[Music] foreign the steam deck after having used the Rog Ally for a bit now so I can talk about why I actually right now am kind of leaning towards the steam deck being the better product overall and now the Rog Ally and the steam deck do seem like direct competitors and from a marketing standpoint they they are but the use of them is more like comparing a PC to a console this is the fourth console this competes directly with the switch the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox series and that's because of the first thing that I want to talk about which is the user experience overall this because it's not running Windows it's running Steam OS uh it makes a actually a very big difference especially now after over a year of updates and maintenance to Steam OS when you launch a game on this it launches like on a console you hit play and it just pops up and goes when you're launching a game on the rgli it doesn't always work right sometimes it needs weird updates and it launches like it does on a PC if you've done PC gaming you know what I'm saying and you probably think that's not a big deal but for somebody who's expecting a console experience or is used to a console experience it makes a big difference now of course you have the steam store and you can launch Big Picture Mode on the Rog Ally but because it's running Windows you you lose a lot with that having native Steam OS running on a Linux you know based system it just works works a lot better you get a lot better battery life which I'll talk about that in a sec too but this is your console adjacent experience and it's noticeable steam was really probably the only company in the world that has a footing to go into making a new console right now right they already have the game store that's what you need you see other people kind of failing at making their own you know service offerings you have Amazon Luna Google studio which already canceled and died um struggling to get into the gaming Market it's hard you need to have the games if anything is proven that it's a Nintendo switch if you have the games the hardware doesn't even really matter that much your game selection is everything to becoming a new console or a new competing service in the market steam has that a massive game library and then they've also gone through and told you which ones in the steam game Library are compatible with deck and it's a lot of them in a constantly growing number so there's tons of native games for the steam deck console that work now anything that's compatible with steam deck pretty much is going to work on your rgli but you're not going to get that clean user experience necessarily um and something I already mentioned which that's kind of leading to my second topic I want to talk about which is battery life it's a big difference a huge difference on the Rog Ally it's terrible battery life right whether you're playing a game or not it's not good I think it's because it's running Windows and if you go on each tweak a bunch of settings perhaps your RG Ally battery life gets better but on the steam deck it is just a lot better out of the box it you're gonna get a much longer battery life now they have the same battery capacity I believe it's 40 watt hours on this deck and on the Ally but this one does a much better job of optimizing for that battery life it's not running Windows it's running Steam OS so all it cares about is saving as much battery for your games as it possibly can and when you combine the the Steam OS with the you know the battery life optimization uh there are some quality of life things that the deck does that I think are necessary for a good mobile gaming experience uh the big one quick resume you hit the button wherever you were it's going to pull up your game where you were even if it's Days Later game is still up you can just keep playing just like on the switch that experience is not the same on the Ally because it's running Windows 11 it'll go to sleep you have to wake it up if you have any kind of security on you have to sign back in um and it's just hinky multiple times on the Ally I would try to Quick resume after a couple hours of not using it and I would probably have to restart the game or something like that it was very annoying again it doesn't really stop you from playing your games but those types of quality of life things are what separate you know a mass Market product from a niche uh Enthusiast Market product and it's those Mass market products that do well right that go on that get a second generation that get the best hardware that hit the the scale of sales they need to reduce price and still have a good product right the deck very much appeals more to a mass Market if only you could buy it on shelves in stores I think that'd make a big difference like you know with the Rog Ally it's at Best Buy that was a really smart move on their part I would love to see the deck in more stores we do need to talk about performance um the Rog Li without question has a better performance metric than the deck it has won a 1080p screen instead of 720p 120 hertz display instead of 60 hertz with some software optimization actually the decks display if you're okay with 60 hertz it doesn't feel nearly as laggy as it did at least to me on you know launch day but all that being said the ili will be more performant it has better performance it's going to eat through your battery faster um and the Ally will be quieter and cooler overall I mean the deck gets hot the Ally gets hot but the deck gets pretty loud those fans start going and yeah yeah kinda it almost makes you uneasy it makes me uneasy when the fans get going on a mobile device it's like oh shoot I shouldn't be playing what I'm playing right now um you know keep doing that and the fans will keep cooling it down and you can play your you know Spider-Man or whatever game you're playing and it's kind of fine but uh I definitely felt a little better about it when it happened on the Ally but we do need to talk now about value all right I just bought a new deck on the steam sale for 10 off of the lowest model so this was a little over 350 brand new from valve it came with uh you know of course a charger but it also came with a case that's a great value Right double that to get the Ally you're getting a worse experience with the Ally overall you're paying twice as much you're kind of getting more performance but with all the other factors I've mentioned I do think the deck is a significantly better value picking up for 350 on the Steam Sale was a no-brainer um and because this is 2023 and this is a new deck I got to see what the experience would be like for a person buying a deck today and it's way better than it was launch day when you get a new steam deck today when I will do a software update still when it gets to you but it does it right away there's no weird part logging in there's no real glitches when you first open up and boot the deck up and it's smooth it's like a brand new console it feels like a polished finished product from a software perspective it does the One update and then you're good big difference huge difference I I am much happier with my deck today than I was when it first came out uh I gotta recommend it to anybody who's considering getting a steam deck um or an ally the steam deck I think is still the right call right now um steam deck 2 might come out at some point right and if you keep buying all your games on Steam and that's how you're doing your game collections or whatever you're doing then you get the two and then you'll have an even better Hardware experience hopefully um you know there's rumors of a two coming out at some point I think 2025 right so we're going to be waiting a while um there's definitely not any fear of buying a steam deck today and then one coming out tomorrow I think right now we're pretty far out from the Next Generation and I think the Ally and the steam deck are going to be the what generation they are right now I think that's going to be the market for a while so um yeah I think if you're looking at getting a steam deck or an ally I I would get the steam deck just for some of those quality of life improvements that I mentioned unless you plan to play this fully docked right um you know if you're kind of batting around like oh I kind of want a gaming laptop but I you know very rarely will take it on the go it's gonna sit at home most of the time maybe the Ally is better for you but I really like this that's all thanks for watching yeehaw
