welcome to southern my name is Aaron Myers I'm the production manager at southern manufacturing hub in Kinston North Carolina I lead our production team purpose of these a southern informational videos is to show you some of the installation techniques that I use there may be several different ways that you install southern products and if after seeing this video you have any comments or questions or you would like to share your favorite methods we would love to hear from you our contact information should be at the bottom of the screen and now here's today's ask southern topic today we're going to talk about stair rail we're going to go ahead and and mark and cut our bottom rail that's what we have here with our standard route is for a 35 degree application so what we want to do is we want to Center our rail between our two posts simply layer rail on the stairs we're going to measure from the post into the first cutout take a measurement we're about one and three-quarter inches right there we're going to go down to the bottom in and take a measurement and we got pretty lucky that's one in three-quarter inches right there our rail is centered between the post we're simply going to take our pencil using the post as a straight edge scribe a line on the rail both top and bottom and that's where we need to make our cuts there are a few issues we did get real lucky here centering our rail up our measurements worked out just the same naturally if if when you got to the bottom your measurement was different than the top measurement you would just adjust your rail until the cut out the distance between the cutout and the post both the bottom and top of the rail were the same other issues you may have depending on the distance your posts are set apart you could run into one of the picket holes being very close or overlapping the poke when you make a cup and this is typically okay because the bracket here will cover a certain tolerance of the of the exposed whole bracket over the rail here so I can show you what I'm talking about naturally out this hole if we had to cut this rail to Center or rail between our post and we had exposed hope left on the rail our bracket would be able to slide up and cover that now the top side of the rail you have this X the excess of bracket to cover the hole let's go down to the bottom I will show you that tolerance at the bottom is much less because the bracket is much much thinner good you can't have as much as I say a half inch to 3/4 inch of exposed hole past your cut and the bracket will hide one another consideration when we manufacture these stair rail kits we leave an extra two inches on each end of the rail that's the space between the pickets plus two inches to allow your room to make your angle cuts but be aware that on the top side you don't want to cut your rail very close to the end what happens is it could actually allow you to have your picket this is about 4 and 3/4 inches away from the post and in most municipalities that would be a code violation you want to check your local codes but you don't want more than 4 inches from that ticket to the post so just just keep that in mind you want to adjust your rail to be able to get your hyper your highest picket less than 4 inches from the post okay we've got a rail cut I've just got a temporarily resting in here we go ahead and put our brackets on the brackets provided in the kits or at a preset 35 degrees which is a standard kit however there is flexibility in the bracket your range of flexibility moves from the range of motion in our bracket is 28 degrees to 42 degrees even though it's a preset 35 degree bracket there is a range of motion of accommodate different slopes now before we can actually attach this bracket to the post attaching them to the post with our bracket you'll notice that because of our distance from our route to the post or bracket is is covering that hole what we're going to do is trim this bracket out of the way so that our picot can slip down in and give us a nice finished look we're going to go ahead and do that here we've got a bracket up trimmed out if we slide it over the end of the bracket here you can see that we've now exposed the entire route allowing our picot to slide down in there and now we can go ahead and attach our brackets to our post to place using our Phillips head bit in our and now the bottom bracket one thing you want to know the bottom rail does have some slight deflection to it in a stair rail kit there is no foot block because of this you want to make sure that you are no more than one inch from the nose of the tread to the bottom of the bottom rail bracket
