storyboarding is a hard job there's a lot to keep track of when I first started storyboarding I made a lot of little mistakes so here are five tips that I've learned throughout the past six years that I've personally made storyboarding infinitely easier for me and hopefully it'll help you too tip one lower the horizon line while there's a time and place for every type of shot I see way too many artists doing this weird three-quarter down shot or putting the horizon line right in the middle you should typically want to lower it to the bottom third of the screen this will increase the clarity of the acting help you lead your eye to the action and overall make your shots feel way more cinematic tip number two and this one I still sometimes do it's giving your audience more Breathing Room widen your shots so many times I see these awkwardly tight shots that don't give your audience any breathing room this is a really common thing that most people don't even notice they're doing it's a good rule of thumb to just go 20 wider on almost all your shots when you first start out tip number three motivate your Cuts don't just cut randomly in the middle of the scene without prompting it first with some kind of action or reaction see how jarring an unmotivated cut can be she just kind of stands up and there's no real reason for us to cut the new shot obviously sometimes there are reasons to do this but in general try cutting on actions reactions sounds just anything to prompt the cut see how I just cut in the middle of her getting out of her seat and it feels much more natural it leads the camera tip number four using the foreground and background to lead the audience's eye to the action always be mindful to design the layout to lead the eye don't just randomly Place elements around the scene choose the angle of the trees the foreground objects the clouds everything can help you with the intention of a scene see how I have a bunch of straight trees in the background that don't help us at all and see what happens when I replace it with all these kind of angular trees that help us lead the eye right to the action and it'll be way more useful than just putting a random generic force in the background and tip number five don't overly render your panels simple gestural drawings with two to three tonal layers are more than enough to convey what you need to boards are meant to be disposable used to convey only the story that you want to tell and not the final product here is an example of a pretty complex scene with a pretty specific moon this is about the upper limit I would take a storyboard pen you don't need 20 layers of tone highlights Bloom 40 gradients don't be too precious when storyboarding spending hours cleaning your panels is not a good use of your time by now this panel is more like an illustration and has taken me way too long to board a whole sequence at this level hope that could be helpful let me know in the comments what else you'd like to see and don't forget to like And subscribe if you liked it bye [Music]
