hey there welcome to the channel my name is James and here at 20th and 21st movies we are about all things Cinema all right I am super excited as of the time I'm recording this video on Saturday morning early Saturday morning June the 22nd 2024 as I sit here right now we are just a few few short days away from the bars of& Noble 50% off Criterion Collection sale for the month of July 2024 and I am super super excited about it I've got a number of titles that I'm planning to pick up I put a video of my personal wish list on the channel the other week so definitely check out that video when you have a chance but in this video today I'm going to share with you my recommendations of some titles that you ought to consider adding to your collection so I've got about a dozen single release editions here and I'm also going to recommend three box sets that you ought to consider adding to your collection as well so sit back relax and let's get into these Barnes & Noble 50% off Criterion Collection sale recommendation for the month of July 2024 let's [Music] go all right we are talking about Barnes and LEL 50% off Criterion Collection sale recommendations for the month of July 2024 this is a sale that Barnes & Noble has done for a number of years in the month of July and November where they sell criteria collection releases at 50% off so we are expecting that sale to commence within a few days as of the time I'm recording this video so I'm super excited about that so I've got some recommendations that I'm going to start off with starting with the film that is shown up here this is the worst person in the world starring Retta rinv who won best uh leading actress performance at the can's Film Festival back in 2022 I believe this is a film from 2021 from director uh Yim Trier and it is a fantastic film it comes in at spy 1132 in the Criterion Collection and it is the worst person in the world Retta rinv does an amazing job playing a young woman in her early 30s or just entering her 30s who is trying to discover herself trying to figure out what she's going to do with her life trying to figure out love romance career finding herself and really just discovering who she is as a person and where she wants to go with her life this is a wonderful wonderful film I really appreciate the turns along her journey that's laid out in this film it's a bit unconventional it goes in places you don't necessarily expect and I really appreciate that about this film this is a film that I just really enjoyed it is uh in Norwegian with English subtitles so it's about 100 27 minutes it's in color it's 2021 film new 2k digital Master beautiful picture beautiful presentation this is a new film from 2021 so it came out within the last 3 years so you know you can expect a very nice looking clean picture and that's what you're getting from this film the worst person in the world from y King Trier starring the wonderful Vanetta rinv so really good film that you ought to consider adding to your collection in July 2024 now another film to consider adding to your collection is a film that I have seen in Barnes & Noble for a number of years each sale whether it's in July or November I would go through the the selection in whatever Bars & Noble I'm in here in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area and I would always see this title and I would look at it and I would consider picking it up but I always held off and now I'm glad I did because L hang or the hate got a 4K upgrade this year so I'm really glad I never picked this one up because I got to experience this for the first time on 4K Ultra HD and I have to say this film that was originally shot in color from what I understand but is presented in black and white looks absolutely stunning on this 4K this is an absolutely beautiful 4K image folks and this is a tremendous film about three young men in France in one of the violent suburbs of of Paris navigating their way through a course of about 48 hours just experiencing the violence in the Mayhem in the suburbs of Paris what I like about this film is that this presents Paris and France not in the usual romanticized way that we normally think of this place but it presents it in a gritty aesthetic that is true to the you know area that these young men are living in in these suburbs outside of of of the city of love so to speak so this is laane really good film by Matthew citz I didn't know that Jodie Foster had a big uh role a big hand in this film and so it was good to hear her do an introduction on this film and that's one of the special features but this is a really good movie that you ought to consider adding to your collection it's called Lan or the hate it is in French it comes in at 97 minutes so it doesn't hold you very long and it is a stunning 4K picture so check out lahan I'm glad that I finally experienced this I'm glad that I waited until it came out on 4K and it is a good experience it's one of my favorite releases of the year so far it has a good chance of making my top 10 but we shall see all right another title that I recommend that is on 4K Ultra HD is a title that is from the 1930s it actually came out yeah 1939 so 19 1939 was a huge year in film The Wizard of Oz came out that year uh Gone With the Wind came out in 1939 a number of incredible films came out and a film starring Humphrey Bogart and James Kagney called The Roaring 20s from director R Walsh came out in 1939 as well this is a 4K Ultra HD release it's a fantastic film it talks about uh you know going through this is the Roaring 20s so these characters came out of World War I they got into the 1920s this whole prohibition period that went in place where alcohol production was was made illegal in the United States and so that created a lot of organized crime around the production and sale of alcohol illegally and these characters are involved in that and this is just a really nice film it's a nice historical piece and it's part of the reason why I love watching films from this period of time and older films because you get some perspective on history so I really really like this film this is a nice 4K Ultra HD Edition that I think is one that I highly recommend and I think you should definitely consider exploring if you like if you like older classic films you know a lot of people don't so if you don't then you know skip this one but if you do like older classic films in black and white this is one you ought to consider adding your collection it's a nice 4K presentation and whenever you're getting these 4K presentations with Dolby vision of these black and white films classic films you know you're getting usually a very nice picture and this is no exception this 1939 film looks so organic and so alive and so like fresh with this 4K presentation so highly recommend the Roaring 20s from director R Walsh she also has a high Sierra in the collection starring Humphrey Bogart so that's another one to consider picking up that's on blue rate so highly recommend that one as well so that's a little bonus recommendation but yeah definitely consider adding The Roaring 20s to your collection all right next on my list is a title that was one of my absolute favorite releases of last year in fact it was my favorite my favorite release overall last year and it is a film from director Ridley Scott starring Gina Davis and Susan Sarandon you also have Brad Pit excuse me I actually dropped it oops let me pick it up oh my goodness I'm being clumsy today being clumsy Filman Louise folks Filman Louise 4K Ultra HD spy number 1180 in the Criterion Collection this is folks one of the best 4K pictures that you will see of any film okay whether it's an older film a newer film and the the reason why I say that is because of the Landscapes and the and the environments that's captured in this film this is a road trip movie these women are on the Run great story great cast great acting great cinematography this is just a beautiful film to see they're going through the American southwest and so those Landscapes are brought to life and it just looks absolutely stunning I mean this is a I mean some of the scenes will just literally take your breath away in terms of how clean and how vibrant and how rich and how Lush they look on 4K Ultra HD it's just an absolutely beautiful film to watch and this 4K presentation does a great job it's 4K Dolby Vision the whole works you're getting a 5.1 surround DTS HD Master audio soundtrack so this is an amazing film I saw it in its entirety for the first time last year and just enjoyed it just a fantastic film fantastic release all the way around of a Ridley Scott film starring Gina Davis and sus Susan sandon Spina 1180 dman Louise all right so the next title that I'm going to recommend here is a title that is from of course Franco zeph relli uh production this is a film that had a little bit of controversy with the main leads um actually suing uh over uh the way that they were the way that they were portrayed in this film and I'm not sure kind of how that all settled out but this is a 1968 film it is a fantastic Blu-ray release from Criterion it's spy number 1171 and it is of course of a classic tale from William Shakespeare but it's Romeo and Juliet so it's one of the great Shakespeare adaptations this is Franco zepelli Sublime take on the bars Immortal romantic tragedy and it is a really really good one this is so good folks so nice this is a 4k digital restoration and it looks really nice on this Blu-ray disc you know it really does I mean as much as I like getting 4K releases and you know a lot of us collectors want to get everything we can on 4K you know a lot of these Blu-rays look absolutely stunning and amazing and especially with a nice 4k digital restoration it looks fantastic I mean this is a beautiful beautiful looking picture from this film from 1968 and um you know you have Oscar winning costumes of cinematography this is Shakespeare at its most deeply felt and passionately alive this is spy number 1171 this is a fantastic release from Criterion doesn't have a ton of special features on this but the presentation looks great it's a beautifully portrayed story it's a great adaptation of the Shakespeare story so highly recommend Romeo and Juliet all right because it is July this is the July Barnes noal 50% off criterian collection sale is the month of July it is summertime we as I'm recording this is the third day of summer officially and because it's summertime there is a great time no greater time to watch this film of course Tim over at Tim talks talkies loves this film and so do I this is a fantastic film starring this is from David lean and stars the wonderful Katherine heurn as a just a lonely middle-aged American Tourist who finds herself you know in Italy she goes through different areas of love and uh just exploration um and it's just beautiful it's a beautiful portrayal of Katherine hird in her middle-aged years giving a wonderful performance and just just a beautiful film I mean the the picturesque land Landscapes her performance the different dynamics of the relationships that she is involved in and how she navigates that and sort of where it you know leads really really good stuff it's definitely a story worth exploring in the summertime and at any time but especially this time of year definitely check out summertime this is a Blue-ray upgrade of spying 22 in the collection so some of you might have the old old DVD if you don't this is a great time to pick up this Blu-ray edition of summertime I saw it for the first time when I picked it up either last year or the year before and um just amazing amazing amazing film it's also of course because it's summertime the Paris game starts July the 26th I think it's the opening ceremony so if you're into the Olympics you might want to consider either that big Olympics box set or if you don't want to splur and spend all the money on that got a couple of Olympics releases you ought to consider picking up so we have the Tokyo Olympiad which is spine 155 in the collection so this is from the 1964 games in Tokyo fantastic fantastic film you ought to check this one out and then visions of eight this is Munich 1972 Olympic Games and these are both great films in that whole Olympics catalog that Criterion has and I definitely recommend both of these titles of course you have here Tokyo Olympiad really really nice to see the portrayals of these games you know from previous years this is from 1964 and then of course visions of eight this one is pretty cool because here you have eight directors who were each given the assignment of choose a particular event during the games and just put your own cinematic flare and vision uh put your vision to that particular event so you have the beginning you have the strongest which is weightlifting by my zetterling she has an has a set in the collection um and just some great great ones uh olon sben the father of African Cinema Cal Le director osma sben he actually shot some footage for this but it ended up not making the cut for some reason uh otherwise it would have been visions of nine but these are the eight directors in visions of eight so this is a wonderful wonderful release from criteria and I highly recommend so if you don't want to spend the money on the full Olympics box set which I have not myself picking up a couple of these U single Edition uh Olympics features is definitely recommended as we get ready to enjoy the upcoming Paris 2024 gam so couple of Summer Olympics uh to consider and now another release that takes us back a number of years dealing with a story that is a a true story that is harrowing and presented amazingly and beautifully in this particular Edition this is the passion of Joan of Arc by director Carl th dryer 1928 film amazing amazing film and the actress uh Renee falconetti legendary performance her haunting face um is just shown here and she is she is absolutely stunning what makes this release incredible is of course the film itself but it's presented in a couple of different ways you have your choice of scores to Listen to In This film and it is so good so good folks I mean this is a beautiful release from the Criterion Collection with some nice special features you have an alternate presentation of the film at 20 frames per second so you can see it 24 frames or 20 frames and that does sort of change your perception of the way the film is presented as well as the different scores that you can listen to so it's a new 2k digital restoration of the film it's presented at 24 frames per second you have the alternate presentation at 20 frames per second with the original Danish intertitles you have three scores you have Richard einhorn's voices of light won by gold fraps wool Gregory and Porter sheds a Utley and won by composer and pianist Ma yanita you have an audio commentary on here this is a fantastic release folks it's a great film it is an arresting film a stunning film that portrays cinematically a historical event and is just absolutely amazing so I think she I think Jonah Arc was in the 15th century if I'm not mistaken but it basically Chronicles the trial of Jonah Arc so this is an amazing film great film great release from Criterion highly recommend it it is spyed 62 in the criterian collection all right this is a film that I absolutely love I have the 4K release from the studio I believe but this Blu-ray release of parasite is absolutely phenomenal this has the black and white version which is definitely worth checking out and this is a fantastic release from Criterion of special features this is the bongjun ho film that I believe will go down as as a just a classic it is Parasite what an amazing film this Korean film is presented in Dolby atmas here you have a Dolby atmas soundtrack a new 4k digital Master this Blu-ray looks pretty much as good as a 4K release it is just absolutely phenomenal this film by bong junho is so entertaining so good and I simply cannot recommend it enough it is one of the great releases of 2019 and it is I didn't see it until after the Academy Awards in 2020 and it is the best film that I saw in 2020 it is so good and is now one of my favorite films one of my top 25 favorite films another film from a director that is one of his legendary releases from director Spike Lee the wonderful director Spike Lee his film from 1989 and it is is do the right thing do the right thing is spy 97 in the Criterion Collection and I highly highly recommend this release it is this nice Digi pack this Edition was on DVD for the longest time and so I just waited and waited and waited and it finally got a Blu-ray release and I think did someone release it on 4K let me know in the comment section but it would be really cool if Criterion did did a 4K upgrade I don't know if I would be in a hurry to pick up the 4K upgrade but that would be a great option for people if that happened this is a new 4k digital restoration looks great on this on this Blu-ray disc this film comes in at 120 Minutes right at 2 hours it's from 1989 and it deals with a very hot summer again you know these are a lot of these films are films that deal with the summertime right this is a hot summer in this New York City neighborhood and it is a record high temperatures and racial tensions are at an all-time high and you have mooki the character played by Ley working you know through that whole tension going up against Denny AO and just a fantastic cast overall you have the mayor mother's sister Mr seor love Daddy Tina Sweet Dick Willie bugging out radio Raheem s Pino veto Lee mooki you have them all and these are amazing characters amazing presentation and just a great film of a very hot day where racial tensions are reaching a fever pitch in on the streets of New York City in the Bedford stent neighborhood great film do the right thing spying 97 in the Criterion Collection and if I didn't mention it parasite is spying 1054 in the criteria collection so yeah so great releases so far I got two more single releases ago then I'll go over these box sets all right we're going to go back to the 1970s one of my favorite decades in all of Cinema and we're going to go through a film that stars Martin Sheen and spaic and it is from 1973 Terrence malx Badlands folks this is an amazing film this is one of those titles that I would love to see get a 4K release the cinematography by Terence Malik and this film is so beautiful this is like a body cish typee film starring Martin Sheen and Cissy early 1970s really really nice film Burning Love on the planes on the Great Planes in 1959 this is a really good film that I highly highly recommend this is a new restored 4k digital transfer at the time it was a new force a new restored 4K transfer and I think it would look amazing on 4K Ultra HD but as it stands this Blu-ray looks fantastic this comes in at 94 minutes from 1973 and just a fantastic film I think it I think this is the feature debut of Terence Malik so I'll just read the back of the case here Badlands announced the arrival of a major Talent Terrence Malik his impressionistic take on the on the notorious Charles Starkweather Killing Spree of the late 1950s uses a serial killer narrative as a springboard for an oblique teen romance lovingly an idio sing atically I love that word enacted by Martin Sheen and great film great release great picture highly recommended Badland spy number 651 in the Criterion Collection all right now we're going to come back to present day and a film that came out in 2021 so this is another sort of modern-day release if you like I've been on a bit of a Bergman kick I've been watching a lot of Bergman films in preparation for the coming Taste of ingar Bergman films coming out before the end of June and so really been enjoying that but this is a film on his Island Bergman Island uh from Mia Hansen love and this is not to be confused with the documentary Bergman Island which has Bergman in it this is actually a film about two filmmakers who go to Bergman island ingar bergman's island where he made a lot of his films and and basically it's a summertime Odyssey again another summertime you know related film this is a summertime Odyssey to the home of ingar Bergman for her seventh feature this is director Mia Hansen love you have uh Vicky KPS and Tim Roth uh they travel to the remote island of pharaoh Sweden where Bergman lived and worked for decades and they're trying to get their creative juices flowing so to speak it's a really nice film to check out if you like the film making process you like seeing writers and director and filmmakers sort of go through their go through their process of creating their art and how they think about coming up with stories uh and you like a nice romance this is a good film to check out spy number 1170 in the Criterion Collection it's based on a 2K digital Master it's 113 minutes it's from 2021 and this is a really really cool film it looks beautiful on this Blu-ray it's called Bergman Island and I really really enjoyed this film this is a really good movie folks IFC films really good movie one that might not be on your radar and one that you might not be thinking about but one you might want to consider adding to your cart as you're strolling through Barnes & Noble here in a few days Berwin Island all right now I've got so these are the single Edition releases that I have recommended to you here the single Edition releas is here I think a pretty nice nice collection here of course the worst person in the world lahan on 4K The Roaring twins on 4K felma and Louise on 4K Romeo and Juliet summertime starring the wonderful Katherine heurn got a couple of Summer Olympics uh single Edition titles to consider with visions of eight in Tokyo Olympiad The Passion of Jonah Arc amazing amazing film with those choice of three scores that you could listen to and whether you want to uh watch it on the 24 frames per second presentation or the 20 frames per second some nice viewing options to enjoy this classic film parasite bongju ho film amazing amazing stuff do the right thing for Spike Lee bad lands and of course Bergman Island from Mia Hansen love so those are some nice recommendations to consider adding to your collection let me know in the comments section below what do you think about these recommendations now I'm going to go to some box sets three box sets that I'm going to recommend you add to your collection these are three box sets all of which I have reviewed on this channel so definitely check those out on the playlist I have a playlist of over 130 Criterion Collection reviews including the reviews of these box sets I have reviewed many of these releases here as well so definitely check out the reviews of those titles um and then I'll put links in the description of these box set reviews that I've done but the first box set I'm going to talk about is a box set from the wonderful Italian director Federico felini and this is essential felini right here this is a wonderful wonderful set of a lot of his films it's called essential felini because it does not have all of his films but it has his essential ones so you know films like of course amacord Juliet of the spirits 8 and a half great film staring aello mastriani um and two of my favorites are of course Knights of Kabir and Lada uh starring the wonderful wonderful Julieta Masina uh just amazing amazing films that you ought to consider checking out in this wonderful set but this is a really nice set folks called a central felini that I highly recommend I have a review of this title on the channel so definitely check that out I'll leave a link in the description now there's a couple of other box sets that I have not pulled out I have them in my collection but I have not pulled them out but I have done reviews of those box sets as well now the second box set is the AAS vardas set wonderful set folks if you have not picked up the complete films of anas varda I highly highly recommend picking that one up that is a fantastic set from that director uh she was she was as Martin Square sey describes Ana varda is Art she is an EXT or she was an extraordinary extraordinary filmmaker and her box set is one of the most satisfying Journeys that you will experience going through a box set in all the Criterion Collection so if you want to get to know a filmmaker I never knew an varda in in her life of course I never knew her never met her but going through that box set makes you feel like you know Angus you know it makes you feel like you know who she is as a person and and and you really get an understanding and a greater appreciation for her contribution to the world of Cinema so that complete an vard set is is highly recommended from me so I have a review of that on the channel check out the link to that review in the description here as well and then the third box set that I'll recommend is a box set from a director that I just absolutely love Wong carw I did an unboxing of that box set so definitely check out that video on this channel I'll put a link to that as well as a link to the review of the world of Wan Caray set it's a beautiful presentation of a box set and it's just absolutely phenomenal the films in it are amazing including In the Mood for Love just absolutely phenomenal films from En chunking Express and other films from that amazing director Wong carwise so essential felini anas vard Wan car three amazing box sets of amazing films from amazing directors great opportunities to explore filmmakers
