hello guys and welcome back to another video so you guys have been asking me for it and today i thought i would do another monologue for you so without any further ado let's jump straight in as you can see here we have the monologue and it is about eating habits and experiences the instructions state that you have to choose two or more ideas to talk about and of course you may add your own ideas and the time limit we're looking for is around three and a half to four minutes let's have a look at how i would tackle this monologue and then afterwards we will look at some language that i used in a bit more detail hello my name is ben and today i'm going to discuss the topic of eating habits i've decided to focus on two areas today specifically i would like to talk about my opinion on how the rise of fast food culture has had a detrimental effect on our society and their eating habits to add to that i'm going to focus on healthy eating and how i believe more should be done to educate people when it comes to the benefits of cooking their own meals and why health should be prioritized over saving time secondly i'm going to touch on the topic of genetically modified food versus organic food looking in a bit more detail at the advantages and disadvantages of both people often say you are what you eat and i believe this is true when it comes to fast food versus healthy food now it is well known that although fast food is convenient it's not nearly as nourishing as healthy food as humans we're not designed to eat food that's crammed with saturated fats such as hamburgers or pizza if you throw in unwanted nutrients such as salt and other additives on top of that it really turns into a recipe for disaster you also have to take into consideration the fact that frying food also sucks out most of the nutrients that could be present otherwise now i know nipping out for a big mac might seem like a tempting and easier option saving you time but the fact is that there's always a healthier alternative that can be achieved in the comfort of your own home and this leads me nicely onto my next point for fast food versus healthy food what it really boils down to for me is education it's like the old saying give a man a fish and you'll feed him for a day teach a man to fish and you fed him for a lifetime from my point of view governments and parents have a huge responsibility to teach young people how to cook healthy meals from a young age that help fuel the body with the proper nutrients it needs when it comes to talking about food in general a hot debate is that of genetically modified food versus organic food a key advantage of genetically modified food is that it is evidently cheaper to mass produce when compared to organic food this in turn has the potential to overcome a number of troubling issues such as famine in parts of the world where food is scarce however no one can deny that genetically modified food is still in its infancy so any potential side effects surrounding the chemicals used are still being discovered and who knows this could lead to health problems for generations to come on the other hand we have organic food organic food is known to have less pesticides and fewer things such as growth promoters and that kind of thing in addition to that organic farming is often better for the environment and the surrounding wildlife with fewer pesticides benefiting not only humans living near the farms but also animals as well what's more organic food is a lot of the time fresher than genetically modified food as fewer chemicals are used to preserve it in conclusion i strongly believe that it's up to each and every individual to make a decision when deciding what food goes in our bodies my only fear is that without proper education will end up being a generation of obese and unwell individuals who don't know how to cook and don't know what is in their food this combination could be really problematic if nothing is done to educate and inform people of the risks thank you very much so there we have the monologue guys and i hope you enjoyed it what i want to do now is i'm going to talk through some tips and some advice that i would like to give you if you are doing a monologue or you have a monologue coming up in the next few months so first of all it is crucial to plan it's really important that in the planning stage of the monologue you use your time effectively so what i would suggest is i would suggest sticking with a good old spider diagram and then using that spider diagram you can branch off it and go into more detail about the points that you're going to talk about and the other thing is you're not going to be looking down if you could imagine i'm talking to the examiner you are the examiner because after all it's a monologue so you want to be sure that you are looking at the examiner and giving them lots of eye contact because if i'm constantly looking down like this at my plan then it's obvious that it's not natural and it doesn't feel natural and the examiner will pick up on that my next quick tip is to stick to the time limits now this one is again super important but i've had students in the past who over talk and overthink and this is just as bad as not having enough to say so be sure to stick to the time limits you get between three and a half to four minutes in some cases you get between three and three and a half minutes be sure to stick to the time limits because if you don't it is an automatic fail and this leads me on to my last piece of advice which is to use a variety of language now the guidelines surrounding the monologue are actually quite complicated to understand there's no real specific language that they ask you to use with this in mind i've come up with my own sort of list that i would use and i would encourage you to try and get as many of these language points in your monologues as possible so first of all we have phrasal verbs try and use a variety of different phrasal verbs and really impress the examiner secondly we have idioms and if it's suitable and you feel confident you might be able to use maybe one or two idioms in your monologue next i would use connectors now connectors are brilliant because they help you structure and link together your points in a fluid manner first of all you want to use connectors of time such as when while as soon as also you want to be sure to use connectors of sequence and these are things such as firstly secondly in addition what's more and also if you are talking about your opinion perhaps you want to use connectors of contrast such as although however whereas and this leads me really nicely to my next point because what we're going to do now is we are going to look at my monologue that i gave you guys and i'm going to pause the monologue and we're going to look at some of the language in a bit more detail so as promised guys now we're going to look at my monologue in a little bit more detail and study some of the language that i used hopefully this will give you a good idea of some of the language that you should be using and help you in the future hello my name is ben and today i'm going to discuss the topic of eating habits i've decided to focus on two areas today specifically i would like to talk about my opinion on how the rise of fast food culture has had a detrimental effect on our society and their eating habits to add to that i'm going to focus on healthy eating and how i believe more should be done to educate people when it comes to the benefits of cooking their own meals and why health should be prioritized over saving time so i'm going to pause the video there and the first thing that i want to talk about is structure so as you can see here i've clearly identified in the introduction the points that i'm going to talk about also i want to point out some of the language so let's go back and have a look at this connector that i used so i use the expression to add to that now this is a really good alternative to the phrase um in addition or furthermore and it's just a little bit more colloquial also notice that i used phrases such as i'm going to focus on this again is very important because you want to have a variety of different phrases instead of saying just i'm going to talk about or i'm going to discuss perhaps you want to have three to four to five expressions that you can use so that you don't end up repeating yourself in the monologue a lot of times let's continue secondly i'm going to touch on the topic of genetically modified food versus organic food looking in a bit more detail at the advantages and disadvantages of both see again there we had a connector of time so i said secondly so this is very important as well people often say you are what you eat and i believe this is true when it comes to fast food versus healthy food again something that's very important that i notice a lot try and avoid i think okay try and use phrases such as i believe from my point of view in my opinion and this again shows that you have a good knowledge of english and you are confident using a variety of different phrases and expressions now it is well known that although fast food is convenient it's not nearly as nourishing as healthy food as humans we're not designed to eat food that's crammed with saturated fats such as so i'm going to stop here again this verb crammed now crammed is just another way to say full of if something is crammed with something it simply means it is full of something for example burgers are crammed with saturated fats burgers or pizza if you throw in unwanted nutrients to throw in something this means to add to add something such as salt and other additives on top of that it really turns into a recipe for disaster you also have to take into consideration that to take into consideration means you have to um make allowances for or consider something in other words give it some thought the fact that frying food also sucks out most of the nutrients that could be present otherwise now i know nipping out for a big mac might seem like a tempting and easier option to nip out means to go out quickly so if i nip out to the shops it means that i'm going out but i don't intend to stay out for very long saving you time but the fact is that there's always a healthier alternative that can be achieved in the comfort of your own home and this leads me nicely onto my next point let me just stop there so did you see the phrase that i used this leads me nicely onto my next point and this is something that you can use in your monologue that will really nicely tie your paragraphs and tie your thoughts and your points together for fast food versus healthy food what it really boils down to for me is education it's like the old saying give a man a fish and you'll feed him for a day teach a man to fish and you fed him for a lifetime so a couple of really nice points here we've got the phrase what it boils down to and this means the main factor or the most important point for me is this so in this case i say what it boils down to for me is education in other words what i feel is the most important the crucial point or the crucial factor in all of this is education and also i've used an expression which helps me clarify or helps me get across the point that i'm trying to make from my point of view governments and parents have a huge responsibility to teach young people how to cook healthy meals from a young age that help fuel the body with the proper nutrients it needs when it comes to talking about food in general a hot debate is that of genetically modified food versus organic food a key advantage of genetically modified food is that it is evidently cheaper to mass produce when compared to organic food this in turn has the potential to overcome a number of troubling issues such as famine in parts of the world where food is scarce however no one can deny that genetically modified food is still in its infancy so any potential side effects surrounding the chemicals used are still being discovered and who knows this could lead to health problems for generations to come on the other hand we have organic food there we go another connector that's very nice on the other hand so we've talked about the advantages and the disadvantages of a genetically modified food and this ties us in very nicely this leads us to the next point really nicely on the other hand so we have that contrast no organic food is known to have less pesticides and fewer things such as growth promoters and that kind of thing in addition to that organic farming is often better for the environment in addition to that there we go another another way that i've linked the points together very nicely and the surrounding wildlife with fewer pesticides benefiting not only humans living near the farms but also animals as well what's more organic food is a lot of the time fresher than genetically modified food as fewer chemicals are used to preserve it not only but also again this is a structure that's really really good to use in the monologues and it will show the examiner that you understand certain expressions and how to use certain expressions if you want to learn more about not only but also check out my other video i'll put a link either here or here and you can learn a bit more about this expression and how to use it in conclusion i strongly believe that it's up to each and every individual to make a decision when deciding what food goes in our bodies and again here we link nicely into the conclusion so we know the structure the examiner can see that you've clearly thought about the structure and you understand my only fear is that without proper education will end up being a generation of obese and unwell individuals who don't know how to cook and don't know what is in their food this combination could be really problematic if nothing is done to educate and inform people of the risks thank you very much so there we are guys and i hope you enjoyed the video and you enjoyed looking and understanding in a bit more detail some of the language that i used if you would like to see more videos please let me know down in the comment section below and if i missed anything or you want me to go over any of the language please leave me a comment and i'll be happy to answer it for you once again thank you for watching and i will see you next time
