We were playing this album in the Data Center waiting for Y2K to do absolutely nothing.
The song is now playing in my head.
Sabotage was the first video I saw. Shit was insanely awesome to 14 year old me.
I got to spend an awesome Halloween in Shibuya once with some friends. We dressed up as the Beastie Boys from this video and even though I loved every minute, we quickly realised that to most Japanese people we weren't the Beastie Boys. We were just three foreigners dressed up like Tokyo utility workers / safety guides.
In fact, as we got off the train in Shibuya, two workers stopped us and called us over confused. They seemed a bit insulted too that we dressed up like them. As we walked away they called us back and gave us each some candy. Tokyo is the best.
What's funky for me is watching this video when I was a kid and loving it but now having to commute through that god forsaken hellhole that is Shinjuku Station on a daily basis.
More than 21 years ago. Summer of 1998, remember it well.
Like a pinch on the neck from Mr Spock
I remember a friend in high school saying 'you like the Beastie Boys - right? Well I just got thier new album and it sucks, here ya go. Its yours."
The album was Paul's Boutique for chrissakes.
It's funny. After vanilla ice, when Eminem first launched there were a lot of people ridiculing another white rapper, but one of the best rap/hip hop groups of all time were three white boys.
I can vividly remember seeing this music video for the first time. Like up to that point I just followed my brother blindly into the rock/metal scene he liked. Hearing this though like like this sudden jolt to the brain and I HAD to explore not just the Beastie Boys but this whole 'hip-hop' business. I honestly can say that this four and a half minute music video changed my life.
