hi guys I'm Andy welcome back to backpacking UK the YouTube channel it's all about hiking backpacking and well camping right today I'll be doing a full backpacking gear load out of all the backpacking kit that I took with me to complete the west highland way so it was a 100 miles over 5 days now all this including 1 liter of water and all my breakfasts and all my main meals weighed 15 kilos so everything that I go through with you today going to list in the description I'm going to put all the links in there all the weights so if you want to build this pack up or something similar you can the temperature forecast was early minuses during the night and Mild during the day so that's what I packed for so let's get cracking so for starters I took the Osprey ether 60 L backpack this this is the one with the ospray anti-gravity back system it's just almost like a bit like a suspension system for your backpack it's really really comfy really thick shoulder straps really thick hip belt it performed absolutely flawlessly now on the shoulder straps I've got these gossamer gear sort of shoulder strap Pockets these are quite Gucci ones to be honest they're about 30 each however I also put a link in the description to the OM ones which are about half the price and a lot lighter too so in these little shoulder packet Pockets I had a Garmin inreach messenger which is a satellite communication device it's got an SOS button but what I really used it for is I could text the other half when I'm a way keeps her happy she knows I'm safe it's about 200 it's really really good bit of Kit get weather forecasts with that as well and also tracking in the other little pocket on the front I've just got my little Skull Candy wireless earphones which I didn't actually use to be honest so I just listening to the sounds of nature which is really really nice so in one of the shoulder straps of got my right in the rain pad and pencil so I was writing notes as I was going along it's actually really nice to do um just lots of ideas coming in my head all my lessons learned which I'll do a video about that soon they're all in here right in the rain basically like a waterproof pad it's really nice thing to do actually when you're going away making a like a little Diary of your adventures on the other side now this is where I've got like my cables and my battery pack this is a really really quite expensive uh night core uh Power Pack I'll put the uh links in the description for this and also anchor ones which are a lot lot cheaper so I had all my cables in here and the idea was when I was stopping I could quickly whip it out get it chared chared up as much as I could in the time that I had so that was the front the other thing I took was my om chest rig so in here I had my Harvey Maps West Highland Way map which is actually superb this is actually really tough and it's kind of waterproof as well um so I'd highly recommend Harvey maps for your adventures so in here obviously I'm a content creator so I had I was wearing my Garin epics Gen 2 watch um but in here I had some repellent which I didn't need there was no midies And as far as I'm aware there was no ticks while I was out and about in here I had an exped waterproof pouch and this housed things like uh my microphones spet microphones uh a light selfie stick um adapters and things like that everything you need to be a content creator was in that but those chest rigs are absolutely great if I bought some snacks they went straight in there as well same with my sunglasses too so on the front of the pack I took a 750 mil bottle so I could just whip that out and fill that up at w stations wherever I could on the other side had my B free catter in water filter which is a really fast flowing water filter that was absolutely superb I had two foldable water bottles Got a Pea bag for during the night one thing I've learned over the years is if you need a p during the night just go you're going to sleep if you don't it's just going to play on your mind so that's what I had in the front pockets there now in one of the hip Pockets I had again a waterproof exped little pocket you can actually use little lunch bags rather than these these really really expensive just go down tesos get some little lunch bags are great this had like my valuables in it on the other side I had things like um some paracet wiber profen shower gel a lip thingy which I only got the last minute if you watch my videos I had really bad chapped lips um I also had for day one because I car uh completed about 30 miles on day one um I also had um some Torx sort of energy powder and a protein powder because I did about 30 miles and a knew I needed something extra on day one as well had some energy bars to get me through that as well so they were in that Hip Pocket so on the front of the bag I have my dry bag which I used as a rubbish bag use a dry bag don't do what I've done a couple of times accidentally not taking a dry bag and then it leak which is not great you don't want food and drink leaking into your backpack that's a absolute nightmare also got a great good luck charm on there too so in the lid of the backpack what I've got in here is a waterproof cover which fortunately I didn't need but I've also had my Canister Stand and my little piso igniter and also my tiny weny this performed brilliantly this dead my little daflon four class camping stove so had that in the top pocket and the pocket underneath add my sort of Shades and Lead my shade spent most of their time actually on my head because it was so hot now one thing I would suggest is having two plug sockets so if you stop anywhere you can use one to charge your phone and the other one to charge your power pack so little hint there take two not one in here I also had my head torch had my TR and I did have some tissues with that my little Flex tail gear zero pump for my sleeping pad got a hat I've got a neck thingy extremities and also extremities gloves um these waterproof as well which are absolutely superb so that was everything that I had in the lid now going into the main compartment had an o t towel um which I used lot it just meant it was easy to access they really fast trying those towels so I found a little stream I could have a little wash with my little shower gel um always keep these towards the top of your bag or even better on the outside of your bag little Nano life systems first aid kit weighs I think somewhere about 100 gram but there's loads of first aid kit in here even if you don't use it yourself it's worth taking one because you can help other people out on the way the only thing I added was comped which I didn't need I've got a little C to Summit Evac bags these are dry bags but they actually let air out so you can compress them lots and lots and lots this is like a little three later one which housed my through dark I Rax jacket which is absolutely lovely sin it's a synthetic down jacket great down to about 0° and being synthetic if it gets wet it actually still keeps you warm now I had a very light set of waterproofs these are innovate ones so they're highly breathable but they're still waterproof as well they're also great wind blockers as well so I think on day four I spent most of the day actually wearing that packed down really small don't weigh anything at all so in one of the bags now you can just get a simple um liner bag either an ospray one or you can get ones for about £4 which I put a link in the description H just saves you have in lots and lots of little bags but I'm super super organized so I like to have little bags for all the sorts of gear that I've got but in here this had Clos in so I had like a thick sort of base layer slash fleece top this was a through dark Siege one um really really warm that is I had different pairs of socks so I tend to use Darn Tough socks um they're just unbelievable they're Marino wall socks but they're have just the highest quality and these are guaranteed for life they're top end pair of socks and then I had My OBX bamboo base layers now they're okay they're really really comfy um they're really good at regulating your temperature as well however I was waking up when it was getting to like - 2us 3 in the morning maybe I should have taken my Marino wo ones but that's just the lessons learned so I took my brand new for 2024 my MSR titanium Titan little camping sort of cook set which is superb I took a 230 G canister so that all housed really really nicely in there this is a superb bit of kit it's about 50 60 quid but that's all you ever need if you're just boiling water it's absolutely great so we've got a little bag here with like my toiletries like an eye mask deodrant I've got my lanters in there toothpaste my toothbrush we talk about that another day but it's on my Spork um air plugs um iprof and gel so that was my like toiletries bag I've also got my new for 2024 this was my daflon mt900 insulated s sleeping pad this has got an R rating of 5.4 but as you can see it's a really really small package that was really good really comfy slept well now this was my food pouch so this had all my breakfast and all my main meals also had my coffee and my milks in there so I'll just show you what I took now so this is the food that I've bought with me I've got a few fireport meals boo pasta spicy por noodles chili con car also had my chicken te Masala already I've got some Nest Cafe premixed lattes got some coffee bags with some milks then I've got my T meal breakfasts blueberry burst breakfast super seed and red berry I've just had my chocolate porridge and subtly cinnamon breakfast as well also got some temp meal main meals as well Moroccan cuscus and a Thai green curry so this is going to set me up for the week last till Friday of just getting main meals for lunch so next up I've got my om insulated bottoms as you can see really tiny package I'll do a review on these soon because it is one of the best pieces of backpacking gear that I own now at the end of the day it's just so so nice putting on something that's warm and comfy and these are just absolutely superb highly highly recommend them they're expensive but they're superb now the tent that I took now one thing when I wanted to do this I didn't want to go ultra light I didn't want to create a two three G package that 90% of people couldn't achieve wanted to put a package together the 15 Kil I think most people on most budgets could afford that now I took the world country Helm one why because it weighs 2 kilos which is all right it's actually really quite compact which was really important for me when you're taking a lot of stuff but one thing that I don't think people fully realize with these tents is all the Fabric's really thick it's freestanding tent I can pitch this anywhere and I did if I took a trekking pole tent I wouldn't have been able to pitch in places that I pitch this tent and this performed fantastically well so world country Helm one and then in the bottom I've got another dry bag here with some of my clothes so I took some shorts which I actually used quite a lot um some bamboo box of shorts also took some pants my mates got me into pants for hiking and it has been an absolute Game Changer so much more comfy now I took normal T-shirts because it was supposed to get to about 15° so uh innovate one uh the classic Moun equipment one the one where I nearly got shot um and also uh just a sort of loyal and Scot one there then I had a through dark one obviously I'm a content creator you wouldn't usually take this amount of t-shirts and my Mountain Equipment IEX Pro trousers the ones with the big slits so you can regulate your temperature if it gets hot now for boots at the brand new for 2024 these new Salamon X Ultra free 60s couple of mistakes that I made I had no idea it was going to get as hot as it did I got absolutely frazzled I would have taken some much lighter weight t-shirts with me if I'd known some lighter weight socks and I was advised to go up half a size when I got these I had no idea how difficult the terrain is on the west highland way it's it's so so Stony and my feet swelled up a lot so feet swelled up from the constant treading on stones and rocks plus the heat I should have listened to them should have gone half a size up now the last things my daflon 4 class pillow it's 15 quid I prefer this to expensive pillows it's really really good I've got my little nature hike down booties now I'm going synthetic uh from now on they always get wet so the insulation that they provide to be honest half of it lost with it getting wet these are the waterproof bottoms like I say tiny tiny tiny little pack size that's like a small apple um but they're just so so good to have you know if it if it does rain you can whip them on fully waterproof fully breathable superb set of Kit now I've got my Flex tail gear zero seat which is again weighs nothing tiny little pack size cracken sit pad and on the front of the pack at the bottom I've got a dry bag bag with my Sierra Designs Cloud 20 zius sleeping bag but this is all the kit that I took with me on the west highland way I pretty much used all of it um and I don't think I would have changed anything that I took other than some sort of lighter t-shirts and going up half a size with my hiking boots but all this performed just superbly I've really really chuffed with all this kit so like I say I'm going to put all the links and the weights in the description so if you got any questions on any of this kit just feel free to ask but please check out my West Highland Way videos they really are genuinely good um gives you a really really good insight into the just what the experience is about and the types of scenery you're likely to see there so please check out those videos hope to see you well camping soon cheers
