I was fortunate to be at quite a few of these games. When at home, you could feel the excitement every time Barry would touch the ball. At away games, you could feel the fear. It was fucking amazing.

Late in the game during the 1991-1992 Divisional Playoff win against the Cowboys, my buddy turned to me and shouting to be heard over the crowd declared, "This is gonna be the first of many."

Last year he died never seeing the Lions win another playoff game.

What Isn't talked enough about Barry are his eyes and his intelligence. His eyes always found 2-3 options and his fast thinking chose the correct one. There are players that are as quick as him but none that could process the field in front of him the way he could. He was getting hit at times while getting the ball and still made the guy miss. He was always mentally ahead of the defenders and didn't hesitate once he decided on the correct path. If there is one thing you can't emulate about him its his eyes and mind. The speed the power other guys have that you can get that in a gym. Barry had something else.

One thing that amazes me, and there are many amazing things about Barry, is how he slips out of defenders hands. I'm not talking about his spins and jukes, but when it appears a defender has hands on him and he just slips away like a greased pig.

every guy in the National Football League the thing they worry about is they don't want to be in any of his commercials and he's putting a whole bunch of him in his commercial yeah today he was a member of the 1990s all-decade team his number 20s retired by the Detroit Lions he is a pro Football Hall of Famer and a living legend aside from the numbers do you know people look at you is probably the most exciting learning back there were the place [Music] he grew up in a household where his father kept reminding him that he's no Jim Brown no matter what Barry did it was not going to be good enough to be better than Jim Brown berry being an undersized running back you have a chip on your shoulder one day I can say about my mindset back then is it I was extremely serious about football Sanders my last real high school coach you are just basically a gang of all and said you know he's do it to do this lightning quick cuts and ankle breaking moves tomorrow night at Oklahoma State picks off the 1988 football season the big question is Stillwater can kick returning wizard Barry Sanders replace all-american Thurman Thomas in the backfield let's go back 30 years now to 1988 to that season to Oklahoma State was just legendary perhaps the greatest collegiate football season in NCAA history from the first kickoff of that season that I returned for touchdown they just kept getting better from there [Applause] touchdowns 34 n-c-double-a record Barry Sanders you're looking at only five of the 24 NCAA records that he was responsible in five eight he was overlooked by most Division one schools this cowboy is 5 foot 8 197 pounds my goodness two of my thighs equal one of his I mean he's a strong little guy he had a chance to talk to him what were your impressions I mean he's not a big guy well he's cut great legs to those thighs or as big as my well perfect timing but he is a very powerful young man very humble key has also made his mark in the race for the Heisman although it really wasn't a photo finish the race for this year's Heisman was as memorable as ever he gave the ball the official one of theirs unlike many Heisman winner his Barry Sanders season was not keyed by anyone giving play it off the record the Thurman said against Iowa State last year were 293 I was 307 rather a season filled with superlatives Rodney Peete he emerged as a candidate in midseason and then rushed his way to the top regardless I look back and reflect on the year you unhappy kozaczek standards [Applause] you can describe as the eloquence that he just went by Rose earring and Lydell Mitchell as far as touchdown scored in a single season and we've still got a couple of ball games left [Applause] the 1988 winner of the Heisman award his Barry Sanders Saavik finishes the regular season with 2553 total roughing yard back in 1989 when he was coming out of college the Detroit Lions almost didn't draft Barry Sanders I like at this time to introduce to you when the fires running backs in the United States of America our number one pick Barry Sanders the man had a Heisman Trophy was only 5 foot what would happen the first time he got hit for real of course if anybody in Detroit was waiting for that hit they're still waiting here's nobody ever squared up Barry Sanders his first time in a Detroit lion uniform also his first time in path no running back in history could have made something out of nothing more than Sanders did with the Detroit wearing number 20 Billy Sims his old number coming up in advance [Applause] and you everyone is imagine what would be like to be the best and he was the best Lyons needed a franchise but and Barry had that all away the offensive line the team there on the coats escaping to see everything else you say just was the best you seen with your own eyeball and I think most people say Barry Sanders [Applause] and Barry was playing he was at the top of his game and he was the guy everyone was calling touchdown Barry Sanders first walk Barry Sam's greatest running back Barry Sanders has ball bearings and his angel married somebody that you just you hope you tackle you know it's it's not like you're gonna go out and say I'm going to put a good lick on you just hope you get it I've already put Barry in the class by himself it's Barry and then there's everyone else [Music] various young for a running back to he came up that he's twenty years of the things he do I just unbelievable I've been a fan of berry even look long before I was in the know when it's your turn to tackle Barry Sanders Barry Sanders was the absolute hardest out period I mean we played we played a game and everybody missed him on a single plane his second full season of the NFL number 20 has clearly established himself as both the most humble and most spectacular runner in the league an especially approachable young man Sanders treated the country to a sample of his skills on a Monday night in December Barry Sanders jaw-dropping every run was like and talked about we we said Pat mahomes most exciting player walking for now Barry Sanders probably the most exciting player I've ever seen [Applause] it honestly doesn't seem fair just like play Frogger out there going every which way [Applause] he cuts left and then fact right but parts of his body make you think of one of those world wireframe models from computer animation and he would run into a pile and he got the feeling that it's as if the pile gave birth to another long run by Barry Sanders the guy's just an electric that's tough to tackle [Music] [Applause] Sanders played four bad teeth so many bad teams this was a different time a different era where you looked at your running back and he wasn't interchangeable you still talking about somebody like Barry he is almost the same approach to it things you could never see with your bare hands Sanders touchdown following season Sanders added the first of four league rushing title he made it is still on his feet tiptoes his way along the sidelines if he doesn't have a good team around him I think they may have made the playoffs once and they give us the ferry sail does he picks up some still on his feet imagine chance we get Sanders you keep trying to contain try to contain Johnson he slips through it he's gone no signal he's still on his feet as Talent zero - turn by the [Applause] hold it here and here's our guy and watch how many times he just turns up on with the 360 what's this load through the ground built Volvo's four-wheel drive Barry Sanders run the god is trying to tackle him but he's got it back to Barry think if he camp on it looks like some kind of demonstration football video game where the physics are broken where some setting got messed up in their running backs feeder electric and can't get knocked down no matter what he just squids around and I used to get into these discussions with people here I go you know who's better running back Emmitt Smith or very sandy I said well Barry's a better running back he was just Barry played on a bad team it was a great running back on a bad team it's a difficulties when he's got he's the only guy he's the only guy [Applause] there is no other players on offense that you need to address that you're fearing get your 2007 the Detroit Lions Club 138 Mitchell again the very second he Jukes makes a good cut and he leaves people out there getting hurt just trying to just slide move around with him what a job Barry Sanders not only had to longevity he didn't he and hit only did with him at Smith and Walter Payton did but in those prime years it's just scooters Barry up the middle thirty five nine seasons all of them about above fifteen hundred yards five yards to carry on [Applause] Vader Sanders I mean I mean guys just miss her whenever he sees everything [Applause] [Applause] [Music] darnelle Barry Sanders i-formation then the Barretts a big pile of guys and he dances in place and he lets the defense fall all over themselves [Applause] - Chicago Bears [Applause] Center tide today the fifth yard plus straight rushing C's 11 straight 100 Allen's record there's a [Applause] you're gonna see the total package here in Barry Sanders Rock [Applause] Randee what a classic example of a guy making his own room with those shifty ankles of his he gets into the open field and he starts slipping through the hands of tacklers with a toe pointed out behind him almost lovely there are so many running backs now that identify you as their favorite player growing up and that they tried to model their game after you I don't know if that's possible because you were so instinctual you were so unique were so creative [Applause] four touchdowns on the afternoon for Barry Sanders I don't know that anyone who's ever had a football in the army [Music] be pulled the Lions into the playoffs almost by himself five times the Detroit Lions you better stay on your block downfield because you just never know when this guy is going to break it the explosiveness is right there just good feeling he just knew banners in watching sitting and watching guys do get their hands on Sanders one of his feet slides left and 1/4 foot plants and his middle goes one way and his top goes another way and you just he just slips away but his fake he reads the field he sees a Joe who's gone it looks impossible but with Barry Sanders it was real [Music] Bend's without breaking in slides left and right and deforms just enough and pops back up [Applause] [Music] [Applause] yard or better touchdown run I love the way they got runs when I when I grow up I want to run this life it's not so much speed and power as it is virtuosity of course we could think of lion football the last decade you think of one thing do you think of running back Barry Sanders sliding bending curving pointing virtuosity a man born with a gyroscope inside 1997 I was with a guess you had to play the line at Detroit if we won we go to playoff they made bigger the crowd this final game of the regular season underway and we spent all week working on stopping very sad Barry Sanders goes for another rushing title needs 131 to hit the 2000 mark we had a trial of guys we'll get our most elusive guy and having tried to break the trial everybody work on leverage leverage leverage at Sanders says rush for 100 yards or more in an NFL record 13 straight game he could be calm right now that a storm can happen in the next five minutes and the fact he has only 20 yards in the first half today gives the Jets defense very high marks well that dick that the thing is with Barry Sanders a lot of teams kind of stopped me for a while 50 or 60 yards we are pretty good to 3/4 a game and then Barry did what Barry does [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] needs 60 one more to hit mm and I think that that he made that line would be really good and you never know where he's gonna go [Music] [Applause] - [Music] [Applause] Liman to share this accomplishment with vari sand and for him [Applause] years I knew him I love anybody College and our tail we won average Sanders season away from breaking the NFL's all-time rushing record the 31 year old today announced he is retiring from pro football running backs don't play that it's a brutal job at the time I think fans especially flame Barry I think a lot of fans feel he's gonna actually get a shot at grabbing he has a real legit shot every game after hit after he won average berry season from becoming the NFL's all-time leading rusher and that meant something that meant something to a lot of PNG maybe a few years and then you limp home why would a guy who if he just played one more season would have broken the all-time rushing record why would that guy so close immortality' just wet but I think as time has passed I know I have changed my view that I think without a doubt the Lions are complaining and bury at the ripe old age of them 51 probably can't give you 100 yards in a game but probably close to I love to watch it there is a pretty good tackler the Barry Sanders just made it feel so foolish nobody brings it home [ __ ] [ __ ] nope [Music] you [Music]
