this video was brought to you by the kind people over at Squarespace if you're interested in building your own professional-looking website then stay tuned for a word from our sponsor [Music] welcome back my friends today we have a tutorial that I have a lot of fun making so hopefully you guys enjoy creating your own as well and the reason why I had a lot of fun making this the reason why I liked this tutorial lot is because there's something in this for every type of person whether you're a beginner whether you're advanced and you can just keep building on this to create a lot of awesome looks I've been a big fan of creating a lot of futuristic elements talking about futuristic visual effects throughout my channel in the past but specifically this was inspired by a guy named Edward of super awesome visual effects artist here's this Instagram as you can see just mind-blowing mixing 3d stuff with real life which is something I really love as well so go check him out his Instagram will be down in the description so I'm going to show you a quick and easy way to create something like this so let's go ahead and get started we've got my normal shot here and you don't want to have a lot of motion blur you don't want to have a lot of shaky footage you want to make sure that your phone is in the center of your screen not too far away you can also tilt the phone if you want to get some cool perspectives with the graphic so let's start in After Effects I'm gonna right click on my shot replace with After Effects composition of course if you guys only have After Effects start with in After Effects so if you guys have been watching my tutorials for a while you probably think right click on the shot Trak and stabilize track the camera so if you were to do that here's what the track would look like and the reason why we're not going to do this is because you see all of our track points are around our phone but none of them are actually centered on the phone we want to make sure that the 3d camera tracker is centering and completely tracking only our phone so first off what we're gonna do is create a mask around our phone first right click in this gray area where you can go to layer new solid so create a solid you can make it black now what I'm gonna do here is open up opacity so you can click T on your keyboard and just lower that down a bit so that you can see your screen now I'm just gonna grab my pen tool you can click G just go to draw a box around my phone and it doesn't have to follow any specific edge we just want a box around the phone as you guys can see something like that now too of your video here go over to your black solid you can click em on your keyboard to bring up your mask options here open up that mask and you're gonna see mask path mask feather click on mask path and we're going to keyframe at the starting position so click that now we're just gonna move through the timeline here and we're gonna grab this mask and just adjust it for the motion of the phone and this is pretty simple it doesn't have to be anything fancy you can select here move the joints make sure you're adjusting for any parts of the phone that may be leaking over the mask all right so we're about done here doesn't take long at all maybe took me like a minute to do that so now what we're gonna do is with our masks open we can click this inverted button now everything will get darker except for our screen let's also go ahead and click T on this again and just put the opacity back up to 100 screen and now we can also feather that a bit so click em pop back into your mask and just bump this up a few pixels to make that soft so you should have something like this now what we're gonna do next is we're going to actually select all of this right click on it and we're going to pre-compose so click precompose and i'm just going to name this phone click ok so now you have this all in one pre comped layer and in this pre comp layer we can now right click on it track and stabilize and track the camera and this way we're going to track only what's on the phone screen and not any of the stuff in the background alright so check it out we now have all those track points on only our phone and you can even double click into this pre comp and you can delete the solid because we don't need it anymore so back in our main composition if you select this phone layer and in our FET controls you can select your 3d camera tracker and see what we're really working with so we have all the track points on the phone you can scroll through here make sure your track is nice and clean we're gonna go to where the phone is facing forward here and we're gonna use this bullseye and just right click in the middle and click create solid and camera so now we can click down here select this track solid and we can actually resize this to be the full size of the phone you're gonna see the track solid tilt with the phone as the phone tilts so everything should look good you guys can test your track and make sure it looks smooth here's where the fun part of the tutorial begins here's where you can start building the look of the phone from the ground up adding a bunch of elements so let's start with something simple let's go ahead and just add in a little circle animation HUD animation popping in like we have in our original cop here so to do that we're gonna select this track solid and we're gonna click ctrl D to duplicate it and now we can hide our original track solid we're just keeping that there so that we can come back to it later in case we want to redo these steps again now on a new track solid we're gonna right click on it and we're going to pre compose it and we can name this whatever it is you want to add on top of the phone so let's name it just graphics and you can double click into this pre-comp circle graphic layer and you can just delete the track solid from there so essentially now we have a track placeholder and you can put any elements in here that you like so if you want to save time you can Google free HUD pack free HUD elements or you can go or you can get a paid one there's a lot of awesome ones out there or even better you guys can create these motion graphics these HUD looks from the ground up it depends on how far you want to go with this you can make it very simple using shape layers or you can use Adobe Photoshop Adobe Illustrator and look up some HUD graphic designs on B Hance or Google Images and then just try and replicate them and then animate them in After Effects that's if you want to get really fancy with it we're just gonna use some simple little shape layers here to create some simple animation I'm gonna hold down alt and just click on my rectangle tool until we have this ellipse tool so we're gonna draw this circle here click S on our keyboard you see scale here we're gonna go about one second and we're gonna click this keyframe button and then go back to the beginning here and we're going to make this zero click play so click spacebar there you go you know how have a circle growing simple as that and if you want to make that a little bit faster just drag the keyframe back there you go and if you want to make that smoother you can select both the keyframes right click on them keyframe assistant easy ease there you go circle going out simple as that let's just add some lines around that and in fact I think this is a little too big so let's go to where the keyframe is and just lower that a tiny bit maybe 77 so now let's select that shape layer ctrl D to duplicate it and in this duplication I'm gonna rename this two rings we're gonna open it up open up the contents and open up the ellipse and you see our stroke and fill here go ahead and hide the visibility of the fill so we're left with just the outline now we can click s again to open up scale here and let's go ahead and at this exact point where the normal circle is filled just bump that up and there you go now you have a ring around your normal circle so things like this guys like I said you can look up so many different motion graphics tutorials let's even go into the contents of our original circle here and let's make it so that it's not a full fill let's go ahead and just make it a stroke but we're going to up the stroke width so it's more of like a ring within the ring that looks good let's maybe duplicate the top ring one more time this is looking good for now so we're gonna go ahead and put this into our scene so if we click back on our main composition here you're gonna see that the track solid that we originally precomposed our circle graphic now has exactly what we just created if we press play here you're gonna see circle is following the phone just like the track saw it was so now let's go ahead and just make the look of this little better it's kind of an oval now so just click and drag it so that it's more of a circle click place you can see the animation happened now another trick you can do is if you select this graphic here you're gonna see these three axis so your z axis is going to allow you to move this closer or further away from the camera so if you click the z axis and pull it away from the phone it's just gonna give it a little bit more separation for example you can put it all the way out here and you'll see it's still tracked or you can have it a little bit closer and so that's a great tool to know going forward as we build the look of this a lot more right off the bat we're gonna go ahead and just give this a more hologram look and it's very simple to do this again you can go into plugins a bunch of different stuff for it at its simplest form select the layer click T to bring up its opacity and just lower the opacity a bit so you can kind of see through it and another thing you can do is go to your effects and presets search up a glow effect and just drop that on there you can again use any plug-in or use the built-in after-effects glow so we're gonna do that select that circle graphic up and your effect controls you see you have your threshold your radius let's increase the radius of this so we get a look that we like as simple as that guys we already have a pretty cool futuristic look and this is why I said you can do this if you're a beginner or advanced because this is something that any beginner can do it's not that difficult to be able to create but if you want to keep piling it on and we are gonna pile on a good amount of it you can you can tack in 3d with this you can add in a bunch of different flashing glitches so let's go ahead and do that now so let's hide this layer for now so that we can have a clean look at our screen and what we're gonna do is we're actually going to create a layer to isolate the things on the screen and start making them glitch add any graphics onto the screen now a quick word from our sponsors Squarespace if you guys are interested in videography photography visual effects you want take it from a hobby to a side hustle or even a career you need to make sure you have good branding a lot of social media presence and a solid website today's video is sponsored by Squarespace an awesome website making tool I use it for my own personal website where I saw my digital products as well as I have my portfolio for clients there's a bunch of template looks for you guys to build your own website it's very easy to use using any of the blocks very customizable and it has a bunch of awesome features while recording this actually stumbled across a feature under marketing for Squarespace where you can send out a bunch of custom-made template emails to people on your newsletter so I'm definitely gonna start using that specifically super useful stuff like that it makes my life a lot easier if you're interested check out the link in the description we can give you 10% off your first purchase of a domain or website just use code max Novak for example to see what I'm actually talking about if you pay attention to our original compeer as you can see these apps at the very bottom are glitching like this very colorful so I'm gonna drag and find a spot where we have a clean view of the screen so something may be around here this is a pretty straightforward view of the screen so now what I'm gonna do is I'm going to select my bottom phone layer here and click control D to duplicate and now I'm going to right click I'm gonna rename this to screen isolated so on our screen frozen layer I'm gonna right click on it go to time and freeze frame it so now it's gonna pop up this thing 3d camera tracker don't worry about that just go to your effect controls on your screen frozen layer delete the 3d camera tracker so it's gonna put this little square here this is where the freeze-frame is but if I scroll long you're gonna see this is literally just a screenshot now frozen in time video of this exact place and this is perfect because now what we're gonna do is we're going to actually mask out the screen itself so grab our pen tool again and we can zoom in here and I'm going to make a little mask like this make sure you guys know the basics of masking so you can click and hold down to get around the bend of the screen so now what we're going to do is we're going to right click on this layer and we're gonna pre-compose it and this is an important step so make sure you don't forget to precomposed this here and we're gonna name the screen frozen alright so let's bring back the visibility of our original footage here if we scroll through you can find the exact spot where this lines up where we made the freeze-frame so right here now what we're gonna do and this is very important that you do this in the exact order I do it we're going to select screen frozen and we're going to parent it to our track solid so you can either drop down or pick whip it click on a track solid and then what we're gonna do is we're going to enable this 3d layer button if you're not seeing that click toggle switches and modes depending on what version of After Effects turn that on and now you're gonna see a mini phone screen matching the positioning now if you guys did that in the reverse order say for example you made this a 3d layer first and then you parented it for some reason it goes crazy like this and it's gonna fly all over the place so make sure that you guys parent to the original track solid first and then you enable the 3d layer now go ahead and open up our transform options here and we're just going to make this match where the original screen is so we can just click V and click and drag this here and you guys can even lower the opacity a tiny bit and then scale this up scale this up use the apps as a reference to completely match this together try and do that as best as possible to here is what that looks like if you guys want you'll see this is kind of bleeding over the edge you can bump up the mask feather so click em open up your mask and just feather that but we don't want that to kind of mess it up so what I'm gonna do is I'm actually just going to adjust the mask here so that it's not showing any of this top battery stuff we can leave that we can leave that from the original and now as you see if we play through here it'll rotate perfectly it looks like our phone screen but in reality it's a screen shot it it's a screen shot of it over top so here's what we created here's the original so as you see what I recommend you guys do here is so you don't mess anything up right click on that screen frozen and just pre-compose it one more time so before we start isolating and glitching the individual apps we're gonna ctrl D to duplicate that and we're going to rename this to screen hologram now with the screen hologram layer again we're gonna do that trick where we kind of pull the Z position so let's go to where the screens tilted and our z axis here click and drag that so that it's kind of over top of our original footage now we're going to give this a little hologram look so let's click T lower the opacity so that see through guys gonna mess around with your blending modes here so I like using the soft light the hard lights and get some really cool stuff go ahead and add a after effects glow onto there as well have fun with they create a look that you guys really liked so that'll give you this cool kind of reflection perspective as you tilt the screen and again just changing your blending mode your opacity adding any effects on top you guys can get many different looks for this here I put it on light and so moving along we got a little hologram here but say we want to make these apps at the bottom glitch colorful a lot of what I was showing in our original clip so we're gonna duplicate that again so ctrl D and we're going to rename this one to glitchy apps so with this glitchy apps layer this is a very important step because since this is a duplication of the screen frozen if we start going in here and changing things around it's also gonna change what's in this layer it's kind of annoying but there is an easy fix just right click on our new glitchy apps layer and go to reveal reveal layer source and project you're gonna see here's where that is we're just going to click control C control V in the project bin and then holding down alt you now have to drag that duplication onto glitchy a pretty annoying like I said but for some reason you just have to do that in the project bin so that those pre comps so that that duplication isn't linked together now let's pop into that glitchy apps layer here footage of our phone moving around now we're gonna freeze frame this one more time because we want to only isolate the apps and we can't have all this motion if we're gonna do that so good little trick let's pop in our original layer here when we added our freeze frame originally if you just click this arrow this is the little square where we did the time remapping so we can navigate right to where that actually happened and then not moving the cursor at all not moving this at all pop into glitchy apps this is the exact place where we freeze frames so let's just add the freeze frame again so time freeze frame and now if we scroll through here you'll see it's completely still and again this is why we pre calm things because sometimes if you try and do all this freeze framing and different changings of the layers if you don't pre comp it it could mess things up so now what we can do is we can actually just go in here and start creating masks on the app so grab our pen tool we're going to draw a little mask around this little Safari app here and you guys can get creative with how you do this you can create different masks for different apps different glitches for different apps what I'm gonna do is I'm just gonna click em on this layer here and I'm going to select mask 1 and just ctrl C to copy it select the phone layer and ctrl V to paste it so now we have a duplicate and let's all make these none for now so it's not taking anything away or adding anything grab mask 2 here and you can just click and drag that on to the next app and we're just gonna repeat that process so click on the phone layer control V make sure that's on none and essentially you could do this on every app here again you can mix and match the glitch I'm about to show you but either way we can now put these masks from none to add for all of them now at this point there's a few options you guys can do there's the paid option where you just drop a glitch plug-in on here and go to town you can make it glow you can make it do whatever you want now if you guys don't have any fancy glitch plugins if you want to do it a free way you guys can search for any free glitch footage on the Internet you guys can download those clips onto your computer as you see in this folder I just found a bunch of free little clips of different glitches that I can use and overlap so let's go ahead and use this one but what we can do is use the set matte effect and this is something I made a video on previously you can do this in premiere or After Effects I made this whole video trippy VHA VH trippy VHS projections it's a really awesome effect so drag that set matte on to you our analog glitch make sure you don't drop it on the phone drop it on the top layer and now in our effect controls for this you see take mat from layer set that to our phone layer set that to our phone layer source you can put it on masks and now you're gonna see your apps pop back up now we don't want this here we want these on top of our apps so uncheck stretch mat to fit now if you don't like how this looks how it's kind of grayed out you can just change the blending mode here so we can put it on light and you can put it on hard light soft light whatever you guys want that's the fun of doing this you guys can customize this in so many different ways I'm just showing you a few little tricks to help you get the job done just only lasts less than a second so what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna loop this and then redo this effect here so ctrl D a bunch of times to loop this out alright so now I'm going to select my first layer grab the set matte and just ctrl C to copy it hold down shift and select all these analog glitches right click pre compose them into one layer just like this I meant the cheese click into your fed controls control V to paste the set map so now as you see we have the glitch lasting throughout the whole composition since we actually freeze-framed what's in this pre comp here we can get rid of original freeze-frame on top so let's go to time and uncheck this enable time remapping we now have our apps glitching how they should it looks really cool I'm just going to touch on adding some more screen graphics a little bit before we move on so you have your screen frozen layer you control D to duplicate it and for this one or just let's just name this and again you have to do that trick where you right-click you go to reveal reveal a layer source and project and you just ctrl-c ctrl-v hold down alt and drag that onto here and that way they're not linked together so that's an important step make sure you do that now you can pop in here and you can change any of this stuff to your liking without messing up the other layers let's go ahead and just drop some little glitches onto here just do the same thing let's use that set matte effect it's already here so drag it onto here change our matte layer to phone and you don't have to stretch the mat to fit so here's what that's looking like and again you can change your blending mode maybe put it on soft light maybe put on lighten whatever you guys are feeling pop back into our main comp again if you're not seeing anything popping up you may just need to go to time take off the time remapping now since there's a lot of flashing on let's just show you individually what we made so we'll turn off the apps and as you can see just some cool little glitchy flashes going on so that's how you can add individual elements onto only the screen and that is honestly about it guys those are the main essential tricks for building the look the rest comes down to you how much time you want to put into this how much how much time you want to put into crafting to look there's so much to add there's so many different variations of this that you can do that's essentially how to create the look of this now as a bonus for this tutorial I'm gonna show you how to create this cool depth illusion which I did at the beginning of here and this is another Edward of inspired thing it looks really cool so to make things a little bit easier since there's so much going on on the screen turn off the visibility for now so we have a clean look of what we're altima trying to do so the only thing I'm keeping on is screen frozen obviously the 3d camera tracker and my phone so I point where I want to create my depth illusion I'm gonna take screen frozen and phone holding down shift to select them both ctrl shift D to split those two layers let's right-click and we're gonna rename this to depth illusion alright guys so on this depth illusion layer here that we have we're gonna go to effects and presets we're gonna search for the fill effect we're gonna drop that on to here it's gonna make our screen read you can scroll through here if you want to see what that's looking like and you'll see that the mask is messed up from earlier we're gonna want to fix that now so sorry I should have mentioned that earlier - maybe duplicate it so that you won't have to fix it but it's a easy little fix just grab here we don't want it to be red we actually want this to be black so make the fill color black and your effect controls so here's what it looks like here depth illusion layer is just a black solid over the screen now what we're gonna do here is we're gonna grab the phone layer where we split it we're gonna drag that up a bit this is just our original footage our background footage we're actually gonna go to where it says track mat and we're gonna change the track mat to say alpha mat inverted depth illusion so now that we've done that we can now place things underneath this layer and that's going to allow us to create the depth solution so we can take our track solid here controlled you to duplicate that and let's just drag this all the way down here where we can see it so underneath our phone layer but now we can take the z axis and you see if I lower the z axis it's gonna look like it's inside the phone and that's why we did the Alpha trap mat if you didn't do that if you try to do it with masks it wasn't gonna work just just based off how we set this up so if you want you can look up the stroke effect I think it's easier to actually just select the track layer the track solid go up to layer layer styles and then add a stroke this way now if we go to track solid here if we open up layer styles and our stroke options here we also have blending options it's opening up let's open up advanced blending and fill opacity let's make that zero we're not seeing the stroke and that's because we need to just grab the z position change the color of this let's put it on white so we can see a little bit you see it peeking through here that's great so to see this easier let's just click s to scale it and just scale it down a bit if you guys want you can even kind of grab the edges of the track solid and try to position it inside the phone as best as possible I think that looks good for now and you can scroll through here and you get a really cool look from this but so now let's just duplicate this or that it looks like it's descending down you're gonna get that depth illusion look from it all I need to do to do that is ctrl D to duplicate the track solid and then what I like to do is to have them kind of pop in one after the other I just click page down on my keyboard twice to move over to frames and then I just grab the z-axis of my duplication you're gonna get this ring look and depending on how far down you drag it it's gonna look different every time and again once you move over to frames grab the layer itself and then move it so it starts there so it'll go one and then the next and now we're just going to keep redoing those steps so page down twice ctrl D to duplicate move the layer over move the Z position and you're just going to keep doing that it looks a little bit weird and that's because of the layer spacing so what you need to do is you actually have to drag the first layer to the top and you kind of have to just drag it so that the positioning makes sense it should kind of look like descending stairs in terms of the layer aspect of it but make sure you do the rearranging at the end so that you can add in as many of these illusions as you altima Taiwan if you want to add something inside the illusion like for example I added a little subscribe I set going through here I just use the same trick I use the same trick to create these circles where I just duplicated another one of these tracks solids so ctrl D make sure it's at the very bottom of the layers here open it up see layer styles turn out the visibility so now you can see the track solid at the very bottom of this and this is how you can place things in different levels so if I won I could even move this track solid further down the rabbit hole here now once you have the track solid there it's as simple as just right-clicking the track solid pre composing it and naming it whatever you want to put in there so I'll just say YouTube now double click in that pre-comp delete the track solid and plop in whatever you want so make sure you reposition that pop back into your main comp now if you're not seeing this play through that's because you need to be careful with the timing of the clip so let me fix that so you guys can see a bit better position this to where this layer is starting double click in you see this is where my this is where the timeline is but this is where the clip is the clip isn't playing where the timeline is so you need to grab the clip make sure it just starts where it should pop back in your main comp and there it is if you want it to start maybe like right here where you can ultimately see it again you just put it to where you want it to start clicking the comp and just make it start right there so another great thing about this tutorial is it's teaching a lot of After Effects tricks and fixes not just for making the look at things that can help you in After Effects no matter what you are creating slap some color grid on it make it look super cool and that is that you know in the comments what you'd like to see next from me also a little side note to add this little glitch that I did here since everything since all this is transparent you can just drop glitch clips underneath and it will only affect that area but anyways guys link me some things that you would like me to make Oriol on do you guys make some really cool phone stuff like this link it to me on instagram @ underscore max Novak and as always guys thank you so much for watching thank you so much for supporting and I'll see you guys in the next one
