The Battle of Gaugamela ***The size of armies are not to scale due to sheer size of this battle*** Alexander marches his troops towards the massive Persian army of King Darius near the village of Gaugamela. The Macedonian king brought the famous sarissa phalanx, hypaspists, Greek and Cretan archers and Thracian light infantry. Along with the infantry, Alexander was accompanied by the Macedonian companion cavalry. The 47,000 Macedonian army formed a slanted battle line. Alexander and his companion cavalry formed on the right flank and Parmenion was given command of the left flank. The Persian king brought a diverse army which was three times the size of Alexander's. King Darius III levied warriors from all corners of the empire, including from Bactria, Egypt, borders of India and Greek mercenaries. He also deployed scythed chariots on the battlefield. Alexander moves the army forward to meet the Persians. In order to avoid being flanked, Alexander shifts his companion cavalry contingent farther to the right bringing the Thracian infantry along with them. This move stretches the Macedonian center line, eventually forming a gap. The chariots push towards the Macedonian lines but they are met with a wall of sarissa spears. The Greek and Macedonian archers open fire on the Persians. The Persian cavalry clashes with Alexander's companions on the right flank. Alexander fully commits to the assault and the companion cavalry sends shockwaves into the Persian left wing. Alexander formed openings in the Macedonian lines in order to easily deal with the enemy chariots. The Thracian warriors arrive to provide Alexander support on the right side of the battlefield as the fighting there intensifies. The hypaspists hold their lines against the Persian numbers. As the battle continues, Darius sends most of his elites to the Macedonian center where the gap formed and to the left flank where Parmenion is in command. As the right flank pushes further ahead, the gap in the Macedonian lines increases. The Persian king sends more of his numerous troops to assault the Macedonian lines. The superiority of the sarissa pike formation is demonstrated and the Persian army has a hard time breaking the Macedonians. However, the sheer size of Darius' army soon may overwhelm the center and Parmenion's troops on the left flank. Seeing that Darius sent most of his elites to the left where Parmenion is, Alexander quickly orders his companion cavalry to move towards the center. This was his plan all along and it seems the Persian king fell for it. Alexander leads a devastating assault through the gap with the intent of reaching and killing Darius. Partially enveloped, Parmenion's troops on the left flank are close to crumbling under the weight of the Persian assault. With the Persians in the center-right pushed back by Alexander and his companion cavalry, Darius and his chariots are now exposed. Alexander pursues the Persian king with intent to kill him once and for all. As Darius flees once again, Alexander sees the problem on the left flank and decides to return to the battle and save Parmenion and his troops. Alexander arrives to Parmenion and performs a rear assault on the remaining Persians. As soon as they learn that their king left the battlefield, the remaining Persians start retreating. Although outnumbered, Alexander won the battle of Gaugamela and the prize for this victory was the Persian Empire. Although Darius escaped, he was eventually murdered by one of his commanders as he was fleeing. Actual size of armies and casualties in this simulated battle were as follows:
