[Music] so [Music] oh yeah that's right everybody hey guys how's it going uh if you would like to um use the chat we got the chat going and uh i'm trying to see the chat it's kind of hidden a little bit here but yeah yeah welcome everybody to monday evening uh got some water give me a second here but tonight we're going to do a couple different things i'll give you kind of an update on uh streaming hopefully the stream is going okay i'll give you a few different things that i tried and then we're going to do a little bit of a comparison today between um editing audio editing and if that's not your thing that's okay i completely understand but it is my thing so i i'm always looking like uh blackmagic today introduced um their what is it the uh resolve 17 right and i'm always looking at that because i want to know whether you know whether they're gonna do some audio updates and they did quite a few today that are pretty cool um i'm going to concentrate more on the editing side of things because i think they're going in the right direction but there's a couple different functions that they could move around a little bit one in particular that kind of bothered me today but um uh we'll we'll get to that uh in just a little bit so uh first of all i'm gonna see what's going on here if you guys are watching go ahead and jump in on the chat here if you're watching live if if you're watching um post live stream if you have any questions about anything that we we do today just put in the comments i always come back and try to answer comments uh those guys are who are subscribed um [Music] if i can spell here hey there those guys who are subscribed know that i come back and i answer it sometimes it may take me a day or so because you know life happens uh but if you're um if you want to throw something out there any question on what's going on that you can't quite figure out on your own let me know i'll help you figure it out so all right so uh first things first if you haven't subscribed go ahead and subscribe because we're just we're about to hit the 1200 subscriber mark which is awesome thank you everyone who subscribed because that's i never knew i'd you know garner the interest of one person let alone 1200 so thank you for subscribing and also go to twitter and instagram because we're on there as well we're trying to build that up it's not you know maybe like 50 or 60 followers over there but uh um it would be cool to kind of build that up as well so if we can do that sweet i'm going to bring this down just a teeny bit here all right so um oh the other thing i was going to say just right off the bat here is i want to put another another plug for our patreon account and i before you go anywhere this is a different type of patreon account uh where most people it sounds like they're you know not necessarily like they're begging for money but it has a little bit of a negative connotation to it where they're asking for tips and that's basically what it is it's like hey i'll give you a little bit of extra a month and you'll provide me with some cool extra content well i don't have a lot of time i mean i haven't put out a new video in probably like 10 or 11 days so i'm working on one right now that's pretty cool but you know you kind of get into that that that time you just don't have the time to do everything so i thought i can't really ask for that because i already have hard enough time getting videos out let alone doing extra stuff maybe in the future that can change but i decided that we would do something that i call the high high tech on life equipment fund or gear fund on patreon so it's um it is a uh you know donate what you want you could do a dollar if you want a month not a huge deal but it builds up a fund so we can buy equipment test it by you know buy the gear test it here do a couple videos uh in-depth stuff if you guys want to do that and then once we're done doing all of that we we uh randomly give it away to patrons who are who are part of our patreon gear fund so if you guys like that throw it up there or you know go over to patreon i think i have it in the the link on this so or a link in the description on this video so jump over there and uh if you like no pressure at all just if if you want to be part of that we've got a couple people signed up already which is really cool so jump over there okay next thing uh now that we got all the housekeeping out of the way is uh we had the stream and the stream was acting really funny the last few times we've done it and i thought it was my a10 mini because at mini pro because anything i tried to do i mean everything looks good downstream as far as you know i had screaming fast internet i've got like you know a gig down and 40 app i know i i would love a gig up but that's not offered apparently in my area without going to a business plan because xfinity is just the worst they're just the worst anyways so uh so i thought everything downstream was fine so i didn't even think to check that side of things i had the atem going through a switch along with i think three or four other pieces of equipment here that were going through that switch as well and then into a single wall plate over here that i ran over the summer up into my attic which was awesome and then down into the basement where our internet comes in so i i thought that it was a very you know clean clean run uh and eventually uh i started just deleting things i ran a couple of packet loss tests and i was losing packets here and there uh over wi-fi and so right now the atem is plugged into the wall and that like straight into the wall no switch i'm bypassing the switch any computers i have are all on wi-fi so i ran it downstairs uh straight into the router so um we should be good ooh dude i can't say your name tylock or slalok lopez waterman dude two bucks you rock man thank you so much um hopefully you get some good stuff out of this um oh dude if you like the a10 mini pro tear down uh tyler lilac likes the the a10 mini pro tear down we've got a really good one coming up here uh and uh i spoiler alert i took it apart again but i did get some high-res photos of everything so we should be good um anyway so i plugged the atm directly in to the router so hopefully that deletes anything i'm also streaming it like uh streaming low on the atem settings so we should be good there as well and um i'm gonna do something here really quick hang on uh am i too big ah there we go okay i think that's framed a little bit better okay so i think i figured out the streaming issues i think they're done i think they're they're all set and good to go so that shouldn't be an issue anymore hopefully um most other things are are set up so we we don't have you know we don't have too much going on as far as other people watching things i think my wife is watching something on netflix which yeah i know that's probably not the best thing but i can't just ask her to sit for an hour hour and a half or wherever we go you know that just seems rude that's just rude right yeah that's what i thought so anyways let's um let's jump into uh the news of the day which is that blackmagic released or they announced the davinci resolve 17 the version 17. and they have a public beta going so if you guys want to go test that out go for it they've got a lot of cool new things that they did with um let me turn this on with the cut page i don't really use the cut page so i edit everything in resolve for one for two reasons uh one it's free you have the free version now eventually i will buy the full version because i think that gives you a lot of cool stuff but it's free so you can at least get your chops up on it and then jump to the to the paid version which isn't that much money and they're giving away a little controller thing which is which is cool so i edit here in resolve hey my beard's a little bit bigger than that one anyways uh and i rarely use the cup page but they did a few things today that were pretty cool that might send me over to to use that a little bit more although i really just like jumping into the edit page i was i was experimenting with subtitles by the way this was my uh rode wireless charging on the go so if you so let's take a look no if uh if you haven't seen that video yet run over to the channel um after this stream i'll put the link in the description for us to to kind of uh to so you can go and watch it um it was just this cool little case i made uh let's get rid of the subtitle track this case i made here that has um a battery underneath that's better a battery underneath here and then there's a charging port on the side and there are usb cables coming off of the battery a little um what do they call it a power bank and then it runs to these two guys and then just a little space for extra stuff and then i was able to put all the stuff that came with the uh wireless go stuff it came in this little pouch so i was just able to set that on top of the power bank so it worked out really well uh anyways that's a cool face too i like that uh so they did a lot of the thing that interests me the most out of everything i mean i i'm not a video editor that is not my specialty i'm an audio engineer so pro tools and obviously fairlight are going to be a big thing that i'm going to be interested in so i'm going to be wanting to see updates to their mix engine which they did their editing functionality which they did which was severely lacking in my opinion compared to really most of the stuff out there now fairlight is cool um in in a sense and they're they're trying a lot of cool things and i think they're going in an amazing direction and they just need to keep building on that so as they do that we get all these little nuggets of uh little little features here and there and don't get me wrong every single developer is like that so they're they're working with a very small market share right now because the majority of what is produced in um you have to think of it as a media composer which is a film editing software right from avid media composer versus final cut pro and premiere mainly final cut and premiere are doing are taking large large market share from avid from media composer and so if you're if you're going to be editing for feature film you're going to be using media composer if you're doing stuff as a run and gun filmmaker you're probably in premiere premiere or final cut now one of the things that abbott has lacked on um over the years is their ability to um well everybody you know resolve was was built up for color grading that's what that's their forte right and then they're building they've been building this amazing editing and um production software around their success and color grading and there's something just so appealing about that where everything is done within one program and a lot of their um their collaboration functions that they went over today and offered it for free which is really cool um they you you can have multiple people online um working on projects which is really cool and i think when you're all working in that same environment it's gonna make a better product faster right so so when we jump into uh into um davinci resolve here and we look at what they've done and how easy this is and one of the really great reasons the other reason why i jumped over so one was because going back to my first point one the reason i jumped on this because it was free and two is because it edited very much like what i was used to which was pro tools so when i come into the the edit page here pro tools lets you click down here on the timeline and you can adjust your play head where wherever you click and fairlight does that now but sitting here on the edit page let's get rid of the media pool here um it's not bad just to kind of click here and move around right um i did have to do um [Music] like a shift i had to do my own key command shift enter to take me back to the beginning but then i i you know it was really quick to just click and then i can grab and move things around and you know if i wanted that to bump up against there you know it was a very slick editing process so uh i jumped over to fairlight and i'm like oh cool this is a dub a daw within my editing software my video editing software sweet i don't have to do anything i don't have to export pro tools and everything can just be done in here well one of one of the biggest issues that i have currently is my macbook pro is eight years old i got it in 2012 and it's actually been really strong until today when i downloaded this beta and realized that i needed to have i've been on high sierra because everything's been working well on high sierra so i had to upgrade to mojave upgraded to mojave installed the beta here of resolve and uh things went not not good too well at all it was actually couldn't even run resolve it it just chunked along i couldn't i couldn't open any i'd open my project i'd walk away for like five minutes come back and then it would be open so there's some issues there i might just have to um roll my machine back to um to high sierra and and edit all my projects the machine we're on right here is a borrowed machine that i had to i had to get really quick so this is a borrowed machine and it works fine on here this is i think core i9 in this mac if i remember right and uh 32 gigs of ram so we're good there right anyway so i want to do a couple comparisons about uh what what blackmagic is trying to do and they are trying to grab some of that market share because who else who's who's on the audio side of all that well avid is because they they purchased did you design back in the day that is pro tools so we had pro tools is the is the standard right so this this project that i have up right now um oh let me put myself up in the corner there this project i have open right now this is the last video i released um about 10 11 days ago uh when i had this ready to go i would come to the to the deliver page and i would export it to pro tools and then i'd bring it over into pro tools and here's here's the project right here open in pro tools and i added uh more sound effects and thing you know adjusted the music a little bit more um did more editing here because this is a more familiar landscape to me and my thought process is uh i want to make fairlight my you know as as familiar as this but fairlight was so difficult to work with and i'll give you my my main frustration with fairlight okay so i'm let's go to the edit page in resolve and you're gonna have to take my word for this because i don't have a i don't have a camera on my fingers uh my keyboard here um but okay so when i'm in pro tools um i use the scroll wheel here on my mouse okay and i scroll a lot and it if i use modifier keys it gives me other options right it opens up a whole new world of of moving around a session quickly um so i can i can zoom in here i can go back and forth i can make my waveforms big and small if i select this one i can actually gain it up and down there's a lot of cool things you can do when you use the scroll wheel the the issue i was running into so just to zoom in so let's say i click here and i zoom in i'm holding down option and i'm using the scroll wheel and we are zooming in okay um if i hold down shift let me zoom back out here if i hold down shift we are scrolling horizontally obviously if i don't do anything scroll over scroll vertically it's very intuitive shift in most cases is going to scroll you know it it flips what it does so if i'm scrolling vertically and i hold down shift i scroll horizontally funnily enough if i come over to the edit page if i hold down my option button i'm zooming in right if i hold down shift oh let's see oh see they they changed it on me in the old version when i held down shift here it would go vertical or go horizontal scroll horizontal so when i go but then when i'd go over to fairlight and i'd hold shift it did this and it scrolled in on tracks like that now someone who doesn't work that way it's kind of annoying so um so so when you yeah see when you hold shift it does this funky thing and um an option universally zooms in and zooms out with the scroll wheel because i'm using the scroll wheel here zoom in zoom out sorry yeah anyways so i'm able to to to make that it's it's it's hard going back and forth so if they want me to be able to edit in here at least give me the function to change that and they might i just haven't found it yet i've searched everywhere to be able to change that and i can't it seems like that is a locked feature so it looks like uh just from our little experiment here that they did make everything um uh universal so whatever page i'm on if i hold down now to horizontally scroll i have to hold down command or control on a pc and then i will horizontally scroll um and i mean that's great and everything but it's it's not you know it'll just take a little bit to get used to um so uh the differences between the two i mean i i work in pro tools every day so i'm very familiar with this um it's it's very simple to to move around and to select things and to do that and to separate and move this around you know i can do all sorts of things here i can i can cut that move that over uh uh trim that up and then i think it started as a fade in i think this already doesn't already have fade yeah that already has a fade on it so i can adjust that um this fade a little bit longer if i want you know i can adjust the fade arc on there exactly which one i want to do equal power i can adjust this you know i can go fast in pro tools that's just because i'm used to it you know that's how every nle and all that stuff is done um so hey talk we'll get to your your questions a little bit later um he's got some interesting stuff going on or some some information so we'll get to that in just a minute after we finish here so uh the i i wanted to take this i it takes time right to come over to your export page and export out uh an aaf and bring it into pro tools mix that down and then spit it out to back in here into davinci resolve so i really really want to use the fairlight page they just make it a little bit difficult to do today was a big stride now i'm going to go back over here to pro tools and if you notice up here if you're new you know if you've never done anything with pro tools editing is an interesting thing in pro tools or it was at one point they fixed that by the smart using the smart tool which is right up here in the uh when you see all three of these this is the trim and then this is um the grabber tool and that's the selection tool so i can select with that with this i can trim the ends of things um you know and then with this i can grab i can grab stuff and move it around okay they have the the smart tool though which is selecting all of them and so if we go in on this waveform here and if i move above on the upper 50 percent or the top 50 percent i've got my select tool if i go below it i've got my grabber tool and i can move things around if i move to the end i've got my trim tool and if i move it into a corner all these these have fades on them so i'm going to delete the fade here so if i move into the corner here i've got a fade that i can do and you can preset what type of fade you have in the settings uh so it's it's really fast to move around and and do what you got to do right um so and i i really wouldn't be making this or or you know doing this this video if if uh davinci hadn't called out pro tools not called out they just said they're trying to make it a little more like pro tools because they realize that that's where most of the guys are who are doing post production pretty much all the guys who are doing post production are doing it in pro tools so they want to make their platform here like pro tools which makes complete sense so they came up with their own smart tool here so [Music] they had the selection tool here by default trim is always on so let me get rid of that trim is always on so you can grab audio and trim it right um and one thing side note your honor um one thing that i get used to in here is that i can i can snap it so if it's you know i could snap it to something well that's more on the video side so if i'm over here and i i make an edit it snaps to it and then i go into into pro tools and nothing snaps because it's all just super fluid and it's not it's not frame based it's sample based so it's like super smooth and buttery and all that fun stuff and uh so then i come back over here and uh you know just jumping back and forth is pretty crazy so uh this one this one's kind of the same on the audio side it's super smooth uh it allows you to lock see how it's locking to that let me zoom in a little bit further here um it's locking to that boom and then i can let go and then it locks if i get rid of that function then i can make super super fine movements and edits and things like that oh kind of brought that over that's kind of cool anyway so they decided to make their own smart tool so we have the selection tool which allows us to select and move right and and then we had the well i think that's the graph that's a grabber that's like the grabber tool right and then this is the selection tool so you can come in here and see it's just very difficult to work with it's like okay well what am i where am i going what am i selecting oh i didn't want to do that you know it wasn't very intuitive because i came from a pro tools background so they came up with their own version of the smart tool which basically combines these two tools together and it runs the exact same way if you're up here on the top 50 you've got your selection tool if you're on the bottom you've got your grabber and they even give you a grabber hand which is funny now you still have your trim when you run to the sides here and you still have your fade at the top here right they also allowed you to wherever you click with with this tool um except in grab mode you have to be in um selection mode it moves the the play head which is great because that's exactly how pro tools works so you can you can grab things here and select them um and i don't know if i can do that no don't want to say that anyways there's other key commands i need to learn because i don't go very fast in this yet um but you know this one with with fades you can you can grab this and move things around however you want it's a little bit more um there's a little bit more flow to it you can do that in pro tools now but this this is uh this is kind of an interesting way to do your fades your crossfades um so they actually have improved this which is nice uh so i can go here and i can hit play and that's where i am in the timeline um sorry i don't have any audio going right now but you know i can move around but the the interesting thing is uh we have this thing in pro tools it's called insert what is it um timeline follows insertion follows playback so let's say i've got this here and i hit play and i hit stop it's gonna continue playing if i hit play again it continues from where i left or where i originally hit selected right like that um then if you hit uh insertion follows playback um then if i hit play and i hit stop you'll see that this uh these blue triangles these blue arrows will move to wherever i stop and then it'll pick up from there it's great when you're just slowly going through um now uh if i select up here um well the interesting thing is it doesn't do that it's like i select here and it moves to there and then i hit play and it's good and it'll go back to that okay but if i select up here somewhere else this is where my this is where it's going to start from is right there right it's not going to start from over here until i click over there so but even when i hit stop it's going to go back to there so there's we've got to find some sort of insertion follows playback which i think there is something i saw them selected but i i got this installed about an hour before we started the stream so it wasn't super apparent to me where that was i think i saw them on their stream today do that so if you have time it's a two hour like over two hour stream which is insane uh that's like putting apple to shame but uh it's very much doable i believe i just need to find it i'll do an update update on that uh some other video but uh i i'll keep doing some more um uh messing around with this because i really do want to edit my audio in fairlight because fairlight fairlight's a cool program and i really i really enjoy what they've been doing which is uh you know trying trying to make everything together right make everything come together in in one one program one uh one environment so you don't have to you don't have to jump between different programs which honestly that's like the worst part about being a freelance engineer is making things work i got rejected for like freelance work today because i didn't use adobe audition i've been editing for 20 years in pro tools and they don't think i can use audition it's not that difficult even if i don't use audition i'll give you the same results out of pro tools it's not it's not rocket science here uh let's see the other thing i wanted to show you guys is they came out with um a new audio console which is pretty cool so let's jump over that uh this is just on their website they came out with this tw and the interesting thing is it's um it's 12 faders and it derives from these bigger consoles and what i think they've done that's pretty cool is they give you a smaller console with just as much uh functionality some really nice uh leds up top here do they have a better shot here we go like these channel strip leds here which are awesome i mean that that is just amazing in itself um i'm going to show you another one um avid s3 and the s3 was a cool thing in its time um but it is it's kind of at its at the end of its cycle so this is the s3 where are we oh we're on vintage king hey you guys are great okay go away all right so if we go to um sweet well we'll go to sweetwater because they usually have pretty good pictures five grand for this thing okay yeah you get four more faders but if you look at the scribble strips at the top there they're monochromatic the knobs have different colors and those leds above the scribble strip have different colors that come on um but this guy just seems super fluid it's a basic same basic setup as as the s3 from avid but it's brand new it's specifically for um i forgot to put myself there it's specifically for um davinci resolve for fairlight i don't know if i i think it's proprietary i'll have to look into that but i think it's proprietary to resolve but the cool thing about this let's see if they show it because it's it's really awesome is that you can plug this guy into an external monitor see it's got an hdmi out right here which is cool you can run it to an external monitor which is awesome because you can get so much more resolution and you've got each channel you can dive in deep all this cool stuff um but you uh you get it in the small package which is great um and i mean these consoles they've got to be tens of thousands of dollars if you look at any other mixing console from avid uh from ssl from um api you've got your nev digital consoles that they use for mixing film mostly it's the avid s6 and their s4 consoles but those are tens of thousands even if in s6's they're like flagship from avid hundreds of thousands of dollars so you're going gonna be easily over a hundred thousand dollars if you spec it out right um so i'm assuming these are gonna be the same way very cool they also gave you the ability to build up these these bigger consoles uh or customize these bigger consoles which is pretty cool i wouldn't mind checking out these these look pretty sweet the audio editor i don't even know what that is that is a cool come on give me a close-up give me a close-up where are you there we go audio editor console that is interesting that is kind of a cool setup i haven't really delved into these too much because i didn't really need them for what i'm doing right that is pretty cool uh but completely out of my price range right i'm i'm in my home studio here and you know everything i can do is pretty much can be done in the box which is how most people are working these days if you work in a facility that can actually afford this stuff by all means in my studio work i have an s4 console that's what we use that's what was specced great stuff but this looks really cool and you can edit in the same edited mix in the same program that your video guys and colorists and everyone else is using so very very cool a lot of cool stuff today from black magic which they always i mean they've been knocking out of the park right they've been killing it recently with uh with their products i mean obviously with the atem stuff and then with um uh each each version of that right the the regular the pro and the iso um they had the pocket 4k in the pocket 6k a year or two ago and they've just been killing it so i think every time that that they have a new stream that's or a stream that's coming up to announce new products you want to be there you want to be able to see what what they got going on um so with that there is uh let's see that's pretty much it as far as um you know pro tools versus fairlight i'm still more comfortable in pro tools fairlight you're running a lot of things around it so for instance um if i'm in pro tools let's jump back over to pro tools here i'm in pro tools here and i could bring up a video monitor here right of my video that i created and it runs fairly smooth but i got to tell you the the avid video engine on on pro tools is just the twitchiest little thing in the world because sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't and especially in the latest version and i know this isn't necessarily avid's fault but because in i think catalina mac got rid like completely rid of quicktime 7 which a lot of those codecs is what pro tools relied on for their video engine so you got a lot of basically you don't have any you've got issues now so when i export out of resolve i have the option let's go to resolve here i have the option to to export specifically for pro tools because they know it'll read an mxf uh dnxhd codec and then i just do a 720p because i don't need super high res when i'm doing audio work because it's just a reference so when i'm back over here in pro tools um let me there we go i was afraid to put myself up there i should probably write a macro right probably uh then i've got this video here and this seats up some power it really does um let's see if we got our system used this year probably won't show up much here because this is a pretty killer pro or pretty killer mac yeah it's not doing much but on my old computer my old one over over yonder and uh that kind of took a dump today then that one that one would really be struggling we'd be we'd be like peeking out the cpu everything would just be awful right here so um so my i guess my whole point is um where pro tools is meant for audio editing right and then it has a video functionality to be able to view video you can have multiple video tracks in the hd version or ultimate i think they call it now but if you run over here to resolve the issue with resolve and having a a daw attached to an nle video editor is that you have both those sides right so excuse me so that that means you have your video engine and your audio engine working together all the time perhaps there's a way to turn this off i don't think there is but in addition to a high high demanding video editor you also now have a high demanding audio editor and it really can slow things down that's why i haven't done a lot in fairlight that's why i still export out to pro tools because i can export out of of um resolve and into pro tools and then i've got everything set up there that i need i can work fast i can export and every time i would go over to fairlight here i would just have issues whether it be i just couldn't get the editing right like there's their cut and paste things still bothers me like see how i don't know it's just so weird um let's see if they're duplicating oh look they finally got a duplicate function there that's good so there's there's just things that now they're finally cleaning up and i think that those who have those who get projects within davinci resolve and are using pro tools can probably feel a little more comfortable once they get into resolve now they did a really good job today of or with this this version of resolve 17 to correct some of those things and make it more appealing to audio editors like myself where if i get a project in resolve i can just edit and resolve mix and resolve and export out and resolve so that's pretty much it that that kind of covers what i was thinking about with with these programs and they're they're kind of editing differences it wasn't super deep but um it kind of gives you gives you a little bit to think about when when you get your next project um so yeah that's i still will work in pro tools because i have to every day for my day job and i will continue working in resolve because that's how i edit video uh but i think with this new version i will probably do a lot more of my editing and mixing within fairlight uh so hopefully i can give you guys an update on that in the future all right so um i've got my little laptop here and we're just gonna look at a couple of different uh things say tylock you my friend are awesome uh anyone else have any questions go and throw them in the chat um let's see tilak says uh just got done doing a live streamed dance show sweet there were two performances uh we all you know let me jump back that was really funny if you guys want to look at resolve all day i can leave that up but uh i'll jump back to me my ugly mug uh so tylock said i just got done doing a live stream with two two dance shows they were two performances we alternated dances choreographers and with pre-recorded site-specific versions of covid cleaning just yeah awesome dude do your part eh um i had some bad trouble with sound to realize i was using trs adapters for the mic ends on the a2 mini pro really thought that was correct well turns out it was not ts was the only thing that would work and the left removed and worked and left and left to remove the hum sorry for being off topic no that's cool um so the interesting thing about the atems is they are they are unbalanced inputs uh and i think i spoke uh incorrectly about that in a couple of videos where i didn't realize exactly what we had there yet they are unbalanced inputs they're stereo inputs but they are unbalanced so they are a trs connection and for instance when i'm using a lav mic i will run a specific cable that's an xlr female or sorry an xlr male what am i thinking sorry that's to run into my zoom i'll run like a quarter inch out of my rode wireless go pack and an xlr into my h6 when i'm running it into the atem i'll use the included cable which is a trs to trs 3.5 mil but some for for whatever reason that does work now if you were running music off of a um like an ipod or something that should work too but not as far as a microphone goes um and here's where here's where it gets tricky because i've done a couple of videos one was was how to get audio like all things audio right you guys have probably all watched that one uh the the issue that i have noticed over over using the atm and i did another video where i got four microphones in it right without using an external mixer which is cool in theory except the mic pres on it sound like gorbachev they're the worst they really just suck and that is not an uncommon thing around black magic stuff which is unfortunate because i think they should probably look into that a little bit further because every mic i've plugged directly into the atem has had a significantly louder noise floor if it was an isolated incident like i plugged in one thing and then i plugged in another and it was fine then that's one thing but this was consistently bad so so i decided to um [Music] to just use an external mixer um i've got a cheapo 100 mixer sitting over here it runs this microphone in and i do have to crank this because this is a low output microphone the sm7 but i've got my tunes running in there for my bumper music and then i've got an output out of that going into the atem and it's it's literally uh i think i've got an rca unbalanced rca left and right going to a trs connection and that's running it in stereo so if i run like let's say i run some music here you see you got the music there that's in stereo because it's a stereo input okay so um and you'll hear that that'll just be in stereo because i'm running it in stereo into the mixer and then i'm going to be running it you know out of the out stereo into the atem which has a stereo input let's go ahead and stop that so my suggestion would just be um let's see it turns out it was not okay this is about a yamaha console okay was it one of their um i wonder if this is one of their little ones or something and that's another thing you need to look on there um if it was out of a uh one of their larger consoles like uh ql1 or cl5 cl or ql series and you're coming out xlr you're trying to run a balanced signal and make it unbalanced probably within the xlr and then running that quarter inch in or that eighth inch into your atem what you need to get is this thing from art called a clean box and this will cleanly convert a balance signal over to an unbalanced signal so yes it's another little piece of gear but it'll it'll make the right right um uh connections it'll make it'll make it better it'll make it sound right i've heard people have a have a lot of success with those so uh the interesting thing about my little mixer here is that i do have an unbalanced output it's a tape output that's what they call it a tape output and it's an unbalanced output so it uh can easily it's unbalanced right i don't need to to convert it from balance to unbalanced it's unbalanced um so easily just comes out of my mixer and goes right into the atem and sounds pretty good i think so i would probably look at that uh tailok if that's the issue that you're running into am i saying your name right dude i don't know if italic italic um anyways man yeah i would say i would check that out uh yeah it's different than a direct box um the the clean box is com is specifically a balanced unbalanced converter or unbalanced to balance so if you have um you can use it as a let me let me see if i can bring it up here on the computer i get my keyboard back over here let's go over to chromichrome and we'll go to our sweetwater here uh cleanboxpro and so this is the guy right here okay so this is a unbalanced uh sorry this is a bounce unbalanced converter so if you see on one side here we've got xlrn and rca in and then on the other side you have xlr out and rca out along with um quarter inch or sorry eighth inch out even so you could just run an eighth inch trs to an eighth inch trs if you really wanted to call me t yeah okay i'll call you t-man um so this this allows you to go both ways though so if you've got um a a computer so i guess it can be considered a direct box in that sense because a lot of direct boxes will take computer output so if you're running tunes off of a computer but you need to run it into two xlr inputs this will convert it from uh unbalanced to balanced now i think like here's the thing though is we're coming out um plus 4 db so that's i believe that's line level so you're going to be after having to run this into a line level input on the mixer but you can see there i keep moving around too fast sorry guys um you can see there that it does convert it properly though that's that's the issue you just want to be converted properly so in that sense you get that box it's what was it 80 bucks yeah 80 bucks there or at the top 79.99 you could probably even find it used for less uh but that should i should do it man t that should be good for you um other than that i don't think there were any other questions in here so i think what we'll end up doing is um we will call it a night there fellas thank you for tuning in here and uh i think we'll try to do this again next week and uh hope you guys have a good week if you have any questions again put them in the comments uh go check out our patreon page link below a couple other videos go check out our channel subscribe all that fun stuff and uh also if um if you wanna go check us out on twitter and instagram go there too okay all right guys i'll see you next time [Music] you
