[Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] uh [Music] so [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] grace mercy and peace from god our father and the lord jesus christ be with you and a very well welcome to true cathedral as we gather to celebrate this holy eucharist on this ash wednesday the marking of the beginning of the season of lent in which we prepare ourselves once more to celebrate the great and glorious resurrection of our lord jesus christ at easter lent is a time of preparation it is also a time of reflection both on our own falling short in the eyes of the gospel but also collectively as human societies attempt to create the kingdom on earth and are often found wanting and of course we meet at a time of grave conflict in eastern europe so we pray for the people of the ukraine at this time asking that swords will be turned into plowshares and that god's peace will reign supreme and within the life of our own diocesan family we need at this occasion to mark with gratitude and thanksgiving the life of julian pikett julian would be known to many of you he was the director of education for many years in this diocese and was one of the well dare i say the greatest rack on tours most of us have ever come across you never left an occasion with julian without being at least thoroughly entertained he'd been ill for some considerable time and he was he died early this morning and so we give thanks for his life we pray for judy and all members of the family and we ask that god may receive his soul into his glorious and everlasting kingdom so before we proceed to just keep a few moments of silence as we remember the life work and witness of julian pikett rest eternal grant unto him o lord and let light perpetual shine upon him may he rest in peace brothers and sisters in christ since early days christians have observed with great devotion the time of our lord's passion and resurrection it became the custom of the church to prepare for this by a season of penitence and fasting at first this season of lent was observed by those who are preparing for baptism at easter and by those who are to be restored to the church's fellowship from which they had been separated through sin in course of time the church came to recognize that by a careful keeping of these days all christians might take to heart the call to repentance and the assurance of forgiveness proclaimed in the gospel and so grow in faith and in devotion to our lord i invite you therefore in the name of the church to the observance of a holy lent by self-examination and repentance by prayer fasting and self-denial and by reading and meditating on god's holy word so [Music] yes [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] let us pray almighty and everlasting god you hate nothing that you have made and forgive the sins of all those who are penitent create and make in us new and contrite hearts that we worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness may receive from you the god of all mercy perfect remission and forgiveness through jesus christ your son our lord who is alive and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god now and forever a reading from the book of the prophet joel blow the trumpet in zion sound the alarm on my holy mountain let all the inhabitants of the land tremble for the day of the lord is coming it is near a day of darkness and gloom a day of clouds and thick darkness like blackness spread upon the mountains a great and powerful army comes their like has never been from of old nor will be again after them in the ages to come yet even now says the lord return to me with all your heart with fasting with weeping and with mourning rend your hearts and not your clothing return to the lord your god for he is gracious and merciful slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and relents from punishing who knows whether he will not turn and relent and leave a blessing behind him a grain offering and a drink offering for the lord your god blow the trumpet in zion sanctify a fast call a solemn assembly gather the people sanctify the congregation assemble the aged gather the children even infants at the breast let the bridegroom leave his room and the bride her canopy between the vestibule and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord weep let them say spare your people o lord and do not make your heritage a mockery a byword among the nation why should it be said among the peoples where is their god this is the word of the lord oh [Music] behalf of christ he reconciled to god for our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin so that in him we might become the righteousness of god as we worked together with him we urge you also not to ask that for the lord says at an acceptable time i have listened to you and on a day of salvation i have helped you see now is the acceptable time see now is the day of salvation this is the word of the lord [Music] [Music] according to matthew jesus said to the disciples beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them for then you have no reward from your father in heaven so whenever you give arms do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets so that they may be praised by others truly i tell you they have received their reward but when you give arms do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing so that your arms may be done in secret and your father who sees in secret will reward you and whenever you pray do not be like the hypocrites for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners so that they may be seen by others truly i tell you they have received their reward but whenever you pray go into your room and shut the door and pray to your father who is in secret and your father who sees in secret will reward you and whenever you fast do not look dismal like the hypocrites before they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting truly i tell you they have received their reward but when you fast put oil on your head and wash your face so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your father who is in secret and your father who sees his secret will reward you do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven where neither moth nor us consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal for where your treasure is there your heart will be also this is the gospel of the lord in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen oh i have slipped the surly bonds of earth put out my hand and touched the face of god but the earth is where it all begins not for nothing did god scoop up a handful of earth and say that contained therein is all that there is all that there needs to be the material of the universe and the hummus which gives it life insinuating itself into the inert granules of dust and saying to it you will be more than this this is where we begin formed from the dust of the earth breathed upon by god we arise humus becoming human woman and man standing upright our feet planted on the god given good earth and yet our gaze set towards the horizons of our hopes our expectations and our overweening ambitions for we craft the good earth as we see fit we mold it into shapes that proclaim who we are and the aspirations we have the blessings we wish to share cities and schools hospitals and cathedrals plowshares and wedding rings but we also construct less than admirable expressions of our humanity our defensive and destructive tendencies fortresses and prisons torture chambers and concentration camps swords and manacles we aspire and conspire we elevate and degrade that is why we are here now to account for the earth that we have scooped up and cast before the winds where and how does it fall are we tempted as we seem so often to do to detach our humanity from the humus that formed us and pretend we are gods ourselves can we so readily slip the surly bonds of earth no we're not only inextricably linked to the humus that gives us our name we are the humus that gives us our name dust ye are and dust ye shall be this is not a cry of despair but a recognition of the responsibility we have for the earth that we shape what we create are not just monuments to nobility or folly but reflections of who we are and who we are to become therefore the ruination of the earth is really the ruination of ourselves and the nurturing of the earth is really the nurturing of ourselves thus shall it ever be and to realize this is to realize our humanity that we are here to serve each other our humility so that we never think that only we have the answers but need each other to continue our search and our humor so that we can see joy infiltrating all we undertake all of which is rooted firmly in the great good earth which gives us shape and all of which expresses the god-centeredness of our shared exploring we need to nurture the earth the dust the humus because we need to nurture ourselves and so we kneel before the throne of god and receive the dust the ash which is not only a sign of creation's fall but which is also a sign of its inexorable and glorious potential aided by the holy spirit to rise again we reach out our hand and we touch the face of god not by slipping the surly bonds of earth but by placing that hallowed earth in the palm of our hand and seeing our humanity grow from its fertile goodness uh [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] all the times [Music]
