Hey Drach, any chance of doing a podcast series? I like to listen to your history videos when I'm driving or working, and it's easier to do that in an audio only format.

[Music] [Music] welcome to this Wednesday's video in the first this is sponsored by the great courses plus more on them later in the words of another famous youtuber well ladies and gentlemen you've been waiting for it quite a few have you have been asking for it and today we return to the second Pacific squadron which is of course a Russian fleet and being from Russia the phrase and then it got worse is practically a national motto so let's pick up where we left off before sir admiral rozhestvensky and the second pacific squadron had faced and dealt with numerous threats over the past few months imaginary bet japanese torpedo boats real english fishing boats the kamchatka almost starting a war with a global superpower accidentally shooting up their own ships of the kamchatka disease mountainous seas the Kamchatka poisonous snakes profits of the end times the Kamchatka highborn officers running rat hunts through the fleet and being saddled with a bunch of obsolete floating targets that only served to slow them down and of course the Kamchatka despite the ramshackle and battered nature of his fleet it must have been almost to relief to the poor Admiral when although he was simply trying to reach Russian Pacific ports the Imperial Japanese Navy actually eventually showed up on the horizon at least here were some genuine Japanese warships with actual real-life torpedo boats which meant that finally there was something they were actually supposed to be shooting at that said the Russian fleet was at something of a disadvantage going into the fray and not just because of the long journey although theoretically outnumbering Admiral Togo's formation 2 to 1 in modern ish battleships the rest of the Russian formation the destroyers protected cruisers and armored cruisers was incredibly badly outnumbered especially in the realm of armored cruisers which at the time was seen as secondary units in the line of battle and in which classification the Japanese held an 8 to 3 advantage if you discount the somewhat bizarre Matsushima class the Russians speed was also quite limited whilst the Imperial Japanese battle line was restricted to only 15 knots by having brought along some of their older ships including for some obscure reason the particularly geriatric ex Chinese turret ironclad Shen yuan which had been renamed to the Qin n the Japanese could however maintain this speed whereas the Russian fleet if it wanted to stick together could top our earth about fourteen knots but only for very short periods with their machinery in a very poor state of repair and the ships holes horribly fouled with accreted marine life that was kind of par for the course for an 18,000 mile voyage without a visit to an actual major dock and of course the dreaded Japanese torpedo boats were actually here for a change that is of course to say nothing of the state or training of the crews guns fire control equipment or ammunition on board which will pick up later in this account woe to his credit wrote as Fenske had pretty much spent the entire voyage apart from trying to keep the fleet in one piece trying to educate his Gunners in you know shooting straight especially after the whole dogger Bank incident but with such a long and public voyage the Japanese could not have failed to know the Russians were coming and so they had a variety of vessels out on scouting duty and both in common shipping lanes and outside of them records are somewhat unhelpfully into completely different formats as the russians and japanese at the time used to completely separate dating systems the Julian and Gregorian calendars but since we've been following the story of the second Pacific squadron we're going to use their slightly obsolete dating system feel free to look up the dating system under the more commonly used modern a calendar if you wish you just have to basically adjust forward by about a couple of weeks additionally every account of the battle differs by in some cases up to 30 minutes on the exact timing of certain events such as when a ship opened fire or when it sank and so the times that will be presented are by necessity most something of an approximation averaging out across very sources again favoring Russian battle logs where there's a major conflict for some reason as laughter we are reducing Russian dates for this video and we're following the story of the second Pacific squadron on the night before the fateful encounter the Russian fleet was approaching Japanese controlled waters just after midnight a Japanese auxilary Cruiser spotted lights on the horizon which turned out to belong to one of the Russian ships the hospital vessel orell which in accordance with the rules of war was still showing lights to prevent it being attacked by mistake in the dark the Japanese vessel the Shinano Maru closed in and correctly identified the arel as a Russian unarmed auxilary RL on the other hand torch in an amaru was just another Russian vessel that was undergoing samman navigational problems and so didn't bother to actually tell anyone that it was there but instead helpfully pointed out by signal light should be careful because there are other Russian ships nearby in the darkness and you might run into them thus unwittingly assisted and very grateful the shenana Maru broke contact and radioed the location of the Russian forces back to Apple Togo who immediately ordered his fleet to set sail for battle as he left toga toga sent a signal to Tokyo advising them of his intention to attack the Russian forces and very helpfully and politely including a weather report at the end of his report over where the Russians were sailing the weather was particularly poor with a sea mist fog and rain schools as well as a significant number of high waves well the second Pacific squadron had attracted quite the following with a large number of Japanese vessels forming a loose cordon around the enemy fleet meaning that although Togo couldn't see anything much past about five miles he was perfectly aware of where his opposite number was even though his opposite number was about 40 miles or so away in the fog dawn broke with the Russian fleet arrayed in two columns ahead the Svetlana or al and Alma's scouted and behind them the right-hand column was led by Raja raha Sowinski aboard of the Suvorov with the most modern battleships the Alexander the third Borodino or L which helpfully shared a name with the hospital ship we mentioned earlier the Ostia buyer as well as three older ships Sicily Navarre n'd and Nakhimov the full names of all of these will be pronounced properly in a separate video please forgive me for that the left-hand column who was commanded by Admiral near bogotรก with four older battleships Nicholas the first aprox in SEN Yavin and ochakov along with the cruisers oleg arora Donskoy and vladimir monomakh each column was allocated a single Cruiser and two torpedo boats to guard its flanks with all the transports and the remaining torpedo boats in between the two columns with the hospital ship stationed to the rear and so before we get into the main battle itself let's take a brief moment to talk about the channels first sponsors the great courses plus is a subscription-based on-demand video learning service with a number of lectures and courses available from various highly qualified professors from various Ivy League universities and various around academic institutions such as the Smithsonian and if you're interested in cookery the Culinary Institute of America they have quite the library of videos on almost any subject you could be interested in of course the vector u here means you're probably interested in naval history and they definitely have a on that in particular are quite like the decisive battles of world history series they even have a lecture number 31 shown for you on screen now which is on exactly the same sub subject that you listening to now and I'm pleased to see they've included a number of other famous naval battles in that series so if you fancy watching that video or any of the others they have a naval history or I guess if you're interested in other subjects they've got stuff on that too there is apparently a free trial code which should be appearing on the screen now and also in the description below which is of course the great courses plus comm slash Drake in FL apparently and so back to 1905 bearing in mind that we are of course using the Russian dating system of the period the Battle of Tsushima is about to start 40 miles from Tsushima Island the Russian fleet spots the Japanese Cruiser Azumi in return the Azumi spots the cruiser szymczak on the right flank of the Russian formation with the main Japanese fleet still very much in the distance the Russians hoist flags to commemorate the Tsar's coronation day even as they begin to receive signals from the ships at the rear of their formation that even more Japanese vessels are coming into view rozhestvensky orders the russian fleet to assume battle formation and the transports drop back the battleships and armored cruisers merge into a single long line of battle with roses Fenske of course taking the lead aboard his flagship at the Suvorov much as togo is doing aboard Mikasa a few dozen miles away forbore Japanese cruisers appear to the west and another steamer crosses the front of the Russian formation fearing a torpedo attack the sim should fire several shots and the steamer withdraws process vents key orders that there be no pursuit admiral togo sends his men to lunch and surveys his fleet the consequences of interference from st. petersburg on the russians chances are quite telling without having to wait for the questionable ships of the third pacific squadron and without his subsequent rate of advance being further hampered by them precise Minsky would have been in this area months earlier when a number of Japanese ships would still have been in the shipyards repairing damage from encounters of the first pacific squadron instead practically every combat capable ship in the japanese fleet is here and togo has spent the intervening time drilling his men over and over and over in gunnery which to be fair as far as he can sew his roses frensky orell fires a single shot that's the battleship not the hospital ship rapidly signaling apologies to the flagship saying that it was an accidental discharge but in a scene reminiscent of the very earliest days of the voyage other ships unsure of what's going on begin to open fire as well on general principle the older ships under Neuberger Tov are especially enthusiastic in their displays of gunnery not to be left out the recently arrived Japanese cruisers for a few shots in the general direction of the older Russian ships and slip away back into the fog Ross s Penske curtly signals his fleet not to waste ammunition presumably hurling another set of binoculars into the sea with the scouting elements of the Japanese fleet still the only ones visible recessed vents key orders a course change to Vladivostok which is his intended final destination hoping against all hope that he's caught Togo flat-footed and the fleets won't have to engage no sooner has the fleet settled onto this course then a small group of Japanese cruisers an actual real-life all-singing all-dancing all features included protected by the emperor torpedo boats and begin to move to cross the T of the Russian fleet worried about a torpedo attack on his lead battleships and determined to sweep this small formation aside our assessments key orders his main ships into a line abreast a far more potent display of force that allows every forward pointing gun on his capital ships to bear at the same time falling out of line ahead into line abreast does require a bit of skill and some clever handling but three of the four leading battleships execute it perfectly unfortunately Alexander the third gets it wrong and turns the wrong way soon enough the rest of the line is piling up in confusion as Rosso spent ski tries to decide whether burying his head in his hands slamming it repeatedly into the nearest bulkhead all screaming incoherently was through hurling binoculars at every ship in sight is more becoming for a man of his position wearily he cancels the order and orders the ship back into line ahead formation instead this first gave him two columns once again this time with the four leading ships including himself on the right and everybody else in their own line to port what he really needed was some more time to re-establish the single line ahead formation as the small Japanese squadron that had prompted all this had quietly slipped away in the confusion but he wasn't going to be granted that time at molto go meets up with Admiral dear was squadron which has been keeping watch ahead of the Russian formation shortly thereafter the Japanese fleet turns south-southwest and makes direct contact with the Russian fleet a British observer aboard one of the Japanese ships noted this as a moment calling for prompt and dedicated action understatement of the century really there on the Russian side of things the command elements of the fleet headed for their ships of various conning towers as the Imperial Japanese Navy began to cross the Russian T both star sides stared intently at each other waiting for just the right moment since togo had an actually good signals officer he had pre-arranged most of his signals and so a simple flag said was hoisted soon after at the time the Imperial Japanese Navy was strongly influenced by the Royal Navy and the pre-written message that the flag signified has more than a touch of knell Sounion inspiration to it the Empire's fate depends on the results of this battle let every man do his utmost duty having closed the distance down to almost within main battery range the Japanese fleet now begins a u-turn to bring them back across the face of the Russians at this new decreased range but for a few minutes of the leading ships of their fleet will be practically stationary this is an excellent opportunity to start landing some hits at the orders of Ross's Pinsky Suvarov opens fire along with Alexander the third and Borodino behind them other ships are still trying to assemble into a line ahead and the lead ships are in the way nevertheless despite the privations and trials of their long voyage at least some of Ross's vents keys lessons have stuck the first shell hits the water scarcely 20 yards away from the Mikasa followed shortly thereafter by dozens more as the formations progress more and more Russian ships at their fire until within the space of five minutes Mikasa is hit 19 times without scoring a single hit in reply the sea around the Japanese flagship boils and steams from the sheer number near-misses Togo orders Mikasa to open fire at first the Japanese shots are wide very wide and implausibly it looks like the Russians are actually going to have the better of this gunnery duel but nerves steady and corrections are made every Japanese battleship now opens fire at the Suvorov whilst the armored cruisers in the battle line concentrate on the Oslo ya pyre as this ship is ostensibly flying the flag of the Russian second-in-command but unknown to most of the crew and certainly unknown to the Japanese he actually died several days ago the flag is present purely for morale purposes to make the Russian crew believe that the Admiral is still there only in his sickbed not helping matters is that in the confusion of the Russian ships maneuvering our silly abaya is forced to almost slow to a halt in order to avoid the oriole as dead ahead she's being engaged by no less than 6 armored cruisers at once the first Japanese shell hits the Russian flagship it's loaded with Chimel sir a Pike Creek acid explosive that burns significantly hotter and with significantly more power than the gunpowder and guncotton charges used in other fleets at a time the shell when it explodes also burst with a brilliant curtain of flame the Japanese have also done other things such as increase the bursting charge itself by a factor of three in terms of mass and the fact that many actually explode on impact makes little difference to overall damage as the powerful shock waves rip into the ship's superstructure and superheated flames caused the mixture of many layers of paint a few leftover wooden fittings and the coal dust grime and other accumulations from the long voyage left on the decks and super structures of many russian ships to ignite and soon flames are looking up many ships in the increasingly disorganized battle line this would be the first true test of pre dreadnaughts in combat and it was rapidly revealing a number of unexpected weaknesses thinner steel plates designed to protect from blasts and splinters on the upper parts of the hull and superstructure would torn apart by the violent Chimel say explosions and turned into whirling storms of shrapnel iron ladders attached to the outsides of various ships were torn and twisted cutting off access to other parts of the ship for their crews and many small guns mounted as anti boarding and anti torpedo boat defenses were along with their crews torn from the deck and thrown about through the air only in the casement batteries and turrets was a modicum of safety to be found and not even those areas would prove entirely safe at the far end of the Russian line Naboo guitars older ships are firing at anything that comes in range the Nikolas lands a lucky hit on the Asama knocking it out of action for almost 3/4 of an hour and then starts landing hits on the Nisshin and kasuga but the Japanese ships simply accelerate to 15 knots and open the range a speed the geriatric ships in the Bogota squadron simply cannot match instead he orders his ships to start zigzagging it has pretty much no effect on his own units relatively poor accuracy but makes life difficult for the Japanese who remain frustrated at their inability to heavily hit the now bobbing and weaving set of ancient targets Suvorov is now on fire a shell has hit the captains quarters and this time the sheets of flame don't burn out along with the layers of paint the heat from the various explosions in fact heats the air so much that the binoculars in the conning towers become useless in a haze of shimmering super hot air and smoke a number of splinters hit the conning tower and make it inside killing three men soon enough more and more splinters bits of super structure and gouts of water are slamming into the protected conning tower either ripping holes in it or going through the rents already made so much for a safe place to come and from then again outside is pretty much just fire smoke and dead bodies the captain begs OSes vents key to change course but he refuses whilst such a change would throw off Tigers firing solution it would also disrupt suvorov's own then a shell hits and tears a hole in the below the waterline finally our assessments key orders the ship to turn to starboard in theory putting the two fleets on roughly parallel courses more splinters enter the conning tower this time lightly wounding the Admiral he sits in a chair and observes the carnage six people are now dead inside the conning tower more are still wounded and nobody can even so much as see outside to work out how bad it is elsewhere on the ship an officer makes his way through the Maelstrom to report a serious fire in one of the turrets Russ's vents key laconically orders him to try and put it out as there isn't much he can do from inside the conning tower under constant bombardment from the Japanese battleships more hot shards of metal punch into the conning tower this time seriously wounding Rosses vents key in the head and legs whilst another takes out the ship's captain with a much more severe later to prove mortal wound to the head fire has spread aboard the Suvorov to the stern and the bridge the masts are gone the steering gear is damaged and the ship is stuck in its starboard turn rangefinders are smashed some of the artillery is dismounted and as a fighting unit the Russian flagship should be pretty much done but still the numerous intact weapons on board continue to spit shells defiantly at any Japanese passing ships that they happen to notice who in turn find themselves surprised that anyone is even alive let alone fighting in the drifting steel inferno the conning tower is no longer a tenable position only four men are left alive all wounded rasa's vents key two of his staff and one sailor and pushing bodies aside they head down an armored shaft to a lower fighting position upon reaching this part of the ship Ross as Minsky orders the officers to try and fix the steering and get the ship back into action before heading off to find some where from which he could actually see something dodging and weaving his way through passages and up ladders many of which are wreaths in below decks fires and despite the drunken and slow weaving of the Suvorov as it falls out of line when she did heal out of line the Alexander the third Borodino and orell had simply followed the leader but after a few minutes they realized what happened and Alexander the third swung back on course now leading the Russian formation and becoming Togo's target and number one the battle was shifting with the Japanese fleet gradually forcing the Russians around until the entire battle is heading southeast Suvarov has slowed to a stop and the Russian fleet passes by her still fighting the Japanese now it's Alexander the thirds turn to feel the fury of the Japanese battleship she'll fire already a flame in several places it grimly holds course and Toyo ships keep up the barrage knowing that decapitating the Russian line one ship at a time is still the most favorable path to victory for them elsewhere AUSA yep yaaaa the target of the Japanese cruisers is sinking listing rapidly to port until she rolls over in a welter of steam and spray hundreds of men slide or a hurled into the sea whilst Japanese shells continue to land around them a cruiser a tugboat and some of the torpedo boats rush in under fire to try and pluck some of the estimated 400 survivors from the icy waters Sicily velikiy is hit and begins flooding over the next hour she will be hit by a total of nine shells of three different calibers setting her on fire and severing the water supply to the firefighting equipment as the rear of the Russian line finally comes into action the two most efficient units in the Russian fleet the cruisers Oleg and Aurora finally managed to get into the fight and almost immediately get caught in a Japanese crossfire both ships return fire and begin evading torpedoes which have been spotted in the water somewhere in the middle of all of this the Kamchatka is slowly sailing in circles gradually slipping under by the stern finished off ironically enough and not by torpedo boats but by mundane Japanese gunfire from their cruisers now utterly ablaze Alexander the third heels out of line Borodino suicidally some might argue takes its place as the leader a search for us as Fenske aboard the Suvorov finally locates him having been hit by still more shell splinters in the starboard 6-inch gun turret apparently having been helping fire it until a hit reduced the rest of the gun crew to scatter debris he asks for new Gunners but is told the gun is completely wrecked the fog begins to thicken again and the gunfire between the two main battle lines dies off for a bit but further back amidst a scattering of disabled and burning Russian ships the fog is thinner and Japanese cruisers and destroyers continue a methodical execution of anything that's still afloat a four Japanese torpedo our boats launch an attack on the Suvarov despite burning steadily for several hours and now taking it or Pido to the stern the ship still lashes out as its attackers with a few remaining guns with no pressing need to continue the attack to closer range at the torpedo boats fall back noting the position for a night attack if Suvarov survives that long Sasori velikiy makes a surprise return to the fray having extinguished her fires albeit coming into the fight with a bad list to port the Japanese armored Cruiser Nisshin has been hit badly shells have sheared off several main guns and virtually disarmed the vessel in the middle of all this one ensign Essaouira KU Yamamoto loses two fingers to the remains of an explosion if he'd lost 1/3 he would have been been invalided out of military service thus and by the retention of a single digit would there be brother Larkin secuence 'as a few decades later on down the line we're the little elf to do harrasses vents key stayed in the shattered gun turret and eventually passed out now the Russian torpedo boat weenie homes interview captain kilometers 'iv barely recognizes the flagship the masts funnels and most of the superstructure are gone it looks more like a smoldering lump of floating charcoal than a ship a barely conscious conscious or a suspense key is transferred as the torpedo boat comes alongside another torpedo boat steams past Nabucco Tov's flagship and announces that Rosa's renske is wounded and has handed over command to him with orders to make further ladder Vostok although in a boggart of misses part the part about receiving command they were already heading to Vladivostok anyway drifting and like the Suvorov with a pronounced list and the Alexander the third suddenly rolls over and sinks in a matter of minutes having taken the worst of the Japanese fleets assault for the better part of nearly four hours off and on Borodino is now just a burning shell lifting badly although her forward guns are still firing back but twelve minutes later as the battleship Fuji breaks off she decides to clear her guns with one last parting salvo a shell hits the ship and within moments of fire spreads and one of the 6-inch magazines detonates further detonations rock the ship in sequence and she suddenly heels over although the upturned hull remains afloat for a short time before vanishing and the remaining Russian ships past the wreck although Orrell also badly damaged is slowing rapidly for torpedo boats closing again on the drifting Suvorov from seven torpedoes they score two possibly three hits and a huge pool of yellow and black smoke erupts possibly indicating a magazine explosion or at the very least a fire within ten minutes the Russian flag ship also capsizes still firing her remaining guns Admiral Togo orders his ships to cease fire and withdraw Russian torpedo boats are just as much a concern for him in the darkness as the Japanese equivalents are to the Russians but unlike them Togo can actually do something to protect his battleships from the Russians battered and still afloat and the bucket of squadron it turns Southwest to try and evade at the Japanese ships with the darkness now total Naboo Goethe's units try to head northeast again convert to one by one either through damage or lack of trust Russian ships begin to drop back or peel away from the formation over the night Japanese torpedo boats attack several times amongst other things scouring what will eventually be a mortal hit on the sea so velikiy and a similar hit on the cruiser Admiral Nakhimov as dawn breaks on the 15th only four other ships are following the Nicholas Anna Bhagat Hobbes flagship completely cut off from all help damaged and surrounded by attacking torpedo boats the Oleg and the Aurora head southwest out of the battle area navarran battered by shells and torpedoes throughout the day is limping along with a Japanese torpedo craft drops a string of mines chained together in front of her she hits the chain and drags at least two mines into contact she too quickly heels over and sinks somewhere in the darkness the coastal defence battleship Admiral Ushakov has gotten lost and will end up fighting a one ship lost and almost forgotten in the crash in melee of battle bright Sun and no fog are the order of the day as the dawn rises to the second day of the battle the cruiser assume brood is dispatched to investigate smoke plumes on the horizon the news isn't good there Japanese ships but then more detail arrives they're older vessels under Admiral quatre oka not Togo's modern ships far to the south Oleg and Aurora along with the szymczak faced a dilemma over which direction to go many officers favored heading north again and Admiral inka vest is possibly the least effective Admiral in the Russian fleet very easily swayed but eventually he orders them to make for China but is then soon thereafter persuaded to head for Manila instead where it's somewhat less likely that the Japanese would be able to force the now American territory to give up the ships as opposed to the recently defeated Chinese hearing that they're facing off against older Japanese ships the remaining Russian force is heartened and makes per battle but even these older ships are still in better condition than the Russians and used their superior speed to drop back which is probably for the best for them a few protected cruisers in an old Chinese turret I own clad are probably one of the few Japanese forces that Nabokov could competently engage with a hope of victory but of course catoca had helped and soon thereafter Togo's forces appear on the horizon finding himself surrounded and outnumbered 27 to 5 an abortive hole hoists a signal that indicates surrender and calls a war council five minutes into the debate the Japanese opened fire within 10 minutes the Nicholas has six different shell holes below the waterline at his wits end Anna Bogata conscious of the remaining crewmen still alive in his squadron orders the signal be hauled down and the Japanese flag hoisted a much more blatant act of surrender that hopefully won't be missed the others follow suit except for the cruiser Zuma road which notices as a gap in the encircling ships and you is it speed to break through the line and escape out more Togo sends two officers to the Nicholas indicating he is prepared to take an honorable surrender but that Nabokov must come to Mikasa immediately and no attempt must be made to sabotage the ships that are left the Japanese ships looked the Russian Admiral as if they're intact in fact this is only true compared to the Russian vessels Mikasa is sporting more than 30 separate hits shiki Shima has had one of his guns explode Fuji had a main gun blown off by a shell hit from a Russian vessel Nisshin has been practically disarmed and a number of other ships had taken mild to moderate damage still the Imperial Japanese Navy is to very definitely the victors of this engagement Togo allows Nabokov to make a conditional surrender he agrees that he will report the battles outcome to the Tsar and the personal property of the crew will be respected he will also pass on a request to his superiors regarding repatriation if the Russians are still welcome back home that is congratulating his opponents on having made it this far around the world the Japanese Admiral dispatches men to begin securing his prizes and with that the Battle of Tsushima is officially over the three Russian cruisers that had headed south would eventually reach Manila encountering an American squadron of two battleships and three cruisers along the way Aurora of course would go on to take part in the Russian Revolution and survives to this day in st. Petersburg after a long journey including a switch of torpedo boats Ross's Fenske was eventually captured by the Japanese when two of their own torpedo boats found and chased down the two Russian ships that had been entrusted with getting the Admiral to Vladivostok he would be treated for his injuries in a Japanese hospital and eventually repatriated despite his injuries and despite being out of action for most of the battle he would face his court-martial bravely insisting that all responsibility was his as a result of the sentences past when the various officers were commuted by the Tsar to minimal punishments he would die of a heart attack in 1909 Admiral Togo was promoted honored and amongst other things given control over the education of the future Emperor Hirohito he would live until 1934 dying of cancer at the age of 86 in total 21 Russian ships would be sunk captured scuttled or otherwise lost three of them made it to Vladivostok the Japanese would only lose three torpedo boats a number of the surrendered ships would then be taken into Japanese service under new names the battle would effectively end the [ __ ] Russia Japanese war although the conflict would drag out for a little bit longer without any ability to contest the seas and with Japanese supply lines secure Russia was quickly forced to the negotiating table and the war ended with the Treaty of Portsmouth you that's it for this video thanks for watching if you have a comment or suggestion for a ship to review let us know in the comments below don't forget to comment on the pinned post for drydock questions
