welcome to my shop again I've had a lot of viewers tell me that they were just starting the food segment turning or they were going to start to do segment turnings so I thought I'd do a quick video on the very basics and of course the very basics is making segmented rings that's the building block of a segmented turning and there's many kinds of rings different ones thick ones normal-sized ones ones made out of a different material - the spacers in them the whole purpose of the ring of course is to build up the segmented turning the ring is basically what you're looking for a specific diameter you're looking for a specific lip that you need and the most important thing you're looking for is tight joints all these rings have tight joints every one of them even the big ones have tight joints so how do we achieve this well first of all let me say you can make a segmented ring with any number of segments you can make them with five segments you can make them with ten segments you can make them with sixteen or twenty segments or eighty seconds if you want the basic segments where did I put my little drawing I put it somewhere here I'm going to have to find it this is a basic segment right here then I've got it drawn out when the basic segment of course like this this is your cut length your cut length determines the overall diameter of the segment ring these are the cut angles the cut angles of course is necessary to make the segments come together with closed tight joints and that depends on the number of segments what the angle is and this of course is the width to it determines of course just how wide it's going to be and now of course is determined by your thickness of your turning and angular to turn them through if you want a real show angle you make a segment like this so if you cut a ring with 8 segments and your cut length is off let's say by 1/32 of an inch then you've got 8 segments all off by 30 seconds of an inch the whole circumference will be off finished by 1/4 of an inch with 8 segments that won't be enough to hardly affect you but if you're cutting segments for 32 segments per ring and you're off by 1/32 of an inch when you finished your diameter or circumference gives me will be off by one inch and whether through your Dianabol off enough so that you can tell it so that the larger number of segments you're cutting means a more accurate you got to be and the same thing with the angles if you're cutting a ring with eight segments and the angles off point one degrees you've gotten both sides of the segment so that means you're making sixteen cuts so your total air would be one point six degrees you'd have one point six degree opening between a segment somewhere it's easy enough Creek however if you're cutting 32 segment rings and you're off by 1.1 degree when you get done you've got 60 full of pets around it you're going to be up by six point four degrees you're going to have a gap somewhere that's a little harder to correct now making segment rings there's basically two ways to do it that I know of one is the half ring blew up method and there's two ways to do that and the other is the single blew up ring method so today I'm going to go over both of them and show you what the difference is I'm probably I prefer one over the other a couple of things I need to explain here to do this I'm using some cherry wood some cherry shorts I got I'm ripping pieces off the edge here's a piece of it it's about 7/8 inch thick and spied an inch wide I'm going to be using that to cut all the segments for the Rings the grill I'm using a tight bound tool I know it's in a tight mount one bottle but I put that bomb to and when I refill it so there's tight bound to glue a tight bound to this actually sets up faster than most people like to believe when I do two segments together I'll let them set for about three minutes or so before I go on to the next step Boop four segments together and then eight it'll only take just like that's in about three minutes when I glue the half rings together I'll let them set for about ten minutes before I sign the end and then when I do the whole rings together Oh I'm set between ten and fifteen minutes before I run them through the drum sander and that's all the time it takes for tight bound to is set up if you have good glue joints if you have good tight good joint that's all your name if you don't have good tight glue joint you can let it set for 24 hours and you still won't have a good glue joint so if you get good glue joints and it sets up a whole lot faster but most people believe 15 seconds plan time at the most and 15 minutes setup comes and you're ready to work it so that's what I'm going to be using to do these but first of all let's cut segments very two ways and I know love to cut segments basically ones where the table saw on the others on the miter saw I personally use a table saw biggest reason being I don't have a minor side already have a need for it but I have a fairly good table saw and I use a 82 carbide blade to give me good clean cuts so I'm going over to table saw and show you how I cut segments and why I do it that way I'm going at the table so now that I've got on the table saw is simply a slab with an adjustable ribs it's all you need I've seen on the internet some fancy rigs where they fill them up the cup segments you don't really need it to set my fence I've got a pivot point here and I've got all the angles I want mark out here so that's effectively a protractor that's just long and when I said it I get very accurate cuts and that's how I set the fence right here I've got a pink to piss in the flaw here it's nothing but a guide some simpler wood and an angle mounted here it's right next to the blade get a better look at this right here you can see it there's an angle there's a guide and it fits right up next to the blade the reason for this angle next to the blade is so that when I cut the segments that hole away from the blade it's all it's for real relatively easy to go on the slide right here and just this too now not for my stop block I have go the stop block it just attaches to my fence that's it I want to just to stop walk I've moved the fence a little bit you're some company that's all it is so today I'm going to be cutting segments for three wings I'm going to make three rings they're going to be 16 segments per Ray and they're going to be 7 inches in diameter so the first thing I got to do is set my fence the 16 segment cuts which is a local point to five degrees eleven point two five degrees I've got my pivot here and eleven point two five degrees I simply got a mark right here and I'll put it on that mark and I will get very accurate cuts I set that mark with a digital angle finder well then Dakotans four seven inch rings they've got to be have a cut length of 1.4 inches I got a piece here that the same width is my blade Kirk I'm going to put right here I've got this set to 1.4 inches and I'm going to fit it here bring my stop block right up to it oh then we'll always do where I proceeded to take a piece of scrap material cut it and check the cut link if it's not what are you just [Applause] here's just a shade bit too long so I'm going to just it down just a bit and cut another piece [Applause] here that one I like maybe not I'm gonna dress it up just a shade bit not it's good I'm going to leave it there I've seen on the internet like I still rig split made to cut segments they say it's fast but this is really fast all I have to do is cut one and flip it over and cut another so I'm going to turn on the vacuum system that's going to be noisy and I'll cut it a couple of quick segments to show you how it's done and how fast I can tell I kind of I'm going to go ahead and cover those segments with three legs of 16 segments I've got enough segments cut now to make three rings of 16 segments Inc which I'm going to do now I cut them on a decent saw with 82 carbide leg and you can see I've got a nice smooth flat surface on them nice cut surface and I could glue them together of course this one here had a real segment with this one there and get a good glue joint and a lot of people do that and get good glue joints acceptable but one day I cut four pieces good to move them together took the other two and I sanded them and do them together when they were dry I compared to my kingdom joins up and compared them and after that I've always been sanding them so what I'm going to do is salmon over sides it's real quick to do that I'm going to use the net sounder I've got simple clip it fits on it and I've got pushed it this one's for the sixteenth segmented to the 20 to 45 degree angle and I'm going to just give them a real quick sanding I've got over push spirits of course throw their angles this is for 24 this is for all segments I've done a bunch of them so I'm going to take right now and I'm going to send this block real quick just to show how it's done I don't nothing get a good angle Irma just so quick it sounded both sides down and go to extra smooths and floss I'm going to do all of it all the rest of the pieces that we'll get back I've got them all sanded now I'm going to make segments of grains basically there's two ways to make a segmented ring there's the half ring go up and then there's the full ring go up and the half ring to lope you glue them up into two half rings and then you true up the ends and make a full ring now there's two ways to make a half ring drill up the first way is to glue them up first into twos like this then go to the pins in the floor like that and then do the Forge and the eighth make a half ring course that's with sixteen rings you got eight rings you go into twos and then four you have a half playing except so what I'm going to do is get all these into two is first and you do that we can put a little glue I'm gonna use a rub going drink a small amount of glue smear it all wrong get it everywhere and then run them back and forth can I get resistance rile them up of course and want them dry it's all there is to it so I'm going to go ahead and pull them all up in twos I've got them all good together now into pairs so what I'm going to do now is just do the power and the force I'm going to go ahead and do that get them off meet in the force just take a minute to do that make sure they're lined up hood moving all times before let me get the rest done real quick I got ammo loot in the fours now and not only not upset for just two or three minutes before I do them again it don't take long let's make your stick and you put them together they set up real fast so now I'm going to glue them into the H for the half ring real joy position I'm real good hitting execute on the way so I can see where the joint is and lined up right turned out of the life looks like a lot to halflings here in just a second you're going to end up sure it's tight and we have two offerings now now before I show you how to hook the half rings together I'm going to show you the other way to make kathleen's that's got 16 segments set up here and I've seen on the internet and someone said you can put them like this but new between each joint except for these two joints and then travel up and you'll have two half rings one of them up like pillows and we'll have to have rings and then you can screw often don't you get no later well that's true except for one problem I guarantee you the gap won't be for the younger dudes are will be well good joint is so you're actually accomplishing nothing by doing this but there is a trick to make this work that you're doing to make this work is cut a couple of dolls I'm just using these girls going to learn the joints that you don't have to go in go right the middle of the joints leave on the static going until I tighten it up and glue them up like this get the builds in the summer with the joint let me tighten this up so you take a good look and we tighten it up here a second force on it make sure this is right okay now this is what we've got we've got eight segments on each side and we got downs here the dells will allow the segments to pivot here so that it tightens up on the rest of the joints and we can glue up to good hair rings so that's what we're going to do right now click on this include two half rings the delves between them builder then get on a men two pieces of twos and fours may let me take this off and we'll go ahead and go them up so I'm gonna put blue on all the joints it goes - is it exactly opposite holding each other you can get some glue out of this model I have put the gülen's how pretty so know how to refill it a little bit low think I've been making too many videos okay let's get some glue on these here's a like hos flying so we got blue on all the joints except those two clapping the barrels yeah during a start if I can squeeze the old tongue and and now let's go wrong make sure all edges are lined up turn your mind that good putting down some more Oh okay we have got to have to include up which is also great breath for a while now and I don't really like this method at all either but the long drive will have to have rings the ends on the bulb and Crudup now well we got to do is put these two together and clamp them little one at a time so I'm just going to show one and don't take much glue the little Google that little bonus make sure they come together right put your down another set for a few minutes little bit up the other on the same line and we'll have our first two rings made we've got four half in South these two were made by going to pieces and then four pieces and then a thesis now we've got to true up the end he's come out pretty true pretty close and grow them together and these two were mine I use in the down pin and again they're pretty close but we got to cruel not to do that I'm going to use to this founder you just slightly standing judges mother truth wanted to know when the edges are cruel what we're talking then I'm going to hold them up against this number and turn them real lightly village ox gone simple [Applause] well as long I'm going to do the other three now we've got two rings speeded up now both made for the half ring deal with it I'm going to set these aside right now and move on into the third method or the second method which is the single ring bullet which I much prefer the less have a bit of a learning curve yes but I like it a lot better it's quicker and I can get a plot of ring and I'll show you why when I do it first thing I want to do it got these 16 segments most wanted ready to go first thing I'm going to do is dry cotton a couple good and tight and I'm going to hold them up to the line and look for gaps and you need to joint now this one's good simply because I got my tools adjustable but when you first start out you're going to get get these are exaggerated but if you look and you get a gap at the top that means though he cut it enough of an angle you get a gap here to burn them that means I could it commencement angle so if they get a gap let's say I get a gap at the top so I need more angle on them I'm not going to recut 16 pieces Omega just my tools a little bit wrangling to recut 16 pieces what I'm going to do is pull out one segment I'm going to mark out segment so I'll know which one applies if a little mark on it and I want to chop one side of it and I'm going to adjust the angle on this piece so what I'm going to do is use the sled and the push stick see if I can get a good shot here I want more angle so I'm going to do is put a shim right here can crease the angle of the standing cup for women left angle I'll put the ship go here and I was founded so I'm going to take this piece I'm going to increase the angle a little oh I don't really need that piece and I'm just going to send up all the chalk marks on it and I will increase the angle on somewhat do that what it now Thunder door I'm creeped out a little just a lifetime you see there's still a little bit of chocolate so I have to send it a little bit more you see it's cut the inside morning as the edge which is increasing man alone just saw purple my god increase them I put it back in the ring and check mas there's a really good gap I would pick two pieces opposite each other and found them but don't make any difference which piece you sound if I have a really big gap I've gone to so this ring here is ready to go the motel you adjust the angle zone it wasn't really that hard then again like I said it takes a little bit of learning curve well how much the found them nobody you need to find two pieces are just wanting to get it right it in effect this rings ready to go and I'll show you a big advantage of doing the single ring grew up it's important when you're making the feature ring so let's take the clamp off of course after I something and put it back in I hold it up to the light again and check it just to make sure so I got in one we're gonna do this right what now don't really take as much P as a lot of people think it does you get a little I don't take a lot of you whoa I'm really here to take the last station those piece I'll put you on both sides tentacles I might have to try the Dino intends to let the glue off sometimes health the only reason I'm going to pop them down so he says a single ring would come pretty close here I got this rig over drunk this has got to be over in killing okay let's take them down some check to make sure that all lined up correctly Oh interception did the scream raised up the middle of the string right you know well using a sigma-ring book but I can do he's put the dumb Python and plop them down you keep of that like I said this is important when you're doing a feature ring cause you want all pieces of the future ring to line up so to talk this down just to make sure and then I'll cut it the clamp up and just want to come out pluggers and he'll the children's eyes your navel now I can pull this off just that quick and I went pretty flat much blonder the under-21 left out dry for a few minutes and then we're gonna throw them to the drum sander clean up all three and take a look at so what if I got it now I've got three rings home so no ometer they've all got tight joint twelve one over the half single one was made with a single rings up but they different is the single ring girl that sounded to start with so what I'm going to do now is run them all through the drum pounder and see what they look like after they get sounded off a little bit so I'm going to go ahead and do that we'll get back up there point getting hot in here I got the air conditioning hands up so I can video too much noise if I don't turn them off so what I got now we've got three rings all the same size this one's got tight joints this one's the Localism clean up to pieces and four men eight and see all the joints are tight to same diameter this ring here all the joints are tight on it it's a second Armour this is a one that was done with two Dells moving up to half rings and this is a single ring you up again all the joints are tight and it's the same diameter so really there's more than one way to make the basic segmented ring solo depends on which way you like best or which way you find the easiest and like I said I started off throw them up two by two then I went to the down that that men I find me we can single ring group which I find is quicker and easier and of course my play still going to take a little bit of learning especially on how to cut the segment's to fit when they don't get cut one or two segments that there you have it so if you got any questions or any comments please lady come to email to ask me questions if you want and I appreciate you watching the video hearing come back and see me next time
