Michael Madsen doing Quentin Tarantino movies and Batman fan films haha
The photography and direction was good in most of the film. The dialogue was hammy, some delivered ok, some very bad. This is why Take 1 or Take 90 really matters but i suppose due to budget and time, its just not possible.
Not a huge fan of the acting in this one. Aarons joker is really good facially, but the voice feels kinda put on if that makes sense. Also it’s cool that they got Michael Madden as bullock but he was kinda bad? I wish they’d just stick with Gordon or someone else.
I laughed my ass off when Hugo showed up
I've watched a bit of this today. Incredible and doesn't even look fan-made. Have they done any other batman films like this?
I liked it for a fan film but my god it was way too wordy and the acting was oof.
Read some comments saying stuff like this needs a HBO series and I’m just gonna be frank here: whatever you think of Snyder, Nolan or etc. they’re better films on basic creative choices alone.
It’s a great bit of fan service, the costumes are amazing (with exception to the Mad Hatter’s dusted hair), Porter is a fantastic Batman and the characters are truly faithful to their cartoon counterparts- but this is not a good film for a lot of reasons.
Firstly, too much dialogue. Everyone kinda just rambled. Batman tells Bullock to cut the small talk and they end up having a whole conversation about morality. Say what you want about Madsen, the guy works well in a certain range and it feels like the editor used a lot of takes and lines that should’ve died on the cutting room floor.
But this goes for every actor in this film. For such a stoic character Batman really does wear his heart on his sleeve, and in front of the Joker of all people. He’s Batman, why on earth is having to explain himself to people like Bullock or the Joker?
Then there’s the Joker. Props to the guy making his dream a reality, but damn there are some bad choices. I get the Joker is theatrical but did every shot of him have to be so overacted? This calculating villain seemed more fixated the faces he was pulling than actually observing Batman. Even when he could’ve gotten angry ‘you’re a coward’ came out so half hearted and without emotion. Maybe having to wear so many hats for this production split Schoenke’s focus, but he really needed to be more immersed in the character and actually listen to his costar. The dialogue alone was stitched together and a bingo card of things the Joker would say. From The Killing Joke to The 3 Jokers, he at least stuck to a point.
Then there’s the cutting. So many shots ran just a tad too long that they became awkward (e.g. the joker says one line, then we have to watch a full second before he moves into another, Mad Hatter rolling around in pain etc.)
Finally, there’s the twist. It was dumb. A twist for the sake of a twist. Why would anyone think someone as sadistic as the Joker would give Batman any closure? ‘A tiger is most dangerous when it’s cornered.’ This is a Joker that thinks he is dying, they could’ve done a lot with that. Maybe he does something truly reckless or takes the less obvious direction and instead repents- then we’ve got a scene that unravels that whole line of thinking. This could of being a scene of closure in the Joker’s own twisted way, but it was all just some dragged out backdrop to the oldest Batman twist: Because I’m Batman.
Pardon the rant, I’m just so tired of reading comments that praise these works as a way of putting down anything mainstream. These guys should be proud of what they did, but c’mon let’s not let fan service blind us from some basic filmmaking issues.
Was Hugo Strange's moustache cover a nod to JL 2017? Lol
I didn’t care for the writing and how it started off.. or pretty much the story and the Joker was cringe. That’s probably the most intimidating Batman I’ve seen though when he’s standing still.
