when the world's most famous pilot fails to return from a routine flight it seems inexplicable for no clues there was nothing it's almost like he had disappeared Into Thin Air but when the hunt for his plane reveals a horrific Secret sends shock waves around the world the amount of aircraft that have gone down in this area is a huge number this area is extremely dangerous a deadly force lurking in the Sierra Nevada mountains as claimed countless lives at that point they were starting to call it a curse it can sneak up on you I mean it can tear the Wings off an aircraft dubbed the Nevada triangle experts dive into the case files to uncover a mysterious killer dead men tell no Tales it could be described as by hand pushing the airplane down they slammed in push there this is the story of how the hunt for the world's most famous pilot cast light on one of the flying world's most astonishing Mysteries foreign [Music] [Music] a.m Monday 3rd of September 2007. a single-engine stunt plane is prepared for takeoff from the flying M Ranch a private Airfield in Western Nevada flying the aircraft is world famous pilot Explorer and multi-millionaire Steve Fawcett he's a man who's broken scores of Aviation records in many types of aircraft Steve Fawcett is one of the icons in aviation he was a person who didn't accept limitations he set himself out to expand the knowledge of Aviation to circumnavigate the globe non-stop by yourself there hadn't been an airplane designed to do that and so he found a way to do it Steve Fawcett found solutions to previously unsolvable problems today he's flying a Bellanca super decathlon it's a lightweight aerobatic plane perfect for a Sunday morning diversion no one knows really what his plans were for his flight just relaxing enjoying aviating but the world famous pilot never returns sometimes it can be hours and days before people realize that airplanes are missing in this case it was extremely fast faucet when Steve fossa didn't return by about 10 30 11 o'clock that's when people started to worry then by 11 30 that's when they called out a search and I think the search began in full around noon that day it's like um Ranch quick start is crucial if he has crashed and is alive the conditions in the mountain region are punishing without water Steve Fawcett only has Days to Live his physical condition is going to be degraded significantly if you don't find a Survivor within a few days then they're not a survivor anymore the first question is where was he heading that morning they check with the Airfield to see if faucet launched a flight plan bad news after I got nothing I have no idea where he was heading but there are grounds for optimism faucets aircraft is equipped with an emergency locator transmitter the transmitter triggers in a crash giving search and rescue a precise location they were hoping for that signal they were checking hourly as their signal there's got to be a signal no we still have no elt and in the first week everyone was very hopeful like he could still be found alive they keep sweeping the area hoping the transmitter triggers a signal the investigators would have been very very concerned and frustrated not having a route to start looking in the end they were trying to say what's the highest likelihood of where he was when in fact there was no data to support it one way or the other the whereabouts of one of the world's greatest living aviators is a total mystery Mark rosenker is the former chairman of the national Transportation safety board there were no clues there were no remains there were no fires there were there was nothing and it's almost like he had disappeared Into Thin Air Nevada and California launched the largest ever peacetime search and rescue mission in U.S history with little information they rely on a process of elimination pull everybody that's going to be involved in the investigation together and you start canvassing for ideas we know that the airplane can't be any further than x number of miles from where it took off then you begin to shrink that Circle of possibility did Steve Fawcett drop any clues before he left when he departed did he say if he was going toward the mountains away from the mountains was it just a sightseeing flight all of those questions you then begin to have to answer to increase the probability of a given area of search you're talking about thousands of square miles the search area covered much of Northern Nevada and over into California and the Sierra it's like finding a needle in a haystack and then on top of it this Haystack is rugged mountainous terrain against all the odds the team seemed to make a breakthrough [Music] they spot the wreckage of a plane nestling within the folds of the mountainous Terrain they saw something that looked like a plane that looked like a wreck for a moment they must have been very excited hoping that they've now found the wreckage and maybe got there in time to help but as the rescue team approach they realize that it's not fuss it's plane the disappointment soon turns to confusion another team finds a wreck then another within days they discover eight crashed planes but not one of them is the super decathlon faucet was flying that day sheer number of unreported wrecks takes them all by surprise they were kind of shocked they didn't know there were that many out there and there are that many there's tons when they check the missing plane files they discover in the triangle between Las Vegas Reno and Fresno a total of 2 000 planes never returned the amount of aircraft that have gone down in this area is is a huge number this area has received a reputation of being extremely dangerous with harsh desert Plains to the East and the treacherous High Sierra Nevada mountains to the West this area has claimed 100 times more aircraft than the notorious Bermuda Triangle a fact that led locals to dubbit the Nevada triangle it seems Steve Fawcett's disappearance is the tip of a chilling Iceberg and the only people who can explain the mystery have perished dead men tell no Tales so it's not like these people that died flying can Circle back and tell people how dangerous it is the idea that an aircraft can simply disappear is a very hard thing to take in we don't like Mysteries so how can you fly over a mountain and not see it having already down thousands of Pilots Steve Fawcett becomes the Nevada triangle's most celebrated victim after a month-long intensive search the rescue teams admit defeat call the mission off everyone was disheartened because you feel like there's no hope thought well he may never be found yet there was still the thought of he could be somewhere out there just because the search area was so large it's a full year before a hiker in the Sierra Nevada mountains finds a wallet containing a large sum of money I did not recognize the name at first it didn't it didn't click I was tired I was in a hurry but the next morning me and a few friends put it all together and we come to the conclusion it was The Missing pilot I heard the wallet was found and they found the thousand dollars I did think that it was probably Steve Fawcett because I just knew his habits were to carry a few thousand dollars at a time the wallet belongs to faucet The Aviator can't be far away the recovery team act quickly we went as early as we possibly could we were picked up by an army Blackhawk helicopter and we were then transported to a plateau on the mountain this was the the go team Mark rosenka remembers the challenge we had to hike down about 300 feet to the actual uh accident site and I will never forget it the lack of oxygen up there the difficulty in managing the terrain hidden 10 000 feet up the side of the Sierra Nevadas they find the elusive super decathlon when the wreck was finally found it was understandable why you couldn't see it from a fixed-wing airplane it was so destroyed and and shredded in the accident you'd have to be right on top of it the experts pull her over the wreckage looking for answers the world's press were eager to know what happened to the greatest living Airmen but for investigators the stakes are even higher could Fawcett's fate shed light on the bigger mystery why the Sierra Nevada has claimed so many aircraft but if the mountains are hiding a secret they aren't going to give it up easily we had to do a lot of the work very quickly because a winter storm was coming and we were concerned that when it snowed it was going to cover up all of the evidence and we were not going to be able to bring everything that we needed back down the wreck is airlifted off the mountain investigators begin deconstructing Fawcett's crash from the day he went missing it was assumed that mechanical failure was the most likely cause of the tragedy when new weather was pilot error or mechanical error but one would think more mechanical error this is a highly skilled Aviator that is used to dealing with high pressure environments I think a pilot of his skill level controlling the airplane would almost be second nature in the hands of the experts the shattered plane can be read like a book the engine itself had been thrown I'd say maybe 400 feet from the point of impact [Music] surmise how quick how fast the aircraft was moving at at the point of impact we looked of course always at maintenance issues we look at failure of the equipment they'll maybe tear down the engine itself to see if there was any type of potential mechanical failure to their surprise investigators discover that the engine was in perfect working order and it crashed with a near full tank of fuel so what caused the crash is there something about the mountains themselves that his forcing planes out of the Skies ranking high in the history of the Nevada triangle is another case where experienced Pilots succumbed to this stretch of mountains decades earlier an Infamous tragedy saw not one but six experienced Pilots disappear along with 32 passengers all within the space of days and the sight sits just north of Fawcett's wreck a group of Californian couples gamble in the casinos of Hawthorne Nevada they're taking advantage of the state's relaxed gambling laws Hawthorne was was hopping a lot of activity that casino was the hot spot in the center of the town the bar was four to five people deep ordering drinks it was loud and uh it was definitely always a good time [Music] earlier that evening the group had flown in on a return shuttle flight from Los Angeles to Hawthorne a very small amount of money people were able to enjoy an evening of gambling eating drinking and then flying back that night there was 11 married couples and then there was a wedding party of four that night and then there was a group of gals that were about having fun you know [Music] in the early hours they're rounded up for the return flight to LA the stirred his Patty would have went into the casino at about 3 15 and 3 30. gathered all her passengers up it would have been cold and a little bit wet that morning so they would have been chilly and bundled up and probably moved quickly to get on the bus and get to the airport [Music] the pilot and co-pilot would have started pre-fight and I'm sure had the aircraft running when Patty arrived with passengers and they would have boarded you know it was cold out and they want to get going [Music] stewardess's primary job was taking care of her passengers on the plane safely getting them buckled in have a pleasant flight Patty would have pulled the doors shut and latched it taken her seat and they would have taxied out onto the runway with the full power [Music] and they would have faded off into the Western Horizon the aircraft flying what is known as the gamble is special is McDonnell Douglas DC3 the people on the airplane on the return leg would be exhausted tired trying to sleep as the pilot approaches the Sierra Nevadas he is aware of a strong winter storm on the horizon [Music] it's at night the storm is already arriving the mountains are obscured the slightest error in navigation and you're in deep trouble the pilot was trying to run ahead of the storm but the storm overtook him the airplane was being thrown around people would have been white not going on the seats I doubt the flight attendant was able to move up and down the aisle they could hear the engines gunning the pilot and co-pilot had their hands full I would I'd say in my mind sheer Terror the gamble is special with 35 people on board never arrives when there was no radio contact made with the Gambler special when it did not arrive at Burbank Bob Hope Airport as expected they knew there was a problem Burbank Airport notifies the Civil Air Patrol but with no radio contact and no distress call potential search area is massive huge response team mobilizes decades before Fawcett's disappearance this is one of the Region's biggest ever search and rescue efforts [Applause] there was over 1 000 ground personnel between the agencies that were looking for this Civil Air Patrol Navy and Air Force thousands and thousands of square miles hoping to narrow the search area the investigators plot the missing planes intended flight route the Civil Air Patrol always wants to take the positive side let's hope that there could be survivors you always want to be optimistic and you want to pursue that search as diligently as possible because in those conditions based on temperature Etc the clock is running now this monster storm had enveloped the High Sierra and had moved into Nevada as well the rescue team launched such planes to scour the area for the missing DC3 storm claims another victim this time one of the specialist rescue planes a Civil Air Patrol plane crashed hyama in the mountains they sustained serious injuries but after a number of days they were rescued and all did recover other search and rescue planes weren't so lucky jet with two men took off from Lamour Naval Air Station in California and they went looking for The Gambler special but in doing so they crashed and they were killed [Music] the Navy then launched an airplane to look for that missing ta4 Skyhawk it crashed and both men in that airplane miraculously survived and they were rescued by helicopter in total five search planes crash and a further five people die [Applause] it seems that even experienced military Pilots can't escape the Nevada triangle at that point they were starting to call it a curse you know five people died on top of the 35 despite an intense effort by the search and rescue team the gamble is special can't be found and with no plane to examine investigators can only hypothesize what caused the crash is that the freezing weather is responsible particularly a buildup of ice icing and winter storms were one of the greater threats the DC-3 was designed in the early 30s you hand fly them it takes a lot of concentration it's a lot of physical effort you're constantly looking to see how are we doing with the icing are we clearing the ice is it getting worse is it getting better do we need to try to divert if so where and so there's a lot going on you don't let the ice build up on the airplane ice can have devastating consequences on a plane in flight a buildup on the wings not only makes the plane heavier but reduces the aircraft's lift all of a sudden the nice smooth laminar flow around the wing is Disturbed it really degrades the performance of the aircraft was this the deadly combination responsible for the loss of the gambler's special until they find the aircraft never know and it isn't until six months later that they make a breakthrough the First Responders that got up to that crash site had to get there initially by helicopter only and it was horrific beyond belief because only one body intact there were all of the personal effects strewn about the crash site and pieces of people it took quite a while to clean everything up it was so grim [Music] hard to describe they had to pull sections of the aircraft apart to access the insides of it to a complete day recovery and investigation you stand there and you examine these artifacts in the crash site there's no question in your mind that these people were killed instantly you know the aircraft hit that wall at a cruising speed of 180 miles an hour the concussion alone would have knocked him unconscious they did not suffer they went instantly but was that evidence of a buildup of ice although the ice itself would long have melted they're Keen to find the valves that released antifreeze if they were closed the cause of the crash would be obvious when they eventually find them they are baffled in the wreckage the de-icer valves for the props and the windshield wipers were all the way open wide open the pilot had taken the appropriate action releasing alcohol and ensuring the plane's aerodynamic integrity was there some other form of mechanical failure the tail was the only part of the airplane and the outer Wings after the snow melted that could be recognizable as an airplane they found instruments they tried to look at as much as they could everything appeared normal you know there were no malfunctions that way nor did the pilot make any distress calls with the location of the crash site itself revealed that the pilot had veered away from the authorized Flight Plan could this new course have been in some way responsible for the tragedy [Music] when investigators check the weather reports for that day they realized that the pilot of the gamble is special had taken a shortcut to avoid the worst of the approaching storm fly into like heavy snowstorm you can lose your visual references quickly and then they become disoriented that alone has caused many accidents but the pilot was familiar with the new route he was taking the pilot took that route to try to save time he had done it before and he was gonna do it again they knew that this was his MO and even with reduced visibility the pilot should have known exactly where he was confidence would have come from precise knowledge of his airspeed plotting his direction using the compass he could calculate his position you know we're going to be getting out of this soon here they would have known that it's just a matter of 15 to 20 minutes before we're out of this so why had he inexplicably crashed into the surrounding mountains investigators dig deeper into the weather reports for the time of the crash they discover that the pilot was flying into severe headwinds crucially these strong winds would have given the pilot a false AirSpeed reading had they known the 35 knot headwind that they were flying into things would have went a lot differently [Music] this is a very dangerous margin of error as the plane fights Against The Storm Beyond rushing headwinds confused the senses and indicate that the plane is flying faster than it actually is these false readings affect the Pilot's calculations and he estimates that they have traveled further than they actually have we can't see anything they're flying on instruments they're able to stay essentially straight and level and they're going to try to go from a to based on a compass line you run into a headwind is going to slow the progress of the airplane the pilot was navigating correctly he was calculating distance correctly but the false readings from his AirSpeed indicators lure him into a fatal error he is free from the mountains he banks the plane towards La nowhere that he is he is steering into a rock face [Music] the nighttime storm the pilot doesn't see the mountain he flew right into that face [Music] the pilot should have followed the prescribed Flight Plan as the safe the safest route [Music] it would have taken a little longer it might have been a bumpy flight but he would have reached Burbank with he his aircraft and his passengers intact I've got to know a lot of people related to this they've named their grandchildren and her children after the people lost they still miss them very very much till this day could a strong headwind be the cause of a similar miscalculation leading to Steve Fawcett's crash foreign were clear all day headwinds or not there's no reason why faucet should fly into a mountain even the conditions and the perfectly functioning plane is a growing suspicion that the unique weather in the Sierras may be behind the mystery of the Nevada triangle the problem facing investigators is that they only have wreckage they don't have witnesses dead men tell no Tales so it's not like these people that died flying can Circle back and tell people how dangerous it is but one person does come back from the dead hidden in the records is an astonishing story where 30 years earlier a woman staggers out of the wilderness to a small town in California thank you April 1976 Independence California small town sat on the western edge of the Nevada triangle a young woman walks into a motel she had a fractured leg she had broken ribs she had suffered all sorts of other bruises and contusions I need some food she's bruised she's incoherent a drug-crazed hippie who is she only in hospital did anyone realize how close she had been to death she could smile there was relief salvation she might have expired in just a few more hours from loss of blood a name is Lauren Elder and she's the sole survivor of a plane crash high in the Sierra Nevadas her incredible story will provide a critical clue for why so many planes disappear in the Nevada triangle her story is an epic story of survival Against All Odds [Music] 26th of April 1976. Oakland artist Lauren Elder the friends prepare for a joy flight across Death Valley and the Sierra Nevadas foreign they're excited to fly over the mountains Lauren in particular has a special interest in the flight she was very interested in going because she loved photography yeah quite beautiful rugged extremely high mountains should have great photo opportunities the flying in a Cessna 182 an aircraft similar to the one flown by Steve Fawcett as they prepare to fly out of Oakland the weather is fine and warm there's no hint of a storm in the sky [Music] during the flight Lauren Elder is hoping to capture the beauty of the mountains [Music] twelve thousand feet the Cessna prepares to cross the Sierra Nevadas it was beautiful and sunny and the temperature was something like 78 degrees but the problem was is that this heat is increasing the density altitude of the plane as you increase in height the air is thinner so the aircraft can't perform as well because the propeller is just not getting the same amount of power as it pushes through the thinner air flying with reduced power and pilot must be careful to maintain altitude a good pilot always wants a lot of altitude between himself and the Ridgeline that he's approaching higher the better he warned Lauren Elder and his girlfriend that things could get clumpy and to expect a dip or a pretty good bump as they approach this Ridge line and as the plane approaches the ridge Lauren Elder explains something inexplicable happens [Music] play plummets into the side of the mountain the impact was really rugged tough the fuselage broke behind the back seat the left wing was damaged the landing gear was crushed miraculously there was no fire all the passengers have survived but only laurenelda and the pilot are conscious everybody sustained injuries most critical was the girlfriend of the pilot severe head injury and went into immediate shock the pilot very serious injuries as well and Lauren Elder broken bones cracked ribs contusions so she wasn't in good shape either but she was in the best shape of anybody on the airplane that's stranded 12 300 feet the side of the remote Mount Bradley a pilot's girlfriend is in serious need of attention without help the best they can do is try to keep her warm ER [Music] is there a radio in the plane okay Lauren Elder and the pilot returned to the broken plane to call for help civil air patrol base doesn't receive the signal the pair return only to find the Midway through a seizure a friend has stumbled off down the mountain face [Music] she stumbled down the slope and away from them where she later expired back in Oakland when the plane didn't return home a search and rescue team is sent out to scour the mountains for the missing Cessna 1a2 but they failed to spot them by now even the pilot has become disoriented and confused at this stage all that they can do is hope that they can survive long enough to get rescued they are at the top of the mountain ridge there's no easy way down and they're not dressed for this weather they're dressed for 78 degrees Fahrenheit down in Oakland and certainly not prepared and as night falls the temperature plummets Lauren Elder tries to keep herself and the pilot alive taking shelter in the wreck and sharing body heat so they huddle together as best they could I don't think the pilot initially realized how critical his situation was but going through that night he did difficulty breathing great pain she's not a doctor she doesn't have the means or methods or strength or ability to really offer much additional assistance staying with the pilot in the airplane that night and trying to keep him warm in herself warm so she did a great thing there during the night the pilot succumbs to internal injuries and hypothermia by morning it was all over [Music] laurenelda is now the only one alive who knows what happened in the air just before the crash [Music] clear help isn't coming foreign she makes a decision she said I'm not waiting up here another night to freeze to death I'm going to try it over land [Music] so she decided rather than wait for a ground Rescue Team or a helicopter she would self-rescue and start the long hike down in her physical condition the decision is tantamount to a death sentence there is no Trail it is brutal Terrain vertical steep as she descended she was hallucinating at points were they people did she see a house but she kept going she kept that Relentless descent lower and lower warmer and warmer Against All Odds one of her hallucinations eventually turns out to be real one more push and she'd be safe and she was driven she could see salvation and she went for it she went to the nearest place where she saw a person that was raised in motel after two days in the punishing Sierra Nevada mountains laurenelda has made it to Independence California [Music] and this is during the time when the Charlie Manson gang had terrorize that area and people were fearful of hippies and people on drugs she went in and she said I've been in a plane crash I need a room I need food Ray looked at her and said I'm sorry we're all full the motel keeper was unaware that there had been a plane crash high in the Sierra Nevadas [Music] fearful she might be a stray gang member Ray calls the local sheriff luckily the sheriff had heard reports of the crash and guessed instantly she might be a Survivor the sheriff said I'll be right there he could see Lauren Elder inside he went in and he said are you Lauren Elder and she says yes I am and he says come with me I am taking you to the hospital she was saved in hospital Laura Nelda finally tells his story she recalls the flight was perfectly routine until they approached the mountains as they reach the peak the plane was suddenly pushed down by some invisible force as the airplane approached the ridge it could be described as by hand pushing the airplane down and they hit very hard they didn't slide up or down they slammed in push there the aircraft goes straight down it's almost like being in a roller coaster I mean just this world sinking away from under you your stomach drops you have just dropped through the air then she looks in front and they are smashing nose first directly into the side of the mountain Lauren Elder's crash has many uncanny similarities with the Steve Fawcett case two experienced pilots who knew the terrain and Analysis of the debris suggests faucets plane was also driven into the ground at speed could the same Force 30 years apart have driven both aircraft into the side of a mountain and if it did what was it after Decades of fatal plane crashes in the Sierra Nevada the investigators at last feel they are closing in on announcer they turn to Leading meteorologists for help although no one can talk to dead Pilots can interrogate Decades of weather reports fat from the the site itself and the team begins to discuss it they look at the weather conditions this historic data is available and the readouts are done by professional weather people they discover a pattern even on perfect clear days like the day of the faucet crash an invisible deadly force can be in play the interaction between scorching deserts high mountains and cool Sea Winds and create many strange air currents among the data one meteorological phenomenon stands out the Mountain Wave most people don't really think too much about what's happening at ten thousand fifteen thousand feet up in the atmosphere cool ocean winds Rush up the side of the Sierra Nevada mountains as they hit hot desert air over the summit they plummet back down this downward force is like a wave that can Force planes out of the sky just like ocean waves these Mountain currents can be unpredictable there's a limit to what can be known in particular with mountain waves it's really hard to know exactly when they're gonna break or where they're gonna break up on you and you can end up flying into breaking waves when you don't expect it I mean it can tear the Wings off an aircraft it seems that the unique Topography of the Sierra Nevada make these waves particularly ferocious the only thing worse is flying through a tornado tremendous updrafts and downdrafts that can throw a plane up or down 5000 feet the expert meteorologists gather weather data and run models of the wind force on the day of the faucet crash the scientists and the and they're just determined that the aircraft experienced the downdraft of approximately 400 feet a minute [Music] at the altitude needed to fly over the mountains Steve Fawcett's plane is only capable of climbing at 300 feet a minute [Music] no matter how skilled a pilot the downdrafts far exceed the power of a light aircraft anytime that you're flying with the elevation of the terrain being very high it means that the airplane's performance is degraded because the air is thinner climb capability is diminished which means you don't have as much Reserve performance should you need it they believe faucet even with all his knowledge wouldn't have been able to resist the overwhelming wave pushing him into in a light airplane You Can't Stop The Descent you don't have the climb performance to stop The Descent are you going to be able to get this sorted out before ground impact becomes a real question there is nothing you can all you can do is write it out you are Crown draft and the worst thing you can do is try and pull up or Force against it because you're now attempting to fight something that you can't fight it's almost like a giant current that you're you're fighting against that you cannot deal with you're giving it as much as much throttle as you got and you're pulling back as much as you possibly can and basically just flew right into the mountain especially on clear days experienced Pilots can fall prey to the Mountain Wave it explains why so many crash into the mountains as they struggle to combat the invisible and unpredictable Airwaves thundering down onto them [Music] it's a beautiful day blue skies yet there were some stronger Gusty winds over the Sierra Steve Fawcett was a risk taker but unfortunately on this day was not the day to be doing it a few weeks later close to where the hiker found Fawcett's wallet some human remains are uncovered DNA tests conclude that they are the bones of Steve Fawcett the world famous pilot declared dead my big concern was I was just hoping he didn't suffer and when I saw photos of the wreckage I don't believe he once the impact occurred that he was conscious from then on foreign having to call Mrs Fawcett to tell her what we had learned and it's never easy to talk to the loved ones of the victims that lost their lives and she was most grateful to uh to the board for it's um its interest and its ability to to really bring bring this accident to closure but the loss of his life is not in vain a lot of the aviation Community was surprised by Steve Fawcett's fate but I think it speaks to the precociousness of this Mountain Wave phenomena and just how dangerous it is to fly in the vicinity of these large mountain ranges Steve Fawcett's disappearance alerts the world to the dangers of the Nevada triangle and Pilots have due warning of just how unpredictable the Mountain Wave can be if it got an aviator of his skill level it could get others Mountain flying needs to be done very carefully [Music]
