in the beautiful coral reefs of the indo-pacific region thousands of different marine species live together peacefully from the tiny nudibranch to the sea snake and the turtle one of the most fascinating fish that has made coral reefs its habitat is the Barracuda barracudas over the years have developed into perfect predators which places them very high up on the food chain with this torpedo-like body and dagger-like teeth the Barracuda is built to hunt in the ocean and that's exactly what it has been doing for the past 50 million years more than 15 different species of Barracuda roamed the world's oceans depending on the species they range in mature size from under 10 centimeters to over 2 meters in length they all have very similar body structure and fearsome appearance found primarily in the indo-pacific region Chevron barracudas can be easily distinguished by their 20 chevron shaped dark bars the chevron or black tail Barracuda as it is often called can grow up to 90 centimeters and is often found in schools a school of Barracuda is called a battery one of the most impressive features of the schooling fish is their ability to swim coordinated the yellowtail Barracuda grows up to sixty centimeters in length and can be identified by two brown or brownish yellow stripes on its body this is one of the smallest Barracuda species and are commonly found throughout the Indo West Pacific the yellowtail Barracuda can usually be found in a battery hanging in shallow reefs and its fringes they feed on small fish on the coral reef to distinguish the great barracuda from other species you can look for the black spots on the lower side of its body the great barracuda is one of the largest of all the species of Barracuda it can grow over 2 meters in length and weigh over 45 kilograms this fish has sharp teeth and very powerful jaws all these characteristics make it one mean looking fish barracudas the all sorts of fish and other marine creatures depending on what is available in their habitat they usually prey upon snappers clownfish and butterfly fish and even sometimes squid they are attracted to anything fast-moving and flashy that's why they usually hunt fish with golden or silver scales they have a large gape which allows them to feed on extremely large fish such as groupers by chopping they enjoy the chase and tend to lose interest in prey that is not moving the great barracuda are solitary and not found in schools barracudas are one of the most impressive and intriguing animals to see in the ocean contributing to the reefs beautiful surroundings just as any other wild animal they need to be treated with respect they have been swimming in our oceans for millions of years and show fascinating behavior more research and preservation work has to be done to better understand their nature and secure their safety for the future you you
