we're gonna go back to John chapter four John chapter four and again this is in continuation from Wednesday night and we're titling this message at the well again and we're gonna go to this ancient well that was thousands of years old even when Jesus was at the well and of course today it's even many more thousands of years old and most historians believe it still exists and you can actually still go and visit what is called Jacob's Well so we're gonna go to John chapter four and I'll start reading just a couple of verses starting with verse one it says in John chapter four soon the news reached the Jewish religious leaders known as the Pharisees that Jesus was drawing greater Club greater crowds of followers coming to be baptized then John Jesus heard what was being said and abruptly left Judea worked and returned to the province of Galilee verse four and he had to pass through the Samaritan Territory Jesus arrived at the Samaritan village of seikar near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph long ago we read by his long journey he sat on the edge of Jacob's Well he sent his disciples into the village to buy food for it was already afternoon soon as Samaritan woman came to draw water jesus said to her give me a drink of water surprised she said this of course she's surprised because Jews had absolutely no dealings with the Samaritans the question is why racism racism in all of its many forms so because of the apparent and over oppression and racism the Jews particularly had towards the Samaritans who they considered in their words a mixed breed so the Samaritan woman looks at this Jewish man who we know is Jesus and says why would a Jewish man ask a Samaritan woman for a drink of water and true Jesus style he says kind of a mysterious statement to this woman he says if you only knew Who I am and the gift that God wants to give you you'd ask me for a drink and I would give you living water living water will stop our reading there will continue telling the story over the next few minutes again we're titling these couple of sermons at the well again and I want to say this to our community into our church I believe historically I believe for our community for church home we are at the well again Jesus is asking us to come to this well again this as well that he purposely intentionally sat on and was present and they're waiting to engage this Samaritan woman I believe our church is to spend time at this well with Jesus and allow him to shift change adjust firm reveal things to us that are necessary right now in the month of June 2020 in the United States of America and around the world so my request is will you go with me to the well again and let's watch Jesus and watch who he is we join me in prayer God thank you for the minutes and moments we share I thank you so much for who you are for your grace and for your love I pray in all of this God that the news of who you are and how good you are will overwhelm us today it is your goodness that changes the way we see the world ourselves and others and we thank you for that bless our minutes and our moments Lord you know every single person watching right now you know exactly what they're facing you know exactly what they're going through and you are going to meet each person there we thank you for it in Jesus name and everybody said amen amen amen I just want to say as we begin here I am so in love with church on what I mean is not our name not buildings not camera's not synthesizers who says synthesizers what is this 91 you know not synthesizers but people I love you I love the people of Churchill I love who you are I love what you're about and I just think you you're the most extraordinary people I have ever known and I just want to say again case I haven't said it enough it is my highest honor other than being a part of the kingdom of heaven because of the free gift of Jesus this extraordinary woman that I've been able to be married to for 20 years and the three kids that she has given me right up there is getting to be the pastor of this extraordinary community I love you very very much and I thank you for your trust your belief in our community and its leadership and we love you very very much well going again to the well now it may seem very simple and not complicated at all it's like Oh perfect we're going to go to this story of Jesus at a while talking to a woman I'm sure it's going to be wonderful and it is but it is imperative for us to understand the cultural tension that frankly would have been thick that afternoon approximately around noon or maybe in the one o'clock hour at what is known as the heat of the day Jesus sits down at Jacob's Well or Joseph's well it's a very very well known well you can go to places like Genesis 34 and you can find out more about actually this well that Jacob dug and gave his inheritance to Joseph Jesus sits there so much to be said of him his of him sitting there but he sits at a time where frankly Wells typically were abandoned Wells like this were utilized early in the morning or in the evening or even in the night time in the cool of the day to avoid the extreme heat Jesus goes in the extreme he goes during the time when the well is abandoned he goes no doubt not because he cares much about the well he cares about the woman who he knows apparently is on her way there Jesus sits as this well the Bible says he sends his twelve Jewish disciples away the Bible says he did that for them to get food but I'm sure as well in my opinion that he sent them away because frankly they would be frustrated that Jesus engaged with a Samaritan let alone a Samaritan woman these twelve Jewish disciples would have been raised in the very similar way that ancient Jews were raised and that was they were raised and taught it was instilled in them that the Samaritans who by the way believed in the law of God read the Torah and thought themselves to be a part of God's providence in God's plan and yet the Jews despised the Samaritans for believing this believed them to be less than human believed them to be certainly undeserving of God's favor and blessing on their life so there is extraordinary tension at this well and Jesus walks right towards it goes right towards it sits at the well and here comes a woman a Samaritan woman apparently in ancient time Jews knew and Samaritans knew what each other looked like the distinctions and differences even in the melanin of their skin for instance or even in the features of their face would tell us Samaritan or a Jew you're not one of me and so they wouldn't look in each other's eyes they would avoid each other and frankly when it came to the Samaritans if they crossed particular lines even legal ramifications could be involved Jesus sits at this well and here comes a woman and things get extraordinary even though we're not totally understanding them but because of its context and culture when Jesus as a Jewish man asked this woman for a drink there's several layers here to why she is shocked number one even a hollow would have been shocking to her even a hey would have been like excuse me and she probably wouldn't have responded this woman as well would have been taught when you come across Jewish people here's what's going to happen particularly she would have been taught no doubt when you come across a Jewish man here's what's going to happen no question in my mind this woman has no intention of speaking to this odds situation what is this man by himself a Jewish man in Samaritan territory hey you're in the wrong neighborhood we this is not this is not your place and I think later in the conversation that even is revealed she's like what are you doing here and yet Jesus is not there by accident and Jesus doesn't just say hello he takes it a step further which is increasingly frustrating to the cultural norms he says I'd like to share a drink with you now you and I here give me a drink that's that's actually it didn't come across it wasn't like hey give me a drink it's not how it worked it was like let's share a drink now this woman is flabbergasted because not only do Jewish men not talk to Samaritans particularly Samaritan women in the in this ancient culture Jewish women were not even seen as as valuable as Jewish men so again speaking crudely about the cultural context we're studying today Jewish men Jewish women Jewish children Samaritans probably can't even see how low my hands going Samaritan women so when Jesus says I'd like to share a drink with you she doesn't trust him at all she's like oh oh you you can't tell I'm Samaritan can you not tell I'm a woman and that's what she says isn't it she goes why are you talking to me furthermore you're not supposed to share a drink with me you're not supposed to the unthinkable is that we would table together or share a drink or food or that that would be too intimate what are you saying and then Jesus flips the whole thing and says if you knew who I was I have gifts to give I love that about Jesus he's come to give us gifts you don't earn gifts or they're not a gift payment is what you earned he says I have I have gifts to give you you can turn to deserve it please hear this about Jesus he gives gifts he's a gift giver grace is a gift Jesus is a gift you don't have to earn it deserve it he says if you knew who I wasn't a gift I wanted to give you you'd ask me for water and I'd give you living water just like I do you think you're a bigger deal than Jacob and Joseph and and they start into this conversation Jesus says if you drink from this well you're gonna have to come back and get more water I want to put a fountain or well on the inside of your soul that bubbles up every day and it will satisfy your soul forever he's like okay okay and then it gets even more odd again difficult for us to understand because of the cultural context she brings up theology theology which is our understanding study or view of God and she says well hey let's talk about the locations of worship we Samaritans believe it's okay to worship here you Jew say it's now to us this seems like a relatively normal conversation my brothers and sisters this is unheard of Jewish men would not even talk about theology with their wife certainly they would let anyone know if they did women were uneducated women had nothing to contribute when it came to theology particularly theology that was a that was a man's job that was man's work and this woman says all right you're different you're something's not let's talk about theology and what does Jesus do he doesn't say that's none of your business he doesn't say that's beyond you he doesn't say he goes let's talk about it Jesus begins to have a respectful kind considerate passionate theological conversation with a Samaritan woman want to be cleared out Jesus is categorically raging against cultural norms now as we continue the story here's the one point I want to make today they given this theological discussion and this woman kind of comes to a conclusion that that frankly I can relate to she goes well we'll listen the anointed one the chosen one the superhero the Messiah he's gonna come listen to what she says and he'll tell us everything we need to know Jesus probably pauses and he says oh I am the I am speaking to you right now in other words he says you don't have to look anymore you don't have to wait anymore I'm him this is a whole nother layer the Messiah wasn't supposed to come for Samaritans he's the Jewish Messiah in fact one of the reasons the Jews despite the Samaritans despised the Samaritans is because the Samaritans believed that they would have a part in the Messiah and the Jews were like you will have no part you have no part and the messiah comes to earth and he actually does something different than his people thought he would do and he comes with a Samaritan woman my brothers and sisters I want to urge you do your research in the New Testament and count how many individual people Jesus reveals himself to like this it's not a lot now he'll thirty times in the book of John he'll say I am I am I am but one on one telling someone I am this is a rare and infinitely treasured valuable moment and he reveals himself to a Samaritan woman the message is so loud and so clear it's it's overwhelming but I want to draw your attention and this is where I'm gonna end and Elijah is gonna come play the synthesizer I'm gonna call it synthesizer for a year so I'm gonna do thanks for playing the synth short for synthesizer I think you get it he says one translation says I am who you're looking for now what's amazing is um for instance if someone came to you and said hey are you are you so and you said I am they wouldn't go you know like it's kind of your word there were but when he says I am which is the ultimate title if you will forgot I am right I am The Good Shepherd I am the Lion of the Lamb I am that right but but I am as I am and literally she probably heard it in the original language was I am the I am you speak up I am the I am and in that moment this is supernatural I want you to consider the implications all of the oppression all of the injustice all of the racism we haven't even talked about the fact that she's had five failed marriages and divorce was a shame in these days it was a shame and she had five typically women couldn't file for divorce so five men filed for divorce against this woman and the sixth man she wouldn't marry that's where she's at and Jesus reveals himself to her because he is her Messiah in that moment her eyes are open I want you to think about this just that the mention of his name I am a lifetime of oppression and racism by Jews is eclipsed by the revelation of Jesus and boy I've been in this place recently where I I read these stories and I think to myself Jesus I need to know this this Jesus show me who you are who is the Jesus that who reveals himself and just by revealing his nature and who he is what what happened to her so what happened to her brain what happened to her perspective what happened to her worldview what happened to her identity what happened to her concepts what happened to what she had been taught what happened to her culture her how she was right all of it was eclipsed by Jesus neither this is a true story or it's not but if it's true it is extraordinary but notice what Jesus says he says I am D I am now write the verse before members she says the Messiah's coming and he will tell us everything we need to know this this woman is sharp she understands something about the Messiah he will come one of his titles is the desire of all nations he will come but notice what she says he will tell us everything we need let's just talk about this for a second Elijah's playing the synthesizer softly so it will lessen the the wonderful painful truth that I'm gonna share with you okay here we go Jesus is everything you want let me say like this Jesus is everything you'll ever want but he's also everything you'll ever need now here's what I think is happening to our church we are experiencing Jesus right now as a community not just the way we want please hear me but the way we need if this story in these sermons over the past several weeks that this is your first time ever welcome but for those that have been a part of this community if these sermons have been a little frustrating you're on the right track if if there's something already I've said today if saying the word racism bothers you you're in a good place I don't mean it should bother you I just mean maybe Jesus is not just what you want but he's also what you need what you need so I got a direct message last night on Instagram and it's one of many this particular person amongst hundreds like I'm like bragging about my DMS you know I got hundreds you know but he said pastor you need to preach repentance now brothers and sisters if I had twenty dollars for every person who's told me over the last ten years that I need to preach on repentance I'd be able to pay for all three of my kids to go to a very nice colleges to be honest we don't even understand what repentance is you don't repent it is it's when your view of the world changes because of who Jesus is you go oh I oh I've changed my mind you know what's happening this woman her mind's changing you know what's happening to her repentance we're so funny people want me to preach repentance brothers and sisters you can't preach repentance you preach Jesus and he causes repentance repentance is happening in our nation did you know that I had to admit to one of my lifelong friends who happens to be a black man an african-american man just yesterday I had no idea what Juneteenth was no I didn't I'm 41 I had to google it Juneteenth a holiday that should be celebrated in this nation and then some if you don't know what Juneteenth is urge you but you know what happened repentance my mind changed relationship this is how Jesus works are we not all experiencing repentance together right now just like this woman I am oh ah Jesus your your brothers sisters if Jesus believes everything you believe who's Jesus can I say that where's could the Jesus that changes how you think it I think please be seen and heard the Jesus who on a given day leads us to go I was wrong that's the sign that you've been to the wealth he's everything you need and I end with this there's another place where Jesus says I am it's in John 18 you can go there later John 18 verses one to eight I think is where the story happens the story goes like this talking about the I am Jesus is in the garden he's under extreme pressure he's hours away from flogging beatings crown carry the cross Golgotha middle cross between tooth and there he'll be crucified he knows the physical agony that is ahead of him and he goes to a garden with his closest friends the disciples and he begins to pray he knows that the hour is upon him and Judas one of the twelve has betrayed him Judas rallies a group of Roman soldiers and they come to the Garden of Gethsemane like a true Shepherd I love Jesus he stands up in front of the young men and he says to the Roman soldiers Judah who are you looking for who are you looking for I said we're looking for Jesus of Nazareth and here it comes again he says I am he I am he now something happens when he says that but it's different than what happened to the woman you know what happens to these soldiers who we know are carrying Spears and swords for some reason John's Gospel for instance wants us to know soldiers showed up with weapons Jesus says I am he remember I am reveals he is what she want everything you'll ever desire he is the desire of Nations he is the fulfilling of the longing of your soul he is what you crave he is the identity you want he is the love you want he's the worth you want he's he's everything you've ever longed for and desire but conversely he is also in addition he is what you need what does the church need I know we want to talk about what we want and there's a place for that church home I've done whole sermons on how Jesus can grant you what you want I would just like to suggest that right now my assignment from God is to share with you what Jesus thinks you need and what I need Jesus says I am he do you know what happened in that exact moment another phenomenon at the well all of the pain in the oppression of that woman was he clips at the revelation that he is the Messiah he is the superhero he is the fulfillment of all the laws and the prophets he is the prophets prophesy he is everything I've ever dreamed for she leaves her water jug which would have been a significant thing in possession and she runs into town to get her friends and they come out in a crowd you know what happened to the soldiers he said who are you looking for Jesus of Nazareth he said I am he and in one of the most extraordinary moments in all of Scripture the men carrying swords and spears fell back at the impact of God in the flesh revealing himself he said I am and they fell on their back so here's the question why didn't the woman fall down you know why because she doesn't need that she doesn't need that the soldiers needed you know it's amazing jesus never condemns the soldiers Jesus is not angry at the soldiers in fact one of the soldiers loses Azir one of the guys loses it in Jesus repairs it but what did the soldiers need they need to know that there is one who's greater than weapons there is one who's greater than constructs of Rome America or any other construct because that's what they needed those soldiers needed to get up off the ground and understand that their weapons are subject to the great power and person of the ages they needed to get up and go this is comical we're not taking him with weapons because the Bible says he yielded it was not a murder it was not a tragedy as we define it in our culture Jesus was not kicking and screaming hoping that they wouldn't take him trying to avoid it he said who are you looking for he said I am he they fell on their back they got up and it turns into a comedy they got up and said well we're gonna arrest you now and he says fine take me but let the rest go cuz that's the gospel let everybody else go free you take me that's my Jesus but the same Jesus who says I am that I am can impact people differently do you hear what I'm saying when he says I am for some hits oh here you're different of course you the Messiah no Jewish man's ever looked me in the eyes no man's ever talked to me theology no man's ever asked to share a drink with me you are the I am this woman doesn't need to fall down for she had been pushed down her whole life so the I egg and the I am came to lift her up but when Rome tries to flex and pretend that somehow it has the power to capture the Lord of heavens armies as I am puts them on their back my brothers and sisters we are in an era and a moment right now in church history where the I am who is the great it's not just what you want he is what you need and so if we have decided to trust in weapons if we have the strive decided to trust in the constructs of governments that were the made-up ideas of men the IAM decides to stand and say our trust is not in the spears and swords and weapons and methodologies and concepts and policies of a man our hope is in the Lord of the heavens house that's right he said Jesus said if I wanted to don't you think in a moment he says to Peter when he cut off one of these soldiers he says don't you think I could call more angels than you could count do you know who I can the I am help you with your mortgage yes can the I am help you sleep tonight yes can the I am cure cancer yes can the I am help you get a new job yes he can give you what you want he's everything you want but if we forgot he's also everything you need need and it occurs to me as I'm just a little excited I'm not yelling because I'm mad I'm yelling because I'm excited I hope you know that the I am can affect people differently based on what they need where do we come up with this idea of fairness that's right we we came up with this concept of fairness based on our United States culture try fairness and justice here it's not what you think it is it see right now do you know that Jesus could be picking up one people group while demonstrating his power and authority to humble another people group and it's the same I am same I am I am what you want my son my daughter I am I'm everything you'll ever want in this life I am what you've always desired in the longing deepest part of your soul but my son my daughter please hear the words of Jesus I'm also what you need will we walk away from the Messiah because at this moment in human history he seems to be wanting to show us what we need here's what we do know you're wrong and I'm wrong we all wrong we all got some wrongness and you know what the I am it's like alright son I'm gonna give you what you need there's what you need here's what you need I some trust in horses and some trust in chariots we will trust in the Lord our God so I am the I am you're looking for yes you are Jesus yes you are yes you are and um give us not just what you want I I think a prayer I want to pray for our nation and I just acknowledge all those watching from other nations so grateful thank God for every nation of the world allowed me the Liberty to speak from my nation in my context I want to pray over the United States of America oh Jesus don't just give us what we want give us what we need and so we're I do have authority is in this fear and so I'd like to declare a printer that we pray this week Oh God give me my wife and my children and my home please don't just give me what I want give me what I need do you know what that prayer is that's a prayer of repentance that's a prayer that welcomes how God changes the few of men and women I love Jesus isn't he wonderful and I'll admit I don't know where you need you know as the pastor that I don't know what everybody needs and it we're living in such a time where ho people groups need different things from the I am he knows he knows he knows we're so afraid why are we so afraid if the I am needs to bring us to a place of humility and brokenness what are we afraid of what are we afraid of get all the imagine the stories those soldiers told for years to come when we went to take him in to captivity when we came to arrest him he just said that he was the one and I don't know what happened but it's like I woke up on my back he was different he was different Jesus we love you and we thank you for what you're doing and what you're saying you are the I am you're so incredible just in this moment this prayerful posture if you're here today and watching and participating wherever you are in the world and you would like to receive the free gift of forgiveness that only Jesus offers story goes on Jesus willingly offers himself for Humanity he allows those soldiers once they get up and pick up their weapons to take him away and he became sin so that you can no longer be defined by your air you're wrong or your selfishness but you are now who you are by the free gift Jesus and how valuable you are you are so valuable Jesus gave everything he's wild about you his love is fierce for you if you'd like to receive his love and his forgiveness and have a relationship with him that
