Arturia MiniFuse vs Focusrite Scarlett vs MOTU M2 + Neumann U87

these are new 100 and 150 audio interfaces by arturia and this is a 3 000 microphone the neumann u87 i got this mic from zounds.com so i thought why not give it a try with the new arturia mini fuse audio interfaces why well why not in this video i'll let you hear my voice recorded through the mini fuse 2 the scarlet 2i2 and the motu m2 which are around the same price and i'll give you some info about each so you can decide which one is best for you this is not a sponsored video but if you use any of the links in the video description it does help out this channel all right i love to get to the best part of the video first so let's hear some audio comparisons recorded with each of the interfaces and the neumann u87 microphone but stick around after because i'll go through some unique favorite pretty similar huh in my opinion the mini fuse and the motu m2 have the edge they both sound great full and thick [Music] whenever i'm alone with you you make me feel like i am young again the arturia miniviews interfaces first and a super unique feature they have the mini fuse comes in three versions the mini fuse one has one input and costs a hundred dollars the mini fuse 2 has two inputs and costs 150 dollars you can use the inputs to connect a mic guitar or other instruments there's also a mini fuse 4 coming out soon they also come in two colors black and white there are a couple more differences i'll go over them in this video arturia is really marketing the high quality of sound with these interfaces in particular the high dynamic range the low input noise and the low distortion that pretty much means you're getting better sound in and that should translate to cleaner clear recordings they also have a five year warranty which is one of the longest warranties you can get so they're really betting on the durability the mini fuse has a loopback feature which is great for streaming it lets you stream your voice and other audio from your computer at the same time as your microphone okay so what about that unique feature i mentioned well it's this usb port in the back it's very hard to find these on other audio interfaces it's actually useful for connecting a keyboard without taking up another usb port on your computer the mini fuse is pretty much acting like a usb hub it's a pretty useful feature the mini fuse 2 also adds midi ins and outs and a direct monitor mix knob okay so that sounds great but anything missing well one thing i'd complain about is the input meters mini fuse shows your input level with a blinking light on the gain knobs if it lights up red it means your input is too high and you're clipping not as easy to read as some other interfaces with meters the mo 2 m2 has a nice color screen to handle this and even the native instruments complete audio 1 and 2 have nicer meters but arturia did include nice meters for output by the way if you're new around here i'm sanjay c i have lots of videos about music production and gear reviews on my channel consider subscribing if you haven't already and hit that like button too alright let's get to some interesting details about the scarlet next okay so what sets the scarlet 2i2 apart well the focusrite scarlett 2i2 is a very popular interface and the new generation 3 has a cool air feature that adds some flavor to your recordings but aside from that it lacks some features of the mini-fuse 2. the mini-fuse 2 actually includes midi ins and outs which could be useful if you need to connect a synth the mini-fuse also includes a direct monitor mix knob which lets you adjust how much of the input signal versus the music from your daw you hear in your headphones when you're recording it's pretty useful to have this as a physical knob and the scarlet doesn't have one the scarlet 2i2 also doesn't include output meters like the mini fuse that's usually not a huge issue for me but it's worth noting and of course there's that unique feature i mentioned earlier the usb port in the back of the mini fuse all right how about the m2 the moto m2 is more expensive than the other two it's 180 and i have to mention that this is notoriously difficult to get a hold of and one of the reasons is the pretty impressive spec sheet i've actually compared the moto m2 and the scarlett before and you can watch that full comparison here when comparing the motu to the mini fuse 2 well they're pretty close on paper the m2 has higher dynamic range but the mini fuse isn't far off the moto m2 has super low latency though best in class and very hard to beat but the m2 doesn't have that physical monitor and mix knob that's on the mini fuse 2 and of course that usb hub feature hey the usb hub thing might not be a big deal to you but i kind of like this feature now the m2 sports this very cool screen and i have to say it's useful and looks great too one big disappointment is the motu m2's included software package it's just not up to par compared to others at this price artoria pretty much blows it out of the water more on that later okay i want to cover a few more things that i get a lot of questions on first can all of these interfaces handle high impedance headphones like the biodynamic dt 770 pro 250 ohm headphones well the m2 had the strongest output in my headphones followed by the arturia mini fuse the scarlet volume was fine but if you like things loud you may be happier with one of the other two interfaces also i want to mention build quality here all three of these interfaces have a metal body and they feel really well made it's kind of hard to pick one from the other but i think the motu and arturia interfaces just feel a bit more solid all around the front and back of the scarlet interface feels kind of plasticky but the rail test is durability right arturia has the better warranty five years compared to three for the focusrite and just two for the motu that says something right let's talk after five years so what about software the arturia mini fuse interfaces come with some really nice software including analog lab intro which includes 500 presets from vintage synths and keyboards that artoria is really well known for you also get some excellent effects plugins from arturia i used a few arturia effects plugins on my vocals in this song and they are top tier the mini fuse also comes with ableton live light guitar rig 6le and some trial subscriptions to splice and auto-tune unlimited this is a much better software package compared to the motu m2 which basically gives you ableton live light mode 2 performer light and some samples focusrite includes decent software and effects much more comparable to the arturia mini fuse you can get the mini fuse interfaces and the others i compared it to using the links below
