KRISTIE RAY: Previously
on "Raising Asia." SHAWN RAY: I'm going to be there
for some of your rehearsals. BILLY HUFSEY: I'm a hired gun. And you're replaceable. SHAWN RAY: Kristie's chosen
Billy, but I'm here to stay. And that's not you. BILLY HUFSEY: It was
a little too mature. ANTHONY BURRELL:
Well, I beg to differ. KRISTIE RAY: Anthony
had said Tina Davis was interested in having
a meeting with Asia. She's a manager. Tonight on "Raising Asia." Hey, so what is this thing? ASIA MONET RAY: There's
this artist, Dario. He's a new and coming
artist, and basically that's all I know. Who is Dario? Is that gum? This is a mess. Can we get gum-- they
got gum on stage. This stage is
uneven, it's dirty. That lip is still there. ANTHONY BURRELL: She
just tripped twice. SHAWN RAY: I saw it. Billy set this gig up. Somebody dropped the
ball on this performance. He's acting manager right now. He should have
handled this deal. SHAWN RAY: You can leave, and
I can handle it from here. [counting down tones] Asia. [music playing] [phone ringing] KRISTIE RAY: Hey. ADAM (ON PHONE): Hey,
Kristie, how's it going? Fine. What's going on? ADAM (ON PHONE): I really
don't think Billy's going to be able to make it today. He's feeling really
under the weather. Oh, no. KRISTIE RAY: Asia's
manager, Billy, normally works through being sick,
so it's really scary that he's this sick, and
we need him here for Asia. I can handle it. I just want to
make sure he's OK. Can you keep me posted,
and let me know? ADAM (ON PHONE): Of course. OK. Thank you. Bye. ADAM (ON PHONE): Bye. KRISTIE RAY: This week Billy
has booked Asia an opening performance for an up and coming
artist, Dario, for his album release party. Ask Anthony to give you
5 minutes to stretch, and you need to practice hard. There's no time to
be chatty catty. Right now we have a
rehearsal with Anthony, and he's prepared a really
amazing routine for Asia. This is the first time that Asia
will be an opening performer for another artist, and I
think that it's important that she has the experience. And that she's up there in
front of the music industry. I'm going to have to
put her jazz shoes on. ANTHONY BURRELL: OK. KRISTIE RAY: And then
we're going to think about your costume, Asia. ASIA MONET RAY: OK. Hey, so what is this thing? What is this thing we're doing? OK, so let's talk. So-- ASIA MONET RAY: There's
this artist, Dario. He's a new up and coming
artist, and basically that's all I know. ANTHONY BURRELL:
Billy gets us this gig where we're opening
up for Dario. Who is Dario. It's his album release party,
and Asia's invited to perform. ANTHONY BURRELL: Is it here? KRISTIE RAY: It's in LA, and
she'll do the red carpet first. ANTHONY BURRELL: OK. So Asia's at a really
critical point in her career. Every performance matters. I just Googled Dario,
and he's really over the top, and
like flamboyant, and festive, and fun. Even though I've never heard
of Dario ever in my life, opening up for artists,
it's very important. Especially for a new act. I put the music on for a
refresher, A. 5, 6, 7, 8. You have to show yourself and
prove yourself to the industry that hey, I'm here,
and I can do this. I'll call it out. [vocalizing] To clean, arms. 1, 2, 3, 4, jump. Bop, bop, 1, 2, 3. Back. Good timing. Bop, bop, bop. [music playing] Make it time. Bop, good. Good musicality. Good musicality. Back it on up when you can. Stop. Billy's sick, so now we're out
of a vocal coach, acting coach, and a manager. All the slack is falling on me. Regardless if
Billy comes or not, I'm still going to do
my job and choreograph, and make it amazing. Well, Asia, this guy's
going to bring it, so you better step
up to the plate. No one can outperform me. ANTHONY BURRELL: OK. [music playing] SHAWN RAY: I did not
make bacon today. Relax. What are you eating, Asia? ASIA MONET RAY: Stuff. I'm grabbing myself an orange. What are you eating, As? ASIA MONET RAY: I'm eating
eggs, peanut butter, and banana with fruit. What's the problem? It's breakfast. I know, but she's eating
her bread before eggs. You should just give
her her eggs-- and why is she having yellow eggs? Because she needs to
have some fat in her diet. She's exercising and
dancing all day long. Well, there's fat
in peanut butter. So you gave her bread,
peanut butter, and banana. Kristie micromanages
Asia's diet because she's a control freak. Asia, you normally
eat egg whites. You don't eat yellow eggs. ASIA MONET RAY: Yeah? So why don't you tell Daddy? I just noticed that. SHAWN RAY: I don't know
what's the big deal. It's eggs. KRISTIE RAY: Shawn, like
my mom and my sister, will tend to give Asia
whatever she wants. She's a dancer. She's not a bodybuilder. And with your
genetics, she starts eating a bunch of peanut butter,
and bread, and eggs at one sitting, she gets bulky,
and you know that. Kristie, before she
got into this whole dance thing and the
pressures involved, she was a lot less stressful. Can I talk to
you for a second? When I come back, eat that. That's a lot of ketchup. Eat your eggs. ASIA MONET RAY: Sorry. SHAWN RAY: The old
Kristie didn't really have a care in the
world, and so that's where we want to get back to. KRISTIE RAY: I don't want
to talk in front of Asia about the food, but that's
just one little thing. I know it's not a
big thing for you, but it's a big thing for me. I don't want her sitting there
freaking out about her body image two years from
now in high school or whatever wondering what
she should or shouldn't eat. I'm giving her healthy food. It's what I grew up on. Things can get kind of
contentious between Kristie and I because Kristie's very
controlling over our house, her look, her kids. I take the good with the bad
when it comes to Kristie. But that's the difference
of you being on the same page as me because I'm the mean mom
because she can't have what she wants to eat. We're talking
a piece of toast. I'm not so sure Kristie's
upset with me as a chef. There's no question being more
involved with my daughter's career probably has Kristie
a little upset with me, especially when
it comes to Billy. Because Kristie has seen what
Billy does, and she's sold. I still have to wait until he
proves himself to me that he's the right guy for my daughter. This has been a conversation
for like, two years. I feel like I'm being attacked. [music playing] KRISTIE RAY: Let's
stretch first. Come on, stretch right here. No, thanks. [music playing] KRISTIE RAY: OK. Oh, ow. I'm really sore. KRISTIE RAY: Anthony's
late, and we only have 24 hours until Asia
performs for Dario's album release party. We don't have time to sit
around and twiddle our thumbs. I'm going to run this
routine with or without him. Whoo! KRISTIE RAY: OK, you
know why you did that? ASIA MONET RAY: Why? Because you didn't pull up. Fill your rib cage. You're not even
getting high relever. You've been lazy. Keep going. Was that good? Yeah, just keep going. You don't have to look
at me for approval. Oh, oh, I hate these shoes! You have to wear
clean ones for the show. You better break them in. Asia's getting ready to do this
performance for Dario's album release party,
and I'm concerned. Asia will be an opening
performer for another artist. She's up there in front
of the music industry. This is just another
stepping stone for this big show at Universal. Dance with the one. Why do one? Because you sitting
here stretching it-- Oh, I'm sorry. KRISTIE RAY: No, you're not. I didn't mean to-- KRISTIE RAY: But we'll
talk about it in the car. ASIA MONET RAY: I
didn't mean to do that. KRISTIE RAY: Don't look at me. You keep looking at
me after every move. You know your routine. Do it right, and
correct your mistakes. Stop running your
mouth, and do it. ASIA MONET RAY: She needs to
get her behavior on check. [music playing] Hey! ANTHONY BURRELL: Welcome, guys. Look what I got. Listen, sorry about that. I had a really
important meeting today. How did it go today? ASIA MONET RAY: Good. ANTHONY BURRELL:
Did you rock it out? ASIA MONET RAY: I'm really
glad Anthony's here, so all the stress that
my mom's putting on me can go somewhere else,
and we can get down to some real rehearsal. Give it more, Asia. Don't be so dry. Give me the life. Give me life. There's no feel in it. Ha! Sizzle, sizzle, crack. [vocalizing] And back. [vocalizing] Give me those eyes,
and then we'll-- give me fever. [vocalizing] Boom, take your time. [music playing] Stop that. Got to go more, Asia. All right? Go outside, and get
a drink of water, so we can finish
talking creative. Sorry I'm late again. I just don't like being late
because that's just not who I am as an artist. I pride myself in-- Oh, now you're an artist? La, la, la, la, la, la. KRISTIE RAY: I don't have time
to deal with Anthony's excuses why he wasn't here. We got to go. My number one priority
is making sure Asia is ready for this performance. ANTHONY BURRELL: Do you know
where the venue is for Dario? You can't call them on the
phone and try to figure-- just call them. We need to know because we
can't go through that drama. I'm surprised you're
not freaking out. I mean-- Billy may still come out. ANTHONY BURRELL: Billy set up
this gig, and as acting manager he's not even here to
represent for himself. The only thing that will
hold Asia back right now is mismanagement. The talent's there, the
creative team is there. I'm not sure if Billy
is the right guy. Billy's sick. I would be [bleep] bricks. [music playing] SHAWN RAY: First of
all, having time alone. So finally we get a chance to
have a date, and talk about us. Put the kids aside, and
talk about her and I. I feel that we've grown distant. There's various things
that we can do mutually to get closer together. There's no question,
when dealing with Kristie a lot of times what I say
is not going to get heard. So I found the delicate way
of communicating with her through her sister. Gina's concerns about our
relationship are real. Kristie, you-- you're
digging your ditch. Bella and Shawn don't
even want to be there. Because she's been divorced
and separated, you know? And she's been there. She sees the writing on the wall
when two people start growing apart. And being married a long
time doesn't mean you've had a happy, good marriage. Yeah, but I think the reason
why my mom and my sister feel that way is because you
talked to them before talking to me. We have some
communication issues, and sometimes getting
through to you is easier to get
through to them. KRISTIE RAY: Shawn and I have
always had a really different marriage. I'm not that needy wife
that needs him to be there all the time. I'm trying to make it possible
for Asia to become a star, and there's no other way besides
how we're doing it right now. SHAWN RAY: We just have to work
a little bit towards trying to find our time. We need our time. [music playing] Today, it's the day that
Asia opens up for Dario. Right now, I'm feeling
ah, a little uneasy. I still need to see the stage. [music playing] So I arrive at this Dario
performance at the bar. I thought it was
going be a theater. We're in Hollywood. It's small. It's alcohol. There's kind of bums outside. I'm not quite sure I want
my eight-year-old performing coming here. But I cannot afford
to cancel appearances because the manager's
making bad decisions. But we're going to
go ahead and honor our contractual obligations. [music playing] [vocalizing] ANTHONY BURRELL: [vocalizing] Is that gum? This is a mess. Can we get gum-- they
got gum on stage. Kristie. KRISTIE RAY: Yes? ANTHONY BURRELL: It's
messy, it's dirty. It's disgusting. The stage is not for a dancer. It is filthy. There is gum on the stage. SHAWN RAY: Asia, be mindful
after you do your routine and you walk away that
that lip is still there. You could come up here
and do your thing, and turn around and
forget all about that. ANTHONY BURRELL: She
just tripped twice. SHAWN RAY: I saw it. That's why I'm telling you. This stage is
uneven, it's dirty. But it doesn't really
matter where she's at, she's a performer. If she sees the
camera or one fan, she's going to perform just as
if there were 1,000 fans there. Let's get out of here. Let's go get changed,
come back, and kill them. [music playing] Watch out. KRISTIE RAY: Right now, we have
to get Asia ready with hair and makeup. We need to get this worked out,
and get her to the red carpet. Take your shoes off. I'm going to get your dress, OK? Come on, let's go. SHAWN RAY: Asia. All right, now you can
breathe for a second. Anthony didn't like the
stage, how about you? I wish we carry a mop around. So I'm going to-- yeah,
I'm just letting you know, I'm going to be-- just trying to give her
daddy pep talk real quick. Can I get one minute? Yeah, you can
have two minutes. SHAWN RAY: Give me two minutes. KRISTIE RAY: All right. Let me have the room, please. Trying to talk to
her privately, mama. Can I get some private-- I know, I just want to
talk to my daughter. Thank you. Mom's not used to me being here,
so she's a little bit weirded out because you know how she
likes to control things, right? Yeah. Do you like when
I come out here? Yeah. What do you think Mom thinks? I don't know. Well, we're going to work
on a little bit more, OK? My mom's on the scale of-- KRISTIE RAY: We're running
into her time, honey. SHAWN RAY: I know. Well, I'm just telling her that
I'm going to be trying to spend a little bit more
time with her, but it looks like you're squeezing
in on that little bit of time I got. So I'm going to put
my suit and tie on. KRISTIE RAY: I think the
timing is wrong for Shawn to run down his
involvement with Asia. We don't have time right
before she gets on stage. SHAWN RAY: All right, guys,
let's pack it up and move it out. Mom, we'll be downstairs. Got everything?
ASIA MONET RAY: Yeah. SHAWN RAY: OK. [music playing] Very different audience
here at this red carpet. Looks very strange to me. Hey, how's it going? This is Crystal
from Teen Infonet. I'm here with Asia Monet Ray. How are you? SHAWN RAY: This is not my idea
for where the next Beyonce should be appearing at,
but Billy committed Asia to this venue, and
this performance. So I'm going to stick this out. WOMAN 1: Hi, Asia. ASIA MONET RAY: Hi, hi. MAN 1: I'm so excited that
we're going to do this. [music playing] KRISTIE RAY: So the
red carpet's over. Now, it's the time crunch. We need to get her
into her dressing room in the parking lot, which
that will not happen again. ANTHONY BURRELL: Hello? KRISTIE RAY: Hello. ANTHONY BURRELL: Kristie? You look dope! You're OK too. Why are you out here
in the parking lot? You remember? 21 and over. ANTHONY BURRELL: Oh. KRISTIE RAY: Yeah. ANTHONY BURRELL: You got to get
her some gigs outside the club. It's totally unfair that
Kristie rides me like a bull. Anything that I mess up,
Kristie's on my back. But when it comes
to Billy, everything is just smooth sailing. We have like 24 hours
until she performs, and she doesn't even-- she's not
even practicing in her costume. ANTHONY BURRELL: It amazes me
that Kristie is so calm today. You know, we're in
like the city's dump. And this is absolutely
Billy's fault here. Straighten that leg,
and point your feet. ASIA MONET RAY: Slicer. KRISTIE RAY: Muah, love you. OK, good luck, you guys. This is the first time Asia's
going to be an opening act, and right now it's not the
place to talk about Billy. Anthony's most important thing
is to be here focused on Asia. Asia has to be on her
A game on that stage. You've got to give
it your all, and-- ASIA MONET RAY: I'm OK. Listen, at the end sizzle. ASIA MONET RAY: Sizz-- With your eyes. For the beginning,
in order to grow, you got to have this
out of body experience. Because I want you-- You're gonna make
me stressed out, and I'm going to be messed up. ANTHONY BURRELL: You're fine. Do splits. Splits. You're like my mother. [music playing] ANTHONY BURRELL: Keep
that working leg strong. Keep up, pull up. Uh. So we're minutes away
from opening up for Dario. Me and Asia have been to
some pretty intense, tight situations as far
as performances. But this is by far the worst
situation we have ever been in. Inhale. Exhale. [exhales forcefully] EMCEE: You guys are going
to be impressed by this one. It's Asia Monet Ray, a.k.a. little Beyonce. Put your hands together, folks. [audience cheers and applause] [music playing] [audience cheers and applause] [music playing] [whistles] Yeah! [music playing] Yeah, yeah. [applause] [music playing] [audience cheers and applause] She rocked it. SHAWN RAY: Her progress
is astronomical. I mean, she looks like a
seasoned professional dancer, and I'm not just saying
that because she's my kid. This is a force to be
reckoned with right here. I think we should speak to
management about other gigs. We have to really
consider what's going on here with Billy. You know, he's here
booking these gigs, and he's not here to
follow through with them. Something's not right here. I'm not here to game
Asia's 20% as a manager. I'm here to help this
little girl reach her maximum capacity. We can't be in no
parking lot like this. We can't be in a
situation where we're not treated like the little Beyonce
that she was introduced as. Right. SHAWN RAY: He made
a very good point. We went from 10,000
to 30 people, so we have to be selective
where we put her out there. ANTHONY BURRELL: It's OK
to say no to some people. It's OK to say no. Right. SHAWN RAY: Billy
set this gig up. I would have thought much
more would have been there. We're in Hollywood. Somebody dropped the
ball on this performance. If he's acting
manager right now, he should have
handled this deal. KRISTIE RAY: OK, so let's
get this straight right now because it keeps, like
beating a dead horse. Don't get defensive, please. KRISTIE RAY: I'm not. SHAWN RAY: OK,
then let him speak. No, listen.
SHAWN RAY: We know-- No, you guys need to
have a meeting with him. He's trying to
talk in front of you, so I'm going to have
to interject myself here and override some of the
decisions you have emotionally with people that you
have relationships with. Because you're emotional. Otherwise, you can leave,
and me and Anthony can talk, and I can handle it from here. I think the strain
on our relationship is because Shawn wants
to be more involved, but this is what
I've been doing. So I'm going to let Shawn
have more responsibility because I do not want to
end up a broken family. OK, Shawn, this is what
we're going to do right now. You talk to Billy, and
whatever you guys decide to do, I'm good with that. SHAWN RAY: Next week,
we're moving to Las Vegas. We're going to hit
the Planet Hollywood. This will be the first time that
Asia actually sings and dances. And Billy's in control of it,
so this had better be huge or we're going to
have some issues. So we're going to give
him an opportunity in Vegas. If that doesn't pan out,
we're going to go to plan B or I'm going to stop
writing the checks. ASIA MONET RAY: I'm giving
a performance in Las Vegas. We got to get on the road. This performance at Planet
Hollywood is huge for Asia. BELLA BLU RAY: Bye! SHAWN RAY: This is a
very important weekend. I need to make sure we're
not having the coach and choreographer
fighting in the back, you know what I'm saying? Oh! ASIA MONET RAY: (SINGING)
My name is Asia Monet. I'm representing today,
and I have a few things that I wanted to say. What am I here for? You're adding routines that's
never been practiced yet. Don't be combative with me.
