senior personnel from several countries present it promises to be a spectacular event and we are absolutely delighted to welcome her majesty the queen and prince philippe the duke of edinburgh who as the captain general of the royal marines since 1953 will be taking the salute our commentary today is given by a great friend of the corps charles collingwood and i would like to hand over to charles who will now guide you through the first part of the ceremony which is not normally seen by the general public thank you colonel nick and welcome to wellington barracks where the masked bands are getting ready for their performance while the guard of honor from m company 4-2 commando royal marines prepare to receive their regimental color having been moved from their permanent base in plymouth the regimental color has been temporarily accommodated in the office's mess of wellington barracks the colour party consists of the officer for the color and two escorts the officer is usually a junior officer who will carry the color and the two escorts are senior color sergeants they will march either side of the officer who is carrying the color as protection the colour party are now outside the officer's mess ready to receive the colour the colour is brought out of the mess by the drum major of the band who will hand it over to the officer of the colour party this carefully choreographed routine is done each time the colour is taken out for ceremonial occasions at the end of the parade this whole evolution is performed in reverse to return the colour to the officer's mess for safe keeping the queens and the regimental colors are held by royal marines units the queen's color is the symbol of the sovereign and the country whereas the regimental color is the emblem of the soul of the regiment for today's event it will be the regimental color of four two commando royal marines that will be carried on the parade throughout history unit colors were very important especially during the heat of the battle troops would need to know who they should follow and where they should be nowadays this whole ceremony is one of symbolic trust and reverence protected by a guard of 96 ranks the color along with the guard and the mast bands are now ready to make their way from wellington barracks along bird cage walk towards horse guards parade where the final preparations are being made for their arrival displays of this magnitude can only achieve success through careful preparation and i would like to thank our colleagues from both america and the netherlands for working so hard to achieve this as members of the corps prepare to welcome the colour and the mass bands to horse guards parade i will say goodbye and hand you back to charles for the rest of this unique event as ten royal marines march out onto the parade their job is to mark out the area within which the mast bands will be performing the ceremony of beating retreat the actual origin of this ceremony is a little obscure but there's no doubt that it was one of the earliest to be instituted into the armed forces one of the first references made to such a ceremony which was then called watch setting is in the rules of ordinances for the war dated 1554 it appears that the original call was beaten by drums alone and that it was some years before fives were introduced the bugle came at a later date still and the present ceremony of having a band paraded is an innovation introduced during the 20th century which is purely as a spectacle retreat was the name given to the beating of drums carried out under the leadership of the drum major or later the bugle major which took place at the end of the day it was the sound that ordered troops to cease fire and to retire to their camp as well as warning the centuries to stand guard until next morning when ravalli was sounded the various drum beatings known as retreat beatings together with the sounding of sunset are at the core of the major ceremony now known as beating retreat thirty members of the corps of drums now march out from horse guards onto the
