God wants to use our every experience in every part of life to change and shape and mold us and turn this into pure and you can if we cooperate know if we can believe all things are possible amen what does victory really mean with the Christian the greatest challenge but also the greatest joy the Trinity is instinct we are to be steadfast and unmovable good morning once again that's the last time I'm going to tell you good morning because I'm not speaking tomorrow morning it's kind of sad you know what day it is today Friday does time always move this fast and watch the hills okay sometimes faster well today we want to dig beneath the surface of us of every young person and every older person in this room and talk about our hearts we want to talk specifically about guarding our hearts guarding our hearts from dangers that are very prevalent and very pertinent to young people today some of those dangers come from the world that we live in they come from our society they come from our atmosphere and then some of those dangers come from the people that we associate with can come from the people that we associate with so if we're going to find victory like we're talking about last night victory at the root level we're going to be changed from the inside out which is the only change that's that's really worth anything then we need to go to the root level address the bottom line of our Christian experience and we want to do that today today we're going to be discussing guarding our hearts which encompasses guarding our minds and guarding our affections two very pertinent things for this day and age proverbs 4:23 says keep thy heart with what all diligence for out of it are the issues of life what does does that sound like does that sound like quite a job keep thy heart with all diligence amen Solomon kind of Solomon knew what he was talking about and he didn't just say yeah everyone in a while check on yourself keep your eye out know the implication of this verse is that it requires earnest earnest steadfast commitment and a lot of effort but you know if we look at the again the rewards that God's waiting to give us and the the blessings of being a hundred percent God's through and through all the way down to the root there's no question that that any sacrifice is plenty cheap enough so we want to talk about guarding our hearts today where we need to start if we want to guard our hearts if we want to have pure minds we need to start at the thought level you know oftentimes well first let me read you a principle that we find in God's Word in proverbs 23 verse 7 it says as he thinketh in his heart so is he that's right so our thoughts affect or build our habits and our habits form our character and our character decides our destiny thoughts are very important they seem to be insignificant sometimes because no one can see them no one can hear what's going on inside of your head but they are really the foundation for everything that we do our words our actions our emotions all of these things spring from our thoughts sometimes people try to take care of all the external things the behaviors okay I need to stop doing this I need to stop doing that I shouldn't say those words but they don't start with the thoughts and that's like say an engineering firm was trying to come up with a bid for building a skyscraper and they were talking to each other and one of them said you know guys money is really tight right now the economy is down we need to find ways to say we need to find ways to cut corners so why don't we just skip the foundation and just build the rest of it we will save so much money by doing that how long would that engineering firm be in business not very long they wouldn't even think of doing that because you have to have the foundation obviously but say they actually succeeded in building the skyscraper without the foundation which they never could but if they did pretty soon that skyscraper would start to develop cracks and start groaning and swinging side to side and Oh what if they brought the plaster in the paint and try to just patch up all the cracks and paint it over so no one could see that's often what we do in our in our lives in our characters we're trying to patch up the cracks we're trying to put the paint over so no one can see it so we can take care of all these external things when we need to go to the foundation we need to go to the thoughts we live in a world where our thoughts are constantly bombarded with impurity if there was ever a time that we need to be very careful about the things that we are allowing into the avenues of our soul it is now we cannot hope for pure and wholesome relationships with those around us if we do not have a pure and wholesome thought life it's very very important to govern the thoughts and I have I've had a struggle with guarding my thoughts you know governing them controlling them when I was younger I didn't have those habits and so my thoughts would just fly all over the place wherever they happen to want to go and as God began to call to my heart in this area and I began to see the importance of governing my thoughts you know it was a big struggle it's a big struggle to channel your thoughts when they've been used to total freedom and so what I did is I did a word study on thoughts on thinking thought control in the Bible in the spirit of prophecy and that really opened my eyes more than ever to the importance of guarding my thoughts and then I would pray and ask Lord in the morning when my thoughts are going in a wrong direction perhaps I'm thinking about somebody that I shouldn't be thinking about maybe I'm thinking about a subject I shouldn't be thinking about whatever it is interrupt my thoughts Lord call to my heart in a way that I can recognize you know God is faithful to answer that prayer he will interrupt our thoughts and help us to realize that we shouldn't be going down this track but then in that moment I would pray in the morning in that moment when you interrupt my thoughts please give me the strength to do something about it to surrender my thoughts to you and then to replace them with pure and wholesome thoughts because I don't know if you've tried this before but if you're going down a certain track God calls to your heart and you try to just stop your thoughts you've got to replace them with something else our heads are not vacuums I've never met well I've met a few people who say that they can actually think nothing but I am not really sure that's the case I know that I can't think nothing I can't just decide okay I'm just going to stop thinking in there we have to replace our thoughts and ahead of time we can decide one of the greatest ways to replace thoughts is to start after we pray and we surrender our thoughts to the Lord is to start quoting scripture in our mind and if we can't keep our minds on it then we can start quoting it audibly or we can pray you know sometimes I've chosen a specific friend to pray for every time God calls to my heart to change my line of thoughts pretty soon if the enemy knows that every time God is calling to your heart you are praying for the specific friend he's going to figure out that maybe he just thought stop tempt you in this area because this friend is being very blessed by your prayers or maybe it's singing sometimes I've started to sing whatever it is decide ahead of time what you're going to replace your thoughts with so that in the moment when you pray when you surrender to God then you can replace those thoughts and build habits a pure and wholesome thinking we should claim God's promises like I was saying last night resist the devil and he will flee from you those promises are real they are true and having a pure mind is a prerequisite to being able to have healthy strong and lasting relationships not only is it a prerequisite it is fundamentally an elementally vital it can't exist without it in fact I think you would agree with me that today there is an epidemic of dysfunctional relationships especially between teenage young men and teenage young women it's like nothing works if anything happens it's a bad deal was it supposed to be like that no no in fact God has said that he wants us to enjoy quality wholesome friendships because the girls and the boys have a lot to learn from each other and there's a lot in the strengths of both can influence and help the weaknesses of the other girls and boys both ways but why is it that we are in such a case where there where we look at all of the weather that we all the all the relationships may be between our friends or our own friendships with other young men other young women and and so often things don't work there is a reason why Ellen White says it's because not one in a hundred how many not one in a hundred less than one percent how many people are there in this room close to 100 do you know what that means statistically speaking none of us not even one of us maybe half of one of us one not one in 100 girls our pure-minded and not one in a hundred boys have morals that are untainted Wow is that bad that's very bad and yet we look at the world and we look at ourselves and say why doesn't this work there's a reason why it doesn't work thoughts are important they're almost all important keeping one's thoughts pure today is no easy matter but to be a victorious Christian on the outside one must be a victorious Christian and his thoughts or it'll never happen that's both for the girls and for the boys and again I can't I can you know stand here and say whoa victory it's the best thing you know anyone can say that but friends unless you and I are partakers of victory I'm you and I are doing what it takes to be possessors of that power it's not going to change the way we live there are hundreds of thousands of people that crowd into Olympic stadiums to watch the race to watch one person come off on top to watch one person become victorious and yeah their heart pumps me you know when they hear the gun go off their heart pumps fast and like yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah no they're you scream and take pictures and but if they tasted victory do they really understand victory no not a single one of them and for all the time that the Olympian can sit down and you sit us all down and say this is what victory feels like you know it's it's like this and like this and like this we will not understand we will not understand unless victory is ours I can tell you that victory is a fight it's a constant struggle I don't care how long you've been a Christian I don't care how you grew up if you want victory you're going to have to fight for it but friends I can also tell you that while I wake up every single day and fight for greater victory every single day there is nothing sweeter than victory there is nothing sweeter than victory under the Sun and there is no replacement for it there is no counterfeit each man is the Weaver of his own destiny each young woman is the Weaver of her own destiny it's how we choose to cooperate with God especially in our thoughts I have a real burden and I'm just going to tell you the truth I'm going to tell you the truth like I would tell it to my own friends if they were sitting in the chair next to me in my basement office at home is that okay with you this is how it works Satan has so corrupted Society that not only is God's original order of things not only has God's original order things been totally discarded but now Satan's own counterfeit is being embraced by much of nominal Christendom and set forward as God's ideal as God's plan the recent the recent political movements in in places like California for example Proposition 8 are our conclusive proof of that man is setting aside God's ideal man is setting aside what God has set for us from the foundation of the earth marriage between a man and a woman and not just not just the world links but many nominal Christians are saying oh absolutely yeah we should have the we should have the right why is how has society gotten to that place because 100 years ago it would never be that way they would never be that way as Christians we have a duty to counteract the counterfeit God has his ideal Satan has his counterfeit as Christians and I'm talking to all of us in this room it is our duty to counteract the counterfeit and it starts here because it's the thoughts and imaginations of men that move nations it's the thoughts and imaginations of men over the last hundred years that have our society where our society is today and it's easy to sit in our chairs and say well yeah that's them and this is me friends were all the same people and it's our thoughts and imaginations us here in this room that have an influence on society there is this common ruinous misperception misconception that well I'll just I'll just give you an illustration I had a friend this is a number of years ago that was struggling with some with some struggling with his standards in the area of music and he was just struggling especially with you know the fine line where exactly do you put it and I was talking to him and I said you know I I think that especially as you're having difficulty you know delineating where the line should be you should just take a hard stand whatever that means to you take a hard stand until you your mind can you know until you can clarify things in your mind such that you're able to move forward with what the Lord is calling you to do well and he said no no you know no you shouldn't have to you know do that because you know for me to just say okay I'm not listening to any more music with anymore beat at all that would be kind of like accepting defeat because you know we should be able to you know deal with you know these things like a Christian would and you should be able to you know deal with at least a little bit you know some but I said but if you can't determine where the sum is where you know where is your line well you know I don't really know where the line is but but you know definitely no hard and fast because that would be accepting defeat well I think we all know that that's not the case but I think sometimes in our minds and in our lives we live like it is the case friends I want to make something very clear running from temptation is not admitting defeat Joseph knew that running from temptation is not the same as admitting defeat especially especially when it comes to guarding our hearts guarding our thoughts and guarding our imaginations I'm going to tell you something girls and maybe you know this instinctively but I it's possible if not probable that you haven't actually articulated it in your mind to this point the way you carry yourself and I'll talk to you boys in a minute the way you carry yourself the way you dress has a great influence on society because the way you carry yourself and the way you dress affects the minds the thoughts and the imaginations of men and that's what moves Nations let me tell you why and again I'm giving you a trade secret here so listen carefully men were never created to be impervious insensitive or oblivious to the temptations that are precipitated by a modesty what exactly do I mean by that for every Christian young man for every Christian man yes all the Christian young men that you know and most highly respect or look up to for every one of them strength does not mean the ability to resist strength means the will sufficient to turn their face away and there isn't an important distinction their strength does not mean when they're faced with temptation in their face they're able to say okay let me you know deal with this information and categorize it and okay you know and be strong men we're never created to do that a strong man when faced with temptation the only godly response is to turn away now so okay why why does that matter why does that matter because simply for this reason if all the young men are doing all day long is turning their face away and constantly every time they turn their face again they have to turn their face again because there's another one and there's another one and there's another one we wonder why young men and young women cannot have proper and appropriate and healthy friendships there's something wrong there and you know I eventually guess if you could kneel by the beds of some of the young men that you that you respect the most the ones that you would least imagine the ones that you think oh yeah that's that's a quality and massive strong young man if you could kneel by their beds and see their faces in their hands again I'm giving you trade secrets if you could kneel by their beds and see their faces in their hands and see them pleading and working and and praying for strength over and over and over again to fight the same temptations that should be non-existent I think it would change I think it would change some things and I think as young women you would never again plead your right to dress the way that you want to or to dress the way that society says you can because it makes a difference now young man this does not lessen our responsibility not in the least not in the slightest iota not in the slightest sense because if we are called if we want to be strong young men and we are called constantly which I can praise the Lord you have it a lot easier here much easier here thanks to these girls then many young men do in many places but if you're called constantly to be turning your head all day long until you are dizzy that's what you need to do that is what you need to do it is it is more than important it is vital and until we have victory at the bottom line level at the at the very at the most fundamental level until we have victory will never be victorious Christians will never be able to live a life that goes from victory to greater victory so this is my burden for all of my friends we need to help each other we need to help each other as young people God wants to give us an experience where we can learn where the boys can learn from the girls the girls can learn from the boys we can be a mutual blessing we can be a mutual encouragement but friends we need to help each other because Satan knows I mean he set up the whole things from anything everything from the dress trends to the that have been going on for hundreds of years it's not an accident none of it is an accident Satan has been studying for our destruction for thousands of years and it's almost like in this generation all of his tools are being perfected we're coming into the cross hairs and we need to be serious boys by your actions and your attitudes and your commitment to sanctify thoughts you help the girls without even thinking about it without anything without doing anything you help the girls and girls by your actions by your words by your dress and your commitment to modesty modesty that's not that's not just skin deep but modesty that goes all the way through that's that's seated in your heart in a desire to represent your Lord rightly you help boys with or without thinking about it when those things are in place we are prepared we are ready to have the kind of the kind of proper and encouraging inspiring friendships and associations that can bless all of us you know we are blessed to have very open communication in our family and I am so thankful for that and my brother and I have talked a lot about things like this and it has helped me so much his willingness to share much is like he shared with you just now it's helped me to understand how important it is for me as a young woman to have modesty that goes beyond the externals that goes down to the depths of my heart and you know girls today have really lost not just the outward modesty but the essence of modesty modesty is more than what you put on the clothing that you choose to wear modesty means many things you know as we look at the examples of women in the Bible we see a lot of character traits that come out strongly in their lives such as Esther courage and strength when I think of her I think of those things abigail discretion Ruth's loyalty and dedication marry virtue Dorcas industry in a servant's heart all of these things meshed together this is what real modesty is it Springs from the heart it is such a safeguard from the heart for the heart but you know when I was younger I missed the essence of modesty for a long time when I was eight or nine years old we met some very sweet Christian families and my mother at the same time was reading some books that really convicted her to change the way that we dressed and so she did she change her wardrobe she changed her girl's wardrobe and at that time I was so young I actually I really didn't care as long as my clothing didn't get in the way of what I would normally do during the day I didn't care what I wore it wasn't until I started getting into my teens that you know I started paying attention to things and throughout my mid teens I had a time when I was struggling with passive rebellion I didn't recognize it as such but I was and I look back on it now and I can see that but even then I lived up to the standards of modesty what I thought modesty was I was missing the true essence of modesty you know sometimes I would get a shirt and you know new shirt put it on and ask myself will this squeak by yeah I think it will is that what we're doing when we're getting new clothing are we seeing if it makes it past if it's going to be okay if it's going to live up to the rules and the standards in our home or school or are we asking God does this article of clothing represent you does it say to the world clearly this goes for boys too that I am a child of the king of kings these are the questions that we need to be asking ourselves we need to peel back all the layers in our heart and find out what is down there deep what are our motives what is the driving force behind what we do are we modest chaste and pure at heart as I think about how we girls can help our brothers in Christ it's very motivating to me it's motivating to me to be faithful before God and it's motivating to me to be faithful for the sake of our brothers in Christ to not make it any harder for them to be the men that God is calling them to be I've asked God to give me a modest heart to give me a meek and quiet spirit you know our world says that a meek and quiet spirit is something to be ashamed of it's something to look down on but really who are we following we are told that the wisdom of God is you know the world doesn't understand it and so are we seeking after what God wants us to have not according to the trends and fashions of the world are we seeking after what the world may call weakness and yet God calls a gift of great price God will give us the meek and quiet spirit that we are asking for if we are seeking for it with a whole heart he can change the way we naturally are in our personality he can make us modest from the inside out if we are willing girls need to get their attentions off of themselves we all do because a lot of times the reason why boys and girls get into such trouble with each other cannot have a pure friendship with each other is because their focus is not on their relationship with God if their focus is on their relationship with God if they have a solid walk with the Lord if their hearts are resting in Jesus if we find our security in Jesus then we won't be needing the attention inappropriate attention of the opposite gender in order to be fulfilled we will find all of our fulfillment in God and until we're finding all of our fulfillment in God it is very difficult to mean friendship to have friendships that are maintained as godly and appropriate so we need to have our fulfillment in and God alone and then keep our eyes on him as we are associating with one another focus on being a servant instead of what can I get out of this friendship instead of oh let me dress this way or let me act this way or let me stand there so some when so-and-so walks by they might notice me we need to stop using these attention-getting devices that we may use even without thinking let us search our hearts I found it very helpful to actually get the input of my mother and my sister my father my brothers when it comes to these areas of life ask them to point out the areas in my life that I need to improve on areas that I may not be aware of things that I do that are not appropriate because I don't want I don't want to making it any more difficult for those around me I want to have a walk with God that changes my entire life so asking for input has been very helpful we can be friendly without being forward if our eyes are on Jesus if we are a servant at heart and look for the good in others look to do them good we will have those friendships that can be very upbuilding remember responsibility in our hands remember the influence that we have on each other as we seek to associate together let's keep our eyes on Jesus and we can have those pure and wholesome friendships a few other things that we want to also share and that that really affect us at the at the bottom line level and can have a great bearing on our ability to have quality friendships in our teen years it's very interesting this morning while I was at breakfast we got into a conversation about MySpace and Facebook and I promise facebook is on my notes it was already there's the word right there so I'm going to tell you about Facebook what television and video games were when we were in our single digits you know just 10-15 years ago whatever Facebook and MySpace are today and it doesn't you know it's not just Facebook in MySpace it could be Facebook MySpace bloggers Boingo xanga high-five you you name it they're all the same but there's two major problems with these with these services number one is well actually there's two major problems besides the fact that there's lots of potential issues but besides the fact that they're a major waste of time to the extent that many businesses especially many big businesses have completely blocked Facebook on their on their internal internet servers because it was resulting Facebook was resulting in loss of productivity we're talking about big businesses here it's like wow a lot of waste of time and and for the older generation Facebook and MySpace and things like that they're probably things that are that are not so familiar to you but if you're not familiar with what they are you need to be familiar what they are because they are the relevant item in in today's society in fact they're so big last year or probably 18 months ago just to give you an idea Microsoft saw Facebook doing this thing over there he said yeah but that's probably a pretty good investment they paid two hundred and fifty million dollars for a 1.6 percent share so the implied value of Facebook is about 15 billion dollars if you go by that if you go by that stage anywhere between MySpace and Facebook almost half a billion registered users a lot of people but the two main problems are as we discussed this morning a separate identity people are not afraid to put things people put things on Facebook and MySpace that they will not put anywhere else and number one that's a problem because what we do what we say strengthens who we are and number two the influence of our words the influence of what we're putting out there again it's like that quote I read the other day if we could see the influence of our actions of our words or the things we do we would shut it we could not bear the sight we would just topple over right now but the other the other greater problem for us as young people is the the lack of accountability that comes along with these kind of services now okay so you don't use these things while you're here at school but what about when you go home I had an account with Facebook for two weeks I think and the reason I got it in the first place I held out and held out and held out for ever because you know a bunch of people say oh yeah you got to go that you got to get it and I thought you know I don't need it so I'm not gonna do that but I finally decided to get it because there was one friend of mine who had turned his back on God and everything he knew to be right and this is the only hint he was he was sending me invitations this is the only way that I could stay in contact with him so I said okay Facebook for you my friend that's it so I got a Facebook account um and I won't even go into all the stuff but I didn't invite a single soul and before a week was up I had like 60 contacts or something my problem is a lot of people know me a lot more people know me then you know then I know them or whatever however you'd say that and so I was getting piles and piles and piles of invitations well I never accepted invitations to people I didn't know but because of this because of this I don't know the culture of the online community even the people that I knew and I thought I knew really well they were putting stuff all over my wall and I was having to go on my wall three times a day to delete stuff off that was not appropriate I thought you know what I don't need this so I got rid of Facebook the main the main problem with Facebook for us is the lack of accountability because things that you say things that you do things that other people say and other people do if your parents ever find out they'll never find out until after the fact until after you've already sent it or after you've already done it and with many of these services unless you call your friend can you please delete my comment you know there's no way to take it back and it increases the the the level of the level of communication and the level of intimacy in you know in Facebook's own way that that is engendered that is encouraged actually ends up being a liability to the way that we think and the way that we live rather than a blessing not to not to not to mention all the other things that you can get you know ads and pop-ups and all those things now does this mean that Facebook and MySpace and all those things are you know totally comprehensively and clearly morally wrong no a social networking site in and of itself is not morally wrong and I'm not gonna stand here and say if you have a Facebook account get rid of it right now but what I am gonna say is Oh be careful Oh be careful we have heard story after story after story after so you would not you would not believe how many stories we have heard from all around the globe as it is our privilege to travel all around the globe disaster after disaster after disaster from MySpace or Facebook or both we need to be careful friends and we can say oh man let's extreme that's too much that's too you know why is it's a little thing first let me give you this thought this is what I think of when I think when I'm asking myself is this extreme is this too much is it too much to give anything what I say anything that does not strengthen our piety imperils the soul those are not my words everything that does not strengthen our Christian walk puts our soul in danger is that too high a price to pay Facebook is a little thing our thoughts are little things interactions are little things emails are little things but friends if it does not strengthen our character and and and bring us one step closer to heaven it puts our soul in danger I just want to add one more thing before we close here and that is that I have found it so important in order to keep my friendships on a level that is appropriate to be very open with my parents and here you have not just your parents but you have teachers who are really invested in your success and I would encourage each one of you to have an open relationship with them to share with them to ask them for advice even when it's a little bit embarrassing or you think what are they going to think when I tell them this it has saved me from making so many mistakes and I am so grateful and you know if you have some friendships in your life right now long-distance you're just friends you're not you know in a relationship or anything but you realize that those friendships are taking you down the wrong track then for Christ's sake they give those friendships up it is not worthwhile to place our souls in peril over a friendship and for communication I found that long-distance communication between boys and girls it's just very commonplace now a hundred years ago it probably would not have happened but it's very commonplace now just to exchange email addresses and go back and forth and not really have accountability because well you're just friends you're you know there's there's no big deal I'm just a friend with them I want you to take into consideration some things when you are communicating between boys and girls I've heard some people tell me had many girls tell me I will never have an interest in them it's not a big deal my heart is not in danger by communicating the way we are even if it's frequent even if it's lengthy but how do you know where that other person is how do you know where their heart is how do you know that you're not being a stumbling block to them in a sense we are our brother's keeper and so we shouldn't just be thinking about ourselves when we're having this communication just for our own edification just for fun we need to be thinking about those with whom we are communicating as well and realize that we is young people under God we have a high standard to live up to we can't just do things because everyone else does them because it's normative in our society we need to do things because that's what God would have us do as we close we want to sing a song for you actually we're gonna sing the song that we were going to sing last night it is imperative that our minds be clear of all the rubbish but do you know why it is imperative that our minds be clear of all the rubbish so the spirit can dwell there because our minds in and of themselves are you know worth nothing except as they become the temple of the Holy Ghost except as they become the dwelling place for God Almighty the place where he works his hands on this on this earth on this planet dude so we're gonna sing a song breathe on me breath of God a song that talks about the spirit and the work of the Spirit and think as we as we sing of what God is calling you to do what he is calling you what he's calling us this is what these are questions we ask ourselves every day friends what more can I put out of my mind to make more room for you more room for your spirit so that my mind can be pure and free and clear a channel of blessing to the entire world could you hit mark on the piano for us me and three the one me bro until this close with I far oh good ha of the I need to if you kneel with us as we pray father our hearts and minds are sinful and desperately wicked our best attempts are nothing better than rags but you have promised and we believe your promise you've promised that your children will shine like the stars of heaven you've promised that our lives can go from victory to greater victory and we see we've seen this morning that the only way that is possible the only thing that brings final victory on the outside in reach is victory that is internal victory that is comprehensive that reaches into every area of our lives that is where the struggle lies father each and every one of us in this room has dust in the corners of our mind that you want to sweep out and got out of there so that you can inhabit that space with your spirit and so it is my prayer this morning that you would open our minds to what you want us to give you just today we know you never overwhelm us with a picture that's bigger than we can handle so we just want you to give us the step for today give us progressive instructions help us to understand what it is that we need to lay down and then Lord Jesus give us the desire that burns within us until it is an all-consuming fire the desire to be your children the desire to be free and give us the strength and the fortitude and the will to choose that freedom by your grace give us the power also to do whatever it takes to make things right if we need to make things right with someone or some people to stop doing that which inhibits our growth and which causes a brother to stumble we want to be gifts to you we want to put a smile on your face today and we want to be gifts to all of our friends our family and those that have never met you before bless us to this end in Jesus name Amen you
